Jennifer Lawrence: ‘I’ve built a career. I need to build a life & not work for awhile’

Jennifer Lawrence

I was hoping that we’d have some pictures of Jennifer Lawrence at last night’s NYC premiere of American Hustle, but no such luck. She was due back in Atlanta for ongoing Mockingjay filming, so she had to skip out on wearing what would have surely been another Dior confection. JLaw did attend the NYC photocall yesterday and wore a pretty cool cobalt blue Alexander McQueen dress, but we don’t have pics. Hence my use of new-ish American Hustle movie stills for this post. Look at that body … BAM!

Anyway, I enjoyed weeks of near-daily fresh Jennifer Lawrence photos, so I’m sad that we haven’t had any new ones for awhile. She’s pretty good at flying under the radar when she’s not tending to her official press duties. Oscar season should be good for JLaw fans, but at least those who do not adore her can take a brief respite from her “aw shucks” media routine. Jennifer is probably enjoying the media break too. It’s a good thing that some outlets are still releasing interviews from the Catching Fire blitz. Sit back and be charmed:

Behind the clever banter and disarming repartee, beyond the glamorous red-carpet Dior gowns, in a private dining room on the second floor of a downtown hotel, her loafer-clad feet kicked up behind her, sits the real Jennifer Lawrence.

And all this actress wants, right now, is a Corona. Or an Amstel Light. But the only brews available are of the artisanal variety, so Lawrence looks flummoxed. “I’m a Budweiser person. So I don’t really understand,” she says, as the waitress goes to great lengths to explain the intricate differences between the pale ales on offer.

Away from the awards-season hubbub, which again envelopes her for her role as a foxy yet foolish wife in American Hustle, Lawrence is a self-aware woman trying to have some version of a regular existence. “I’ve built my career. I need to build my human life. I need to get a house and connect to the people around me and not work for a little while,” she says.

But for now, she does her best to retain some sense of routine in an existence that’s mostly lived in hotels, fueled by room service. Her on-again boyfriend, Nicholas Hoult, helps keep her sane, away from prying eyes. “We’re really good at it,” she says of maintaining their under-the-radar romance.

She’s infatuated with her two young nephews, whom she FaceTimes every night. She decompresses by watching reality TV, in particular Keeping Up with the Kardashians. And she keeps her best-actress Oscar, won for last year’s Silver Linings Playbook, at her mom’s house to avoid any weirdness when friends come over, to try to nip in the bud the possibility of people standing at attention around her.

“I just get allergic to that kind of thing. People treating you differently when you don’t feel any differently is really alienating. You can see, the way they look at you. I can see if that was who I surrounded myself with, that’s why you change,” she says. “I find people who don’t change. That’s where I get my reality.”

And her ability to say exactly the right thing at the right time? It’s a gift. “She’s an amazing study of people. She really understands the teeniest differences in people. She can read people in a second,” says The Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence. “She can figure you out in an instant. She does it with such ease, from the gut.”

[From USA Today]

So Jennifer loves cheap beer and hanging out with Nick Hoult at home. No wonder we rarely see her out and about unless she absolutely has to be photographed. I do feel for her because she continually spoke of being so tired during her last press tour, but I doubt JLaw will be taking any real time off anytime soon. The Mockingjay movies will run until mid 2015. I hope she keeps her health together until then because she those recent crazy stomach pains can’t be good news. I know people roll their eyes when they hear actresses complaining about their schedules, but I think Jennifer is under a lot of pressure to keep striking while her iron is hot.

Well, I liked her up until the bit about watching the Kartrashians, and then she lost me.

    • Marty says:

      Ugh, right?

    • ZigZagZoey says:

Hahahhahaha! Bad BAD PR move to admit to watching that!
Silly JLaw….You’re supposed to BASH Kim for good PR!

      • phlyfiremama says:

Exactly. I wish the kartrashians would fall off the face of the planet myself but obviously a LOT of people watch them~I think it is the “having someone to make fun of” mentality. It speaks of a herd mentality all its’ own to “bash” the kartrahians because that is the “cool” thing to do. If people just ignored them, they would go away but since people make such a big deal about loving to hate them, they stick around that much longer. I LIKE JLaw even more that in the face of that “bash them!!” mentality it would be so easy to slide into, she says what she actually feels. Oh, and JLaw? Forget about that Budweiser swill, there really ARE much better beers than that!! Try an Alaskan Pale Ale or a Fat Tire, those are WONDERFUL starter beers!! It isn’t being a beer snob so much as caring about what you are tasting. You can always do a side by side tasting, usually good beer places worth a darn will give you different samples to taste or even sell whats called a “flight”~a selection of small glasses of different beers so you can taste different ones without “committing”. 😉 Join the Craft beer/microbrewery revolution~huzzaw!!

    • CC says:

She’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, is she? she’s nice and all, but doesn’t seem too smart. Not for watching the Kartrashians, just in general.

      • Daisy says:

@CC: I have two older sisters and both watch the Kardashians…one is a doctor and the other is an architect…both Yale graduates. They watch the show to unwind, have a few beers and make fun of it all.

Now, I don’t think it’s appointment television but when we all get together, they’ll start talking about it and crack everyone up about some episode they caught. People unwind in such ways sometimes.

      • CC says:

I said – not because she watches the Kardashians. She just doesn’t seem too smart to me. Natalie Portman seems smart. Cate Blanchett seems smart. Jennifer, not so much. Her comments on certain issues seem dumb, if not homophobic ( but of course, everybody forgives her because she’s so darn adorable). I know she’s young, but I know a lot of people her age who are smarter.

      • Daisy says:

I don’t think Jennifer Lawrence is dumb at all but, that’s my opinion.

As far as that BLIND possibly being about her, I don’t buy it. A break perhaps for a few months but I don’t think retirement is in the cards.

      • K says:

I don’t think she’s dumb. I just don’t think she has academic/intellectual intelligence in the way Portman and Claire Danes, say, seem to. She’s not very well educated, comparatively speaking, and her interests lie in other directions. Which is fair enough – I mean, her job is pretending to be other people and she does that extremely well. And the PR side of her job is handled brilliantly, for now at least. She’s young and some of her comments on LGBT issues made me wince as well, but being insular isn’t such a crime from a red-state raised, home-ed-from-14 kid. She’s likely to learn better, especially given the industry she’s in.

I don’t really agree that people who aren’t academic or erudite are dumb. There are many forms of intelligence, and she seems to be pretty street smart in terms of handling sudden extreme fame.

      • Liv says:

K, totally agree. Just because you are not academic doesn’t mean you are stupid. And there are tons of people who are academic and pretty dumb.

      • Spooks says:

I didn’t say she isn’t academic, I said she seems dumb. To me.

      • lucy2 says:

I don’t know, I think she actually seems pretty sharp, in a street smarts kind of way. She seems to know how to handle herself, and deals with interviews and talk show appearances very well. If she were dumb, I don’t think she’d do that as well as she does.

  2. Patricia says:

She’s the best, yes she should curl up at home with her man and do some Kardashian marathons, she deserves it. It’s not like the public will forget her, she’s very special.

  3. Melissa says:

I do think she’s someone trying to stay normal in the midst of all of this. And what some people don’t understand about success is that sometimes you’re not the one who has changed after you’ve had it but the people around you. It’s good to strive to retain a sense of normalcy but that will only be remain possible if she becomes very selective (i.e. Daniel Day-Lewis).

    • RMJ says:

Here’s what is dangerous about fame, to me: you miss out on the changes you should be making in a normal life by trying to stay falsely normal while everyone goes crazy around you. You should be changing during your early 20s – struggling and working hard and finding your own identity. She’s missing out on that stage because of her great success and she’s working herself half to death doing it. I like JLaw, but I can feel a backlash coming soon and it’s not going to be pretty. I really hope she’s enjoyed her universal acclaim.

    • Han says:

@melissa I don’t think its natural for a 23 year old to live the kind of life daniel lives, she has to strike a balance. But i find that unless she has something to promote you don’t really see her, so compared to many of her contemporaries she does a good job at staying under the radar. Its more a matter of how much she works because with work comes promotional duties. Regarding Daniel Day Lewis, I read about him. He had a pretty colourful life as a young man. Lots of girlfriends and gossip about him in his 20s and 30s. He worked a lot and built the career that now allows him to pick one project from the top shelf every 3-4 years. He wasn’t the cerebral character of today in his youth. Jennifer comes across as pretty low key and drama free in her personal life so far.

  4. aims says:

I think Jennifer has a great work ethic. I understand she works hard, and I relate. it’s easy to loose perspective when you feel that you’re constantly going. I think it’s great that she knows this and wants to reconnect. She seems like a really cool chick. In a perfect world both she and Adele would be my besties.

  5. MisJes says:

I think it’s so lovely that despite the insane, heavy schedule she must keep, she still finds the time FaceTime her nephews every night. I’ve seen an interview from the Catching Fire rounds where they asked Jennifer to share a moment in time she would have loved to freeze, and she said when her nephew was born, and he was the size of a roast chicken. Lol!

Family is obviously incredibly important to her, and I love that she tries hard to stay as involved with and connected to them as possible.

  6. CaribbeanLaura says:

This is why I don’t understand the “haters” of Jennifer Lawrence. The fact is when she not promoting a film ( which is her job) we don’t ever see her. She doesn’t show up on random red carpets, is not out partying every night and generally keeps to herself. She is doing it right IMO. Oh and watching the Kardashians is a problem of mine too. Curse you E!

    • Gossy says:

People don’t see her because her pap photos don’t generate that much interest….people would rather hear her in an interview saying “the right thing” like how she’s not saving live and doctors/firefighters deserve her huge paycheck.

Plus when she’s papped, she’s giving the finger to paps or joking later about putting antifreeze in their coffee….showing the same attitude as Kristen Stewart.

Anyway I don’t have a problem with giving paps the finger or saying bad things to/about them, but any actress (not just K-Stewart) who does that would be trashed terribly. Heck anytime a young actor/actress (even if they’re 18 and above) who is seen with a suspicious joint HAS to issue a statement to deflect negative press. But Jennifer? nope. Who cares, she’s just more awesome.

      • CaribbeanLaura says:

You’re right, she has done things that when other celebs do it they get tons of flak. But the reason I think she gets a pass is because of her public persona, which I believe is cultivated but still a large reflection on who she is. And I don’t think she’s the only one. I bet you if Emma Stone started flashing middle fingers we’d all be like “she’s so hip and saucy!”

      • Liv says:

        Blabla.

  7. rudy says:

omg. is SHE the blind? Supposedly, a famous celebrity is going to retire very soon. Someone shockingly young to leave the business who wants to marry her SO and have babies and leave the spotlight. After finishing her last projects.

    Go Jennifer!
    http://blindgossip.com/?p=58878

    • Dani2 says:

I take blinds with a spoonful of salt but that would be crazy if it was her. I would actually be rooting for her to walk away from the spotlight, Hollywood does insane things to people and I really like Jen.

    • blue marie says:

I seriously doubt it, if I had to guess I would say it’s Mila Kunis (simply because she’s mentioned leaving the business for a while) Plus Jennifer comes from Kentucky, she wouldn’t need to move all the way to London to get some privacy, when she could simply go home.

    • Sarah says:

guess where they have the info from. like most media outlets they have access to interviews and bits, etc before the readers. the site here posts this as it is and blind gossip manufactures a story around it.

blind items are made up in 99% of the cases. this is one of those items thats posted to make other items seem credible. because why make this blind? there is nothing a celeb could sue for, no libel or defamation so no reason to post it as a blind item. the orginal reason for blinds was to be able to publish something very risky in a legal way. this is not risky in the slightest.

they will reveal it to be her and then point at the blind when people say blind items are only fiction.

  8. eliza says:

    She is growing on me.

  9. Dani2 says:

I love this crazy, controversial girl. I really hope that she’s able to build a healthy personal life outside of her success – I know she’s got a good family unit behind her but I hope she’s able to get good friendships that will really keep her grounded and not just surround herself with yes-people. I saw Catching Fire for the second time last week and the CF soundtrack has been playing on my iPod non-stop. So yeah, I’m on a Jennifer-high and I can’t wait to see American Hustle, I really think she might actually win that second Oscar. The backlash might be insane but she actually deserves it this time.

  10. Anna Moon 85 says:

I love her, but she has a million projects lined up so I doubt she’ll take time off anytime soon. I’m looking forward to American Hustle. I thought she went after Kim when promoting the first Hunger Games, so I’m kind if surprised she watches the Kardashians.

  11. bns says:

    Yes. Go away.

    • JALorden says:

      IA, @bns.

I’m so tired of her every day girl routine. Yes, we get it. You’re normal! You like cheap beer! You really really want to eat food! You do stupid things haha just like we do, you’re awesome!

No. Go away. I think she’s playing it up and I’m so annoyed by herself her lately.

  12. Talie says:

She’s only been super famous for like a year and half… so I have no problem giving her a break, especially since she isn’t blowing it by falling out of clubs and acting a fool.

  13. GIRLFACE says:

I can’t believe she watches the Kardashians. Ew. I like her and I think it’s cool she’s doing this kind of. She’s probably set for life after the Hunger Games. It would be kind of cool to get rich retire early and spend the rest of your life not famous. Then you’re always remembered as young and hot and if you ever want to come back it would prob be a big deal and all anticipated and stuff. Good for her, cash out and live your own life bb.

  14. Grant says:

I’m living for her up-do hair game in this movie.

  15. floretta50 says:

The problem I have with this actress and Hollywood is how she is cast in roles that really is for a more mature actress. Silver Linings husband is old enough to be her dad, in American Hustle Ms Lawrence looks like 15 or 16 and the rest of the cast members look old enough to be either her ma,pa , grandma or grand pa. She is dressed and made up to look like a mature older person but still comes off way too young for the movie to depict realism, Hollywood have found a winning formula, sex appeal and youth sells) but i am one of the working poor $20.00 to see a movie is a lot, i sat through Silver Linings saying good lord that girl look so young it’s just not for real.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

In American Hustle she’s the trophy wife–so if her character married at 17 or 18, then her age is perfect. Originally, Jennifer and Amy’s roles were switched–the wife was the older woman (i.e. Amy) and the girlfriend was the younger one (Jennifer)–but Russell switched the ages, because he wanted to see how Jennifer and Christian work together.

    • paranormalgirl says:

The role in “American Hustle” was written for her.

      • Lark says:

I love Jennifer, but I think there is a problem with the age thing…..it’s obviously not her fault, but Hollywood has an issue with this. 24 year old Emma Stone is Colin Firth and Bradley Cooper’s love interest in her upcoming films, for example.

They specifically write roles for much younger women, or they cast much younger women, and it’s not a great symptom in Hollywood. DOR specifically wrote a great, juicy supporting part for a 22 year old when the originally script (he did a page one re-write) had a much older actress. In the SLP book, Tiffany is supposed to be 30 plus. I think she’s a fabulous actress, but I think Amy Adams could have pulled off Tiffany or they could have kept the part in the script for an “older actress”……

    • lucy2 says:

I thought she was really great in Silver Linings, but at the same time agree with you about the age difference between the characters/actors.

  16. themummy says:

I truly, honestly do not understand why people say she has an “aw shucks” routine. I have never once gotten that vibe from her. Anyway, good for her in wanting to have time for real life in addition to screen-life. Also, she’s beautiful.

  17. lunchcoma says:

I actually think that might be a smart move. She has three upcoming franchise films (the two Hunger Games ones and the next X-Men film). She also has a drama with Bradley Cooper completed and will be filming the Dumb and Dumber sequel. She’s already won one Oscar and been nominated for another, with yet another possible nomination this year, so she’s established she has acting chops.

To the extent she can be criticized, it would be that she’s sometimes cast in roles too young for her (it makes me cringe that she keeps getting cast across from Bradley Cooper) and that she’s a bit overexposed at the minute. Taking some time off next year could help with both of those things, and I think her career is strong enough that she’ll have quality roles available for her after she catches her breath.

  18. LB says:

The comparisons to K Stewart in the Jennifer Lawrence posts are getting pretty obnoxious. There’s a reason I stopped reading about and commenting on her and R Pattinson, only to have it haunt me in posts about people I actually like. I will never escape them. Sigh.

I can see Jennifer Lawrence wanting a normal life. She usually has one, and it appeared to me that the awards season did make her uncomfortable at times. I also think Nick Hoult likes to keep a low profile. Once the franchise is over, I can see her going for smaller movies.

  19. stellalovejoydiver says:

I understand her being exhausted, but if she wants a normal life she has to say no, she didn’t have to sign on to all these projects after THG is finished, her schedule is booked out until 2016.
I can’t really feel for her when she keeps lining up project after project.

  20. Nerd Alert says:

I still like her, but Budweiser? Girl, no.

  21. mark says:

She’s actress, she doesn’t work in a coal mine why does she need a break? She already has months of rest.

  22. M. says:

I really don’t think Lawrence is asking anyone to feel sorry for her (that’s kind of a radical interpretation of the text, LOL!).

Simply put, Jennifer Lawrence believes the time is right for a break. Mockingjay will be finished filming in May (that’s parts 1 and 2, altogether). A little promotion for X-Men Days of Future Past (Mid-May) then about six months off until promotion for Mockingjay (forgive me, I’m a big Hunger Games fan so, I know the filming schedule, LOL!). Anyway, I read an interview recently, where Lawrence talked about taking a break…not retiring, but a break and if I’m not mistaken, she mentioned about six months. Makes sense.

  23. M. says:

@CC: Yeah, sounds great…good for Jennifer Lawrence!. I know people who have been able to do the same thing, take an extended amount of time off after making some good investments, selling a business, etc., and I think the same for them…good for them. If you are in the position to do something like that, that’s great.

Regarding American Hustle, I’m so excited for this film!. I was wondering how it would be received and it seems to be garnering terrific buzz. Apparently, there’s an amazing scene between Lawrence and Adams that everyone is talking about (showdown scene) can’t wait!.

  24. KevinA says:

The BI is cr@p- Egypt, WTF?-, however…

Yes, the 2nd Mockingjay film comes out in ’15, but filming for both ends in June ’14. Potential summer-plus break? That’s my guess.

That said, remember the Enquirer from Aug.? Yeah, it was pretty much all true. Exhaustion? Check. Underloved/missing her family? Check. Taking a break? Check.

BTW: It’s the little things with her, like being lost when being told about artisanal beers. LOL

  25. blunt talker says:

She deserves a break because she has been running from movie set to movie set for about 2 or 3 years. I like this young lady and her way of being her casual self, if people would let her. Some people criticize her out jealousy because she has achieved so much in such a short like span. Some people have been this business 20 to 30 years and still haven’t had Jennifer’s success. When its your time its your time to go with the flow. This kind of success doesn’t happen everyday no matter what your age. I’m glad she’s taking a break to do other things that’s not movie related.
