Lupita Nyong’o on meeting Oprah: ‘She is so ordinary and yet so extraordinary’

After CB and I saw 12 Years a Slave this weekend, I think she’s become a ride-or-die loonie for Chiwetel Ejiofor (she really wants him to win Best Actor now). But for me, Lupita Nyong’o was the delicate, tragic heart of the film and I really want her to rule the awards season (I want Chiwetel to win stuff too, but I’m ride-or-die for Lupita now). The Best Supporting Actress category is going to be just as stacked as the Best Actor category – there is an embarrassment of riches this year when it comes to supporting ladies, from Julia Roberts in August: Osage County, to Oprah in The Butler, to Sally Hawkins in Blue Jasmine (I love Hawkins but that role isn’t particularly award-worthy to me), to Octavia Spencer in Fruitvale Station, to Amy Adams in American Hustle (maybe? Or is she the lead?).

Basically, it will boil down to Julia versus Oprah versus Lupita. Who will come out victorious? As I’ve said before, there’s a possibility in my mind that Oprah will back away from campaigning if she wants Lupita to get it. And now my theory might be actualized! Vanity Fair has a new interview with Lupita where she talks about meeting – and getting a hug from – THE OPRAH.

These days are a bit of a blur for Lupita Nyong’o, the breakout actress whose supporting role in 12 Years a Slave has been earning her accolades since the drama’s Toronto Film Festival premiere. Her performance as Patsey, the prized slave and brutalized love interest of an abusive slave owner (Michael Fassbender) is one of the most heart-wrenching threads in Steve McQueen’s epic ensemble. Already a favorite for next year’s Best Picture Oscar, the film has earned countless endorsements from everyone including Oprah, who teared up at the mere mention of the historical drama during an interview with BBC before dismissing the film as too “devastating” to discuss.

At the Fox Searchlight holiday party in Los Angeles on Friday though, Nyong’o told us that it was Oprah who recently rendered her speechless during her most surprising interaction of the award season lead-up. “I did the Hollywood Reporter roundtable with her,” Nyong’o remembered, explaining that the talk legend sneak-attacked her. “I was sitting at my makeup station and the hair stylist looked at me in the mirror and mouthed, ‘Oprah.’ I was like, ‘What?!’ It was like slow motion. I got up. I turned around and she was there. Her arms were outstretched and she gave me a big hug. She was like, ‘You were amazing!’”

How does one even respond to such unexpected affection from the world’s reigning media empress? “I was like, ‘Hi Oprah,’” she said, squeaking out the last two words. “It just happened. Time is a blur. I don’t even know what day it is. She was just such a lovely woman. So ordinary and yet so extraordinary.”

Her interaction was made slightly less intimidating by the fact that, minutes before, she had been introduced to some other Hollywood heavyweights. “Before that, I had just met Emma Thompson and Julia Roberts. By the time I met [Oprah], I was a little numb. And then the next day, I met Harrison Ford.”

It has been a whirlwind year for the Kenyan actress. After filming 12 Years a Slave shortly after her graduation from Yale’s School of Drama, Nyong’o barely had time to decompress from the psychologically draining experience before moving all of her worldly possessions to Brooklyn.

“I had no time to just chill,” she explained. She said that her only way of unwinding from Patsey during this hectic time was the occasional massage, plus “meditation, listening to music, and eating good food.” While other acting peers might be jealous of a classmate who is getting Oscar buzz a year after graduation, Nyong’o says that her classmates “are thrilled” for her. “I come from a very close class. I lucked out because drama schools are often very competitive . . . I have fourteen classmates.” She admitted that while she’s trying to keep her hopes tempered, they would be upset if she does not get any nominations come winter.

In the meantime, the actress has already switched acting gears by filming a contemporary action thriller with Liam Neeson which is due in theaters in February, shortly before the 2014 Oscars. About an Air Marshall who must save an international flight from peril, the film has a very fitting title for the busy actress and serious awards season contender: Non-Stop.

[From Vanity Fair]

Lupita’s next movie is a shoot ‘em up Liam Neeson film? Is that bad news or good news? I don’t know. But I know the hug from Oprah was good news. Oprah can pull rank like nobody’s business, and if Oprah wanted to show little Lupita who was top dog, she would have. But I think Oprah must have seen 12 Years a Slave and just decided that Lupita deserves all of the acclaim she’s getting.

Also, what do you think about this? “She admitted that while she’s trying to keep her hopes tempered, they would be upset if she does not get any nominations come winter.” Now I’m worried. She’s definitely going to be nominated, right?

      Simply stunning.

As an aside: so, designers notice this right? If I read this correctly, 12 Years is her first movie. She’s already looking INCREDIBLE and getting amazing outfits on the red carpet! Honestly, if I were a designer I’d kill to dress that woman. So gorgeous.

  4. Bianca says:

What an astonishing beauty. I think she’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

  5. Lark says:

She’s so beautiful…I think the Liam Neeson film is a really good move. His films almost universally do well at the box office, and if she wants to mix it up and do the occasional main stream film it’s good for her to have a film like that on her resume. I wouldn’t be surprised if she did awards baity films and then mixed them up with more mainstream films…I think she has a lot of potential to be a major movie star and not just an indie darling.

Also, ANNA WINTOUR PUT THIS WOMAN ON THE COVER OF VOGUE. Sorry lol. Had to let that out. She is incredibly talented and has major style…..She deserves a damn cover.

  6. Maya says:

This woman is gorgeous and did a brilliant job in 12 years a slave.

As for Oprah – let’s wait for the awards season and then the real and jealous Oprah will be revealed. Oprah will do anything to get a second Oscar and she will play hardball to get it as well.

Oprah has been praising movies about black people for years but she only said one setence about 12 years a slave. Why? Because that movie is up against her own movie the butler.

    • Kim1 says:

Why woudn’t she if she feels her movie and her performance is better?

    • pwal says:

Sorry… gotta disagree with you. During the last years of the Oprah show, she rarely shined spotlight on Black film. I remember the time when she finally decided to showcase Something New (Sanaa Latham/Simon Baker)- she waited a month until she had them on the show and the movie was already out of the theaters. The time to throw support behind that movie was prior to or immediately following opening weekend. Plus, she’s cronies with Tyler Perry who is the poster boy for mediocre Black film, who she routinely partner with because, for some reason, HW has tapped him as the future of Black film (here’s hoping that Best Man Holiday usher in the renaissance that happened in the 90s)

Plus, Oprah’s signature of approval re 12YAS, at least via Twitter, was accompanied by a plug for her Iylanna (sp)/TO special on OWN.

Love this girl! I will always click and respond to any post you write about her. Her style, flawless skin and accomplishments got me reeeeally diggin her.

  8. Moiselle says:

So very pretty. And grounded. And she seems to have some common sense. Hollywood, please use her in lots of things. Like a great movie with Viola Davis. Because they are gorgeous and talented.

Is it okay if I say her skin is just gorgeous? She glows.

  9. Simmie says:

I just saw 12 Years a Slave yesterday and was completely awed by Lupita. She was the best part of the film – and the film was incredible. She’s definitely my pick for Best Supporting Actress.

  10. LadySlippers says:

    I want to see 12YAS!

And Lupita is simply stunning. WOW.

Hopefully Oprah will concede graciously in order to honour 12YAS. It sounds as if this movie should make a clean sweep at any and all award shows.

  11. Maria says:

She is stunning and such a regal look to her.

I also like that she’s going to do the Liam movie because it’s something completely different from her debut film; she’s not allowing herself to be typecasted and this will show a completely different side of her range.

I am LOVING how much campaigning she, Chiwetel, and Steve are doing (and being subtle about it too); it’s refreshing to see these three at the forefront of coverage vs Fassy (whom I adore) , Pitt, and Cumberbatch.

I can’t wait to see what’s in store for her career.

  12. Janeite says:

Her performance in Twelve Years a Slave was exquisite. I am so pleased to see her getting recognition for this role and hope it leads to wonderful things for her. She’s lovely to look at too.

  13. Nanea says:

    I ♥ Lupita.

Such a beauty, and that gorgeous smile. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for her this awards season.

  14. meh says:

The picture of her in the grey and black…just amazing. She is freaking glowing.

  15. Sisi says:

such a pleasure to look at pics of her after all those disappointing Hunger Games red carpet outfits
