BBC execs thought Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t sexy enough to play Sherlock

wenn3860989

It’s difficult to remember a time when Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t a thing. Back in the days before he was Sherlock, he was “that actor who played the child-molesting rapist in Atonement.” He was working relatively consistently in film, TV and on the stage, but Sherlock catapulted him into “household name” territory. So it’s no surprise that given his lack of stardom, the BBC wasn’t pleased with the idea of Benedict playing Sherlock. Sherlock showrunner and writer Steven Moffat said – in recent public remarks – that the BBC even declared Benedict to be unsexy. *shakes fist at the BBC*

Benedict Cumberbatch and David Tennant can hardly cough nowadays without sending their ardent army of female fans into a frenzy, so it’s hard to imagine a time when anyone deemed them “not sexy enough”.

But according to Sherlock and Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, that’s exactly what the BBC were concerned about when first casting Arthur Conan Doyle’s super sleuth and Tennant in his breakthrough in Casanova. Speaking yesterday at the Hay Festival, Moffat revealed that the Beeb had initial reservations over both leading men:

“They said of casting David Tennant as Casanova, ‘Damn, you should have cast someone sexier’. With Benedict Cumberbatch, we were told the same thing. ‘You promised us a sexy Sherlock, not him.'”

Both Cumberbatch and Tennant have gone on to set many female hearts a-flutter, with Tennant enjoying enormous success as the tenth Doctor and in Broadchurch, while Cumberbatch’s fans even have their own nickname, the Cumberbitches (although Cumberbatch himself prefers “Cumberpeople”). The Sherlock actor made the leap to major movie star in 2013, appearing in Star Trek Into Darkness, 12 Years a Slave and August: Osage County, although Moffat went on to acknowledge the drawbacks of his global success…”It can be quite annoying too if you’re scheduling a damn show.”

[From Radio Times]

Well, at least the BBC allowed Moffat his choice for Sherlock. And from what I’ve heard from Moffat and Mark Gatiss in the past, Benedict really was their first and only choice. They thought he would be the perfect younger, modern Sherlock… and he is. As for the sexiness… well, as soon as they unleashed the Cumbercurls, many of us were done. But I think Sherlock/Benedict really came into his sexiness in the second season, with A Scandal in Belgravia. Something about Sherlock and Irene Adler… God, that was hot.

    He still isn’t a household name…

    • 'p'enny says:

he is in the UK! if people in the UK havn’t heard of him it’s because they haven’t progressed from Jeremy Kyle and Eastenders.

      • Hiddles forever says:

He is the only modern British actor my hubby can recognise…. apart from Tom Hiddleston, but that is my fault lol

  2. MissMary says:

I always laugh at how fans swoon over the curls but Benedict hates his hair done curly for Sherlock and calls it “too feminine”.

    • flavia_deluce says:

I LOVE the Sherlock hair but I think that his current, everyday, kinda-curl and his current color is the look for him. I rewatched some S3 Sherlock recently and I can see why he hates it. It looks like a lot to deal with.

  3. Lindy79 says:

I love his Khan era hair and bulk in that first picture and the one sitting with Moffat.

Not shocking, he’s not conventionally sexy and a lot of folks find him really odd looking but hey-ho. Hopefully we’ll get some good shots from the Hay Festival this weekend.

Can they get to bloody writing Sherlock instead of talking about it?

    • Sighs says:

This is the only thing I’ve ever seen him in where I thought he was honestly sexy. Slightly bulkier with hair in his face. He needs some hair on his forehead to balance his face out. He’s grown on me more since then, but that was still his best look.

    • Isadora says:

I totally agree with the Khan hair & body. I like him as an actor, not as a man, but he looks good with it!

  4. GeeMoney says:

Read this story a long time ago…

I’m glad that Moffat got his way and got to choose Benedict to be Sherlock. He’s so great on the show. Love him!

    • Audrey says:

I choked a little when I got to, “You promised us a sexy Sherlock”

      • GeeMoney says:

LOL… being sexy is subjective, though. Perhaps Gatiss and Moffat found him sexy in a intellectual way.

  5. Allie says:

Am I the only person in this world that is not attracted to him in the least? I want to understand but I don’t! Bring me some Fassy!

    • Miss M says:

No, you are not the only one. The execs were right, he is not sexy. But He is a great Sherlock.

    • Anne tommy says:

Benny is decent actor but not my cup of earl grey ( bet he’s devastated…), while references are made to him looking like an otter, he reminds me of a vicuña , a relative of llamas. That’s not insulting by the way. Fine actor again but something cold about Fassbender. I’m only here to hiddle…

    • Ice says:

I’m not a cumberb*tch either…I don’t get it and he is not hot in the least to me. Neither is Tom Hiddles but they’re both wonderful actors.

    • Ms.Virago says:

Nope. You are not alone. We are out here.

    • carnival says:

I was into Fassy too until I saw X-Men. I just can’t get over his jazz hands stance in that movie

      • Isadorauf says:

Ah.. he so made up for any jazz hands in the scenes with the banker and in Villa Gesell. So badass. I’m in love.

      • Intro Outro says:

Every time Fassy made jazz hands and McAvoy held two fingers to his temple I had to suppress a snort – but hey, it’s cinema and I understand that each of them must have his own characteristic gesture that would turn on a huge flashing sign in the minds of the youngest audience: WARNING! MAGIC-DOING BEGINS IN 3.. 2.. 1.. 😀

      • Lindy79 says:

I was the same (saw it last night) especially after their round of interviews after the first film where they giggled like kids at James deciding what way to “finger himself and his brain” and Michael doing Jazz hands with a bit of constipation.

    • balehead2012 says:

No, you’re not the only one. I don’t find Cumberbatch, Hiddlestone or Fassbender sexy, they’re not my cup of tea at all (*scurries away in fear*), but I like and respect them all as actors. I’ve watched a few films with each and they are really good. But I have to admit, I click on these post because like to read all these funny and interesting comments about them, not because I’m interested in what the article has to say about them 🙂

  6. Duri says:

How many times are this husband and wife going to repeat this story ???

I mean I have already heard this story like 5-6 times from either Sue or Moffat’s mouth, we get it you guys and the BBC execs didn’t find him sexy…..now build a bridge and get over it!!!!!

    • Green Girl says:

They really do dine out on this story, don’t they?

      • Duri says:

GG —-Exactly like always that’s all they say regarding Benedict….we didn’t think he was sexy type, BBC didn’t think he was sexy either, his name was too weird for everyone when we announced him for Sherlock…..like honesty how many times are you gonna bring this shit up ??(and kinda mock Benedict indirectly )

Both seem to be very interested in any kind of attention they can get from the media.

      • blended says:

i think they mean it as a braggy thing. like ‘we gave him a chance when they told us not to, and we were vindicated’. unfortunately the cumby haters will have a field day with this.

    • Vesta says:

I agree this story is already told too many times. What I would like to know next is what they thought about MARTIN FREEMAN’s hotness???? 😉
I could listen to Freeman’s tangy jokes forever.

  7. LadyMTL says:

Erm, if you don’t watch Sherlock then chances are you don’t know who Cumberbatch is…sorry to say. He’s famous on sites like this, yes, but I know a lot of people who would just give you a blank stare (for example, my brother knows him because of Star Trek and that’s it; I doubt he even knows Cumberbatch as anyone other than Khan).

Hopefully Cumby will get a few more big movie roles and then he really *will* be famous and all the Cumberfans will have lots of pics to purr over.

  8. Green Girl says:

So weird to think that if the BBC really put their foot down, we likely wouldn’t have had “Sherlock.” I wonder if Moffat and Gatiss would have left the project completely if they couldn’t have Cumby. (Sorry, I like these “Sliding Doors”-type stories!)

  9. Amy Tennant says:

    *heartflutter at Tennant mention*

    • Okie says:

I thought I was the only one!! David Tennant is numbers 1-5 on “My Five” list!!

      • kri says:

Love David Tennant as well as Cumby. They are both very talented which I find sexy and they aren’t cookie-cutter which is even sexier to me. I saw Tennant in Broadchurch. He was amazing as was the whole cast. That series gutted me. “Sherlock” is a revelation and a joy to watch.

    • Heat says:

      Oh me too!!!! {le sigh}
We need some solid David Tennant posts on here!!!

      • 'p'enny says:

        count me in

      • Lilacflowers says:

Another vote in favor of more Tennant posts!

And can I get a motion for more McAvoy too?

      • Nighty says:

More of all the other actors.. Hugh Jackman etc….So many hot wonderful actors out there…..
oh and less Kardashians and shenanigans,,,, those are boring to death…
I can’t handle any more Clooney and GF fiancée.. or I’ll go looney….

      • Lilacflowers says:

Looney Clooney or a Clooney looney?

      • Intro Outro says:

Yes! YES to what Nighty says! Every time admins think of a Kardashian post, they should stop themselves and think: Why don’t we do a Tennant/McAvoy/Fassy/Hiddles post instead and make this world a better place?

      • Nighty says:

        Looney tired of Clooney..

      • Lindy79 says:

Clooney used to be so anti paps but am I wrong or since this engagement has that changed a bit?
        I mean the not-at-all staged engagement shots…

      • boredsuburbanhousewife says:

Could not agree more with all of you–please less khartrahian/Clooney and how about more talk about some newer fresh faces? Especially the hot swoonworthy guys in period costume like Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow) and Colin O’Donaghue (once Upon a Time). I would love a discussion on this board with all the erudite ladies on the topic “Why does a man in a badass long coat & guy liner look so damn sexy?”

      • pixie-stix says:

Tennant and McAvoy posts? I’m there.

      • Nighty says:

Yes, yes yes Colin O’Donaghue (Captain Hook) .. He could “hook” me up anytime….

Tom Mison too… oh God… YES, PLEEEEEEAAAAASSSSSSEEEEEEE!!!!!!

  10. A.Key says:

    Rehashed old news really.
Why can’t we get a rehashed old news article on Tommy so we don’t have to keep hijacking Benny’s threads?
But top marks for the first photo, damn he looks good there.

    • Nighty says:

Oh @A.Key just threadbomb Ben’s posts… nobody will be upset.. I won’t, definitely. It’s even easier, get to talk about both delicious guys in just one thread, it’s one less window opened . 🙂

    • jammypants says:

Ben looks great with a tiny bit of hair falling on his forehead, whether curled or straightened.

  11. Mel M says:

Right on Kaiser. That was my favorite episode!

  12. Melymori says:

And he is not….he looks like an albino lizard and I better run and hide :p

    • Duri says:

      Meh try hard next time

    • Nighty says:

Melmori no need to hide… you’re entitled to your opinion… 🙂

      • Eve says:

I agree (that Melymori is entitlend to her opinion).

CB is an open forum, and even though Kaiser is crazy about him, that doesn’t make the site his fan club.

One of the things that drove me away from the Cumby threads was the fact that he suddenly became above criticism of any kind.

But here goes a very unflattering opinion from a former cumberbitch: I’ve grown tired of seeing him attending every single event (that has little to do with acting) he can and, in my opinion, that reeks of desperation and cheapness (I firmly believe the man is a cheapskate and loves a freebie/goodie bag).

You know what? Maureen, who I didn’t like at first, was f*cking right.

      • Duri says:

Actually from the few threads I have seen as I am new here, he gets lots of criticism for being a famewhore, only hanging out with posh people, looks like an alien etc.

So I don’t know what you are talking about, but you can come back to the threads and criticize him like everyone else does.

Also my comment above was to tell the poster and others who dislike him for his looks to come up with more interesting digs as this alien thing is been there done that.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Eve•

I don’t agree but it’s sad that both TH & BC threads people get so sanctimonious that neither will tolerate any criticism. Or they go to the other extreme and think the worse. Not fun.

So how have you been? Anything new and exciting for you?

      • Eve says:

        @ LadyS:

No…super bored and depressed. I’m going to take some time from the internet again, I think. It’s pointless to come over here to “escape” like the CB caption says and end up being MEGA bitchy.

I come here to have fun (and practice my English). If I feel like I’m failing at both, that’s when I know I have to take some time off.

        *waves*

        @ Duri:

Indeed you’re new here. Maureen was perhaps the first poster who dared crticize Cumberbatch for his famewhorish behaviour and she got A LOT of flak for doing so. Back then, I thought she was overreacting and decided not to engage…I didn’t reply to her. Right now…I’ve realized she was right.

As for the lizzard/alien remarks…well, I think he looks like a lizzard and someone from another world — but that’s what made me attracted to him in the first place (not anymore, I’m not — but not because of that). I used to think he was a mix of a feline and a reptile and that was fine by me.

I understand some may use that as an insult, but there is a plethora of celebrities who I think look like animals and I, for one, don’t mean that in a bad way.

      • GeeMoney says:

        @Eve

I don’t think Cumberbatch is necessarily cheap… but I do think he’s frugal, and I think there is a difference between the two.

I think he’s very meticulous about where and what he spends his money on. I’ve read a few articles about places that he likes to visit and things that he likes to buy… I have a feeling he spends his money on certain things (like vacations), but on other things (possibly clothes… I think he buys nice clothes but just wears the same ones all of the time) he may try and go a bit of the frugal route and buys them when he has to.

And about the fact that he’s at a bunch of events all of the time… perhaps he just needs something to do when he’s not working. He’s not in a relationship (I’m pretty sure he’s not) and just needs to keep himself busy between projects. We all know how much of a work horse he is.

Anyhoo… just my two cents. Everyone is heavy on the criticism, but I think he’s just doing his thing (working a lot/getting free stuff/whatever) until he really finds someone. I have a feeling that when he meets the right woman and settles down, we’ll hardly see him out and about at all.

      • Eve says:

        *lizard.

      • Marty says:

For what it’s worth, Eve, I think your English is fantastic!

      • jammypants says:

I always think absence makes the heart grow fonder. Benny is never absent, even when he is absent. He’s always…there. Walking, wearing clothes, socialising, doing errands, putting napkins on his face. The cameras might as well follow him 24/7. I know the Kardashians love that kind of stuff, but I like Ben as an ACTOR and prefer to see him in the make believe and not in real time. Real Ben is just like anyone else, except with more money. How boring.

      • Green Girl says:

@Eve – I wish Maureen would come back to these threads. Wasn’t she a big fan of his, too?

Now, I know that a month ago I was advocating that Cumby get out there and do anything, even if it’s appearing at a high profile event. But now he’s showing up to places seemingly just to show up and get his name out there, and it’s tiring. Surely he’s built up enough of a reputation that he can decline to attend select events and just hang out at home or go on vacation?

      • Lindy79 says:

        Aww Hi Eve xxx

Only thing I don’t like people saying about his looks is the inbred thing. It’s not cool.

He’s an alien Lizard cat otter and that’s just fine.

I also agree he’s not and probably never will be a massive movie star in terms of box office blockbusters and being able to carry a movie but I think if he keeps working he’ll have a great career. 2014 has been a bit unfortunate but thats an actors life so he’s doing other stuff to keep busy and see the world. I can’t fault him for that and bar here and twitter etc these things he’s done don’t get much coverage.
Hes best when working so looking forward to him getting back into it

      • Katie says:

The short version is that I don’t think he’s so big or great that he’s above PR.

Long version: to me, a famewhore is generally someone whose aim is to get famous sans talent. Or they shove off work for PR, ie dashing off the set to do PR even if it’s for another project when they’ve already met their obligation. Fame is first, work is second and it suffers for it. That is not the case here yet.

The competition is more fierce now than ever. You’re competing with people across multiple industries, talent is not enough. PR has become a way to ensure your name is out there and stays out there if you’re not cemented, as lack of public awareness makes networks and studios leery. He was still running into that back in 2013, I’m sure it’s still an issue and costs him bigger/more substantial parts.

With BC, it depends on his goals. Is he trying to work in both the US and UK? I’d say yes, probably because the UK industry is great but tiny and limited in scope. And if they tire of him, he’d be screwed without a backup.

Most people in the US still don’t know who he is. He’s not ‘everywhere’ at all–I wouldn’t know about anything other than the Oscars if I didn’t come here, same for the gen public and casual fans. But what he’s done can help keep his name floating around the web a bit in lieu of new work coming out, especially since he’s going to essentially ‘disappear’ for months at a time in 2015.

      • Roberta says:

Eve, I’m of the same view with the TommyAnne threads, it does annoy me that no even constructive criticism can be made, let alone the snark we gave last yr when he was going to TOE (the opening of an envelope). And what bothers me is I think his PR is more suspect than Batchs (taking his publicist on a charity trip anyone, pap pics).

But given their status actors at a certain level have to keep their profile up when they’re not doing filming/promo and that appears is what BC is doing (but then he has a clued up pr).

      • CoffeeCat says:

        @GeeMoney
“And about the fact that he’s at a bunch of events all of the time… perhaps he just needs something to do when he’s not working. ”

That’s what I find utterly disturbing in the first place. I mean, Cumby keeps complaining about how hard the fame is and how he wants to disappear – that may lead you to believe that when an opportunity to fall off the radar knocks at his door, he would grab it with both hands. And what do we see? He has a year off (well, almost) and he’s partying/networking harder than ever! Why on Earth for, may I ask? Either the guy really is a famewhore or he’s struggling with some personal problems and needs all distractions he can get…

      • GeeMoney says:

        @CoffeeCat

I think that fame is a double edged sword… you are damned if you promote yourself/your movie/whatever too much, and you are damned if you don’t promote yourself at all. On one hand, I think that there are so many perks to being famous (free stuff, people are nicer to you, you make tons of money, etc.) and then there are so many downsides (stalking, lack of privacy, people criticizing everything you do, etc). I like to think that most celebrities don’t care for the crazy fame (and the tireless promotion) that comes with being an actor or musician, but I think that they go along with it b/c it’s a huge part of the job, and there is no way around it. You have to stay on Hollywood’s radar nowadays to work, and hopping to different events like Cumby does and getting photographed here and there is a good way to do that (Hiddleston does this/did this as well, and the flack he got for doing this during his promotion of Thor: The Dark World was ridiculous). He might secretly hate all of the attention and wish for privacy, but he knows that he needs the exposure in order to keep his name out there.

Maybe he’s getting offered free room and board for the weekend if he shows his face at an event, or maybe he’s there networking for his next movie, or maybe they are paying him an appearance fee… who knows? I like to think that its work related. Cumby gets exposure, and so does the product (or person or whatever) at the event. Everyone involved benefits from that. And who would turn down a hotel stay in Monaco? Or Zurich? Or Australia? Especially if it’s for free, and all you have to do is show up?!?!?!? I know I wouldn’t.

PS – Like I said earlier, I think if he was settled with a wife and kids, you’d see less of him. But since he’s single? He’s out and about. Probably looking for a gf, too (come to Washington, DC, Cumby…).

      • Miss Scarlet says:

        What’s up Eve?!

I agree with you, Cumby has always enjoyed a bit of name dropping and swag. He’s afraid of disappearing during slow work periods, as well. He takes what I call ‘gig-cations’, where he’s not acting, but does some kind of event-related commentary/charity/etc, I think so that he doesn’t fall entirely off the radar.

One thing I have noticed is that he has ramped up his connection to the Royals big time in the past year. I think he likes the cache it gives him, as much as he wants to put himself across as a normal guy. From past interviews, it’s pretty clear he’s a Royalist, and can’t seem to shake the ‘posh’ label; now he’s starting to own it.

That does make Lady Balfour good girlfriend material, I’m afraid.

      • Sighs says:

This is probably extremely snarky of me.. But.. I almost feel like its a he’s popular enough to sit at the cool table now, so he’s going to, with relish. I get the feeling he wasn’t the richest/smartest/best looking one at school (not that he isn’t any/all of these things, but I’m sure it’s fairly competitive where he went). Now he sort of is, and is enjoying being the popular one. Sadly, I think sometimes in a very puppy dog way, and I wonder if some people end up using him because of it.
Wow. I feel like I need a psych class.
(I could totally be wrong on all of this. He may just be a dickish, elitist snob or overwhelmed by fame or the nicest little butterfly in the world). Just an observation.

      • Sixer says:

        @ my little Evelet

I’m also bored with the Hiddlesburp/Benbomber threads. They’ve both just become plastic to me. I can’t even be arsed to moan about it any more! I do keep saying we need a new man – preferably a nice virgin-to-CB-obsessions-and-also-hot one.

      • Janeite says:

The daily Cumberbatch threads and the way they derail into Hiddleston threads plus the increase in the dissing of other gossip sites is dismaying to me. Maybe it’s happening because there is no real news about either of these men. I don’t know. But I find it nicer to comment and contribute after a break when Cumby/Hiddles threads aren’t so frequent.

      • CoffeeCat says:

Oh dear. That’s not just your feeling (or anyone else’s for that matter), that’s basically a proven fact! All that bragging, all those cringe-worthy lines like “punching above my weight with women”, “it’s good to be me” and the like. He’s essentially broadcasting to the world the message that he’s now crème de la crème, as it were. I believe that’s what they call inferiority complex, or whatever the term is. Understandable, if only pathetic.

Granted, he’s now famous, successful etc etc but what the man seems to forget is that he owes his fame/success to a lucky chance called Sherlock and if it hadn’t been for the series, he would have remained nobody for the rest of his life. Yeah, he’s very talented and he’s been working hard for the 15 (or so) pre-Sherlock years… and that lead him nowhere. Absolutely nowhere.

What I’m trying to say… he is a lottery winner, kind of. And a smart lottery winner would not go around boasting about how lucky he is and how good it is to be him, he would shut the f*ck up and enjoy spending the money…

*mutters* Apparently, I’m in a b*tchy mood today. Oh well. Cannot be helped. 🙂

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Eve, your “lizzard” comment made me instantly think of Eddie Izzard, which always makes me smile, and I would never have guessed that you were not a native English speaker.

      • Nighty says:

though I really like him I have to agree that this sudden fame has made him probably “change”… He probably had it difficult to get attention when he was a teenager but now that he’s rich… Nevertheless, I do believe some people might actually take some advantage of him and his found-fame to escalate up the ladder of fame too.. Let’s hope he starts smarting up (especially after that episode in Ibiza…)
But I think this type of change may actually be common and normal; it’s easy for us to say we’d do this or that, or that we wouldn’t for that matter, but the truth is that we’ll never know….
I believe it’s difficult to handle such changes in one’s life and it takes time to adapt…
        Whatever.. I’m digressing already..

      • CoffeeCat says:

        @Nighty
Oh but he has changed and definitely not for the best. The first picture makes me miss that smile from the early Sherlock days – sweet, sincere and shy. 🙁 And look at his smile now: cynical, artificial and conceited…

Re: how forums and posters change over time: for a couple of years I was one of admins of a big (16,000+ members) music comm, and I absolutely loved watching how discussions evolved. There’d always be some oldbies, and usually every 4-6 months we’d have a wave of newbies. In between, some people would come, others would leave, of course. It was very interesting to see how the tone and themes changed with new people joining us. For example, we’d have a new guy who’s very well-versed in music, is outspoken and loves cussing – and the convos would slowly but surely become harsher. Or one of admins who repeatedly used her (quite extensive) knowledge of the industry to put down less experienced posters would leave – and convos would slowly grow more animated, with people being more eager to express their opinion without fear of being ridiculed..

Um, and I kinda forgot why I started writing all this in the first place lol, but my point is that it’s natural that convos change and that there are people who like the change and people who don’t. And you never know what happens next but it’s exciting to watch 🙂

      • Delorb says:

Both men seem to be above reproach by some fans. I made the mistake of critiquing Benedict’s Late Night performance and Hiddlestones not taking advantage of being in like three Marvel movies (THREE!). You’d think we were a bunch of 12 year old girls based on the fan reaction. Jeez.

Then there is the fact that some people are NEVER satisfied. When Benedict was working on all those movies, people fretted that he was working too much (and psychoanalyzing his every move and found him lacking, natch). Now that he’s taking time off before starting his next movie….people are fretting that he has TOO much free time and has resorted to fame whoring.

And don’t get me started on Hiddlestone taking Benedict’s place in that movie. That meant that he was taking Benedict’s scraps, of course.

I still haven’t figured out how a cheap guy can be the answer to a BI about a guy spending $15k on hookers. But that’s for another discussion.

      • Lindy79 says:

I’ve no problems with him doing the PR thing, so long as he owns it.

I can’t be arsed going back but with a lot of interviews, they are rehashed over and over so he’s said stuff about privacy and the press in the past but I have no idea when he’s said it (I do still agree that taking photos of someone when they’re not aware is creepy so he has me on that one). If he says now, that he hates the press and blahs on about his privacy I will be side eyeing the hell out of him. Even the carry on with the napkin was annoying. He was at the Met Gala, NY was swarming with paps, if he doesn’t like it, don’t go to these events, and as I said before his napkin antics gave them better shots. I do 100% believe that a part of him loves it, again, nothing wrong with it but don’t moan about it.

Same with the posh label thing. *IF* he is dating Kinvara, then he needs to stop whinging about being labeled as posh. You can’t date someone called Lady Kinvara Balbour, go to Royal functions and then go “whhhyyyy do people think I’m soo posh?!”

I’d like to see some 100% new interviews with him but more so I’d like to see the Thornfield, DUC and HiddleBunny posts back 🙁

      • 'P'enny says:

@delorb, the reason the Hiddles fanbase didn’t like your comments about him “not capatlising on his three marvel movies,” on IMDB was because you were very dismissive of his fans comments pointing out to you the films, theatre and TV productions, and not too mention the three leading film roles he lost due to funding issues.

Hiddles has recently said in an interview that he is now looking forward to the next couple of years, free of Marvel as it had taken up six months of each year, for each film.

He has squeezed in three years, where there is a space some good brilliant projects, that nearly brought him to point of exhaustion in 2012. And, you were also showed a lack of recognition to the type of work that Hiddles is attracted too, in your opinion on IMDB he should have been a leading man in Hollywood movies over acting in Hollow Crown or Coriolanus.

You also had unbelievable false expectations above what is likely to be reasonable opportunities for a new british actor, in his early 30’s, in a very competitive british acting scene and an Indy film market, where Hiddles is likely to find his niche, is struggling.

If you want to flame that point here, you’re going to get in trouble again. his fans were far from being 12yr olds, they were highlighting your short-sightedness.

        @ CoffeeCat

“Oh but he has changed and definitely not for the best. The first picture makes me miss that smile from the early Sherlock days – sweet, sincere and shy. 🙁 And look at his smile now: cynical, artificial and conceited…”

I have never noticed a cynical, artificial and conceited smile. Can you point out some examples of the way his smiles have changed for the worse?

      • Intro Outro says:

        @’P’enny:

It’s weird how somehow the fact that Hiddles has had that little time since Thor never really registered with me. But now that I think of it.. Wow. IIRC, Thor was released in April 2011 and they immediately started shooting Avengers which probably took another 5 months to make. And TDW took up autumn and probably half of winter of 2012. Plus extensive reshoots in summer 2013. Plus promo tours for all 3 films.

        What can I say?

        http://25.media.tumblr.com/5f5f192e652bc4fe8f8fd4fd606566a9/tumblr_mz02n3Zg851to4723o7_500.gif

      • jammypants says:

        Oh wow, flame wars!

The scraps comment is so silly. Ben also takes scraps (Khan from del Toro and Billy Bulger from Guy Pearce). Let’s not act like he’s better than other actors and above taking leftover kitten food from actors of higher calibre than him. To me, I find the “holy trinity” interchangeable (Fassbender, Hiddleston, and Cumberbatch). Fassbender is still far ahead of the game than the other two.

I’m sure you were excited when he had the role in Crimson Peak he WALKED away from. If his fans should be angry, be angry at his decision, instead of taking childish swipes at the actor who was asked personally by the director to take the vacated role. But we already know you have it in for Hiddly boy, delorb, don’t you? 😉

      • 'p'enny says:

        @intro

        why thank you 🙂

Hiddles was on call for Avengers for principal photography, April 2011 to end of August 2011, he was last of major cast to finish filming in Cleveland, according to his D23 interview. Where he laughed and said, i’ve got to go back to work, theyve all finished. That isn’t including the weeks he spent with Joss Whedon pre-production, basically relaunching Loki.

He started prep for Hollow Crown, Henry V soon after, and spent a lot of time promoting War Horse while filming Hollow Crown.

I think in 2012, he had about a three month gap between finishing Hollow Crown and OLLA, where he spent a good time enjoying Avengers marketing tour. He started Thor2 the weekend he finished OLLA. And, it’s since come out how much time Tom spent with Tilda and Jim in preproduction of OLLA. He put a lot of effort into that film.

It’s no wonder he wasn’t in a rush beg 2013 to film new projects, he wrapped Thor2 in Jan 2013. Did his charity thing, and then things went pearshaped with Capa. Back in Marvel-land before Coriolanus, and well the rest is history. LOL

      • Intro Outro says:

It’s actually interesting to see how the younger actors who shot to fame due to Thor/Avengers fared overall. CHemboy is probably the closest of all to having a Hollywood-y career with him starring in films like Snow White, Red Dawn and Rush. I am not sure but it seems Cyber and In the Heart of the Sea are sort of in the same vein. And I think the way his career is unfolding fits his abilities.

      • delorb says:

        @jammypants,

That comment about scrapes was in reference to some fans saying he was taking Benedict’s scraps. Not ME saying it. It was an example used to show how some fans react.

And If I have it IN for Hiddlestone, then I also have it IN for Benedict as I’ve not always been okay with some of the things he’s done. Things I’m not shy about posting on any forum, using the same name.

        @Penny,

The reason the fanbase got upset with my OPINION is the same reason fans always get upset. I wasn’t toeing the company line with regards to Tom and they took offense. It goes back to what I said above, some fans think their favorite is perfect.

As for my comments about Hiddlestones career, it stands. I also included in my statement on IMDB (which some fans skipped over, natch), is that IF it were Benedict, I would say the same thing. I don’t have any sacred cows.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, and he filmed Exhibition on the weekends while filming Thor2. Did more Thor2 in the summer of 2013 when they added Whedon’s new parts and Muppets and (although I know you want to forget it exists but Angelica Huston is in it too) The Pirate Fairy and at some point did three short films: Out of Time, Friend Request Pending (although he’s in that for one minute; it’s mostly Dame Judi Dench), and Out of Darkness. He’s been busy.

    • 'p'enny says:

why do people think it’s ok to throw barbs on the internet when you wouldn’t do it to their face?

      • T.fanty says:

I think you underestimate the brass set that our darling Miss Eve possesses. She wouldn’t stand to the side and ask half-assed, passive-aggressive questions, either.

      • Lilacflowers says:

A very good question, ‘p’enny, for which I have no answer. And some of the barbs have become quite vulgar.

      • T.Fanty says:

Oh absolutely. We’re all just so very vulgar. Thank god Cumberbatch spews flowers and kittens whenever he speaks. My God, he’s a f*cking Disney Prince. If only we could all aspire to his perfection.

*skips off to draw a picture of a bunny*

      • Isadorauf says:

I don’t think people really take umbrage at funny, intelligent barbs. But sometimes people just come here and comment that he looks “inbred” or something (like Lindy said) and that’s rather awful. And it has nothing to do with being a flower and kitten spewing Disney Prince (hey, Tommy would be jealous, that’s his trademark!)

      • Nighty says:

        * laughing imagining Ben spewing flowers and kittens while Tom’s sitting at a corner
whining about Ben stealing his action*

THIS, this type of comments are what I love about CB….

        @T.Fanty… I adore you…

      • Lilacflowers says:

T.Fanty, I would never consider you vulgar; you’re just too funny and creative.

      • 'P'enny says:

I love snarky comments, but it’s the aggressive and unimaginative name calling I find irritating. The constant attack on Benny’s looks, i.e ‘albino lizard’

      • Lindy79 says:

He also farts unicorns riding rainbows and a cherub playing the harp follows him wherever he goes.

    • Duri says:

@Eve I still don’t think he is a famewhore by going to these events, like Geemoney said he seems like a guy who can’t sit idle. If he is not working, he likes to travel and do all sorts of stuff, sadly though since he is publicly known we get an overdose of his activity which is not his fault entirely. Especially if you come to sites like these you’ll think it’s an overdose but to normal people who visit sites like say Eonline or just jared then this won’t be much because they don’t cover every single thing he does.

Maureen person can have their opinion of thinking he is a famewhore as I also find some celebs famewhore which others might not. As for comparing his looks to aliens then yes I would say his face is very unique but I would not call anyone alien, it just sound more negative than positive no matter what your intention was.

As for comparing with Animals then yes I compare many actors to them as well but lovingly like you do. I mean just the sound of alien sounds worse than an animal IMO

      • GeeMoney says:

        @Duri

Hee hee… thanks for agreeing with me. Like you said, he’s only covered to death on this site (not that I’m complaining). Michael K doesn’t really give a crap about him, and neither does Lainey Gossip and other blog threads so much. I think the posters here have a warped view of how “overexposed” he really is, b/c I can tell you, in the U.S., most people don’t know who he is (perhaps he is overexposed in England, but since I don’t live there, I couldn’t tell you what’s going on).

It’s a shame that he’s not a bigger deal in the U.S. though, b/c I think he’s so wonderfully talented.

PS – I think he’s handsome as well. Most people think I’m crazy for thinking that, but I don’t care. I love his little Otter face… 🙂

      • 'P'enny says:

        @Duri

I agree he is an actor that can’t sit still, but he has also set up a business and released a successful short film he could be doing more film development work with his partners. You can’t do that off a yacht in Monaco. Instead, he is building his PR side for his main acting job. It is famewhoring, and he is no different than other actor by doing so. But, if wanted to do something below the radar he could be working on his production company.

      • Delorb says:

“You can’t do that off a yacht in Monaco.”

Um, yeah you can. There’s a way to communicate with the outside world while on a yacht or in any of the places he’s been recently.

The places he’s been in his downtime have been too obscure to constitute fame-whoring. You’d have to be a fan of racing or gardening to even see him opening that proverbial envelope.

Being seen is not the same as fame-whoring. Someone who doesn’t Tweet or have a Facebook page, can’t be accused of fame-whoring. IMO, of course.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Delorb:

Can’t really agree with you about Twitter or FB making a celebrity a famewh*re. Imo both FB and Twitter are a way to connect with fans, true, but they do not get a celebrity nearly the same coverage as TV or other mass-media. I would say that attending various events that get covered on TV/in newspapers/Internet publications is much more fame-wh*rish than tweeting or posting something on FB.

I also think that the unwillingness of many celebs to have a Twitter/FB account stems rather from their dislike of this kind of communication medium than from their not being fame-wh*res.

      • Froop says:

I wouldn’t call the Chelsea Flower Show or the F1 races ‘obscure events’. It’s not like they get much press is it…

Just because he doesn’t have a FB page/Twitter doesn’t mean he can’t be a famewhore. He just uses a different method, i.e. PR and appearances.

      • jammypants says:

It’s weird how he doesn’t have social media accounts, yet he goes through other people *cough* Rhodes *cough*, which is the same, if not worse, since some of these people feel like friends by association. They seem to love the attention they get by being his friends.

      • delorb says:

        @Intro and Froop,

I think it makes a big difference. Especially when you see actual fame whores like Justin Bieber and Rihanna, Tweeting and sending selfies of their bowel movements. If he had such an account, that would be one thing, but he quickly closed down his FB page, when people got wind of it. That’s not what a fame whore would do. They’d keep the page up and post pictures with headlines that can easily be taken out of context. Not calling any names, but she knows who she is.

And while those things (flower show and F1 race) are big in their respective countries, you’d be hard pressed to find the average American who even knows that they exist. Now if he’d done the same thing at the Indy 500….

As far as posting through James Rhodes, I think that’s more on James’ part than Benedict. He was on recently complaining about Benedict not inviting somewhere. I mean, really, dude?

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Delorb:

We’ll have to agree to disagree on this subject, I am afraid, because I still think that using or not using FB/Twitter is primarily down to a celeb’s willingness/unwillingness to communicate with fans in the kind of manner FB and Twitter presuppose.

    • Katie says:

      @LadySlippers,

Same, I was just commenting the other day that there’s no middle ground with those two anymore. Either blind adoration or character assassination.

      • Nighty says:

Do you really think so? Because I see there are people doing both (adoring and criticizing)… (me for instance)… Love them but criticize them a lot too…
I do miss the dialogues from @LadyS, SecretSquirrel, etc on the horrors of putting milk before tea, the fashion line of Hiddles shirts…
I do notice the posts are becoming less funny and more serious… miss the idiocy (in the good way) of the comments posted when I started reading this site about 8 months ago….
        🙁

      • Katie says:

Yes, Nighty, I’ve seen some stuff that’s a little over the line. It’s not the easiest thing to explain, more like you cringe when you see it, if that makes sense.

There’s still legitimate criticism and loads of it, which is fine by me, but I’m seeing more harsher posts as well.

    • GeeMoney says:

      @Sighs

He’s smarter than you think 🙂

      • Sighs says:

Oh I wasn’t implying that he was wasn’t! I believe he’s loaded with smarts. I’m just thinking more in a competitive, private school-boy way. I was merely thinking out loud. It sounded better in my head.

I think everyone at that level of schooling is rich/smart/good looking (with aid, of course). Have you ever noticed how rich people good looking is different than every day people good looking? Like they try really, really hard… Lots of professional hair/make-up, designer clothes, etc. But if you take it all off they look kind of meh?

I’m really fantastically snarky today. I just need to quit talking.

      • GeeMoney says:

        @Sighs

Nah, it’s cool… I’ve read that he’s a bit naive, but I think it just came from him being new to fame (back in 2010) and trying to figure how to navigate his new found success. I think he’s the type of person who is very caring and giving and likes to help people around him that he cares about be successful (even if it’s using his fame to do it), and that may make people think he’s a bit gullible. They may have been right in the beginning (talking about she who must not be named, lol), but I think he’s got it under control now.

Be snarky all you want! Snarkiness is cool. And it means you have a sense of humor.

And yes… without all of that makeup/money/personal trainers… all of the rich and famous look just like everyone else. It’s funny how a little bit of money can change a whole lot.

PS – Oh, and yes… I went from being a maligned, smart and dorky person in high school to hanging out with a popular crowd in college (I hung out with some sporty types)… I think he probably feels like he’s finally in on some level, but the funny thing about reaching “popular” kid status is that you realize that you aren’t and were never missing anything. That’s how I felt. And the funny thing is in the long run, you really just end up finding your way back to the same type of people you ran with back in the day b/c honestly, they are the only people who truly get you.

I love my nerdy marching band friends 🙂

      • Sighs says:

Although being with the “in” crowd in Hollywood involves a great many more perks. I imagine it can be difficult to deprive yourself when people keep throwing gifts and such at you just for the sake of maintaining balance in your life.

Hopefully he can come full circle and really focus on acting, as he truly is quite talented. He has that chameleon quality that most actors nowadays just don’t have.

    • Katie says:

CoffeeCat , GeeMoney kind of hit the mark re fame as a necessary evil. He’d not be getting roles on talent alone because there’s loads of actors just as talented and more conventional looking than him.

I don’t think he can just ‘disappear’ anyway, he started getting pap’d and fan sneak shots right after Sherlock aired. Might as well get something out of it. (Can still earn the ‘famewhore’ label from me if his works suffers, though)

      • CoffeeCat says:

        @Katie
Yes, fame IS a necessary evil, I’m not going to argue that! The point I’m trying to make, he’s attending too many events IMO. As if he’s trying not to miss any party, any con, any show or gala.

And it’s not hard to disappear, if only for a while, when you come to think of it. 🙂 For someone who is (or should I say used to be?) into outdoor activities, there are mountains to climb and exotic countries to explore. Those days are long gone, it seems. Partying, partying and partying again…

      • Delorb says:

But why should he disappear? Why should he turn down an invitation to the Met Gala? Beyonce, Jay-Z and Solange didn’t turn down their invitations (although they probably wish they had). I would also ask why he should turn down free stuff, but he wears the same clothes almost everyday, so I’m thinking he’s not getting a ton of swag. If I didn’t come here or IMDB, I wouldn’t have any idea what he was up to. And I’m a huge fan.

      • Katie says:

Sorry so late, just saw your reply, CoffeeCat! (it’s getting messy in here LOL).

It’s…confusing to explain but I’ll try, bear with me. It looks like he’s mixing PR (business) with pleasure and cramming in it before he gets tied up. Essentially, workaholic traits. He’s been doing PR for years and some events he’s even done in years prior–Letters Live, Park Theater, the flower show–but couldn’t last year because of filming.

        Some of this stuff is high profile, but TBH a lot isn’t. He just turned down A+ swag and a load of mainstream press at BAFTAS to go to a local theatre fundraiser. Had other, better con offers but passed. Basically, he’s either got the world’s most bizarre plan for fame or is just doing what he feels like {barring the two events that were definitely work-related.}

I do see your point as well, and you can definitely be right, just imo he should be aiming a lot higher if that’s the case.

  13. flavia_deluce says:

His hair in that top photo looks great and is a peek at what his Time cover could have been–I hate the cover photo they went with.

  14. Abby_J says:

I go back and forth on my Cumberlove. He has me for a while, then I see an awful picture of him, and I am like, “ehhhh……” I do appreciate him as Sherlock, although if I am being honest, Johnnie Lee Miller had me at hello.

Now David Tennant….Whole different story. I adore him. He was amazing as The Doctor (soooooo much better than Matt Smith, flame away Smith fangirls!) and I pretty much love him in everything he has ever been in. Of course, he isn’t as dreamy as Peter Davidson’s Doctor, but then again, it is hard to compete with all of that handsome. I mean, that guy made wearing celery look so hot. I imagine at family gatherings, Davidson and Tennant just sit around and talk about how incredible they both were as the Doctor. Okay, probably not.

    • Amy Tennant says:

I think #5 was definitely the cutest until #10 came along!

    • 'p'enny says:

Tennant and Smith are, like Cumby and Hiddles to me, Tennant and Hiddles wins my love, laughter and snogging fantasies. But, Cumby and Smith are charismatic and run a close second, because they have a harder edge and not quite as funny. Yes, i think that’s it, Tennant and Hiddles have brilliant smiles and laughter lines and big puppy eyes.

      • Abby_J says:

I can see that, but I just can’t get into Matt Smith. His Doctor got so tiresome, I was beyond happy when they announced that he was leaving. In fairness to him, part of my dislike comes from my total dislike of Amy Pond and her whole storyline. I felt like the show became way more about her than The Doctor, and that was annoying.

I admit that I am totally excited about Peter Capaldi. In the Loop and In the Thick of It are amazing. I can’t wait for the Three Musketeers to air here in America, with Doctor Who following shortly after. It’s a Capaldi summer!

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, I divide them the same way but slightly different outcome. The first pair for reasons similar to those you give, although I think there is a slight edge to Tom (the bad boy pants in the bad boy drawer; managing to call Jeremy Clarkson a perfect a$$ to his face in his own voice without him realizing he had just been insulted for making a crack against Eton). The other pair, I find to be interesting actors and I’ll watch them but that’s as far as it goes – no attraction to either.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Abby_J, to make it a perfect Capaldi summer, I’ll have to watch Local Hero several times.

    • Anne tommy says:

Amen to Jonny as Sherlock. Also in elementary, great turn by Rhys Ifans as mycroft Holmes, Rhys an excellent example of a man who in no way conforms to the dreamboat conveyor belt but who I find strangely attractive – or is it attractively strange?

      • jammypants says:

Rhys was sexy as hell as Edward de Vere.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Love Elementary, love jonny as Sherlock and Lucy as Watson and Natalie as Moriarty (awesome!) and have always loved Aidan Quinn. I think Rhys Ifans is fun as Mycroft but I find him strange, no attraction.

      • Abby_J says:

I fully expected to LOVE JLM as Sherlock, because I’ve had a celebrity crush on him since the Emma mini-series, but I was also fully prepared to HATE HATE HATE Lucy Liu as Watson. I mean really, Sherlock Holmes and his BFF being a GIRL? Ugh. Happily, I’ve been quite surprised at how good she has been and how much I’ve enjoyed it. I have been relieved that so far there is no romance between them, which is what I feared the most. I actually believe that they care for each other as friends, and not more. I really like it.

That said, as Billy Crystal’s character says in When Harry Met Sally, “men and women can’t be friends because the sex part always gets in the way. ” I hope that doesn’t hold true, and they can keep them as just friends.

      • Isadorauf says:

@Anne tommy & jammypants: Ah… Rhys Ifans. Can’t help but really like him. And he’s got such a wonderful voice and charming Welsh accent. He could read the phone book to me and I would love it. And yes, I did enjoy his Edward de Vere, it was good to see another side of his range because after Notting Hill he got a bit typecast as the goofy guy (maybe also due to his looks).

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Abby-J, I love the relationship between JLM’s Sherlock and Lucy’s Watson. It is presented as a true platonic friendship, very rare in television but not so rare in real life, although many pretend that it is. I particularly enjoyed the episode when it was revealed she had a lifelong obsession with the mafia and it shocked him.

      • jammypants says:

@Isadorauf, he’s a wonderful dramatic actor. I hope we see more of that in the near future.

  15. John says:

They were right inasmuch as (I don’t think) he’s sexy– he looks like something out of the waxworks– but Sherlock Holmes’ appeal came from his intellect. Stop deciding what the masses should find attractive and just cast talented actors in the roles, Hollywood’s main problem is putting pretty faces in parts that need people who know their craft; some are knockouts, most are regular people whose ability and charisma make them sexy.

    • Sarah says:

      Well said, John.

    • LadySlippers says:

      Agreed.

Hollywood is *over* preoccupied with looks. And now films look nothing like real life OR have people that can act.

      • Sighs says:

        This^
This is why I tend to watch more british tv than American. At least there are more average looking people with some modicum of talent. (I’m not talking about Eastenders and Big Brother, etc obviously) No offense to all those who like those, though!

      • The Other Katherine says:

Yes, British TV is full of actors who look like normal people rather than Barbie and Ken dolls. There are plenty of sexy people on British TV, but their sex appeal usually doesn’t rely exclusively on conventional prettiness. You don’t get the H’wood phenomenon of the “plain” or “weird-looking” sidekick / best friend / comic relief character being played by someone who is genuinely very good-looking (albeit not stunningly beautiful) but dressed and made-up to look as dorky as possible.

      • Sighs says:

That is one of my biggest pet peeves. The “ugly” girl who is really just a beautiful girl with glasses on. *rolls eyes*

      • boredsuburbanhousewife says:

I love watching good tv from European countries that feature real looking actors without too much makeup, false eyelashes especially. A current fave is Spiral, the French crime drama. Very interesting mostly natural faces, though Gregory Fitoussi needs no enhancement to be unbelievably handsome. Yum!

  16. Camil says:

    Wait… There was another thread about this… am I wrong? o.0 .

  17. RobN says:

I don’t think he’s nearly as big a thing as people here would have you believe.

    • original kay says:

yeah. I don’t think he’s as big a thing anywhere, not like this site suggests.

    • Janeite says:

While I think he’s still far from being a household name, he’s not exactly an unknown either.

I like the guy but I’m getting to be a bit Cumberbatched out by the sheer number of threads about him on here recently.

    • allheavens says:

      Yes RobN,

The Time international cover, the GQ cover, the Vogue cover, The Hollywood Reporter cover, the Entertainment Weekly cover, the Esquire cover, the Empire cover, the Emmy nominations, the BAFTA noms, the Olivier Award, and the Britannia Award were all a plot by the media to make us believe he was actually a talented, sought after actor.

      • RobN says:

I didn’t say he wasn’t the current darling of the media, I didn’t say that he wasn’t talented; I said that he wasn’t the hugely popular, I can open a movie on my name alone, sex symbol that he is presented as on this site. I think if you asked 100 people on the street in the U.S. who he was, you’d probably get a dozen who could pick him out of a line-up and that is going to be 3 or 4 BBC fans and some Trek fans. And yes, I get that the U.S. isn’t the whole world, but film makers are a lot more interested in U.S. numbers than they are in British numbers when it comes to English language entertainment.

  18. linlin says:

Most if not all of those BBC execs were straight males, right?

    • Sighs says:

Ha. There are quite a few not straight males. Trust me….

      • 'p'enny says:

yeah, but Cumby doesn’t as far as a i can tell have a gay following, despite Datalounge’s efforts.

      • Roberta says:

And I bet these execs are the same ones who don’t want to put a woman over 35 on UK TV, and pulled Arlene Phillips off Strictly because she was too old, but keep old men like Dimbleby and Melvyn Bragg broadcasting in a blatant sexist and ageist double-standard? Because mainly old men make decisions esp at the BBC, and don’t have a clue what over 50% of their viewers – ie women – want to watch.

Rant over (sorry about the UK only references).

      • Sighs says:

Actually datalounge doesn’t think he’s gay, for the most part. He’s not pretty enough for them. But pretty much any hot guy is gay to them. And all women are deluded “fraus”. That place scares me.

      • Sighs says:

I do think some BBC execs get sucked into the testosterone vortex. Partly it’s just getting funding through the production companies for good ideas, though. Getting the better ideas off the ground and funded so the BBC can yay or ney them. Funding is a *itch.

      • Nighty says:

Oh @Sighs, so in their opinion (Datalounge), who’s not so handsome is straight???
We straight girls are doomed, have to find some frog for me, since all prince charmings are gay….
        *cries in despair…*

      • Sighs says:

Yes, nighty, that’s pretty much how it works over there. Hot=gay not hot=straight
Maybe a frog prince for you? It’s a very fine line, isn’t it?

      • Nighty says:

@Sighs yeap the idea of a frog prince does look charming
        ;D

*ok, this is quite a twist of words…. *

      • Sighs says:

        It’s a dance…. La la la

      • Isadorauf says:

Funnily enough I think the only hot guy that escaped the DL gay claim is Fassy. And I say it’s funny because he’s obviously great together with McAvoy which should heat the DL fantasies up (it certainly did so on tumblr), but still.. I guess he has such a womanizing reputation that it’s even too much for them lol.

      • Nighty says:

Really @Isadorauf… well, then there’s one hot guy for us… that isn’t gay according to Datalounge… lol

*wonder if it’s open war here on CB for the only hot guy DL doesn’t consider gay??*

Just kidding… We’ll have to wrestle for him with other gossip sites… Hooray!! Lol…
Oh God, I think this insomnia is making me cray cray.. 😀

      • Sighs says:

Wrestling? I’ll bring the jello! I think we could take the other sites… We all seem to have expertly sharpened claws today.

  19. JenniferJustice says:

“…Execs thought he wasn’t sexy enough to play Sherlock Holmes…”

He wasn’t and he isn’t. I’m sure he’s probably a very nice guy and maybe that explains his massive fanbase, but he is one homely dude and all the great acting and kindness in the world doesn’t change that. I don’t get the huge following of women who think he’s hot, but to each their own.

    • 'p'enny says:

Homely? as in fireside and slippers? curl up on your lap and purr, and be comfortable? no, he is harder-edged than that. Homely? god, never. Although he is no Tom Hardy, he isn’t soft-as muck Martin Freeman.

    • A.Key says:

LOL, the obligatory “I don’t understand your taste my female counterpart, so you must be defective” comment on every Cumberbatch thread, my god.

And Martin Freeman’s great, back off ‘p’enny 🙂

      • 'p'enny says:

@a.key mmm “you must be defective?” I am not quite sure my comment referred to Jenniferjustice POV ‘as defective.’ A term i would describe a fault computer, not a person’s POV.

Homely has two meanings, one as i inferred, and the other as being not good looking. Either don’t suit Benny.

And, i really like Martin Freeman and it wasn’t a criticism.

      • A.Key says:

‘p’enny the first paragraph in my comment was meant for JenniferJustice, sorry about the confusion

  20. original kay says:

    he’s not.

    • Boredwithimdb says:

In your opinion. In mine he is – especially with the Sherlock hair. To each their own.

  21. Miss Jupitero says:

I don’t think he is sexy, but he is *perfect* as Sherlock. Who the hell got the idea that Sherlock is supposed to be sexy?

    In other news:

THEY ARE FILMING BLACK MASS RIGHT OUTSIDE MY GALLERY.

I am going to have to put in serious studio time once I know the film schedule, obviously!

The lot next door was used for a gruesome scene in Mystic River, btw.

    • 'p'enny says:

photos! or i don’t believe it, LOL

    • Green Girl says:

      I am so jealous!!!!!!

Speaking of Black Mass, I have a question for you all. When did they decide to pick Cumby for the role? Was this a few weeks in the works, or was he only notified a week or so ago? I have no idea how these things work, and I am just curious.

      • MissMary says:

He apparently mentioned it when he was at that Guardian editor meeting and it was one of the reasons there was a media blackout on anything he and the director he was with (the one directing him in Hamlet and I can’t be buggered to look up her name right now since I’m typing from my phone and yada yada yada) so he’s known about the role/been signed on for it for some time, or was at least in the works for it while the Guy pearce thing went down (whatever that was).

      • Froop says:

Edit – Missmary beat me to it!
He apparently talked about it during an off the record talk at the Guardian newspaper, and mentioned it was his next project but asked the details not be disclosed anywhere. So he knew it was happening quite a while before it was announced, but I can’t remember when the meeting was.

I wonder why it took so long for Guy’s absence to be reported on since waiting until filming had started is pretty late to announce someone is being replaced, especially when Cumby was supposedly already signed on.

      • Green Girl says:

Thank you both! It’s very intriguing.

      • MissMary says:

I was wondering that myself, esp given how long ago he apparently knew about it, and was certain enough to refer to it as “his next project.” I wonder if the delay in announcing it was due to making sure any legalities in Pearce’s contract were satisified so he couldn’t sue (which happens sometimes) or if it was because there was some doubt Benny would be able to do it after all since he had a pretty packed schedule back when the Guardian meeting happened, before some films fell through/were moved.

    • A.Key says:

OMG, I adore that film!! You lucky scott!!
And yes, Sherlock is not supposed to be sexy, where did that idea come from?! It’s like saying someone’s not sexy enough to play Poirot – err, helloo?
He’s supposed to be incredibly smart (that’s where the attraction comes from – honestly, why do women get put down on because they like a man for his smarts, despite his looks??) and irritating. And he is both. Case closed.

      • Nighty says:

@A.Key agreed, the smart ones not so good-looking also need some love and attention… And I find him and Hiddles attractive…
Why do the attractive men have to look all like hollywood “commands/ orders/ specifies” … I believe the Hollywood type is too pretty, as if they were dolls instead of men…
We’ve always objectified women and there’s definitely a problem with actresses who are extremely talented but not pretty enough to play parts, according to Hollywood standards, and we are starting to witness the same with men…
Our society is totally lost.,… People value, more and more, external beauty over the rest, it’s becoming more and more futile, vain, focused on what is actually not important…. The looks…

A Brazilian actress once said: Beauty is only important in the first 15 minutes; after that you have to have something more to offer…
        She’s so right…

      • Isadorauf says:

I totally agree that Sherlock Holmes is not supposed to be sexy. In fact Sidney Paget, the illustrator for the stories when they were published in the Strand Magazine back in the day, took his brother Walter as model for his drawings of Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle criticised that Holmes turned out to be too handsome in these illustrations.

And while I think that Holmes (like Walter in photographs) looks rather striking in the illustrations – and as this was the first Holmes I’ve ever seen it will always be the “real” Holmes for me – he definitely wasn’t movie star pretty by today’s standards in those.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Oh, enjoy! It’s so exciting to watch those things, even if they’re just standing around for hours. Given all the filming that they’re doing in Cambridge/Somerville, I’m wondering if they’re staying at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square. The film had budget problems so I’m not sure they would be able to afford putting the whole cast/crew up in the Four Seasons/Ritz/Taj/Mandarin/Copley Plaza but would be more inclined to the next tier like the Parker House/Lenox/Park Plaza. Or if they’re down in one of the newer hotels in the “Seaport District,” formerly known as Southie. The Globe reported that some of the cast was at Boston Calling but they couldn’t tell if Depp was there

      • Lilacflowers says:

And in other Boston movie news: Chiwetel Ejiofor is coming! Chiwetel Ejiofor is coming! He’s bringing Gwyneth with him but Chiwetel Ejiofor is coming!

      • Delorb says:

Maybe Goop will determine Boston is too ‘real’ for her tastes and she’ll film on a sound-stage in LA?

    • pru says:

I’m guessing that when the BBC was considering a modern day, younger Sherlock they thought he should be sexy to appeal to a younger audience. A cerebral character like Sherlock couldn’t be sold to a young audience without it, because you know, young people wouldn’t watch a show about a brilliant intellect solving crimes unless he was had, at least, sex appeal.

  22. Miss Jupitero says:

Because somebody has to do it:

    Tom Hiddleston!

So any news? Or is he is complete blackout in Tahiti?

    • Nighty says:

      No news…

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Tut. I think Tom is over.

      • Lucretia says:

@Miss Jupitero — “I think Tom is over.”

        Not sure what you mean . . . ? Curious . . .

      • 'p'enny says:

@Miss Jupitero. Gosh, Tom is sooooooo yesterday. :-p

Next celeb crush please….mmmm whose the next fashion-dorky male actor for us all to crush over???? Matt Smith or Eddy Redymane?

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Miss Jupitero, yes, he is so over, so everybody else please just leave him to me.

        @’p’enny, Eddy Redmayne, please!

      • Camil says:

        @Lilacflowers

Sorry, but I need Tommy in my life every day.

I agree with you about Eddy Redmayne, (despite I hated Les Miserables) I’m curious about “Theory of Everything” and his next project “The Danish Girl” 🙂

      • Nighty says:

Not so over @Lilac.. not for me…

*looks at Lilac thinking, honey, you still have competition*

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @Nighty, I can share.

      • Abby_J says:

Ummm….I want in on that competition Lilacflowers and Nighty. He and I would have a marvelous time running together.

      • Nighty says:

        Ok.. we can share… 😉

      • Isadorauf says:

I think it’s a bit crowded around Tom? Oh well, I’ll go with Fassy then… And I don’t share him. 😛 (But he will probably share himself, the naughty boy lol)

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Abby J, no competition, the three of us can share. Have a good run. @Isadorauf, I won’t challenge you over that one. He’s all yours. But please do let him out to work periodically; I do enjoy his acting skills.

      • Abby_J says:

Excellent! I’ll bring Jonny Lee Miller to entertain me when Tom isn’t available.

      • M.A.F. says:

Maybe you girls will get your wish on having more Redmayne in the coming months. He is in the Jupiter Ascending movie (which I keep forgetting he is in).

      • Nighty says:

@Isadorauf how come your smiley has a red tongue and mine doesn’t? It’s white….
        I want one like yours…
        see mine’s like this 😀

        *let’s inspect elements.. so yours is with a p mine with a D *
        let’s try it 😛

        *Got it.. *

      • Lilacflowers says:

@MAF, yes, I saw the trailer for Jupiter Ascending last week, although he looks like his face is covered in shellac, which might be worth seeing for that comic visual alone.

@Camil, we are sharing! It’s just that the number included in the sharing is dwindling so more time for those of us still sharing.

@Abby_J, and we’ll share that one too.

      • A.Key says:

Funnily enough, I had a crush on Eddie Redmayne way before I discovered Hiddleston.
Now there’s another Tom on my radar, and his last name is Mison. Unfortunately, he’s also awol.
Well off to rewatch X-Men then…

      • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, A.Key, Mison is quite yummy.

      • Abby_J says:

        @Lilacflowers

Sharing Hiddles and JLM seems like a fair deal. Glad we can all be so agreeable. Makes for less bloodshed. ;P

    • MissMary says:

Tom generally doesn’t get a lot of random papping unless it’s surrounding filming. There’s the occasional fan pic (like that one of him and BC leaving a cafe around Christmas one year) but almost all his fan pics or pap pics are when he’s on location somewhere, even ones where he’s just out jogging like in Toronto.

      • Ellen says:

What you mean the staged pap photos of Tom in Toronto? I can’t see Benny doing that. Benny’s character always comes across well in fan photos and pap pictures. I can’t really comment on Tom’s proper pap photos because they’re rare. Not because he keeps himself to himself but because out of his fandom he’s not really that important or known 🙁
I’m glad Benny is doing well because he’s deserves it and has worked hard for it.

      • 'p'enny says:

The pap photos of Hiddles was not of him jogging in Toronto, he had a bubble jacket on and trousers walking from a spa, apparently according to Lainey gossip he had his nails and feet done. Two girls had a sefie with him while he was jogging and that was on a different day. The photographer who snapped him, in Toronto, also did the photos on set of Crimson Peak, the two sets that were heart-stoppingly brilliant. The photographer has a twitter feed and he sold the pics to JustJared, and others, and tweeted the Crimson Peak fan-sites. Benny has done plenty of staged pap photos, Oscar photo-bombing was pure attention-seeking. And, it was no coincidence that in New York he was papped with Dakota Johnson, knowing now they are going to star together in a film, announced two weeks later. That, was a perfect set-up for american press.

I agree that Tom’s pap photos are rare, because he doesn’t look anything like Loki in real life and no one recognises him, outside of his major role. LOL. And, he knows he is lucky that way, and that he can lead a double life. But a lot of chameleon actors are like that, some actors are really popular and still are never recognised as they walk down the street. I could walk past Robert De Niro and not know him.

      • MissMary says:

@Ellen oooooh yeah those pap pics in Toronto were kind of sad… There’s some from fans who were at “base camp” or whatever and got pics with him at the end of the day or between scenes but most of the ones out of Toronto were very…stagey.

I love Hiddles’ acting but I agree–outside his immediate fandom, he’s not much of a pap target.

      • Duri says:

@Penny nope you can think whatever about the oscar photobomb photo but the one with dakota was not scheduled by him or even Dakota. It was a day after MET Ball, all the paps knew which main hotels the actors were staying at, they probably followed either of them. Dakota was papped the next day as well while staying in NYC.

I can say this with confidence because Sarah Paulson whom I have never seen encouraging pap pics was also clicked the next day at NYC. She never called paps before and I won’t believe she did it this time. She also attended the MET and like Dakota and Benedict she got papped next day as well. So you give him benefit of doubt there.

      • Lilacflowers says:

The “staged” photos in Toronto were taken on a Thursday, the day after Charlie Hunnam also was papped. By the beginning of the following week, GDT switched hotels for the cast. So, not so sure they were staged as opposed to the photographer figuring out which hotel they were all at. A week later, they started the outdoors filming so not so much of a need to track down the new hotel.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, dearest, please continue to think whatever you want to think in whichever way you want to think it and continue to doubt whatever you want to doubt and question whatever you want to question and love and adore whatever you want to love and adore in your delightfully zany way. The board wouldn’t be as much fun if you didn’t.

Also, would love to have been the person to take care of those beautiful hands. The feet? Not so much. Runners do not have attractive feet and he has the long toes of a sloth.

      • Duri says:

looks like someone is still sulking over last thread’s comment

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Duri, hmm, would you be referring to your extremely vulgar comment about my cancer-afflicted breasts? No, I wouldn’t be the one sulking, you gave no cause for me to sulk but you did give a rather interesting view of yourself. I’m so grateful and happy to be alive that sulking is just not my style. Have a lovely evening.

      • Nighty says:

@Lilac dear, i’ve never seen his feet… wow.. gues if they’re like those of a sloth (the toes) they won’t be pretty… where can I find pics? lol

        Kisses…

      • Isadora says:

Nighty, I think you can see a bit of his feet in Only Lovers Left Alive (also in the trailer) as Adam is playing guitar barefoot. And there is also a bit of naked feet action in Unrelated. And no, I’m not trying to be a female Quentin Tarantino lol, but someone mentioned his ugly feet somewhere and therefore I started to look. I don’t find them ugly, they are just like his hands long limbed (is that even a proper expression? can one say that? ) and slender. However I never paid much attention to feet in general as long as they are clean and well-kept.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Nighty, OLLA and the Thor2 deleted clips of Loki screaming. Very long toes, some of which are slightly crooked, again, runner’s feet. But everyone has to have a feature that is less than perfect and if it is just the feet, who cares, so long as clean and well-kept, as Isadora says. But those hands, the man has exquisite hands.

      • Nighty says:

sounds like my feet.. gymnastics and basketball… 😛

      • Ellen says:

I have a sneaky feeling that Tom might like the idea of being papped. Why else always wear the same clothes and the horrid blue cap that needs burning?

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Ellen:

Erm… But don’t people actually dress up when they think they’ll get papped? o_O Or do you think that Tommy is afraid that unless he puts on that cap and that black Armani sweater, he won’t be recognisable? 😉

      • 'P'enny says:

        @duri

I am not going to give Benny the benefit of the doubt, I did, until the news came out about them working together. I am cool about the pap photos, it’s part of the game. I saw a documentary about the pap photos that hang about airports and they said, they get tip offs all the time. New York is a massive city and real easy to get lost if needed be.

It happens, the only think I don’t like is when children are dragged into it, the Angelina’s and Elsie’s who both need shaking up sometimes.

      • Nighty says:

@Lilac oh the hands… why did you have to mention the hands… He does have exquisite hands, doesn’t he?.. Wonder if he’s good at massaging the neck and the backs and… well.. the rest… * major sigh*

    • EscapedConvent says:

      @Miss Jupitero,

Thank you for chiming in here & doing what needed to be done. Hiddles! Hiddles ! Hiddles!

    • icerose says:

There was a tweet from someone to him saying that he was in Tahiti with Emma who I assume was his sister. You have to love a man who takes his little sister on holiday.

      • Froop says:

That tweet said ‘Rumor has it you are in Tahiti with Emma…’
So the person in question is probably just a fan making guesses, it doesn’t look like she actually knows.

      • Roberta says:

Froop, exactly that’s what I was going to say. Although it does make sense – it seems the kind of thing he’d do – but the identity of the woman wasnt confirmed.

Icerose, it might be an idea to word your comments better so they don’t come across as fact.

  23. Dawn says:

Although I love the new Sherlock on PBS as well as Sherlock on CBS I still think that my favorite all time Sherlock Holmes was Jeremy Brent. He plays Sherlock in Sherlock’s time and I just always thought he nailed what I always pictured in my head that Sherlock looked like. I guess I just love Sherlock Holmes be in the books or the television shows or whatever. I wish there was just a mystery channel who played nothing but Piorot, Miss Marble, Sherlock Holmes, Elliott Queen and so on.

    • Abby_J says:

What about RDJ? Doesn’t anyone have love for HIS Sherlock? 🙂 He’s never mentioned!

Not my favorite personally, but still RDJ!

      • Lilacflowers says:

I enjoy his Sherlock and that’s what Sherlock is supposed to be, right? Enjoyment!

    • EscapedConvent says:

Dawn, I love Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock too, & I confess I think of him as the definitive Sherlock. But I love Cumby’s & Martin Freeman’s Sherlock & Watson.

I agree with your wanting a channel like that too, but I think there are some around. There are a few Mystery channels I’ve seen on Cable, & also there’s a British channel called “Acorn TV” which has the shows you like. Also, Netflix has a good bit of British crime stuff. I can recommend Prime Suspect & Jack Taylor very highly. Netflix does have Hercule Poirot & Miss Marple too.

Have you ever seen Helen Mirren’s “Prime Suspect”? My favorite crime series of all time. Also, “Cracker” with Robbie Coltrane is fantastic.

      • Lilacflowers says:

One of our local PBS stations runs the Jeremy Brett Sherlock every Wednesday night. Helen Mirren’s Prime Suspect was wonderful. Cracker was good.

      • Vesta says:

I’m also nodding to Tennison & Fitz. Just excellent characters.

In general I fall for those series in which the detectives’ [often messy] personal lives and the crime cases get merged together in curious ways.
I don’t know if anyone else is familiar with “Inspector Morse”, but I love that old school fox, and used to think that Morse & Tennison would be perfect for each other…

    • Ally8 says:

I like Cumberbatch in general, but as far as Sherlock Holmes on film, Basil Rathbone forever!

Also, Moffat is a pompous twit and way overrated.

    • Intro Outro says:

Actually, there was another great but little known Sherlock series which was made in 1970’s in the USSR. Vasily Livanov plays Sherlock, the episodes are very true to the original Conan Doyle stories, acting is awesome and music is wonderful. If I am not mistaken, around 2005 Elizabeth II awarded him with the Order of British Empire for his portrayal of Holmes.

    • Intro Outro says:

Found an official sort of trailer for this Russian Holmes:

And this is original overture from the series, I like it sooo much:

  24. Lisa says:

This site needs more David Tennant posts.

    • Lilacflowers says:

yes, a lot more. And more James McAvoy posts. And more Ewan McGregor posts. And some Idris Elba too.

      • Sighs says:

Yes! More Mcavoy! He is scrumptious! Also yes to the Tennant!

I was a huge fan of the first Fright Night movie (yes, it’s a tad cheesy but Chris Sarandon is absolutely amazing in it), so I was worried when I heard they were doing a remake. But then I heard David Tennant was going to be in it, and he did, in fact, redeem it!

      • pru says:

Tennant would be good. More McAvoy would be great. And how about a true ginger – Domhnall Gleeson, maybe?

      • Delorb says:

If people would post to those threads, I’m sure there would be more of them. But the vast majority of replies are to anything Kardashian related. Puke. Meanwhile James McAvoy died on the vine.

    • M.A.F. says:

The site just needs more flavor. I like coming here but sometimes it is just the same people over and over again. Lets branch out.

    • Lindy79 says:

I’d also like more tv posts, I know its a celeb site but it would even be good filler. The game of thrones and walking dead ones were really good.

      • M.A.F. says:

Yes. But I got yelled at in the Games of Throne one for spilling spoilers after the Red Wedding (about how who did it). Should make two posts-one for those that don’t read the books and for those of us who do.

      • Froop says:

Yes, TV posts please! Although spoilers might be an issue.

  25. Nene says:

    They aren’t alone. I don’t find him sexy. At.All.
He is the male SPJ look-wise and to be blunt they have just one or two thing goin’ for them.
Where SPJ a decent actress and a fashionista,Benedict is a pretty good actor and fan-friendly.

Btw I really really wish celebitchy would stop makin’ him happen.
    #wishful thinking…

    • Delorb says:

WRONG! His feet look better. LOL I don’t think celebitchy is making him happen. They just bring us the gossip. They don’t create it.

  26. blended says:

wow lots of negative comments today. i would hate to be a celebrity. the way you get picked apart for even the smallest gesture or turn of phrase, nevermind the life choices you make. unfortunately today’s celebrity climate means a lot of scrutiny and unfair judgements (someone upthread went at him for acknowledging that he’s lucky and enjoying his life, as if to mean he’s full of himself. makes me shake my head the way people misconstrue everything).

but fortunately, i think he’ll end up the way he wants to, with a great career, awards, doing what he loves, and hopefully a good family life.

    • Sighs says:

I think people judge each other all the time, celebrity or no. Isn’t that what gossip is?

I do agree the celebrity climate is particularly harsh though, and made more so by social media.

And while I think people here tend to pick him apart sometimes, there is a large portion of positive posts as well. Today the pendulum swings into snark, but it will always swing back.

      • blended says:

justified criticisms are fine. but some of the things people pick him apart for, and claim to relinquish their fandom for, makes me shake my head. yes gossip is by nature superficial, but there’s a smart way to gossip imo.

      • Sighs says:

Oh come now, you have to admit that some of his fashion choices warrant some questioning. Mind you, I won’t not watch his movies because of his purple pants… 🙂

    • Katie says:

Oh, those pants are awful, Sighs. Most of his clothing choices are highly suspect…

On a more serious note, opinions are a two way street. People have the right to post whatever they want but other posters have the right to respond without policing/shaming unless it’s really inappropriate or personally attacking another poster, imo.

    • Delorb says:

“wow lots of negative comments today.”

Maybe all our periods have finally synced up? It was bound to happen one day.

  27. Matty says:

What is all the fuss about? BC looks
like a cross eyed albino rodent, which
is an insult to rodents everywhere. If he
were just some dude walking down the
street would people still think he’s hot?

    • Isadora says:

Maybe the point is that he’s NOT a dude walking down the street? He’s a great actor, he has an interesting life, he’s intelligent, he’s charming and witty. You might not like his looks but he seems like an overall interesting human being and if some people find THAT hot, that’s great, isn’t it?

If it were only about looking at a picture and going yay or nay, then life would be a model agency. It’s not. If Brad Pitt (who is generally considered hot, especially in his younger days) would sit stinking and sweating in a bar and catcall girls while being totally drunk, then I guess not so many women would find him great. Attraction is always based on a myriad of reasons (and context) and in the end tastes are still different – which is great because otherwise only a handful inhumanely beautiful beings would end up in happy relationships.

  28. Naddie says:

Maybe he really wasn’t, which shows what a hell of an actor he is. And damn, his face with the hair falling on will be in my dreams tonight.

  29. Miss Scarlet says:

Someone reported on IMDB that Kinvara was at a dinner for the Chelsea flower show. Has she passed Wanda’s litmus test?

    • Raven says:

I’m not sure if Benedict or Wanda attended that dinner. I couldn’t find any pictures of them there although it was well photographed and you would think Benedict’s important enough to garner attention. But there were a lot of people there including some high profile guests such as Crown Princess Marie-Chantal, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, Guy Pelly, Delevingne, and Rosamund Pike. Even Kinvara’s ex Ben Fogle showed up, so I’m not sure if her presence there means anything as far as a relationship with Benedict goes.

    • MissMary says:

Since Kinvara is titled and in that echelon, her attending events with the Royal stamp is not unexpected and not necesarily b/c Benny is there. BC wasn’t photographed at the event and with as much media attention surrounded his attendance at the flower show itself, it’s a pretty sure bet he’d have been photographed at the dinner as well.

  30. Amy says:

I don’t think he’s that good looking, he is rather average to me and a little creepy. He reminds me of the Tilda Swinton look–androgynous alien. I haven’t seen him in anything so I can’t speak for his acting capabilities. Maybe if I watched Sherlock I might change my mind. But I do like David Tennant!

  31. mazzie says:

I like the man but at this point I’m tired of his name popping up everywhere. I think people just put his name in for SEO purposes.

  32. Ellen says:

I can totally see Benny doing a McAvoy at fans one day.

    • Maggie says:

      @ Ellen

What did James McAvoy do to fans?

      • Delorb says:

If the story is to be believed, then he had every right to tell them to fork off. No means no.

      • A.Key says:

LOL, ah James, wrong approach but right intentions. “The X-Men actor was privately celebrating a friend’s birthday in the Earl Haig Hall social club close to his home… He’d politely told them he was having a night off as it was his friend’s birthday.” And what do you know, they continued to take photos of him anyway, shocker. Some people really have no boundaries, do they? If I were him, I’d have lost it too really.

      • Intro Outro says:

Ouch. I like you so much anyway, James, but I hope next time you find yourself in such a situation, you’ll summon all your power of will and will not blow your kettle up like that 😉

      • Maggie says:

Thanks Raven, I hadn’t heard about that.

It must get frustrating when they are just trying to have a night out with friends and are constantly pestered for autographs and photos.

No does mean no. Just because you are a fan does not mean you are entitled to their time and attention at any time.

      • Lindy79 says:

Don’t blame him one bit, if it happened as reported. They asked, he said no as he has a right to do, and then two went ahead and took photos anyway.

And yes, I can fully see Benedict (or any number of actors) doing this. I remember one shot I saw on twitter of him at an airport check in desk, he caught them taking a photo and he looks majorly pissed off. The hair salon was another one, so intrusive, I’d go mental! He’s pretty good at letting fans get photos from what I can see so no excuses for doing it without his knowledge and if they say no then leave them alone.

      • Tessa says:

I’m taking this story with a grain of salt. The British tabloids are always trying to get dirt and blow anything out of proportion on any of the five guys that are on the promotional rotation. That’s when they’re not making things up as they come. Convenient how it had to happen just now.
You can be great to 99% of the people you meet and it just takes one asshole to taint what was otherwise a flawless image.
Btw if they had a video wouldn’t they have used it by now to get the maximum exposure? It’s not worth wasting time on hearsay but it does do wonders for the gossip fodder.
And sure it’s not unlikely but it’s so out of character for him. He signs photos in Cannes for 20 minutes where he’s not even well known and where nobody does that and so he could easily blow the fans and then he goes on a rant. Way OOC.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Tessa:

Hmm, I don’t think that it is absolutely impossible that one and the same celeb would be happily signing photos in Cannes and getting seriously pissed at fans who gate-crashed his private party and violated his privacy. Wrong place, wrong time, wrong reasons.

      • Tessa says:

Yeah still…. I’d rather he’d kept being part of the Jackman-Ruffalo club then be signed off into the Shia-Worthington-Beans one. And “fans” don’t sell stories to gossip magazines, they complain on IMDB and tumblr if they have bad interactions with their favorites. It wreaks of 15 minutes of fame and it’s annoying for ruining an otherwise perfect guilty pleasure.

      • Lilacflowers says:

“a culmination of interruptions . . .” Seems he had been polite in refusing but some people didn’t stop. Actors have a right to privacy and private times with family and friends and people have to learn to respect that.

      • 'P'enny says:

sounds like he was drunk, and he should have handled it a lot better. it’s to be expected, he is entitled to his privacy but swearing at two girls, is a bit much. He could have just walked away.

      • Nighty says:

I don’t know whyn is it too much… so, he has to be the perfect polite person, whereas they are annoying him? This part of one always having to be f*cking perfect gets on my nerves, really…

        * Today I’m p*ssed since I actually felt like sending 4 students of mine to bloody hell – didn’t do, because I HAVE TO SET THE EXAMPLE, God forbid a teacher or celeb from loosing their temper as any other common mortal- and wasn’t going to throw them out since they were about to do a test… And trust me, bloody hell was not the expression I felt like using…. *

  33. anon says:

I personally think that Benedict is driven to succeed. I read an interview a while back that he wanted to follow Brad Pitts and George Clooney business plan. Like it or not that means going where the money and power is – hence the F1 circuit and royal appearances. Also-my take through many interviews is that Ben just wants to sample as much life as possible and he is getting his shot now. So good for him. I also think he’s wicked hyper so probably isn’t comfortable with something in the works.

    • Saimon says:

Polish actress Anna Prus, which Ben visited the cinema show in Krakow, told the press that they had “friendship” – and this friendship he specially flew to her in Cannes, and later they planned visit to the theater in London.

      • Duri says:

Great he doesn’t learn from his mistakes does he?? She seems like Katia 2.0. I mean she clearly wants attention by disclosing all these details like Katia did.

Benedict darling you are this close to getting kicked out from my crush list and if you are actually with this chick then buh bye.

      • Michaela says:

I am a little disappointed if this is true. How did the press find out? She told them so it is obvious what are her intentions.

      • J says:

she does totally look awful some of her older pictures. and the leaking info to the tabloids just smacks of famewhore.

it seems weird that he would fly into cannes to see her and then show up a day later at the GP with Kinvara and the SM crew. unless he flew out and then flew back (the premiere she was pictured at in the dress they mentioned in the article was on May 18, a week before the GP).

also based on instagram pics today he may be road tripping his way back across europe on the way home.

oh well. let the speculation begin 😀

      • Duri says:

@J I don’t know why he just can’t find a descent a girl who ain’t a famewhore, is he really that stupid to not see it??? Ughhh day ruined.

I googled this chick and she seems so weird, I have seen couple pics of her touching men’s crotch for photos like WTF

      • Michaela says:

@Duri agreed! she is lower than Katia. IF (and a big if) it’s true, then i don’t even know what to say…it’s just sad for him

      • CoffeeCat says:

@Saimon – thank you for this find!

But let’s think positive fellow Cumberbitches – at least that Polish woman is not a blonde! That’s quite an achievement IMO. *snort*

Also, that means the secret gf who he’s madly in love with does not exist. Yay!

        @J
“it seems weird that he would fly into cannes to see her and then show up a day later at the GP with Kinvara”

Why not? Different days, different dishes. *shrug*

      • J says:

she does seem to have quite a long resume on IMDB and there are pix online of her helping orphans in thailand. but then again some of those other pix of her out there are just nasty. not sure what to think of this one. could have been a harmless quote about him being nice and they happened to meet at the off plus festival and now it is getting blown out of proportion.

speaking of Katia, she seems to have gotten herself a part in a movie (Our Kind of Traitor) judging by pix on her Facebook. Of course she is still uncredited on IMDB for whatever part it was that she played. Wonder if her “acting coach” has actually helped her acting? lol.

      • Sighs says:

She looks…..rough….is the nicest thing I can come up with.
*if* this is true (come on, it could just be a she sat next to him somewhere and thought she could get some mileage)then his picker is officially broken. Have all the flings you want, but jeez, try to find someone who doesn’t look like they were rode hard and hung up wet. And a famewhore.

      • J says:

        @coffeecat

i just meant that since he had the SM group in tow, if he was at Cannes it makes a lot more sense for them to have gone there together for some sort of business development type of meeting. not that he dragged them, +/- Kinvara along to meet his (rode-hard-and-hung-up-wet, i am dying at this one!) possible new lady friend. if he really does show up with her in London i’m sure the paps/tabloids will have fun with it, anyway.

but yes, +1 for her not being blonde. Or 22.

      • CoffeeCat says:

        @Sighs
Could it be that those who don’t look like they were rode hard and hung up wet (love that description btw, cracked me up!) just don’t want to touch our dear Uncle Benny with a ten foot pole? I mean… we have absolutely no idea what BC is behind the closed doors. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the total opposite of his public persona. Just sayin’…

      • Tia says:

He wasn’t even in Cannes people would have noticed.

    • J says:

      interesting. thanks for finding this!

the google translate makes my brain hurt. if he actually takes this girl to the theater in london in june i’m sure the tabloids will have a field day. i googled the pictures of her on the red carpet in cannes and she did look very pretty. not a mention of him being there though in any other publication other than this one.

    • Nighty says:

Oh, whatever.. beginning to think that he is more and more of a womanizer.. what the heck… not even commenting…

      • Duri says:

@Nighty—–He is exactly going on the path of Clooney, Leo and Fassy. These womanizing habits were what made me dislike Leo (my first ever crush lol) and Fassy (my biggest crush before Benedict came along).

Let’s just hug each other and find a new guy *sobs

      • Nighty says:

Oh God, do need some Hiddles or whoever to better my humour today… God…
*Nighty, calm down… look at some nice pics of the boys..*

    • MissMary says:

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah that’s either b.s. or wildly misquoted… He didn’t go to Cannes this year, period (as much as he’s not super famous in the States, it still would’ve shown up in UK media and fan sites if he’d gone because he’d have been papped). The “friendship” line…frankly, sounds like Katia 2.0. There’s several pics of him in Poland w/the Sunny March guys and doing tourist stuff…she’s not in any of them. Makes me wonder if they hooked up and she’s pissed he’s not wanting more, or if she’s hardcore attention whoring and *wants* there to be a connection…

ETA: Wasn’t he doing the Windsor Castle ‘do and the flower show when she was in Cannes?

      • Saimon says:

He dined with her after going to the movies, and then went for a walk around town.

This girl has a deferred probation for possession of cocaine

      • MissMary says:

Hmm. I don’t know. I’m not thinking the man is a saint or a DIsney prince but I’m not entirely buying it, at least not to the extent the tab is trying to sell it. I can get with the going to dinner and hanging out but I am rolling my eyes at flying into Cannes for half a day and bringing her to the theatre in June.

I might have to eat my words if he shows up with her at some show in June and then I’ll just smdh at his choice skills, picking women who run off to the tabs for attention.

      • Nicola says:

        Total 100% rubbish.

      • Encumbered says:

What the hell is this about? He left his guy friends for an evening for…this? Shocking, it is. Shocking! lol….

      • MissMary says:

        @Nicola: Agreed.

I think they sat next to one another, maybe chatted a bit, walked out of the theatre together… and either the tab ran with their own fanfic on it, or she did and is milking that cow dry.

      • Katie says:

I missed all the fun but unless he can teleport, he wasn’t near France when she was. It’s bull, plain and simple.

However, before you throw the woman under the bus, it’s definitely a tabloid source only and entirely possible she never said a word to them.

    • Miss Scarlet says:

You know he’s been keeping his hookups on the down low. He’s even keeping his distance from Kinvara in those Monaco pics, and she’s in his ‘respectable’ circle. He hasn’t been a monk this whole time, and thirsty chicks are throwing their cat bags at him wherever he goes.

    • Duri says:

Lol you guys found a silver lining in such travesty (she ain’t blonde). I get a feeling he did not go to Cannes, had Benedict been there Harvey Weinstein would have dragged him out from his ears to walk the carpet and get the buzz going for TIG. She might have been a mere hook up for the time he was in Poland and now she will milk it to no end which serves him right….that’s what you get for hooking up with famewhores.

Watch he’ll hook up with someone random from Boston while filming or maybe lovely Amber Heard can find him a model who is ready to use his fame like she is doing with Johnny.

      • MissMary says:

There’s some mumblings on tumblr (because of course tumblr lol) that he’s trying to be seen with women in advance of TIG opening to quell any “omg he played a gay man so he must be gay!” rumors. *eye roll*

And entirely good point about Cannes… Weinstein would have skinned him alive if he’d gone for even one hot second and NOT promo’d TIG even informally. TIG is a big deal for Weinstein and co this awards season and he’d have had Benny out there so fast doing the dog and pony show for the cameras…

      • J says:

Exactly, with TIG and all the other casting news I’m sure if he was in Cannes for any length of time we would have seen some pictures.

Also, FWIW the pix of her in the dress that the article alleges she picked to wear to see him were posted from a premiere that was on the 18th. He was at the Park Theatre gala on the 18th and then the chelsea flower show on the 19th.

And she is sooooo not going to be Wanda approved, if she’s for real. lol.

      • Saimon says:

He may have been in Cannes, one Russian journalist wrote that he saw him there during the festival

      • MissMary says:

@J: LOL I am so picturing Wanda’s disapproving expression!

Yeah the whole story reeks of PR grabbing on the actress’s part, or wild speculation based on some innocent comments.

@Saimon: I’m always super suspicious when it’s just one journo, esp when it is involving someone who’d attract a lot of pap attention.

But like I said before, all my cynicism on this might be misplaced and he did hook up with her and has poor choicing skills in women, picking the ones who run their mouths to tabs at the first chance they get.

    • Felice says:

I won’t lose respect for him but jesus I thought people were exaggerating how naive he was.

      • MissMary says:

I really think, in this case, it’s all a sham and not a “new gf” or “omg secret love” thing. It’s either blown out of proportion or a load of horse hockey. But he does seem really naive and prone to befriend or hook up with people who want to use his fame.

      • Miss Scarlet says:

There is a possibility that a lot of his fans won’t consider because of his public image…he’s enjoying himself, banging his way around the world right now. Men don’t do that with women they’re going to take home to Mummy. They try all the ‘flavors’ that they know are wrong for them/have no long term potential whatsoever. Makes it easier to leave them behind when it’s time to move on.

      • Felice says:

Oh like wild oats? I mean I would be like that if I were committed for a third of my life.

      • MissMary says:

@Miss Scarlet: I’m legit wondering if that’s what this was and she either ran her mouth to the tabs when she realized he didn’t want anything long term, or saw a chance to get some of his coat tails and exploit their hook up for her benefit. IDK and it’s purely speculation on my part saying that–I have nothing to back it up.

      • Shiv says:

@Miss Scarlett couldn’t have put it better myself. It’s sad that there are some fans who don’t/won’t believe he has ‘casual’ relationships and believe he wouldn’t go with anyone who isn’t ‘posh’ or ‘proper’.

      • Sighs says:

Shiv- pretty sure most of us know he has hook-ups and what not. We’re not *really* that invested. It’s just fun to speculate and gossip.
And there’s a long way down from proper to…..whatever.

  36. Saimon says:

Benedict in Germany today, and Kinvara in London, who experienced all may be quiet

    • Miss Scarlet says:

Yeah, and the chambray shirt and maroon pants are back!

      http://instagram.com/p/oi25gCMSHn/

      • Shiv says:

She could just be pretending to be in London now to stop the speculation. Haha!

      • MissMary says:

@Shiv: LOL I saw that floated on twitter earlier.

Apparently, some folks are outright asking her if she’s with him (and being deleted) and also asking a couple who took a pic with him today in Germany who he was with, etc. There’s specualtion it’s all a complex ruse to make fans think she’s not with him… IDK, if that’s what it takes to date a celeb, I don’t think I have the energy, lol.

      • Shiv says:

Haha, poor Kinvara! When I first learned of her, I thought she was a friend who was also a fan i.e putting #sherlock #benedict etc under her Instagram photos and liking numerous fans photos of Sherlock. She probably wish never had done any of that! ….or perhaps she’s the fan that eventually got their idol haha!

    • Leo says:

She just posted a new photo, from an industry event in London. Hope that’s proof enough 🙂

      • MissMary says:

LOL it is unless you’re a die hard stan, then it’s all part of the grand conspiracy to keep his secret love a secret because she’s the one with the super important job and wants to be hush hush… All a clever ruse, those PR pics.

        😉

      • Shiv says:

Nope. She has had someone log onto her computer at home and upload a photo and tag a local venue in London! Hahaha. Of course, I’m kidding.

  37. Anne tommy says:

Can’t find the comment, think it was boredsuburbanhousewife but I so agree re European actors looking real, and about the great cop show spiral. Just compare the class Of Kristen Scott Thomas to so many US actresses of the same age. And the lovely lined looks of Daniel Auteil versus stretchy hollywood guys. Spiral is fab, Gregory fitoussi one of the best looking men on TV and two great parts in it for good looking women who are more than eye candy. And the lovely silver fox judge Robin does not even have very good teeth! The man would not be allowed near a hollywood set with those teeth. But he’s great!

Ps Tom hiddleston has nice teeth…

  38. Raven says:

Is there any actual evidence that he was with this Polish girl or is it just someone telling stories for a chance at attention?

    • MissMary says:

Seems like it’s someone (either her or the tabs) telling stories, blowing something out of proportion. She was sitting next to him at the film festival but there’s been no other pics of them together and the allged trip to Cannes “for half a day just to see her” is verging on ridiculous… If he DOES bring her to some theatre event in June, I’ll be shocked and eat my words.

      • J says:

@MissMary – and allegedly at some point he’s due in Boston for filming as well as now the critic’s choice award show in mid June in LA (so he’ll probably disappear in Cali for a few weeks as he is wont to do). I agree, doubtful this turns into anything.

      • MissMary says:

Black Mass started filming this week and apparently (according to the intrawebs anyway, and we all know how accurate that can be lol) he’s due next week, after his go at the Hay Festival doing Letters Live. At some point he’s supposed to film an indie this year, and there’s the run up to awards season which means a heavy rotation of parties and events to be “seen” and get his name and mentions of TIG in the media…

      • Shiv says:

Is there a pic of them sitting together?

He probably had his way with her and that’s that.

I’m beginning to think Nighty is right – womaniser! He’s probably no intention of settling down and this is why there is no secret or actual girlfriend. My opinion, meh

      • MissMary says:

@Shiv: She sat next to him at the film festival in Krakow. They didn’t arrive together or leave together as far as any pics show. He was with his Sunny March crew for that.

      • Saimon says:

In Krakow, during the festival almost all the time he was in the hotel and almost did not go on trips, apart from visiting the castle, and after the festival mine. And visit the pool on the second day after arrival. However, he was in the bars at night, there are photos, so he could spend his time with her. Especially because he is an adult man he wants a serious relationship and sex.

      • J says:

This is why I’m having trouble believing there is much to this story – his time in poland was really well documented between the fans and the festival coverage itself. If this woman is a reasonably well known actress in Poland (she has a longish list of projects on IMDB) how could they not have made more of the “local star hanging out with big name movie star” thing? Especially if they were publicly sitting together at a screening. I feel like someone would have seen something. and he did spend his evenings in the club (a couple nights running) and met up with fans at the hotel as well.

ETA: the project i’m doing at work today is really f*cking boring…must be why i’m apparently so over-invested in this story instead. *facepalm*

      • MissMary says:

@J: It’s like you read my mind. He was seen a *lot* and had several fan pics taken and no one saw him out with her, a known Polish actress, *in* Poland? Stinks of PR and/or click bait to me.

      • J says:

@MissMary – it’s like “oh look, famous english-language actor, let’s score some publicity – maybe it’ll get picked up by the English press.” since she obviously doesn’t seem that known outside of the polish/eastern european press…a quick google search doesn’t turn up anything i haven’t had to run through a translator. it does stink of bad PR on her part.

      • halo says:

I wouldn’t be surprise if he did visit polish girl in Cannes right after the Park theatre party. It would explain why he looked so tired and jetlagged the following day during the flower show. And also KB was in Antibes the evening after Monaco GP assuming BC was with her (we all know how much B loves the south of France) that place is not that far from Cannes. And besides isn’t that his m.o. Hook up with famewhores and be seen with gal pal at the next public event and get papped.
ps. I think he is in Germany to see a music concert with Adam Selves, read his twitter.

      • Leo says:

        @ halo
Unless he’s a teleporter, he couldn’t have. The gala ended very late and he was in Chelsea around 11 am the next day. You can’t just pop over to Cannes from London.

And what does Antibes have to do with anything? 🙂 The GP business lasts well into the evening.

      • Raven says:

@halo, I think the Gruffalo is a childrens’ theatre show but it’s hilarious to imagine Benedict and Adam excitedly attending and enjoying themselves.

      • Miss Scarlet says:

@halo: And besides isn’t that his m.o. Hook up with famewhores and be seen with gal pal at the next public event and get papped.

Ahem. That’s exactly what he did with Katia and Charlotte, LOLZ.

      • halo says:

Oops! My mistake about the music concert (didn’t really look into it properly). But I do find your thoughts amusing Raven. That’s something cumby can look forward to once he has kids 🙂
@Leo As for the Antibes I was quite intrigue about it because that was the set location when KB posted that photo of B on the boat, only to delete it a day later posting a different photo to say she already left. I thought they would have stayed in Monaco longer… but of course there was no indication B and the rest of the guys was with her there. :-/

    • Nicola says:

Oh come ON. You honestly think he has ‘had his way’ with this repellant woman? Are you trolling? Because I really cannot see how anyone could possibly question this even for a second.

      • Saimon says:

There are photos and a short video, if you look on YouTube, where he and his friends out of the hotel to go to the show LF he gives a few autographs, she came with him out of the hotel

      • J says:

Saimon – I can’t access youtube from work but remember his niece Emily is also blonde and is often at public events with him. I also can’t access instagram from work but on your comment below referencing Tertius’ instagram, he has a family member (?sister?) who is a blonde and is in many of his photos. Benedict has referenced her in an interview before as a friend he’s had dinner with. He’s known their family since he was like 6 years old.

      • MissMary says:

@Saimon: I just looked on youtube can can’t find the video you’re describing. Do you have a link?

@J: I think Saimon is referring to Anna Prus in the video as the woman who apparently left the hotel with him.

TBH… if she’s leaving with him *and his friends*… I’m giving even more side eye. And extra on top of that as it was not picked up by any media until, suddenly, now when she “drops the news”. Wonder if she was disappointed no one twigged to her being in the video where he’s with his friends and signing autographs?

      • Shiv says:

Seen the video, not her. Doesn’t even look like Anna Prus.

      • Nicola says:

Saimon – you’re incredibly confused about a lot of things.
That is not her in the video. Clearly.

      • MissMary says:

Finally found the vid (my search-fu is weak today, it seems)… Looks like she’s local PR/handler. Maybe I’m wrong and she’s a hook up but doesn’t look like Anna Prus.

      • CoffeeCat says:

        @Nicola
“Oh come ON. You honestly think he has ‘had his way’ with this repellant woman?”

“Repellant”? Ahem. Well. It’s not that I’m disagreeing with you on that but you do realize that Cumby’s opinion may differ from ours? 😉

Edit: Anyway, the comments upthread prove that the whole story is complete BS.

      • J says:

@missmary can you post the link? i can’t watch from work but can take a look later tonight.

      • Tia says:

Saimon starts to sound like a troll it’s not her as far as I can see.

      • Nicola says:

        @coffeecat

He’d have to be clinically insane.

    • Shiv says:

@halo how do you know she was in France? Just because she posted a pic on Instagram flying over France…which is just next to Monaco?
I highly doubt he’s attending to both these ladies – if he is and in this manner, man I wish I had his air miles! 🙂

    • Felice says:

She must be a firecracker if it’s worth the 12 hours of going back and forth.

  39. Saimon says:

History Katya finished, as it came to New Year holidays in Russia with her boyfriend, however, before this article was crap in the press with her interview and an interview on Russian TV. In the U.S., Benedict was a girl, in February he sney separated and since then he has no steady girlfriend. Now Polish actress decided propiarit themselves at his expense.

    • J says:

Saimon – a girl in february in the US? Who do you mean? What do you mean by “propiarit” (I’m sorry i’m having trouble following).

Also – I saw that russian TV clip where Katia was interviewed but I couldn’t find anywhere a translation of what was said. Are you able to help?

      • Saimon says:

Yeah, I mean, that Benedict was a girl he had met her a few months, who she is, I do not know all the details of her blonde hair, and worked in the United States.
Interview about Katie, she and her sister recorded interviews in Israel, where she did not say anything serious some hints, but in the Russian press, she talked about the fact that Benedict visited him at the play, gave her acting lessons, and gave her a list of books for reading, all interviews with careful statements, nothing but friendship.

      • CoffeeCat says:

Saimon, I’m afraid I don’t follow either. Where did the blonde gf rumor come from? Some Russian tabloid?

      • Shiv says:

Is Saimon perhaps referring to the unfounded evelina fox rumours?

      • CoffeeCat says:

Ah yes, Evelina/Evalina/whatever. I guess you’re right, Shiv.

      • Saimon says:

Rumors of a blonde girl not from the Russian press, this information appeared after recording W dh from Benedict’s inner circle, if you do not trust me, in instagramm Tertius Bune have photos of Benedict and the girl in New York on Christmas.

      • Raven says:

@Shiv, if so, we can safely say that was the result of people on Tumblr jumping the gun. IIRC, someone posted that the friend from Harrow that Fox referred to was not Benedict at all and people had just assumed it was since she has some of the same friends and was at some of the same events. That sort of assumption is a bit dangerous because there were no claims made on her part, all fan speculation. And sometimes fans get carried away. I know I do!

I also don’t think Benedict was even in the US in February except for the short visit to NYC for the BAFTA interview. I thought he left LA at the end of January and returned to London, so I’m not sure how he could have dated someone in the US in Feb unless it was a super short fling. Even if the OP meant they separated in February, I feel like we’d have seen at least some evidence of a gf’s existence since he was photographed in so many random places whilst in California. Wouldn’t he have taken her to that salsa dancing night, for example?

      • MissMary says:

@Raven: By all accounts, he was with his guy friends in Ca and you’re right, he DID fly back to London after the Bafta NY interview. Like someone said on the other BC thread–a storm in a teacup.

      • Saimon says:

After Bafta NY Benedict did not immediately flew to London, he returned only on February 20, and even missed a BAFTA Award and receiving the Queen.

      • Encumbered says:

Bah, humbug! Benedict was in Vermont for Xmas with the Bune family. He was snapped buying snowboarding equipment and Tertius posted a video (on Dec. 26) of him speaking while Tertius’ dad and Poppy the dog romped in the snow.

      • MissMary says:

@Saimon: you’re right–he was in the States for a few more days (the BAFTA Award–he wasn’t nominated for it and never officially confirmed to attend, per his PR and agency when they were asked by fansites why he wasn’t there. Same w/the ‘do for the Queen. He never confirmed attendance at the party with the Royals, per his agency and PR when asked by fan sites about his absence).

      • Leo says:

I’m sorry Saimon, but are perhaps Anna Prus? Or are you making this up or just having a laugh? Or getting your wires extremley crossed?

Were does all this come from? 90% of it doesn’t even make sense or is factually incorrect.
I like gossip, but not of the made-up sort.

      • MissMary says:

@Leo: I’m glad you asked that, lol–I was just starting to wonder that myself…

      • Raven says:

Is this the picture we’re talking about: http://instagram.com/p/iFwQ7pILvc/

I assumed he wasn’t with those girls as he’s walking behind them with a guy, and there’s someone randomly walking on their own wearing what looks like a headset right in front of them. Whether or not he left NYC directly following the BAFTA interview, I still think it would have been hard for him to fit in any sort of relationship that wasn’t ultra-casual with someone considering how busy he was. Although it does make that supposed sighting of him earlier this month feeding a blonde woman on the Lower East Side a little more interesting.

    • MissMary says:

      wrong spot! sorry!

    • Saimon says:

      As you wish. Goodbye

      • halo says:

lol – so much speculation! Saimon why didn’t you come out with any of this while it was happening and how can you be sure BC had a girlfriend during that time? To be fair I did see a pic from tertius before xmas in new york. http://iconosquare.com/p/614109193990880220_198177093
But it’s hard to say from the pic if he’s with any of these blond women. I have to admit he was awefully quiet during that time. That Efox i believe was a brunette but died her hair blond after rumours came out, but she lives in L.A. Your suggesting possible blonde gf is in NY explains why he was there back and fort this year there was even sighting of him “feeding a blond” days before the lunch with Dakota. But there was no definite proof of a girlfriend. Just pieces of random sightings and comments put together.

      • Leo says:

Before the Met Gala in May, he was in NYC just once this year. Once in five months and that was for the Bafta conversation. I wouldn’t call that a lot, quite the opposite.

  40. Princess says:

I’ve liked whatever of BC and Hiddles work that I have seen but I am a bit bored of them constantly being featured here. It’s like the Ben and Tom show. I agree with the poster who said it’s almost like he’s popular enough to sit at the cool table now, so he’s going to, with relish. I think that’s true of both of them. I like them as actors but they aren’t well known outside of these sites and I try not to read too much about them because BC comes across as a bit contradictory, ie really doesn’t like the fan attention but that had only come from Sherlock and he owes his success to that. And Hiddles comes across as completely insincere or maybe that is just his way of never having an opinion about anything and being all things to all men. His preachy quotes do my head in, love your life, blah blah blah. Tommy it’s easy for you to love your life, even before being famous what with you being a trust fund baby, look at Gemma Arterton. She was at RADA too but on a scholarship as the daughter of a cleaner and welder and left up to her eyeballs in debt despite working in the evenings to pay her rent whereas Tommy got all the time in the world to “develop his craft”, love his life, blah blah blah and work on his acting etc. I’m also tired of all the people who invest way too much into any of these actors and actresses to the extent where they go crazy if anyone says anything remotely critical and it’s worse with BC and Hiddles fans. Just the fact that I feel like I had to preface this comment by stating I like their work tells you all you need to know. I come on this site because I really like a lot of the commentators, and all the interesting things they talk about, Fanty, Sixer, J Eyre and way too many to name all of you! and it’s a bit of light reading away from all the serious stuff I do but let’s all get a bit of perspective, we may like these guys but they don’t really give a monkeys about us other than as a means to an end ie a fan base for them to leverage to get to do the work they want to. Also, re Martin freeman, read his comments on race, Muslims, multiculturalism, they are problematic to say the least and it has ruined Sherlock for me a bit which I used to enjoy.
Anyways, I hope no one takes this personally as it’s not meant that way and I don’t mean to be harsh just my two penny’s worth.peace out ladies and gents

    • Isadora says:

I understand what you are saying. I’m also not in the least interested in Kim Kardashian (or her siblings) or LeAnn Rimes and her husuband (whatever his name is). Sure, reading some of their antics can be funny but they are featured regularly here on this site – more so than on other gossip sites. But you know what? I don’t click on their stories and when I do, I hardly ever read the comments. Because I’m not that interested.

Being not that interested and still reading all the stories and comments and then complaining about the actors, their background and the people who discuss them is a bit contradictory, isn’t it?

    • 'P'enny says:

      @Princess

Tommy paid for RADA, according to his interview through work he got paid for doing some BBC work. Although, he did admit he didn’t have to struggle as others do.

But, I would like to know how you know he was a trust fund baby? the Vestey Trust fund, is direct descents only. His line broke four generations back. [if I counted that correctly]

Although, don’t get wrong for a minute, there is wealth in his family, but I have never read any official line he was in receipt of a trust fund, he drove the same beat-up car for ten years.

And, yeah, I am too invested in Hiddles and I admit it. and I too need to get a life of this site for a bit. And his preachy quotes get on my nerves, too. so I can criticise him as well as defend him.

      • Katie says:

I could be wrong, ‘P’enny, but I think he’s directly descended from Edmund Vestey–that’s why he’s listed in the peerage books and it would make him entitled to trust fund money. However, trust funds often have that 21 or 23 age requirement, so it may not have been available when he was in school.

  41. Raven says:

    (Double post, sorry)

    • MissMary says:

LOL that’s kind of a cute pic but I’m a fan of actual casual unposed pics and not the “Oh hey I’m totally just going to the store but have on 500 dollar shoes, a full face of make up and clothing better suited to the red carpet but see? TOTALLY casual!” pics lol.

Yeah it looks like the girls in front of them are in their own group, linked arms and chatting, and he and the friend are just behind them. but who knows lol–hard to tell from a photo.

    • Leo says:

Yeah, I would assume that’s the photo in question.

I think one of the two women is Bune’s sister. And there is no chance he would post a photo with BC’s secret GF in it.

      • MissMary says:

Unless that’s what they WANT us to think! It’s a double cross! Post pics of the secret girlfriend because who would expect the secret gf to be in a pic! It’s so clever, they could stick a tail on that plan and call it a ferret!

(Sorry… my snark is bubbling up this evening).

      • CoffeeCat says:

LOL MissMary, you nailed it girl! Now we know, ahahahaha! Hiding in plain sight, that’s what it is. Cumberbitches are smart. Cumberbitches cannot be tricked. *evil grin*

      • Leo says:

@ MissMary, don’t be sorry! It’s fun 🙂 I should be working, but this is much better.

Regarding the possible hook-up, I call bull. If they met at the festival, when did the dinner/movie/walk take place? He was see on Saturday and Sunday in clubs and pubs, talking to people and signing autographs. Not only does that not look like the behaviour of a guy on the prowl, but wouldn’t someone have recognized the woman?

And the Cannes thingy? It’s enough to check Twitter and you’ll see he was spotted in London every single day (jogging, going to theatre, in a book store, out and about, at the chiropractics…)

Sure, he has flings/casual sex. And why not? It’s normal to me. But I really can’t imagine how this could be one of them.

  42. Isadora says:

Aside from all the hook-up gossip, here’s something really nice:

It seems that Benedict got nominated for a Critics Choice award for Sherlock? (category Best Actor in a Movie or Mini-Series)

The Hollow Crown got nominated too, although not Hiddles specifically (otherwise he would be in the same category as Cumby and some fans would have a difficult time lol). Martin Freeman is nominated in the same category though (for Fargo) and as Best Supporting Actor in Sherlock.

    • Old Enough says:

Not sure if I’m replying in the right place, Don’t really care who he may or may not be dating, as I’m old enough to be his mother, but having met him in person, he is much more attractive than he appears in photographs. Also has an amazing body, fit and slim but muscular. If he’s having fun after 10+ years in a monogamous relationship, more power to him. Better now than after he’s married. And given how dedicated to privacy he is, any woman who announces her “relationship” to him is not in a real relationship with him.

  43. Lindy79 says:

That polish actress. .the pictures in the article. AMAZING! Like Geordie Shore.
Spend thrifty Cumberbatch in his maroon pants and denim shirt that he only takes off to crack and air out, flying into Cannes for an afternoon like he’s Leo DiPlayboy.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

    • Sighs says:

Oh the pants. I’m sure he at least throws them in the dryer to fluff.

      • Nighty says:

So in your opinion he doesn’t wash them.. maybe he hangs them out in the balcony on rainy days (after all he’s “cheap” – it’s a good way of sparing water – and considering London’s weather it’s quite possible… )

Anyone from London knows where he lives? Please, on a rainy day pass in front of the house and look upwards to check my theory… If you see the maroon trousers hanging, I’ll know I’m right…
        😛

      • Lindy79 says:

That’s how you find him, look for the high flying maroon pants, it’s his Batsignal..and after he’s had his way with you he leaves a business card with nothing but a picture of them on it.
It’s all very 1980s Milk Tray
“and all because the ladies love Milk Tray Maroon Pants”

*we actually don’t and would love it if he bought some new jeans*

  44. Kaal says:

I’ve seen some rumour he’s really not into either men or women. That he’s sort of worried about what people would think.

    • Raven says:

That would be interesting. But I hope he’d feel no shame if it’s true. Not everyone’s interested in sex and there’s nothing wrong with that.

    • Isadora says:

He should (or shouldn’t) do what makes him happy, but honestly, I think that’s again a case of blending Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch.

    • Katie says:

That I’ve heard as well, Kaal, from a semi-credible source. I don’t see anything bad about that either but you’re the first person to mention in it here so hey figured I’d get it off my chest LOL.

      • MissMary says:

I’ve always gotten the bi vibe from him but I think that’s just me wanting him to be “one of the family” like Alan Cumming, lol, and give us some bi visibility. I’d totally buy that he’s asexual but not aromantic, but that may just be me muddling him w/Sherlock.

    • blended says:

nah i think people are combining the real person with the fictional character. i think he’s straight, but maybe bi-curious. i just think he’s not trusting of people he would want to hook up with, so he doesn’t. now that he’s famous he’s paranoid about stuff leaking. he started dating anna pretty soon after the olivia break up because he wasn’t super-famous yet. now it’s something he would be way more cautious about.

      • Katie says:

Didn’t hear it from a fan, blended, but it was definitely not something I or they could genuinely confirm, so take it with a massively huge grain of salt.

I’d just dismiss it out of hand it was any other sexuality, but unfortunately the public really doesn’t take kind to asexuality.

    • justine says:

You can choose to be celibate without being asexual. There was a blind item (I know, huge grain of salt) about Sarah Paulson’s having been celibate for over 5 years, because her career has never been better.

I don’t think Benedict is asexual or celibate though. Is it that hard to believe that this man has casual affairs?

  45. Sarah says:

Lol! Well, if he did hook up with that Polish lady and she blabbed to the tabloids, I know *someone* who is getting her London theatre invitation rescinded!

There’s no way he’d stick with someone who talks to the tabs. That I absolutely believe. She wants attention.

  46. allheavens says:

I think Cumby has long-term booty calls, ones that don’t blab to the press. He isn’t stupid and the Katia debacle opened his naive little eyes to how people will use you to further their careers.

Not saying he isn’t open to the casual hookup. I’m sure some women find his new found fame attractive and I am sure he isn’t above using it for causal sex.

But the Polish actress? Well homegirl is gushing a little too much about what is basically a “hit it and quit it” (if it did occur) so I’m going to go with straight up famewhoring. But I wouldn’t put it past her to show in June on her own dime to extend her time in the spotlight.

    • Raven says:

Katia was trying to spread the word that Benedict went incognito to see her play last fall because he didn’t want to attract attention. I personally don’t believe it, but if that or the Polish story have any truth to them, then I’m not sure he does learn. I thought Martin and Alice were just teasing him when they talked about how naive he is, but I honestly can see it now. I don’t think he’s an idiot or anything, but I hope he’s a better judge of character than to get involved with obvious famewhores. I know men think with their lower halves sometimes, but sheesh.

    • Felice says:

I concur and unfortunately when some of these girls don’t keep their mouths shut, the younger fans hear and assume she’s ‘the one’. I don’t believe it 100% but I’m sure he hasn’t been married to his right hand and internet connection for the past 2 years.

      • allheavens says:

        @Felice

That last line made me laugh. But some probably do think he sits at home in his window seat reading the Bible and making lists of all his future wife’s characteristics.

    • justine says:

He could be bi and that’s why we don’t hear about all his affairs? He spends a lot of time with that Bune guy, who I swear is gay. Xmas holidays too? Just saying…

      • 'P'enny says:

        @Justine

Just say, not. What can people not spend time with friends at Christmas without being in a relationship, especially when he is America on business? ?Don’t know about you but I prefer to go snowboarding over my xmas break, then spending time with my parents, who might have had other plans anyway. Occasionally, it nice to get away from the folks at Christmas.

      • Nighty says:

        Agree with @p’enny…
What’s wrong with spending xmas with friends…??
The fact he spent Xmas holidays with a friend doesn’t mean he’s gay…
And I also believe Xmas is overrated.. but that’s just me..

@ P’enny, thanks for your measured response and am glad you agree re the preachy quotes. Maybe I was nitpicking a bit, hopefully Hiddles will voice a proper opinion one of these days and not famewhore so much.
