Is Matthew Rhys ‘the reason’ Keri Russell’s marriage ended earlier this month?

In early December, Keri Russell announced her split from her husband of seven years, Shane Deary. We didn’t cover it because… well, I’ve always sort of thought Keri is kind of boring – unless she’s bumbling around The Mommy Wars, that is. Shane and Keri have two kids together – River and Willa. They seemed solid. All of the press I’ve read about Keri over the past few years was basically like “she’s really grounded and she lives a very normal life in Brooklyn with her husband and kids.” But apparently there was trouble in Brooklyn. And that “trouble” might have been Welsh dong. Yes, there’s a rumor going around that Keri might have been banging her costar in The Americans, Matthew Rhys. I love Matthew Rhys. He’s Welsh and he’s adorable. So… what happened?

Keri Russell is spending a lot of time with her “The Americans” co-star Matthew Rhys after announcing her divorce — sparking rumors the pair are embarking on a romance.

Multiple sources tell Page Six that Russell — who announced earlier this month that she and her husband Shane Deary have split after seven years of marriage — has been spotted “looking affectionate” with handsome Welsh-born actor Rhys, her on-screen husband on the hit FX show.

One source who spotted the disarmingly charming Rhys, who is single, and Russell recently sharing an intimate lunch at ABC Kitchen, told us, “Seeing the way they are together I could have sworn they were a couple. They were so touchy-feely, drinking and laughing.”

Another source tells us that Russell and Rhys have become such close friends they have spent time with their respective families.

Russell, 37, and Rhys, 39, are currently in New York filming Season 2 of “The Americans,” in which they star as Soviet KGB agents posing as a married couple. Their reps didn’t respond to repeated requests for comment.

In early December, Russell’s publicist confirmed her marriage to Deary — with whom she has son River, 6, and daughter Willa, nearly 2 — was over, telling People, “They have been separated since early summer. The separation is amicable and their focus is on their children.”

Former “Brothers & Sisters” star Rhys, who lives in Santa Monica, Calif., and will soon play Mr. Darcy in the BBC drama “Death Comes To Pemberley,” recently talked about his famously single status, telling UK newspaper Metro, “I am lucky in a way because I am still single — much to my mother’s fury — so I can embrace the gypsy lifestyle [of an actor] and enjoy it. Many of my friends now have wives and kids, and they find juggling the two incredibly hard.”

And he said in a 2012 interview, “My mother’s despairing. In the last year-and-a-half I haven’t been in the same place for more than six months . . . but, yeah, I do enjoy the single life. Also I haven’t met her yet, so . . . until then . . . ”

[From Page Six]

I didn’t know he was “famously single” when I started paying attention to him several years ago. Somebody – one of you, I’m sure – claimed he was gay. So is he? Or is he just a fun Welsh bachelor who has a lady in every port? Is he a gay dude helping his lady friend and coworker through a difficult time in her life or is he “the reason” his lady friend is getting a divorce? Very interesting.

Wow, best hairdo ever! And also, really photogenic.

  2. shannon says:

maybe he is a nicer guy, but definitely a step down in the looks department. I loved Felicity and still think Keri is so, so pretty. I just wish she’d eat more. She’s choosing her body over her face right now and it shows. I think she’d look younger with little more meat on her bones.

    • Boxy Lady says:

Keri has always been tiny. I think that her baby fat is gone now that she’s older, that’s all. She said in a recent interview that she misses the “juicy butt ” she had when she was younger. As for her marriage, it reaffirms to me that marrying on Valentine’s Day is a horrible idea. It just doesn’t seem to work. (I might just be superstitious though. )

      • P.J. says:

@Shannon and @Boxy Lady: I somehow agree with you both. Yes, Keri has always had that crazy-fit, lithe yet somehow still curvy beautiful dancer’s body (the woman literally was back in her regular jeans the week she gave birth to both of her kids!) but she HAS lost a pretty significant amount of weight in the past year or two. (Marriage stress maybe?) In fact, one if the tabs recently did a story about it and showed a pic of her lifting up/adjusting her shirt from the side and her hip bones and ribs were jutting out in a very serious way :(

Seeing as this is a person who is now in her late thirties, I think we can safely take the term “baby fat” in regard to this weight loss off the table….

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Yeah, Shane is definitely much more attractive than this guy.

  3. yehyeh says:

dont think he is gay, he just played one so well on that tv show brothers and sisters.

remember he was dating sienna miller before she ran off with his friend and co-star on the show balthazar getty.

    • Holly says:

Yes – Somebody else remembers the Sienna/Balthazar scandal!

As soon as I heard this news, all I could think was about how Matthew had so famously stopped speaking to Balthazar on the set of Brothers & Sisters, and how Balthazar was basically written off of the show bc Matthew wouldn’t even film with him. Both situations involve one single person getting involved w/a married co-star with super young kids. Oh Matthew… gonna have to eat some crow…

They do make a hot couple though IMO. Maybe Keri got tired of living such a normal, low-key life and decided to trade up? When The Americans started filming, I think she’d just had a baby a few weeks/months before? – kinda sketchy.

    • Tapioca says:

Thank you – I knew I remembered his name from a past scandalette! He was also in a film called Deathwatch with a load of other young Brit actors a decade ago that was supposed to make them all huge and then…. *crickets*

The only time I liked her was when her brain exploded in Mission Impossible 3.

  4. Esmom says:

I’ve always found him charming but kind of assumed he was gay, admittedly because of his character on Brothers and Sisters. In fact it seems shocking to me that he’d be with a woman. I need to wrap my head around this before I can process it, lol.

I haven’t seen The Americans but my friend loves it so I’ve been meaning to watch.

  5. yehyeh says:

they have such a good chemistry on the show so am not surprised by this and she got a thing for dating her co-stars; remember tony lucca(malibu shores) and scott speedman(Felicity)

  6. annaloo. says:

On a completely unrelated note, I remember being younger than Keri Russell when I first saw her on Felicity. This was true for several popular actresses when I was in high school — how is it all of a sudden these woman are younger than me now?

  7. Pumpkin Pie says:

He gives off a gay vibe, maybe that’s the reason he was cast in a gay role? (I haven’t seen Brothers and sisters). I do watch the Americans and I find him good looking and sexy. Very much so :)

  8. akivasha says:

    Thank you Kaiser!!!!
I love Matthew Rhys and want to see more of him here at Celebitchy.

but for the post at hand…I have no idea but I love The Americans so I would like to see them together in real life as well.

    • Santolina says:

My husband and I tuned in for the first eight or so episodes of The Americans and then found it increasingly difficult to root for the central characters who were spies stealing American secrets and getting more and more violent and despicable, lying to their kids, etc. Does a moral compass ever emerge?

      • akivasha says:

no, it’s TV and we all know how it truly ends

      • mayamae says:

They have a moral compass of sorts. My mom stopped watching after they killed an innocent bystander. I actually find it shockingly easy to root for them which surprises me since their Russian. I think the environment of the Reagan administration makes it easier for me to root for the KGB. They’ve covered the heavy duty brainwashing and spy recruitment that took place in Russia at that time. It’s also interesting that it’s the wife who is absolutely militant in her beliefs, while the husband has become very Americanized and is proud of their American children.

      • Livan says:

I really love The Americans! About the violence inte the show, i think it is a good portrayal of what can happen when you work for a such an organization. Bit I do think they adress, the suffering of the main characters, they are not indifferent to the acts they commit. Keri Russels character definetely belives that what she does is for the greater good.

      • Santolina says:

Thanks for your insights, Akivasha, Mayamae and Livan.

  9. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Balthy is good looking, yes, but not as entertaining as Matt – who was the best of the Brothers and Sisters bunch.

  10. moon says:

He’s straight, used to date Sienna Miller

  11. lucy2 says:

He doesn’t photograph well, he’s more appealing on the show (except for those terrible 80s costumes!). They have a lot of chemistry together on the show, but until there’s more than gasp! 2 coworkers having lunch together, I say wait and see.
I’ve always liked Keri and thought she was so pretty. And I’m jealous of that green dress.

  12. Ruth Dunbar says:

I eagerly await the return of “The Clark”!

  13. Jayna says:

He’s Welsh? Does he have an accent? He was great on Brothers and Sisters.

  14. TG says:

I hope she didn’t get tired of being with a good man who happens to be losing his hair in order to trade up. I guess I know nothing about them together except that Kerri always seemed happy with her non-celeb husband and she even defended him in an interview about his job as a construction worker, if I remember correctly. I think her husband is hot and Matthew Rhys has always looked creepy to me. I don’t know though maybe her husband couldn’t handle it. It takes a special man not to feel emasculated by a woman who makes more than he does. It seems they either come in the K-Fed types (Jessica simpson’s husband, torrid spelling’s man, etc) or they can’t handle it.

  15. Tig says:

Don’t watch the show, and from these pics, him and the phrase “adorable” really don’t go together.

I remembered the Sienna Miller scandal with BG- but had no recollection of this guy being the dumpee in that situation!

  16. Silver says:

Holy sh*t he’s straight?! He is one hell of an actor. He had me believe he was gay all this time (since brothers&sisters anyway)

    • Hannah says:

I lived in New York City for 8 years and being the celebrity junkie I am, I was always on the look for celebrities. I saw Keri Russel at a Starbucks in the West Village and she was super-sweet and gave me an autograph. I was a huge Felicity fan, so I was happy! It was 11 years ago before the Iphone cameras. She was the nicest celebrity I ever ran into in New York or Los Angeles. She also has such beautiful eyes and looks like an angel!

  17. Lydia says:

In that second photo, her unblended makeup looks like an age spot.

  18. Bobbiesue says:

When her publicist announced the split after the home invasion I went around the internet and found this interview “on set” between Matthew and her and I gave a BIG “hmmmm.” He was chiding her and poking fun in a quite intimate way. Then I read the bit he said about being single– much to his mother’s chagrin–and then their ages matching up well. I knew immediately they were together and thought, well they’ll fly under the radar for a while because no one’s really paying attention. I was wrong about that part!

  19. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I don’t know–there isn’t anything other than tabloid bs and two costars who get along (and who are both single now) that I see. Maybe they had an affair, maybe they didn’t. Maybe they had feelings for each other, and that’s why she ended her marriage. Maybe her and her ex had issues for years–maybe the husband ended it months ago, and they just got around to announcing it then. Just because they’re dating (if they are), doesn’t mean they cheated. But we probably won’t really hear anything else about them–unless they do start to date, and then there might be a follow up story.

  20. amilu says:

I never really paid any attention to him until I watched ‘The Scapegoat’ on Netflix recently. Now I have to start watching The Americans. He was really good in dual roles in that movie!

  21. Caz says:

The Americans is really good – agree that their chemistry is obvious …could be true

  22. Ally8 says:

Ew, he’s horrible. His hideous face and manner ruin everything he’s in, e.g. The Edge of Love, which could have been great.

I was excited about Death Comes to Pemberley, until I found out that he (and an unaccountably peaky-looking choice for Elizabeth) were cast in it:

Some actors’ ongoing careers, despite looks or appeal, are a mystery to me.
