Natalie Portman in Dior at the Berlin ‘Thor’ premiere: lovely or cotillion-fug?

wenn20797960

I’m splitting up the photos from last night’s Berlin premiere for Thor 2: The Dark Loki into two posts. This is the Natalie Portman/fashion post. It could have been more interesting except that Elsa Pataky has been NOWHERE. You guys… I sort of miss Elsa. What’s wrong with me? So, in Elsa’s absence, we have Natalie Portman in princess-white Christian Dior Couture.

What is this fabric? Is it really heavy taffeta? I think that’s what it is. I guess I don’t hate the idea of a clean, minimalist, strapless gown in off-white, even though it’s reading more like a fancy-prom dress or, even worse, a debutante’s cotillion gown. Considering what Natalie wore for the London premiere, this is fine. I guess.

Natalie recently gave an interview to The Telegraph about motherhood and feminism. She said:

“I love being a mum. I’m less judgmental than before I had a kid. The biggest thing about parenting is that it is a totally different experience for every person. Everything is cool, there are no rules – I mean, apart from not hurting your kid. Some people breastfeed until their babies are five, and some don’t breastfeed at all. There are no rules about what it means to be a feminist, or a good mother. For some, it’s going to be right to go back to work, for others it’s going to be right to stop working completely.”

Saying that you’re LESS judgmental now that you’re a mom implies that you were totally a judgy bitch before you had a kid. Which is fine. I’m pretty judgy too. I think most people are. But it’s funny that she couldn’t admit it in real time. Maybe it’s something you only realize in retrospect though – like, she thinks back to how she was several years ago and she can’t believe how much she shaded this person or that group.

    Cotillion fug.

I thought it was huge improvement over the dress she wore at the London premiere. Still like the Paris dress a little more though.

I’m actually worried. She used to be thrilled to walk the red carpet for much less prestigious events, so it’s really, really weird she’s missing these Thor premieres.

    • Anna says:

Theories? Just please don’t say something like ‘she’s wizened up and tired of the spotlight.’

      • Eve says:

Oh, please…it’s Remora we’re talking about. She’d NEVER wise up and/or get tired of hogging someone else’s spotlight.

I mean when I say something seems off…and as much as I detest her guts, I sincerely hope there’s nothing wrong with her (and a possible pregnancy).

      • Anna says:

I am now inclined to think that nothing is off there bc my cute little HAMster seems to be in great, playful spirits.

      • Eve says:

But he’s not (openly) smilling in a single picture, Anna. Let me see if I can find one (over Getty Images).

EDIT: ok, apparently he is in some of them (not straight to the cameras though).

      • Dommy Dearest says:

They did just move into a new place. Could be getting the house set up and then she’ll appear at the US premiers? She’s pretty well known in Europe, right?

      • rose says:

Elsa was announce to be filming Fast 7. Shes probably in Atlanta where the are filming

      • Becky says:

“Just please don’t say something like ‘she’s wizened up and tired of the spotlight.’ ”

Not trying to be mean (because you’re not the first person I’ve seen make this mistake) but “wizened” means shriveled up, LOL. I think you mean she “wisened up”, as in: she became more wise.

It is kind of a funny visual imagining Elsa shriveled up like an old raisin, though. 😀

    • blue marie says:

What if Natalie ask that she not be there? Is it possible something like that happened?

    • Ellen says:

I thought Pataky was maybe, possibly, theoretically looking pregnant on the Rush carpets. Mostly in terms of looking peaky, with some possible boob swelling. (I cannot believe I just wrote that.)

      Here’s Toronto on the 9th:
      http://www.celebitchy.com/321354/chris_hemsworth_wears_a_3-piece_suit_for_tiff_rush_premiere_would_you_hit_it/

      And Rome on Sept. 16th:
      http://www.celebitchy.com/322637/chris_hemsworth_shows_off_his_darker_hair_in_rome_would_you_hit_it/

And that’s the last she’s been seen. So who knows.

      • Anna says:

So maybe she is too visibly pregnant now but they dont want to announce yet? Why? it’s good PR and she must be past the 1st trimester now…

      • Nanea says:

As much as I don’t like Elsa, but what if she were really pregnant and having health issues? That’s what I’ve been thinking ever since she’s been absent from red carpets.

    • j.eyre says:

I kind of like Kaiser’s guess that she’ll be out for the US premiere. She could be pregnant and staying in LA to get them settled into the new house. She over 35 which I believe still automatically categorizes (erroneously) your pregnancy as high risk so flying is ill advised until the 2nd trimester. Plus, she will want to be near her OB for now.

Or maybe her hair is in the “in-between” stage and she just CAN’T!

    • Amory says:

Maybe she’s just home with the kid. What was once fun, dressing up and looking good, is just hard work. I don’t know anything about this woman, but I don’t get the hate. Is there something I missed other than the fact that she married a good looking man. Are folks just assuming that she’s trying to ride her man’s coattails because is more famous?

  4. MonicaQ says:

I think everyone throws shade at some point and then look back and say, “Wow, I was a bitch.” Hell, I know I did it with parents in the grocery store in my early 20s. It went from, “Jfc, you have a week old baby, what are you doing out here?” to “Poor person, they probably haven’t slept in so long and they need formula, etc..” in ten years.

  5. GlimmerBunny says:

Lovely. She looks like Audrey Hepburn!

  6. allons-y alonso says:

that horrible bulky dress looks like it’s trying to drag her down onto the floor

  7. Renee says:

She has aged. I don’t mean that in a negative way, it’s just that she went from looking to be perpetually 15 years old and now she finally looks her age and it seems to have happened overnight.

    • Insomniac says:

She definately had surgery to ‘stay’ young. Except, like every actress who does that, the surgery just made her face tight, and her features ‘off’.

  8. Prim says:

I like what she says. Realising I’ve failed miserably at being a perfect parent and being hugged a lot by twins who don’t give a damn about all of that, has knocked the edge of my professional judgmentalism.

  9. Elise says:

Awww, no Hiddles hamming it up for the cameras? 🙁

  10. Chrissy says:

A big improvement but Dior dresses are so disappointing these days. They’re boring or fug or boring AND fug.

  11. j.eyre says:

Nat and CHemboy together look like Red Carpet Barbie and Ken.

    • Anna says:

She’s a bit short for a Barbie, non?
I have mentally photoshopped myself into the photos of them together.

      • j.eyre says:

Then you would be Red Carpet Ken and Kick-@ss Awesomeness.

(I apologize – am shamefully positive today, it must be freaking everyone out. I will shut my hand in a door or something to try and dial it down a notch)

      • Anna says:

        NO no no no no.
I am reveling in all this positivity.
        LOVE YOU HARD!

  12. lucy2 says:

I like the dress. Simple and sort of classic, perfect for a premiere. It’d be way too boring for an awards ceremony though.

  13. Amory says:

For her, this is pretty decent. Not wow, but nothing to complain about.

  14. judyjudy says:

I think she looks so pretty.

  15. Zbornak Syndrome says:

Those darts on her bodice should start just BELOW the nipple. This is why they are making her nip look pointy. I’m a self taught beginning tailor, and even a novice would know this. Darting is wonderful on a woman, when it is done correctly! I’m wondering how much that gown musta cost? Bet she overpaid or had to been a freebee

    • poppy says:

      ITA -the darts are heinous.
also, there’s is something very stiff going on at the waist under the ribbon.
the first picture looks like she’s hiding behind some heavy drapes blowing in a hurricane like wind.
      too heavy.

  16. Eva says:

I bet she really regrets settling for no-name, loser centipede. I mean she and Tom always are happy and smiling togather and when she is with her own husband, she looks so cold and likewise. I think she is getting a divorce sooner or later. He dumped his live-in girlfriend for a Hollywood actress so he could have access to the celebrity lifestyle, which is awful. He will leave her for another woman when she makes more money and gets him more things. She should have picked a better guy to settle with then. I hope she got herself a pre-nup. Natalie and Kanye West seem to attract gold-diggers.

  17. Cazzee says:

If that dress had pockets, I would like it.

  18. kpist says:

I like the dress. Taffeta darling!

  19. drea says:

Bridesmaid fug. A friend of mine made her bridesmaids (yes, including me) wear something almost identical to this in candy pink.

  20. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

That dress, for some reason, reminds me of that green gown that Edith Head made for Grace Kelly. Maybe it’s the draping??

  21. Aila says:

    She’s wearing a watch again.

    • mia says:

      Horrible, isn’ t it?

I wondered why the look and the dress seemed so familiar. Then I realized it is only a better version of the hideous Dior dress she wore for the last oscars.

  22. ZAK says:

    The dress is okay.

  23. Janeite says:

I love her hair and makeup; especially her eyeshadow. Gorgeous! I love the look of the dress but it doesn’t seem to fit her well. I agree with the other commenter who mentioned that the darts on the bodice are not done well. And the skirt seems a tad too long in some pics. But her overall look is good. The dress from the Paris premier is still my favorite though.

  24. Kristen says:

LOVE LOVE LOVE that dress!!! She looks so beautiful!!!

  25. Alexa says:

I’m not a fan, but she looks FIERCE!

  26. Fan says:

I like her. She is not a try hard.

  27. Hello says:

Ther dress looks good but would have just looked AMAZING in another color.

  28. d b says:

Um what? So, there are no rules to being a good mother, or what it means to be a feminist? Does she even speak English, because I have no clue what the hell she is saying. But I do think Natalie would be a lot more fun to watch if she got over lookig like an Audrey Hepburn clone.

  29. genevieve says:

The dress fabric looks like peau de soie to me. I’m not part of the cotillion set, but it looks nice and elegant to me. Nothing particularly interesting, but pretty enough.
