Charlie Hunnam feels ‘really intrigued & excited’ about playing Christian Grey

Here are some photos from the Hollywood premiere of the sixth season of Sons of Anarchy. There were a lot of good photos from the premiere, but I’m just using the Charlie Hunnam pics, plus one bonus one of Jimmy Smits, just because I have so much love for Jimmy and I would still HIT IT. Like a house on fire. Even though Charlie still has his (SoA-mandatory) flesh-beard, I have to admit… he looks really good here, right? I think being cast as Christian Grey agrees with him. He looks comfortable, sexy, even a little sassy.

You know how all of the fan-girls were clutching their pearls about Charlie’s casting as Christian Grey? Well, now some of the fan-girls have started a petition to make producers re-cast the roles with Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel. Alexis Bledel I can understand – she’s beautiful and she has that vulnerability AND sexiness that would have been great for Anastasia Steele. I don’t have high hopes for Dakota Johnson, but I also think Dakota was probably one of the few actresses who really wanted the part. But I don’t get the Matt Bomer thing at all – why are people so worried about Charlie Hunnam? Anyway, Charlie’s not worried:

Charlie Hunnam is ready to go from biker badboy to billionaire sex symbol.

During the season 6 premiere of his FX hit, Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam opened up about his Fifty Shades of Grey co-star Dakota Johnson and how he landed the role of Christian Grey.

“As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us,” Hunnam told The Hollywood Reporter and handful of reporters. “It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it.”

Before that electrifying reading, Hunnam spoke at length with director Sam Taylor-Johnson about her thoughts on the role. After their first meeting, he “felt really intrigued and excited about it.”

“I went and read the first book to get a clearer idea of who this character was, and felt even more excited about the prospect of bringing him to life.”

But at first he was cautious about taking on the commitment, given that he’s been locked into a TV show since 2008. After more talks with Taylor-Johnson, the filmmakers pushing back the shooting schedule to give Hunnam more time to prepare, and the reading with his future co-star, the actor committed.

Does he have worries about portraying such racy material onscreen?

“My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. It was incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man,” Hunnam said. “I mean I’m 16 and 17 years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady.”

He also said his girlfriend, jewelry designer Morgana McNelis, helped him make the decision to take on the role.

“It’s very hard to be with an actor, Hunamm said. “She’s required to share parts of me that she wouldn’t really want to share. With the nature of this role, that’s going to be times 10.”

He added that McNelis “loved the books.”

“She read them and loved them and was really excited about the potential of the opportunity for me. If anything, I think it will make us closer. ”

Fifty Shades of Grey, adapted from the EL James novel, will be released by Focus Features on Aug. 1, 2014 in North America.

Damn, Charlie’s a pro, isn’t he? He covered all the bases – he’s not outright lying, trying to convince the world that he’s taken a great, sought-after role or anything, but he’s finding the silver lining and acknowledging that it will be some kind of acting challenge. The most interesting part is that his girlfriend has read the books and she wanted him to do it. Um… Charlie’s girlfriend knows what she’s getting, right?

Something about a man wearing big chunky rings is just a HUGE turnoff. Big thumbs down for this guy.

    • Hautie says:

I suspect those rings are pieces his girlfriend, the jewelry maker…. custom made for him.

I am more excited about grown men actually dressed in suits! I am sick of seeing grown men and their lack of grooming for events.

I love seeing the new suits and care being taken with their over all appearances. I got all kinds of love for a well groomed man!

      • Jen says:

Uh most men at premieres wear suits. And I’m aware his girlfriend is a jewelry designer. That doesn’t change the fact that he’s wearing them.

  2. Marty says:

Smh… I love Charlie, he’s a great guy and a good actor, but this is making lose respect for him. His hotness is fading for me. Dammit!

  3. eliza says:

    Enjoy career suicide dude.

    • Sara says:

Who is this douche and why cant he just be honest about chasing money and fame?

    • RocketMerry says:

Sigh. I really wish he did not sign on for this mess.
His gf is a moron for even suggesting this.
Or, you know, maybe this is his way to carve himself a little way out of embarrassment: “She made me do it! I said this seemed crappy”.
But yeah, I don’t really want to believe him that kind of guy.

    • MistyNinja says:

Thanks a lot for ruining Charlie for me- 50 shades of emotional abuse and grammatical errors.

This is going to ruin his career. Furthermore, it is going to ruin Sons of Anarchy.

      This book is ruining everything.

    • Rice says:

I may know shit about the movie industry but I do know money-makers. This movie will make lots of money for two reasons. The first is that there are a lot of people out there who liked/loved the books and WANT to see this movie and WILL pay to see it. The second is that some of the people who hate the books will go see it anyway because they are curious. There’s a small number of people who will watch it online or get a boot-legged version and an even smaller number who just won’t see it at all. But in the end, it will make money.

      • eliza says:

In the end, Showgirls made a lot of money too but did nothing but make a mockery of Elizabeth Berkley. Charlie will be on DWTS in a few years.

      • Z says:

        @Eliza…..You absolutely right

      • Anna says:

People liked the books bc it was their own personal spank-bank. It’s the reason that porn is enjoyed in private and not on an Imax screen surrounded by 500 strangers. Well, unless one is into that sort of thing.

  4. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

lol well RIP to his career then, if it embarrassed Robert Pattinson to be primarily known as “that guy from the twilight movie”, it must be doubly embarrassing to be known as “that guy from the twilight fanfic movie”. Can’t believe that he’s trying to act like 50 shades is a serious movie, the book is a parody of itself.

    • Annie says:

He took the role because he couldn’t wait to be a moviestar. Plain and simple. This movie will become a thing, just like the books. He’ll become a household name. But buh-bye credibility!

    • Anname says:

The part about the amazing and “intangible chemistry” in the audition is word for word Twilight as well.

      • Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

@Annie Pretty much, yeah, I would probably start liking him again if he would just say that. @Anname lol that as well, and tbh, Rob had more chemistry with the Dior girl than he ever had with Kristen imo.

    • MaraFan says:

If it wasn’t for Twilight he’d be known as “the guy that mubbles songs at the local pub that was in one of those Potter movies” so what the F ever. Charlie has talent, so maybe he can be seen as more than 50 after this mess is through.

  5. PunkyMomma says:

Thanks for the Jimmy Smits. Still gorgeous. Yum.

  6. Baby says:

He is cute but not hot enough for this role sorry. Oh well.

  7. Mia 4S says:

Oh Charlie no….just no. What a shame that he would go the Twilight fan fiction route. I mean, picking up Sparkles sloppy seconds? Yikes.

  8. Andrea says:

I don’t find him at all attractive but he seems kind and smart.

  9. brin says:

Sounds like the positive spin is coming from his girlfriend.

    • Sardinia says:

No, the spinnin is all Charlie. “Oh I took the role because I have good chemistry with the 22 year old girl playing Anastasia. And also my gf made me do it”. Puhleeeaaase!

  10. Shannon says:

Eek. I really like him, I hope this is a smart career move :/ I’d be sad to see his movie career tank before it really gets going.

  11. pretty says:

Please, to the people saying he’s not hot or cute, you should see this guy on screen. and with that beard and slick back hair, he really isn’t looking good here but he really is just perfect gorgeous looking without beard and normal(?) hair!! ughgughghghg i watched pacific rim twice and he is just beautiful in 3D IMAX screen. whew!

    • fingerbinger says:

Yeah it’s because he looks scruffy that people don’t see how pretty he really is. They need to go watch Queer as Folk… sexy. I like him scruffy though.

      • lady mary. says:

yeah ,not a fan of Charlie but he definetly looks like someone who can be intimidating and sexy at the same time ,which is what that shitty grey is all abt ,iam glad Matt bomer is in no way attatched to this mess

      • Z says:

I seen him cleaned up and I still feel he is not atractive. Everybody has different taste when it comes to looks….He just do not look good to me.

      • Meaghan says:

QAF started my undying love for him. I think he is sexy, and to me comparable to Brad in Legends of the Fall. I think everyone needs to watch QAF then they would understand.

    • Adrien says:

He was hot a decade ago.
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAm-zfxcktE
He looked like Channing Tatum and Heath Ledger. He’s even passable in Paific Rim but now he looks like Spencer Pratt on steroids. I know the facial hair and sleek hairstyle are for his role as Jax Teller but let’s see what he looks like cleaned up.

      • Milo says:

He was so beautiful in that film. I like Charlie a lot and think he’s truly talented, but this role? SMH.

    • Jen34 says:

I barely know who he is, but I came here to say how hot he is in a blonde way. Definitely in the same category those Hemsworth brothers.

  12. MeowuiRose says:

Idk why anyone would think making this movie is a good idea. I read the first book and it was AWFUL! Not sexy, not erotic, not good at all. The writing, plot and character development was atrocious. He is a moron for taking this on and makes me think he is fame hungry and desperate.

  13. Tig says:

Say what you will re the movie, but obviously, he doesn’t think he’s too good for it, or he wouldn’t have signed on. And I get the Matt B petition drive- he is more the CG as described in the book. I could see Charlie H as the brother, but not CG. Curious to see who they get to play Elena.

  14. mia girl says:

He’s hot, no question. Could care less if he’s Grey or not.

Funny thing though is Fifty Shades is Twilight fanfic and Hunnam’s description of the first read/audition and reason why he wanted to do the movie sounds like Twilight casting fanfic.

That’s the same kind of stuff that Hardwick, Pattinson and Stewart said while promoting Twilight, that the chemistry was intense during that first audition. They just had to do the movie together.

So it’s interesting to hear the same thing about this movie. Me thinks there is a plan afoot…

  15. Liz says:

I’m holding out hope that the movie will be much better than the book. You have to keep in mind that Sam Taylor Johnson is a very legitimate director. And a woman. She’s going to have an interesting viewpoint. So as long as E.L. gives her free reign, I’m going to withhold my eulogy for Charlie’s career.

  16. Dhavynia says:

I haven’t read the books but I would watch the movie just because of the hype.
I only saw the first Twighlight movie when it was on cable out of curiosity and watching KStew act was like sticking forks through my eyes, she was so horrible that I couldn’t watch the others and yet she became big so who knows
I’ve only seen Dakota in 21 Jump Street and it was a very small role and maybe she’ll be good for this role

  17. Elodie says:

Well… that check must have a whole lot of zeros in it for Charlie to be excited and feel a “chemistry” alright!

  18. Kt says:

I love how everyone acts like they are so ABOVE 50 shades of grey. “It was crap, this is career suicide, etc” The numbers tell a VERY different story. People need to relax and admit that a little smut is fun and entertaining- exactly what the movies are for!

    • Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

Lol I personally would probably like 50 Shades of grey if it was just poorly written smut, but that’s not it – it’s the disturbing relationship between Anastasia and Christian that I just can’t get behind and if Anastasia was a real person, I’d ask her to go get help and get out of that relationship. Oh, and as for the numbers, read this article lol – http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/10289912/Charity-shops-stuck-with-thousands-of-copies-of-50-Shades-of-Grey.html

      • cr says:

I was amused by this part of the article: “EL James, believed to be the richest writer in the world..”
        Oh, probably not.

      • Kt says:

But the whole point of fiction is that it’s not real. This isn’t a friend who needs saving, it’s a fictional character. People don’t get up in arms about violence in movies or say that violent books “promote murder”. But for some reason the explicit sex and totally fictional relationship has struck a cord with people. I just wish people were more honest about enjoying the book and eventually, the movie. It’s not real, it doesn’t mean women are out looking for billionaires to dominate them, it’s just entertainment!! And the books have sold more than 70 million copies in the US alone. Here are some more accurate numbers for you:
        http://www.businessinsider.com/50-shades-of-grey-by-the-numbers-2013-9?op=1

    • fingerbinger says:

I think the issue is that it is a poorly written book based on Twilight fan fiction. No one is trying to be above anything.

    • Tig says:

I get what you are saying. Another interesting observation was that these books got their start via the Web and then Kindle/ebooks- in other words, initially, they could be an anonymous guilty pleasure. Will those same readers ” come out”, so to speak, and go see the movie at a theater, vs VOD? Remains to be seen.

    • Jen says:

Just because millions of undersexed tweens and middle aged housewives have crappy imaginations and were stupid enough to pay money for this horrible stuff, doesn’t mean it’s any good.

Smut is fun. Smut that promotes abuse and unhealthy BDSM relationships is not.

      • Louminary says:

couldn’t agree more with your first paragraph!

Also, Charlie’s girlfriend loves this book? Ok now I have lost a lot of respect for him, my girl boner has died….

  19. Nicolette says:

Honestly I could give a crap what this article is about, I just love looking at this man. And yes it would hit it, and yes I would go see this stupid movie because of him. *fans self*

  20. brin says:

Is the fact that he’s wearing three shades of grey subtle advertising?

  21. WinterLady says:

I like Alexis Bledel but while she is extremely beautiful, I would never call her sexy. Just doesn’t have it. Glad she isn’t attached to this stupidity, I don’t want to see Rory Gilmore tied up!

  22. Bodhi says:

The part that bothers me most is that he says his GF loved the books.

    • Shannon says:

I know that bothered me as well. He must he dating a dim wit. Sorry to all you 50 shades fans. Also bothered me that HE read the books. Just read the damn script, boo.

      • Bodhi says:

Well I read the first one & half of the second, but I certainly didn’t like them.

        :shudder:

I’m really hoping that the movies will turn out better than the books, but I’m not holding my breath.

      • Shannon says:

I read the first one grudgingly. I could barely get through it. I have a feeling the movie will be BETTER then the books which is usually not the case. Usually the movie never even comes close to how good the book is. But anything is better then that written drivel.

      • Bodhi says:

Exactly! Its certainly what I’m hoping

  23. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

All I can see is Spencer Pratt.

  24. Kara says:

Ay dios mio I think you’re so sexy Charlie 😉

  25. Lucy says:

While the books are a bunch of crap, I think Charlie’s career will be just fine. And he seems nice!

  26. Miss M says:

“He looks comfortable, sexy, even a little sassy.” Not as sassy as the Brit interviewer who talked about his dance moves at the Pacific Rim premiere in London, hahahaha… *Very stiff*

To his girlfriend: careful what you wish for…

  27. Dia says:

I don’t think this is career suicide. If you have watched Son of Anarchy you can really see how great of an actor he is. Not only that he is hot on that show. I think that the book was so simple that they can really improve the dialog.

To his GF, say goodby to your relationship! I don’t think I could ever watch my BF in a move like this. Not only that, this is a 3 movie commitment…yikes

  28. Shannon says:

Admitting he read the book…what a tool. No man should admit that.

  29. Anki says:

    A bad book =/= a bad movie.

I have high hopes that this bad book can be turned into a great movie. It has been done before.

  30. lenje says:

I already like this guy from his interviews. I don’t care about 50 Shades the book, but I must say I am intrigued by the movie, so I’d probably check that out.

This said, I hope what he says about “tangible chemistry” with Dakota Johnson is just what his publicist fed him. His GF might need to watch out :D.

  31. Saffron says:

I can’t imagine that the outcome from this movie will be good.

  32. Lindsey says:

LMAO. After reading Awesomely Luvvie’s live-tweeting of 50 Shades of Grey, I refuse to read this crappy book OR watch the crappy upon which it’s based. Some of us have taste, kthx.

If I want my hunky Hunman, I’ll just binge-watch Sons of Anarchy on Netflix.

  33. Moon says:

Charlie as cg is growing on me. He’s got this confident masculine thing about him. I dont get the matt bomer thing at all. I read that johnson got the role because sam tj liked her audition

  34. TherapyCranes says:

I don’t see the issue. He is a confident sexy man. In my opinion he oozes the same kind of sexuality that Christian did in the book. The book was pretty terrible, tacky and poorly written. However I am not going to say it’s career suicide for Hunnam or say the movie is doomed. The movie is going to do well just because of the fanbase. Hunnam is going to open up more doors for acting since he won’t be typecast as the tough biker guy from SOA.

I honestly believe the only reason people are ripping down Hunnam for taking the role is either because they love or hate the book. It has nothing to do with the actor but rather the emotional response to this role. You don’t think Hunnam is good enough to be your perfect Mr.Grey.. Or you think Hunnam is too good for this trashy smut.

  35. Dar says:

Love the grey suit – a nudge to Fifty Shades?

As for Charlie as Christian, at first I couldn’t picuture it but I am watching the Season 5 of Sons of Anarchy and there is a lot of Christian Grey in Jax.
