Renee Zellweger might not be a disaster

Every Christmas, I have my small traditions. Stuff like making cookies from scratch and putting a red bow on the dog. Another one is a repeated viewing of Bridget Jones’ Diary – people talk a lot of trash about the book and the movie, but I love it. It’s seriously one of Renee’s best performances. She used to be one of my favorites.

But over the past few years, Renee has had too many “wtf?” moments, the most recent being her crazy-ugly dress, bad hair, bad make-up and slurred speech at the Golden Globes last night. Is it drugs? Is it alcoholism? Is it some combination of insanity and Botox?

Anyway, Renee is starting a round of publicity for on of her new films, and she’s talking marriage, career, and living arrangements. OK! magazine has details.

Although she admits that her past was a surprise to her, Renée Zellweger reveals in a new interview that she’s ready for the future.

“I never say never about anything, because I look back on my own personal history and it shocks me,” she tells Marie Claire in the February issue. “If I would ever have said, ‘Oh for sure this is going to be in my future,’ most of my experiences would not have been on my list. So I don’t even bother thinking about it, because I’ve learned that there’s no anticipating that stuff.”

As for that “single” status looming over her head, Renée seems to be just fine on her own these days.

“I’m not single, I’m busy. That’s my line,” she jokes, adding that her hectic schedule is enough for her right now. “The thing is, I’m away all the time (she has farmhouse on Long Island undergoing perpetual renovation and an apartment in New York). I suppose if I sat still long enough to get to know somebody beyond a dinner date, maybe. But I don’t feel like my life is empty or that I have to make something happen.”

But even the Appaloosa star admits that fitting everything in could be a big task to tackle.

“I have projects to develop. I want to study American history and political science, live in an apartment in France, and fix my bad French. And is there really time for all of it? Last summer, when I said it wasn’t the right time for something I wanted to do, a friend asked, ‘How long are you going to live?’ ”

[From OK! Magazine]

She seems kind of normal in the interview. What the reporter probably didn’t mention is that she was smoking cigarettes with her feet while a cat slept on her head. Or something. I want the old Renee back! *Sob.*

I think that mess of a dress she’s wearing is proof she’s still kooky as all get out. She always looks so pissed off too…

  2. PJ says:

In a photo like this you can see right through the sheer black fabric, but on TV it looked opaque and pretty. Renee isn’t the first actress who learned this the hard way that the camera sees right through that black fabric!

I’m surprised by how different many of the actress’s gowns looked on TV than they did in still photos. Jennifer Lopez is another example–her gold dress was shimmery and moved beautifully with her body on TV, but in a still photo it didn’t look nearly as good.

    Amen, sister.

    a weirdo in a pretty dress is still . . . a weirdo.

  5. geronimo says:

I don’t get the anti-Renee stuff. She’s a really talented, versatile, multi-layered Oscar-winning actress, is by all accounts a really nice, decent person, lives her life out of the spotlight and does her own thing. What’s not to like?

  6. elainebenes says:

I don’t know, Geronimo. Could it be her usual “sourpuss” look she has going on? But when I see her in a movie, or an interview, she’s actually likeable. IMO.

I really liked her in White Oleander & a Jim Carrey movie…Me, Myself & Irene???? I think that’s the title.

I prefer train wreck to disaster. Reminds me of an aging sorority alum.

  8. carbunga says:

She is unusally aware of how absurb thesw award shows are and obviously wears whatever she wants to. Go rene! This may not look very chic or but she certainly stands out. and what is actress without standing out from the crowd
    ?

  9. daisy424 says:

Good points Geronimo, I have to agree.

But I don’t understand how squinting and grimacing like one took a bite into a lemon is a flattering look for anyone.

  10. geronimo says:

elainebenes & daisy – I’ve read a number of interviews with her and she really seems to be uncomfortable in the spotlight and limits her public appearances as much as she can, movie promos permitting. That might have something to do with the squinty, grimacing thing – she does come across as quite awkward and uncomfortable looking sometimes, can’t argue with that!

  11. Mrs. Darcy says:

She’s kind of a space cadet but a fabulous comic actress and it doesn’t get any better than Bridget Jones!

  12. Aspen says:

I saw her on Oprah one time, and she was clearly fighting off a panic attack. I saw her using what I have always called “therapy breathing,” and it was SO painfully obvious that the woman was terrified and fighting to stay in control.

I have never viewed her as anything but very shy. She hates the paparazzi. She described driving to the police station in tears while praying they’d go away so she could get home without them driving her off the road or finding out where she lived. It was awful.

I mean…all celebrities have to put up with this stuff, but Rene was the first one I saw who reacted with fear and real anxiety rather than anger or snobby disdain.

She seems to be afraid of her own shadow when forced into public view. Given my assumption that I’m right about that, I have come to forgive her for looking so pent up when she comes out to do her job promoting things and being seen.

  13. tooey says:

I think she has that “sourpuss-lemon-face” because she is constantly sucking in her cheecks to de-emphasize it’s roundness. I think that’s why she’s so damn skinny, too, she’s self-conscious about having a very round, “moon” face and is constantly trying to de-emphasize it. I think she’s very pretty, but not last night at the Globes. The hair made her look really old and didn’t pair well with that school-marm neckline.

  14. Granger says:

I personally think she’s a brilliant actress (Chicago, anyone?) and actually admire her ability to stay out of the limelight. That whole Kenny Chesney thing must have freaked her right out — not just the actual divorce, but the media frenzy surrounding it.

I’ve never thought she’s pretty, though. She’s far too thin, and obviously works very, very, very hard to stay that way. A bit obsessive, I think.

  15. Megan says:

I like the dress, it’s flattering, stylish and daring. Much better than all the normal boring dresses of the night.

  16. AC says:

I find her annoying, plain and simple.

I find anyone annoying who whines about being in the spotlight (hello, it comes with the “job” of being a celebrity) yet when it’s time to make the press rounds to promote your new movie that you want us to watch to make you richer, your argument about the perils of being in the public eye conveniently goes out the window (that goes for George Clooney, Michelle Williams and all of those other annoying celebs who do this annoying stuff).

    It just reeks of self-righteousness.

  17. meow mix says:

I think the dress would have been better without the sleeve things attached.

  18. lola lola says:

While I do agree that that dress is a mess. Her hairdo makes her look like a school marm. I think it’s great she takes chances. My favorite Rene look was that cranberry colored dress with her jet black hair–I think it was a Carolina Hererra but she looked amazing. This dress, not so much.

  19. Clarise says:

I guess I’m alone on this one,

but I overall like the dress and the whole look. I think she looks pretty hot. Maybe instead of the white cami she should have worn a grey or black top underneath?

  20. neelyo says:

I don’t think she’s squinting, it’s just how she looks. Never understood the hate when there are so many other celebrities deserving of real scorn. But the preview for her new film looks terrible.

  21. 88modesty88 says:

Some people act because it’s their calling. Others act because they “kinda fell into it”. And then there are those whose performances cannot even be called “acting”. (all the celebutards.)

Being an actor does not mean you’re an attention seeker — Marlon Brando never courted attention. So I have to disagree with those who think Renee should suck it up “just because she’s a celebrity”.

Being a celebrity is not the same as being an actor. I don’t like people. My throat closes up when I have to walk into a room filled with my peers. I die a little every time I have to walk into a room filled with strangers.

I’m guessing Renee may suffer from this anxiety too. She has my sympathy.

  22. stephen wolleben says:

i like it…it’s different and fun. nerts to that

  23. Goddess711 says:

I think Renee looks elegant but lost. She seems to be floundering when she’s in public, it’s in her eyes but she’s still stunning!

  24. samuel says:

To my mind, Renee undoubtedly suffers from anxiety. I’ve seen her interviewed on TV and you could see she could not relax at all and was desparate for the ordeal to end.

In many of the photographs of her, you can see the anxiety in her eyes. Her smile is forced, she just wants to get away.

She’s possibly shy, but I think she probably suffers from some social anxiety disorder.
