Did Allure Mag call Lauren Conrad ‘basic’ & ‘remarkably unremarkable’?

Lauren Conrad tweeted this ^^ a few days ago and it’s still making the gossip rounds. LC tweeted a scan from Allure’s newest issue (I think), the one with Rachel McAdams on the cover. Apparently, Allure decided to do a feature on the kinds of “style” types that exist in the world: Basic, Bohemian Hippie, Street Stylist and something I can’t read. They used LC’s photo for the “Basic” type and described the “basic” girls as: “Made famous by Kreayshawn, and viral by YouTube, the Basic woman is remarkably unremarkable. What’s noteworthy about her style is its very plainness. Except to her. She swears those red-soled shoes are cutting-edge.”

So, is this terrible? Rude? Or just funny? I think LC is basic as well, in that she never really steps out of her pleasant style comfort zone, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. She never makes waves. She’s not looking to make waves. She makes affordable clothes and accessories for middle class girls and young professional women. She is her market.

Here’s what I do think is weirdly funny: I’ve always thought that LC looks just like a blonde, American version of Duchess Kate/Kate Middleton. I’ve always said that. If you put LC in a brunette wig (with SAUSAGE CURLS), they would be twinsies. I also think they have similar “basic” style. And Kate is the one with sausage curls… so did Allure secretly want to call out Kate’s boring style and they pulled their punch and labeled LC “basic” instead?

I mean, they didn’t lie. And yes, OMG she looks just like Kate!

    • danielle says:

I’ve always thought she looks like Kate!

    • Pandy says:

Kate is much cuter than LC.

    • may234 says:

How does she look like Kate? Lauren’s face is so meaty and chunky. And Kate is the only celebrity who wears true sausage curls, the rest of them have some sort of Farah’s waves variation.

  2. Sally says:

Lauren Conrad is the epitome of a basic girl. She follows the ombré trend with her hair , drinks Starbucks , picked a BOY over going to Paris , has a lifestyle web site, is famous for being famous ….

    • OSTONE says:

She may be basic, but she has a legitimate career for it. I like her and her style, it works for some people. I don’t think she is unremarkable.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I like her too. I thought her response was meant to be funny. I doubt she’s really mad about it.

      • Mel M says:

I agree, why is basic bad? I like her style so I must be basic but it works for me. She’s doing her thing and I believe she knows her audience buyers. I have a 2 year old and 1 year old and really don’t have time to mess with accessories and whatnot on a daily basis so I like basic comfortable clothes that to me are cute and flattering.

      • doofus says:

her style is pretty basic, but it’s also stylish basic.

I won’t lie…I’ve bought a couple of pieces from her Kohl’s line and they’re cute. simple and pretty. BASIC.

      • Tiffany :) says:

IMO, she isn’t “basic”, but “classic”. She isn’t super trendy in her style, but I don’t think that is a bad thing.

      • Yup, Me says:

Exactly this. I think what is being called basic is what is also called classic when people are trying to suck up to someone. Her style will probably look not that much out of fashion years from now and will evolve only minimally. She will continue to work steadily and have a comfortable life and steady income. A lot of people would love to be basic like LC.

      • JenniferJustice says:

I liker her. I not only don’t think basic is bad, I prefer basic many times over those who try too hard. There is something to be said for simple and elegant – which Kate epitomizes. That’s a compliment not a diss. If anybody told me I remind them of Kate, I’d be flattered. She’s all class.

      • sally says:

Yeah I actually agree with all of you. She owns it. She is basic. Nothing wrong with being basic. I guess, my original point, which may be I didn’t make..was that she denied it in the or seemingly tried to deny it and was offended by the Allure article. She should’ve owned the title.

      • JennySerenity says:

Hear, hear! I’ve always like the girl. She stays in her lane, but hustles nonetheless. What’s so wrong with *basic*? Yes, I think it was a slam at LC from Allure (tacky) and no, I don’t think she handled it badly IMO.

    • Lizzie says:

I remember I wad 16 when she picked the boy over Paris. I remember Lisa Loves words even now….you’ll always be known as the girl who didn’t go to paris.

Lauren is the epitome of basic. Its who she is. Shes the girl who spends 10 minutes filtering a pic of her Starbucks. Own it LC!

  3. Slena says:

Did they lie?! She is basic as f!@#.

  4. Abbott says:

At least they’re still talking about her, right?

  5. Dawn says:

Well they are just callin it as they see it. Nothing wrong in that I say.

  6. Franziska says:

Being “basic” is what made her millions and millions of dollars and being in charge of her own company. She’s accessible, pretty without being too beautiful, and always looks put together. I’d much rather be basic that fake bohemian any day.

    • grimsfairytale says:

I wish I could upvote this post.
Completely agree. I like her, zooey deschanel, and taylor swift’s styles. It’s classic, clean, put together, and they’ll mostly never look back and wince at what they wore ten years from now.
Maybe I’m basic, then, but I don’t think there’s anything basic about classic clean lines. Were Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn “basic” then, too? Audrey gave many interviews about her love of clean, basic clothes and formed a relationship with Givechy BECAUSE of that simple taste.

  7. dorothyzbornak says:

Meh, I’ll take basic over the fugly fashion victims in the other three photos. Because 10 years from now, the “basic” look will still be classic, while that other shit will look dated as hell.

  8. Bridget says:

Jeez, so those of us that prefer simple and classic are Basic and unremarkable? Thanks Allure. I’ll take Basic over Vanessa Hudgens ANY DAY.

  9. Tess says:

She is the epitome of basic. She’s the human embodiment of taupe or beige. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just true. She is Kate’s twin though for sure!

  10. nicegirl says:

Love Basic and Unremarkable LC. Her clothes are wearable and her prettiness nearly attainable – at least for the rest of us unremarkable basics.

However, I’d bet her net worth at such a young age is rather remarkable . . . again, at least compared to the rest of us basics!

  11. lisa2 says:

I’m basic.. Proud of it too.

I much prefer a simple look to running and trying to kill myself following every trend that there is. mainly because as someone said Basic can be Classic. Trends look dated when the next trend turns up.

She seems to have made a good life for herself after her TV show. I think that is something young women can aspire to. Basic= Longevity.

    • Skittles4Marshawn says:

I’m not looking to lose my sh*t over a Pumpkin Spice Latte any time soon, but I’ll be damned if I’m not in the skinny jeans/ballet flats/IDGAF phase of my life.

  12. ojulia123 says:

    Basic = Classic

    (In my opinion, anyway…)

    • Allie says:

This. Classic is always in style.

    • Racer says:

But she’s not classic, she’s trendy. Big difference.

    • Tiffany :) says:

YES, I wrote essentially the same thing a minute ago before I saw your post. Classic isn’t a bad thing at all. I don’t think she is trendy, she takes classic shapes and adds modern touches, but overall her style is very classic. January Jones is someone whose style I would say is trendy.

  13. Nedsdag says:

I always thought of her as a bland non-entity, so Allure wasn’t too far from the truth.

  14. Suzanne says:

So classic = basic? I guess Audrey Hepburn was basic too? Get over yourself, Allure. Not everyone wants to (or can) pull off crazy trends.

  15. Hotpockets says:

I’ll take her basic style any-day over those dreadful high waist-ed shorts, ugg boots, pajamas as pants, and crop tops trending right now. Seriously, some of the stuff that becomes trendy seems like a practical joke plagued to the masses to see if it will become popular.

  16. happymama says:

Say what you will, this gal gave a brilliant response to a ridiculous question. She earned my respect. When asked her favorite “position”, she replied CEO.

  17. Dani says:

She may be basic but she has an actual career that probably generates more than any of us can count. I personally LOVE her basic style. It’s clean and accessible and classic. Nothing wrong with it, or the fact that she follows the ombre trend and drinks starbucks (btdt). Own it.

  18. peggy says:

Wait wasn’t she just on the cover of that magazine? Or am I confusing her with someone else?

    • Cady says:

Yes, she was just on the April 2014 cover of Allure and she’s been on it maybe two or three times before?

I’m a longtime Allure subscriber, she’s definitely had the cover more than once!

      • Hanna says:

So she has no style, but has made the cover multiple times? That shows you how little they respect their readers. They probably think their readers are basic bitches who’d love an LC cover. Allure needs to clean house. If there’s a rift between what they believe and what they sell, then find new staff or change direction. It’s degrading for everyone involved when a company can’t stand their own audience.

  19. sunsetsnow says:

I laughed when I saw this yesterday. Yes, they did want to put another lady (hmmm…sausage curls, wedges, and jeggings) but they were too scared to follow through. Hilarious!

  20. Chocolate bunny says:

    Truth hurts!

  21. kri says:

Ok, everyone. Sometimes basic is good. Let’s just be grateful that vanilla as she is, she does do some sort of work, unlike some people we could name (the K name is shrieking in my head). She is no Diane K, that is for damn sure, but I don’t want to flush her down a gold toilet. Let your Basic Banner fly, LC.

  22. eliza says:

I like her. She seems pleasant and her stuff at Kohl’s, while not my thing, is fresh and cute.

It seems all of us blondes with brown eyes and long hair are called basic and boring by everyone. *takes sip of Starbucks*

  23. Josefa says:

Did she tweet anything else about it? She doesn’t sound mad, actually. And I don’t think the description is particularly insulting, either, except for assuming she thinks she’s edgy. I like Lauren’s style, and I dress like that. Yeah, it’s basic, but I don’t care. And I DEFINITELY don’t think I’m any close to edgy.

  24. Nadine says:

I think lauren’s makeup/beauty website is starting to cut into Allure’s ad revenue. And they are getting nervous.

  25. Norman says:

I think Allure Magazine made it’s point when they called Lauren “basic” and for them that included being “remarkably unremarkable”, “plain” and having “sausage curls”, does she ware food on her hair? Only a few months ago she was on the front cover of the magazine and she was also promoting that issue and now she has been put down by Allure by writers that read as sophomoric and low brow. Lauren looks way better IMO than the people next to her in that article. If you Google Lauren Conrad you will find plenty of pictures of her in nice cloths and not the humdrum person that they make of her.

  26. Debsagrrl says:

    Who cares…

    I was always ‘Team Kristin’

  27. Edminster says:

I never watched her shows but I appreciate her “basic” style and affordable line. I’d call her style classic. She’s much more likable than most reality stars and young starlets (ex. Selena Gomez).

  28. Patty says:

Some of her clothes are very cute, but she is indeed pretty basic. It’s not a bad thing, she just is. And basic is not the same as classic. Someone can be basic and classic or classic and unique/remarkable. LC is basic in that there is nothing very remarkable, unique, or memorable about her – you could easily swap her out for someone with similar looks and no one would notice 🙂

  29. Meg says:

she is basic-she doesn’t do things revolutionary with fashion like lady gaga or rhianna
i’ve always gotten a stuck up vibe from her-not sure why her shows were big when i was in high school. it was just bitchy girls being bitchy to each other, why would i want to watch that? that’s not entertainment to me

  30. CAJ says:

They called her STYLE basic. Not her. So not sure what she’s huffy about. If she doesn’t like it, she can just change her clothing style.

But I tend to agree, I prefer basic (i.e. classic) over the others.

I also agree as a person, she is unremarkable.

  31. krtmom says:

Why is she famous anyway? Who cares???
