Is Chris Evans going to be replaced as Captain America after the 2nd movie?

Chris Evans

Here are the new Empire covers featuring Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson for Captain America 2! I’ve been itching to post these photos and couldn’t find an excuse until now. I guess I should mention Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier over on the left. Comic book aficionados would probably slap me for mentioning that character so casually. To me though, this series is all about Chris and the fidgety, fish-out-of-water character that fits Chris’ own demeanor perfectly. As an actor (and a person), Chris carries the right amount of existential dread to communicate Cap’s conflicted perspectives.

The sequel has headed into late reshoots with two weeks in January on the schedule. Reshoots are pretty typical for big blockbusters these days. It sounds like trouble on the surface to hear about reshoots, but I think the internet news cycle just makes us more aware that they happen. Whereas with a huge project like Ben Hur, no one knew anything about production. The audience just showed up when the movie arrived in theaters.

Nonetheless, people are starting to wonder if there is trouble on the set. Perhaps Chris Evans isn’t so easy to work with as a “whiny little bitch” (his words). Now rumors (and these are only rumors) suggest that Chris’ Cap character is set to be killed off in either Cap 2 or Avengers: Age of Ultron. Maybe this is only publicity to suggest that the Winter Solder will take up the Cap shield. Or maybe Chris Evans is really a goner for Marvel.

This seems like PR work, honestly. I don’t think Marvel would be dumb enough to replace Chris Evans as the face of Captain America. More importantly, I don’t think Marvel is willing to replace Evans as the Cap Ass. God, I hope they keep Chris Evans around for the full Cap run. Not only because he’d have a full meltdown if he lost the job. He’s a really interesting interview, you know? He makes a publicity blitz fun.

If you haven’t seen it already, here’s the trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier featuring lots of Evans booty shots:

I read that in the Daily Mail. Bad idea in my opinion. Gibson is still box office poison and that’s why he hasn’t gotten any work. I can’t stand Gibson for what he did; but Hollywood has shown it would overlook a ton of sins from an actor or actress as long as the box office take of a film is not negatively impacted. RDJ had his own issues; people had to fight for him to get Iron Man and I guess he wants to return the favor (good for him). However, substance abuse is forgiven more easily than racist/sexist remarks, disrespect to the police, and a tawdry cheating/paternity scandal that led to the end of a 25 + – year marriage with 7 kids.

    • Mia4S says:

The source if that story is RadarOnline though. Seriously not worth acknowledging until there is something bigger. They’ve run anonymous internet tips before.

    • Lilacflowers says:

RDJ strongly supports Gibson because Gibson was HIS support system through his rough times. RDJ got Paltrow’s character written into the Avengers when the original plan was that all the “Avengers” characters would be separated from the support characters from their individual franchises. RDJ does have some clout with Marvel, a fact that has caused some friction with the other cast members, not with RDJ, but with the studio.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Ahhhh, so this is how Elsa Patacky is worming her way into the franchise… I thought it might be through Natalie Portman’s character in the Thor movies, but I could totally see her donning the red, white and blue…

      • lex says:

Elsa Patacky will is going to join the franchise???

      • Apple says:

Elsa is not joining the franchise, she just was a stand in for a kiss scene for Thor 2 when Natalie wasn’t available as she was filming elsewhere.

Am I the only person on earth who is sick to death of comic book movies and the hype around Marvel Comics movies in particular?

    • Baskingshark says:

No you are not. Time was when superhero movies were something special. Now it seems like there’s 10 new ones every week. And a TV show. And they’re all CGI, CGI, CGI. Meh. Bored.

    • Evie says:

      Me too.

    • Latisse says:

I counted and there are exactly 11 superhero movies in rotation/ about to be produced right now. ELEVEN!!! Don’t believe me? Feast your eyes:

      -man of steel
      -iron man
      -batman
      -spiderman
      -avengers
      -rise of guardians
      -captain america
      -thor
      -Hercules
      -Fantastic Four
      -X-Men

      YEAH! ELEVEN.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Isn’t there a Batman vs. Superman thing coming out too? Ahh! Too much. I am so over it as well.

      • Latisse says:

God, I hope not. It’s a bubble right? It has to be a bubble. Just like the YA adaptation movies were a bubble proven by the performance of:

        -The Host
        -The Mortal Instruments
        -Beautiful Creatures

Hopefully when divergent doesn’t live up to the hype we can consider that bubble officially popped!

      • Don’t forget Ant-Man (with Paul Rudd), Black Panther (just announced by Marvel) and the rumoured Dr. Strange. Is there really an audience for all of these movies? Of course, I thought that about all the Fast and Furious movies, so I guess I’m wrong.

      • Amy Tennant says:

I don’t think the Batman is a standalone movie, is it? It’s just that Batman/ Superman thing?

I think the bubble is about to pop, probably with Rise of the Guardians which just can’t be good, can it? It’s sad for me, because I’m a huge geek, and I eat all this up. It can’t last forever though.

To answer your question, yep, I’m the audience. Over here. (sheepish wave). I know it’s not for everybody, though. Fair is fair. I’ve had a really good run!

      • Dutch says:

Methinks you are a little confused. What you think “Rise of the Guardians” — which was released in 2012 and about the Easter Bunny and Santa teaming up to fight crime or something — is actually “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

To answer the OP question, there are so many being made because these movies make bank, especially on the international market. The Marvel ones are generating a big stir because so far, Marvel’s have been lauded by both the critics and audiences. DC/Warner Bros. have not fared as well outside the guidance of Christoper Nolan.

I think the Captain America, Spider-Man and X-Men sequels will all do pretty well. The bubble breaker might be “Guardians of the Galaxy,” it’s going to be a big departure from what Marvel has been doing up to now. It’s more along the lines of a sci-fi western than straight up superhero movie. If the public embraces a talking tree and a raccoon in a jumpsuit to the tune of $500 million worldwide, then the bubble isn’t bursting anytime soon. If it bombs, then Marvel/Disney might scale back their ambitions.

    • Spooks says:

I’ve only watched Thor(s) because Loki is hot. and I can’t watch anything with Scarlett in it.

    • Dommy Dearest says:

I’m a comic fan so I’m THRILLED they are making movies. Granted I don’t count anything done by Fox so that takes out X-Men and the Spiderman series. However I do not like the cast of Scarlett or Zoe ‘I’m a true feminist’ Zaldana (That’s her last name right?) for the characters of Widow and Gamora.

I’m personally tired of the zombie and paranormal movies. They blow. You ladies can take your movies, I’ll take these 😀

      • JessicaC says:

Slight correction, Spider-Man is owned by Sony.

      • Dommy Dearest says:

Ah, how did I not cite that. I was on my lunch break and rushing. But it still stands, Sony doesn’t do much better than Fox. I’m just happy Marvel has gotten some of their rights back for some of the characters.

  2. MonicaQ says:

    Comic spoiler alert:

While Captain America *does* die in the comic books and Barnes takes up his shield, it’s only after Marvel Civil War. In that scenario, Thor is dead as well (Iron Man clones him to fight on the Registration side). I doubt they’d kill off *both* Chris-s to satisfy a story line that was well received in the comic book world but not by the general public.

There’s a rumor that in Age of Ultron Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will show up (as a big eff you to Fox and X-Men’s Days Future Past movie) and they were members of the Avengers as well. But that’s a lot of Avengers so one current Avenger is rumored to bite the dust. Joss likes emotionally damaging people anyway (still haven’t forgiven you for Wash in ‘Serenity’, Joss. Still.)

I say off Hawkeye. I like the actor but MAN was he boring.

    • Spooks says:

I am a leaf on the wind, watch me…. You broke my heart Joss!

      • Rachel says:

Why? Whhhyyyy? How am I supposed to work now with that so fresh in my mind?

      • Frenchie says:

Honestly, if I ever met Joss Whedon the first thing I would tell him would be “How *could* you do this? Why did you kill Wash? Why!?”. That wound hasn’t healed yet…

      • Amy Tennant says:

        Waaah!

I understand why he did it. Because we could handle Book dying, but Wash upped the stakes. Once Wash died, we could believe they ALL could die. But it DID NOT MAKE IT OKAY.

    • Jana says:

It’s not a rumor about Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch. Joss has already confirmed it, and they’ve been cast.

  3. The Original Mia says:

Not buying it. The only Chris I worry about disappearing from the Marvel landscape is Hemsworth. Evans embodies everything that makes Captain America appealing. Winter Soldier isn’t the all-American boy anymore.

    • marie says:

he himself said he was signed on to 9 movies kind of deal

      • American Hustle says:

“Winter Soldier isn’t the all-American boy anymore. ”

The Winter Soldier isn’t Chris Evans’s character, though.

      • Lilacflowers says:

No, Evans only signed onto six movies. Marvel wanted nine but he only agreed to six, which has been the standard. Marvel went out and got relative unknowns: Evans; Hemsworth; Hiddleston; Renner (he signed his Marvel contract before he broke in other films); even Clark Gregg, and signed them to long-term, multi-movie deals at rather low rates. The contracts provide for sequels like Thor 2 and Capt America 2 based upon whether financial triggers are met with the originals – if Thor 2 had flopped, there would be no Thor 3. None of them are happy about it with Hemsworth and Evans being the most vocal. The actors figured out that they could burn off the contracts by doing small things (the pay rate isn’t going to be much different), including small bits or voice parts in Disney DVDs or those cameo appearances or end-title bits in the Marvel films – hence (SPOILER) Captain America’s appearance in Thor and Hiddleston doing Muppets and Tinkerbell. It’s easier to negotiate a pay raise when you only have one film left on the contract and the studio needs you because of market demand. And in the actual comics, all the characters die all the time. Just look at the Thor films – the Destroyer actually kills Thor but he is revived by mjolnir because he sacrificed himself to save Jane and the town. Loki falls into an abyss and is presumed dead. Both are alive and well, okay, one is mentally deranged but alive, in the Avengers. After Winter Soldier, Evans is only contractually bound for two more films, one of which is Age of Ultron.

    • The Original Mia says:

American Hustle, I know Winter Soldier isn’t Evans. It’s Bucky and Bucky isn’t the all-American boy anymore, which is what Captain America represents.

  4. lenje says:

This may be a little off topic, but Captain America is my nephew’s favorite hero. He lives in a country 24 hr flight from here, and I had to send him a Captain America mask since his mom couldn’t find any there (Captain America is way less popular there than Spiderman, Batman, and the Flash). Based on his mom’s constant streaming of cellphone pictures, he’s been wearing it religiously 🙂

  5. QQ says:

Meh! He kinda is pretty to look at but in action he gives you both cold oatmeal and Cardboard, and in interviews is like ALL THE NEUROSES so I don’t see why not…

    • I Choose Me says:

I don’t find him that great as a dramatic actor but he’s really funny in lighter/comedy fare. He was the best thing about The Losers and who could forget Not Another Teen Movie. Dude is imminently watchable when he doesn’t have to be all serious and or broody.

  6. Tiffany27 says:

I thought Cap was going to die in The Avengers sequel? At least that’s the rumor I read.

    • lex says:

I heard Hawkeye was going to die in the sequel. All i know is somewhere and I can’t remember where at all….but there was an interview with Joss Whedon and he hinted that somebody will be killed off.
Even if Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t work, I don’t think it’ll discourage Marvel much. Hulk movie hasn’t worked a couple of times and neither did Fantastic Four, but Marvel is still making bank on these other characters. I don’t know…personally I like them, of course I really liked comic books as a kid even though I didn’t need to read every single one, I did follow it.

So I say Marvel keep’em coming! You go Glenn Coco! 😛

      • ellid says:

Uh, no, Whedon said explicitly in Entertainment Weekly last summer that he was under orders from Marvel NOT to kill off any of the Avengers. And Robert Downey Jr.’s post-credits scene in the 2008 Incredible Hulk didn’t count against his contract, so I very much doubt Evans appearing as Cap for 24 seconds in Thor 2 is any different.

        This rumor is ridiculous.

  7. Hello Kitty says:

Off-topic but I hate ScarJo’s hair in the trailers. It’s too perfectly coifed. Does the Black Widow spend an extra 15 minutes each morning with a hair dryer and an extra large round hairbrush?

  8. Diana says:

Good God! that is a world class @ss!

    • MonicaQ says:

I saw every straight woman and gay man in the theater do the head lower like, “This is relevant to my interests.” as soon as he showed up. There’s a tumblr dedicated just to Cap’s tooshie. It’s kinda amazing.

    • Amy Tennant says:

      Indeed.

And Chris Evans converted me wholeheartedly into a Captain America fangirl. Not just for DAT ASS, but also for his portrayal. They better not put Assmerica on ice.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Seen it in person. His entire back is a work of art.

      • Diana says:

You lucky biotch! I noticed his fine assets on avengers, but was kind of distracted by Robert Downey Jr, to be honest. I’ll try to pay more attention.

      • Lilacflowers says:

He sat in front of me at a Celtics game. I couldn’t concentrate on the game at all. Watch the scene in Avengers when he is arguing with Tony Stark and Bruce Banner in the lab. His back (and ass) is displayed beautifully.

      • Ivy says:

        Lucky!

  9. Marty says:

Didn’t he already lock in his deal though? I doubt Marvel would miss out on making money from a third film.

  10. American Hustle says:

I read somewhere that Sebastian Stan is signed on for 6 movies with Marvel. I don’t know for the others, though.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Six films is the standard Marvel contract but they can use them in cameos and closing credit scenes and that eats up the contract.

  11. Kris says:

I would have liked to see Jensen Ackles as Captain America anyway. Evans has always been too bland. Not enough pretty.

    • Katie says:

Jensen would have been great. I never understood why Chris Evans was cast as Captain America when he was already the Human Torch in Fantastic 4. I really liked him as the Human Torch too.

    • MrsBPitt says:

I always thought Paul Walker would have been a great Captain America…so sad…

    • locheed says:

I wonder if we could petition for Jensen Ackles to be the next Cap? There would be a fangirl meltdown at my house…

  12. MrsBPitt says:

The ONLY Marvel character that couldn’t be replaced or gotten rid of is Iron Man…I really don’t think anyone would care about the other “heros”….

    • jaye says:

      I would.

    • Shantal says:

Actually, I care more about the other characters than Iron Man. In fact, I find Iron Man incredibly annoying and wouldn’t care if he were killed off.

    • Katie says:

Hugh Jackman is Wolverine, I don’t think anyone can replace him in that role.

    • Dommy Dearest says:

Oh Iron Man can be replaced easily. However due to his recoginition he won’t be. They don’t think if they introduced new characters in an movie without much prior intro for them that the audience won’t be able to comprehend them.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Eventually, these guys will age out of the parts. Like Roger Moore as Bond, some, such as RDJ, may be kept on too long, but others will be replaced.

  13. Britt says:

That large of a budget and they couldn’t afford a better wig for Scarlett?

  14. PixieWitch says:

JEEZUS, I am so sick of superhero movies….even the trailers…….BORING!

  15. T. Fanty Fan says:

How can Sebastian Stan look so hot there and so not in real life? Sigh…

  16. Maureen says:

Honestly, I find him incredibly boring and lacking in charisma. He has no “big screen presence” that should be the mark of an actor doing an iconic superhero. I literally fell asleep during the very first Captain America movie, which I saw in the theatre. To this day I have NO IDEA how the movie ends because I don’t even have the inclination to rent it and finish it.

  17. Pose83 says:

Didn’t Evan have the be persuaded to take on this franchise as he didn’t want to be working on the same character for so long or was that Hemsworth?

    • Maureen says:

As if either one of them have much of a career to speak of otherwise. LOL, these movies have bolstered their careers and provided them with more income than all the other stuff they’ve done combined.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Marvel wanted Evans for nine films but he would only agree to six, which is Marvel’s standard deal. Contractually, “film” includes even a minute cameo like he did in Thor.

  18. Dommy Dearest says:

I will say that Bucky is an important figure to Captain America as a whole of the character.

  19. Bread and Circuses says:

There have been repeated blind items about a franchise star who is getting too deep into cocaine abuse that fans have consistently guessed was Chris Evans.

Hopefully, if his character is being killed off, that’s not why.

    • PrairieGirl says:

Given the strong resemblance between Chris and his brother Scott – who was involved in a drug bust – I’ve been assuming that that the blind item tipsters were confusing the two. In any event, I hope both brothers are drug free (or at least, drug seldom).

  20. Tig says:

I am a big Marvel fan, but even I am getting burned out. It’s just way too much CGI, and The Avengers just felt like explosions, 10 min of dialogue, more explosions, repeat. Admittedly, the overseas market is driving much of this, so don’t see the formula changing anytime soon.

  21. Marianne says:

I doubt its true. Chris has never had a problem with Marvel. Besides, he has a contract. Whether or not his *SPOILER* cameo in Thor 2 counts, he has 1-2 more films to do after Avengers 2.

  22. Amy Tennant says:

Oops excuse me.. I did confuse the guardians movie titles above. I was referring to guardians of the galaxy. I actually called rise of the guardians “legend of the guardians” the whole time it was in the theater. I’m having one of my spells

  23. FALSE ADVERTISING! I saw only two booty shots–wtf?

  24. Twez says:

No! He’s got the best ass in the Avengers!

  25. David Wiltfong says:

Of course he is gonna be replaced. It is ground work to get people talking and let people think the “actor” is being replaced. It is the progression of the movies matching the comics. Chris Evans/Steve Rogers will be replaced as “Captain America” by Winter Soldier. The previews show Captain America showing his face, wearing the Super-Soldier/SHIELD Commander costume, and Fury talking about the public knowing him for who he truly is… he will just play as “Steve Rogers” from now on and not “Captain America.”

  26. project1x says:

I hope he stays. I like Chris Evans as ‘Cap. Never liked Captain America as a character until Chris Evans played him, and even thought the first film was easily one of the worse Marvel films to date, I think Chris Evan’s performance was the highlight and the only enjoyable thing about that film.
