Amal Clooney in Alberti Ferretti & Gucci in NYC: retro ’70s fabulous or dated?

FFN_Amal_Clooney_TEACH_050115_51728282

Here are some photos of Amal Clooney out and about in NYC with her parents on Friday. She took them to see the hit musical Hamilton, the same musical that Madonna rudely interrupted with her texting and diva ‘tude. I’m guessing that Amal and her parents did not text during the show – it’s supposed to be one of the best musicals ever, a true hip-hop-opera about Alexander Hamilton. Amal’s parents and her sister Tala have been visiting her in NYC for much of the past week – George Clooney even took the whole Alamuddin family out to dinner one night.

As for Amal’s look here, once again, she’s stylin’. The white dress is Alberta Ferretti. The brown suede coat is Gucci – I once had a coat a lot like this, same shade of brown, also with a supple suede, only mine came from a thrift store and it ended at my hips. I miss that coat. I don’t know what happened to it. Amal’s purse is from Sarah’s Bag, a Lebanese designer. That’s nice, that she throws some support to designers from her home country.

Do you guys think that George Clooney picked out this ensemble for Amal? That’s what Us Weekly’s sources said this week, that George helps Amal choose all of her designer clothing. Now that I’ve had some time to reflect on it, I kind of think it makes sense. George’s sensibilities are very 1970s, post-Camelot, when Jackie Kennedy was Jackie Onassis. And if George is picking out Amal’s clothes, that might explain why she’s been doing so many Jackie O looks in New York.

Oh, and some people wonder if Amal and George will come to tonight’s Met Gala. They aren’t on the list as far as I’ve seen, but I am hoping they come. It’s arguably the biggest social event in New York every year. How could they not go?

    She looks really thin

    • Ethelreda says:

      She does.

I’m not one to concern troll when an already slim woman loses weight – there can be perfectly good reasons for it – but Amal does NOT look well. You can see it in her face. And she wasn’t always so thin – if you google ‘pre George’ pics of her you’ll see that she was certainly slim, but not skin and bones as she is now.

      • Felice. says:

I wasn’t trying to troll. I just made a comment.

      • Ethelreda says:

I know. I’m not accusing you of trolling – I’m agreeing with you!

I’m just pointing out that I’m not normally one to assume something is wrong when a woman loses weight, but in Amal’s case, I definitely think something isn’t right. Just look at her face.

      • Judyk says:

…and it’s her legs that I’m looking at…they look like the legs of a child.

        Great hair, pretty dress though.

      • Fa says:

I think she misunderstood the word famous, she thought that now she married a Hollywood star that she has to loose weight to fit into Hollywood life style, just my opinion & it is very sad & shame that she get paps the only thing tabloids report is her wardrobe, that’s her fault she stay under the radar if she want to be paps every single day, there are stars who stay stay under radar & come up promoting movie, if she carry like this people will compare her with Kim K

      • melodycalder says:

Agree. I saw a pic of her in pink pants last night and it just looks off. Unhealthy off. 🙁

      • epiphany says:

I don’t think she misunderstood the word “famous” at all. I think being famous is exactly want she wanted. I never saw a woman adapt so quickly to playing to the paps. She’s a natural and she’s loving it. It cracks me up when people insist she and George married for love. Please. Every photo op tells you why she married him. She’s reveling in the attention. He’s getting something too, of course, it’s just more…intangible.

    • Alex says:

Def looks like she’s entering eating disorder territory…

    • Celebwatch says:

She IS really thin, but I don’t think she looks like she has an ED at all and I really doubt she has one.

I also don’t think she weighed more than five pounds more than her current weight before she was with George anyway. And some women actually have a hard time keeping weight on and have to work at it a lot to do so.

      • Ankhel says:

Perhaps she is naturally skinny, but I doubt it. That depends on genetics, and you’d expect at least one of her parents to be thin. But, her oufit looks pretty good, I think.

  2. Kiddo says:

Her dad wants no part of this.

    • Snazzy says:

Hahah yes! I love the look on his face in these pics

    • Tessy says:

I know, he’s the only one not into the cameras. But Mom is enjoying it as much as Amal. That dress is pretty but kind of girlish on her, and it looks too cold out to be wearing it.

  3. Dawn says:

    They all look just fine.

  4. lkaye says:

Awful. She is beginning to remind me of kim kardashian (but with a job) with the way she dresses. At least she covers up.

    • Gea says:

I am still hopping that she will find her style. Otherwise, she is just dressed in expensive clothes, trying so hard to look so trendy with not so much of success. And she just deosnt look pertuculary comfortable and healthy lately. And her mom, om she is really beauty.

  5. Lucy says:

She has always given me the impression that she’s a woman who dresses for herself, so no, I don’t think he picked it. It’s very nice btw.

    • Sabrine says:

I love that coat. It’s gorgeous. Can the poor woman not even walk to her destination without being accused of looking for pap attention? This is what people do who have to get to places….they have to use sidewalks.

Why is her mom being criticized? It’s a MOM, and she isn’t trying to be a fashion plate, very cute mom btw.

      • smith says:

To answer your question – I direct you to her face. Yes, the “poor woman” ALWAYS looks so smug and self-important. The moment she steps outside you can see her eyes dart around …where are are the paps …where are the paps …oh THERE THEY ARE.

I walk around all day in Manhattan and let me tell you it’s not supposed to look like you’re creeping your way down a runway.

I’m sorry but she absolutely adores the “adoration” and instead of just getting on with her day and her use of the sidewalk, she turns it into …well THIS ^^^ (see above).

  6. LadyMTL says:

I like the coat and the shoes, but there’s something about a lace doily type of dress that makes me think of young girls, not mature women. I just find it jarring when a grown woman wears a dress that could also be worn by an 8 year old…not that it looks bad on Amal, but it bugs me too.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Her toddler taste is re asserting itself.

    • HH says:

I also think that the length of the dress isn’t helping. Above the knee isn’t a good look for a grown woman, particularly when it’s flowy dress. It gives the outfit a toddler feel.

    • Petrichor says:

Yup–my first thought was that it looks a lot like my First Communion dress, which was antique lace from 1904 when I wore it in 1983.

  7. dottie says:

Her coat is alright, but her mom’s looks like one Peggy Bundy would wear

  8. The Original G says:

Love the coat. Love the Gucci 70’s trend.

  9. GlimmerBunny says:

Love the outfit! I hope she does go to the Met Ball, she’s so glamorous.

    • bella says:

Would love to see them at MET too, but I’m curious about what you say…
Do you think Amal is glamorous?
I think her styling in the days leading up to the wedding and on her honeymoon were glamorous, but very off since…no?

      • conchitaaaa says:

I think her overall look is glamorous. It’s a package deal thingy, I may not always like her clothes but the girl has that hair and the makeup and the thin little body that works well with designer clothes and her style is sorta quirky overall and unpredictable so that adds something.

      • bella says:

i’ll give her the hair thing for sure…
        i don’t dislike her, so i hope i’m not misunderstood here…
but this is gossip site where we are allowed a bit to be judge-y, right?
        i just can’t with her…with him, either, marrying her…
it was SO abrupt his falling madly in love and rushing to the alter.
i continue to believe it’s a PR stunt to rebuild his image of being a silly womanizer.
        he’s running for office…i just know it…
and amal somehow fit nicely into his plan.
i don’t find her stylish or glamorous for that matter.
and any comparison to jackie o or carolyn bessette makes me cringe.

      • oneshot says:

@bella – if he is running for public office in the US, a foreign spouse of Middle Eastern descent is, er, not exactly going to go down well with the American public as a potential First Lady/partner.

      • Lorenzo says:

        @conchitaaa
        What package deal thingy?
Fake flop or pretender of the year?

Pretending to be a Humanitarian, pretending to save the world, pretending to model clothes, fake hair, fake lashes, fake nails, photshopped face/magically disappeared bags under her eyes, photoshopped legs/magically disappeared lumps and varicose veins…oh, I haven’t got so much time to sum up everything.

        Great catch 🙂

      • bella says:

        @oneshot
        i don’t agree.
a 1st lady of middle eastern descent with duel citizinship – i’m assuming she’ll become a u.s. citizen now that she’s married to one – is appealing to a huge u.s. base, i imagine.
not sure what you mean about descent.
do you think u.s. ciitizens have something against lebanese?

    • Felice. says:

She’s probably going. The twitter showed George’s seat.

  10. Shambles says:

All I have to say is that her hair is f@ckin’ luscious. I had a little hair accident yesterday, so I’m going to get a cut this afternoon and I’m skeeeerd. I hope my hair looks this luscious when I’m done. Wish me luck, celebitches.

    • Kiddo says:

      Hair accident?

    • LizLemonGotMarried says:

Oh no! What kind of accident? Good luck!

    • maeliz says:

Good luck. I recently had 12 inches cut. My butt to just bellow my shoulders. Was scared, but much more luscious now

    • Shambles says:

A small section at the front of my hair was accidentally set on fire with a butane lighter.

      *hides under covers in shame*

      • Kiddo says:

What exactly were you trying to set on fire? LMAO

ETA: Don’t tell me, I don’t want to be called as a witness.

      • Kitten says:

I’ve had this happen to me before. Hazards of weed-smoking. Also, celebitches have informed me that Amal wears hair extensions.

That coat is pimp as hell though, I must say…

    • Shambles says:

Lolol. The bf and I were smoking wax concentrates, which involves a glass piece being heated up with a butane lighter. He leaned the wrong way, I leaned the wrong way, and viola. Hair fire.

ETA @ Kiddo, oops, I typed before I saw your ETA. You’re screwed. Now you know. 😉

ETA @ Kitten, I knew you would understand. *stoner five*
      And that coat is ballin’.

  11. smee says:

I personally don’t understand wearing a short, shear fabric dress, bare legs, and sandals with a suede coat. I’d like her dress & sandals fine once it’s summer, altho it’s a bit girly for her – she looks best in more sophisticated clothes, imo.

    • Kiddo says:

Yeah, I’m not digging the season mix.

    • Lama Bean says:

      I agree. Seems off.
I thought I liked her sandals, then realized they remind me of house arrest bracelets.

    • Christin says:

I only came here to see if anyone else noticed the sheer dress / suede (heavier) coat combo. Nice individual pieces, but looks seasonally ‘off’ when put together.

  12. MrsBB says:

She looks fine, I am more concerned about her mother who seems to like weird suits/pant and combining tops in the same colour/fabric. I recently saw a picture somewhere else and she was dressed head-to-toe in shiny green fabric. Maybe George could look into that.

  13. belle de jour says:

I like the *idea* of this look – something freer teamed with something more structured – and I also truly love seasonal mixing, especially with light white or dove grey floaty material + heavy winter or black tights juxtaposition. But the length of her drop skirt – and the ornamentation – seem off.

Very smart brown coat, though. Cute but not too little-girly. Chic Mary Tyler Moore. Great color.

That covering her mother is wearing, on the other hand, looks like a Chico’s luxe line DIY laser-cut project come back from the dead of seasons past, with a vengeance. I would hate to work in Coat Check and see that thing coming towards me.

  14. celine says:

She’s ugly as all h*ll, but she’s got hair to die for.

  15. Suzanne says:

I think I’m OVER Amal… She’s starting to annoy me with the constant look of being “camera conscious” at all times. She toes in when she walks…which works if you’re on a runway…but everyday strolling makes you look knock-kneed. The extensions are back in… Her mother is way better looking then she is…and I think Amal is attractive in her darkness. But Mom is CUTE!

  16. Dani says:

She seems so…smug. She loves the attention, it’s unmistakable. I do love her outfit though.

    • meme says:

She does seem smug. Super smug and she uses NYC sidewalks like it’s her personal runway. And she’s alarmingly thin.

  17. Zombie Shortcake says:

    http://ny.racked.com/2015/4/9/8376969/amal-clooney-columbia-law-professor

Not sure if this has come up on other threads, but I thought it’s interesting.
I’d been waiting to read student opinion of her lectures and there is a gag order! What BS

    • Christin says:

I recall it came up a few weeks ago in the comments. Really interesting that PAYING students are forbidden to talk.

  18. Jayna says:

I’m over Amal myself, and I stood up for her and gave her a chance for quite a while. I’ve never seen someone love the camera so much in such an obvious way and all of her endless fashion pap walks. She is loving it way too much.

And I don’t see her as a high-powered lawyer that they try to make her out to be over and over in the press ad nauseum. She’s attached to some cases, not lead counsel, and the firm keeps her on now because it’s good publicity.

And, no, George doesn’t pick out her clothes. You still see that she has her own style since the very beginning, some of it quirky and not great but definitely her style, just now more expensive choices. At least, she is keeping some individuality as she is working it for all of her pap walks.

    • sills says:

You took the words out of my mouth. For a serious and important international lawyer who’s too serious and important for all that Hollywood nonsense, she sure does loooooooooove those paps’ cameras!

    • Christin says:

I stand by my previous gut feeling that this is a new version of Tommy Boy and his couch jumping, “I found a woman” ruse. It’s just not clear what the end game is. I think he found a fame hungry young attorney to help shore up his public image, and it’s spun out of control.

At first, I thought George was running the show, but I think she is pulling the strings. And he looks absolutely exhausted.

  19. Dr.Funkenstein says:

    Way too thin.

  20. Shelly says:

well…I’m gonna say it…someone has to…crack is whack.

  21. Greek chic says:

Outfits like this confuse me. It is hot enough for bare legs and sandals but also cold for a coat? I like the items though.
She’s looking really frail these days.

  22. Ginger212 says:

She’s a 34 year old professional woman, she should bring her hemline down already, is she trying for the Ally McBeal look?

    • oneshot says:

She’s not in court/at work though, why does it matter how short her dress is?

also is it just me, or are US lawyers super stuffy and conservative about what women wear on their off time? I saw an interview by a young Hong Kong-based lawyer on a beauty blog where one of the pics had her wearing shorts (not tiny or tight ones, just regular ones, and the pic wasn’t ‘sexy’ posed or anything) and a whole host of people tore into her in the comments for it, saying she was ‘unprofessional’ for wearing shorts and putting a picture online.

I can’t imagine that mentality prevailing where I am, any client who got huffy and tried to pull out over perfectly normal clothing on an attorney’s off hours social media would pretty much have no attorney to represent them.

      • JenniferJustice says:

Most are conservative with their style of dress, yes. I wouldn’t say stuffy, because most female attorneys dress down when they’re not working, but going promiscuous and showing lots of skin is a Never! Dressing down means jeans, bohemian skirts, but never mini-skirts or shorts unless they are at their own cottage. And I totally get it. Clients would not get huffy over their attorney’s attire after hours. It’s more about their reputation among colleagues and the public. The legal profession in the U.S. is still highly traditional and old fashioned. We still use Garamond for Pete’s sake!

  23. oneshot says:

if those really are hair extensions, then they’re fantastic extensions – they look like her real hair. (speaking of which, what’s the evidence saying they are extensions, have we seen any unintentional weft exposure like on Catherine Cambridge?)

70s style was never my thing but she looks ok I guess.
