Julianne Moore in Givenchy at the Met Gala: striking or disappointing?

Julianne Moore wears a lot of Tom Ford, who tends to put her in matronly, unflattering looks. So at least she didn’t wear Ford to the Met Gala and switched it up somewhat in black Givenchy. She was accompanied by their creative director Riccardo Tisci, Kanye West’s BFF and the man responsible for Kim Kardashian’s 2013 floral couch dress. This year, Tisci wasn’t quite as passive aggressive with his muse. Her black gown had a classic shape with some contemporary details, like small diamond cutouts along the bodice and sequin fringe across the bustline. Something nice: Moore looks lovely. However she could have looked so much better. This looks like a gown for a lesser awards ceremony, not the Met Gala. At least it’s not actively awful.

Jessica Chastain was in a custom gold Givenchy gown that made her look like a classic screen siren. I love her hair, makeup and that incredible gown. I can only imagine the amount of work that went into making it. It would have been nice to see more of the China theme, but Chastain gets a pass for otherwise looking like perfection. This is one of the best looks I’ve ever seen on her.

Dianna Agron was similarly impressive in a white Tory Burch one shoulder gown featuring crane applique along the skirt. This was a smart way to incorporate the theme in that Cranes are central to Chinese mythology. She had understated styling and let the dress stand out. This is a win for Dianna.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Katie Holmes

Here is Tory with the other two ladies whom she designed for, Maggie Q and Melanie Laurent. They all look incredible while subtly incorporating the theme. I’m a new fan.

Look at Maggie Q working that sideview with her fiance, Dylan McDermott. Look at how sympatico they are.

Dianna is boring as usual. Chastain has worn that dress a thousand times. Moore looks good but kinda forgettable, glad she’s not wearing Tom Ford.

    • Shelley says:

You pretty much summed it up. But I must say Jessica’s make up and hair looked amazing. She usually looks more bland.

  2. Jenns says:

How many gold dresses does Jessica Chastain own?

  3. Jayna says:

I’m waiting for the glorious Ivanka.

    These, all meh.

  4. Oobejabbawonka says:

Quick question – where does Maggie Q keep her internal organs? Her entire torso is slimmer than my thigh! Apart from that, I love these dresses – classy and gorgeous!

  5. GlimmerBunny says:

Chastain looks MAJOR! Such a sexy, flattering old-Hollywood look.

  6. msd says:

Meh, she’s great but the dress is a snooze. I can’t see any attempt at the night’s theme other. At least she wasn’t dressed for Vegas..

Zhang Ziyi was my personal fave. She won’t grab headlines but she looked elegant and interesting, and was on-theme in a classy, relaxed way.

    • LAK says:

Loved Zhang Ziyi’s dress. And the back of Gong Li’s dress. Fan Bingbing’s dress and cape are epic.

    • siri says:

Ziyi is my favorite, too. Carolina Herrera nailed it. Simple elegance is hard to do, it seems. And I really liked Karolina Kurkowa’s sexy red dress. From head to toe perfection.

  7. Kaya says:

I like how generally, in the Met Gala, everyone who incorporated the theme of Chinese culture in their styling did so without any offensive stereotypes or cultural appropriation. Katy Perry could learn a few things.

    • LAK says:

Except for the people who incorporated poppies into it. That’s a major insult.

      • DarkSparkle says:

Why is that an insult? (genuine question)

      • Pip says:

I think it’s basically because of the link between poppies and opium, and then in turn the horrific opium wars between the British and Chinese. It is a very weird choice because they’re not really synonymous with China in any other way that I know of, and even recently it’s been an issue (e.g. the British PM was asked not to wear a remembrance poppy to China for this very reason).

  8. tracking says:

Moore’s dress is gorgeous, but it needed the sweep of a train and she needed a more glamorous hairstyle to really pull off this look.

  9. Greek chic says:

Maggie Q. looks pretty but so thin. I can count her bones.

  10. Damn says:

Asian ladies were the best dressed.

  11. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    Maggie and Dylan look yummy.

  12. Lucy says:

I love all of these! My favorites are Jessica and Dianna.

  13. Maggi says:

I’m in love with Maggie Q’s dress.

Fan Bingbing epitomizes gaudy and nouveau riche in all of her red carpet appearances. I’m embarrassed that people consider her bloated plastic surgery face to be the face of
    China.

  14. lucy2 says:

I like Julianne’s dress, but it’s a bit boring for the Met Gala.
Dianna’s is pretty but not terrible exciting.

  15. A mascarada says:

Maggie Q’s dress is perfection on her! Love the color, the details, everything.

  16. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    So dull I’m almost mad.

  17. Pumpkin Pie says:

If those are cranes, love the print on Diana’s dress. I absolutely love it. But they could have used a different kind of fabric.
