Miley Cyrus adopted a Persian kitten but won’t properly clean its eyes

Mornings with @shantiombb

Miley Cyrus adopted a Persian kitten a few weeks ago. She swiftly crafted the cat into an internet star, even going so far to create its own Instagram page. The page is authentic (not a fan imitation). Miley crossposts and links the cat’s account all the time from the official Miley account. Miley appears to be enamored with this cat, just like every other pet she’s owned.

Miley’s love for animals is one thing I do appreciate about her. But even I’m starting to realize that Miley’s a bit of an animal hoarder. She currently has several dogs and a pet pig. Miley only just sang a sad song for her dead blowfish. Over the past few years, Miley lost a few dogs, Floyd (allegedly to a coyote) and Lila (after one of Miley’s other dogs attacked her). Miley had enough sense to give away a bandaid puppy that her mom gave her after Floyd died. But Miley still keeps piling on the pets. Is she really able to care for all of them?

Here’s why I ask. This is a photo of the new Persian kitty right after Miley adopted it.

Break the Internet.

Here’s the kitty a few days after adoption. There’s a crust accumulation forming below its tear ducts. Many Persian cats need their eyes cleaned on a daily basis. The breed’s unusual face shape causes a great deal of tearing and drainage. Daily cleaning clears away crust buildup and prevents infection. Even I (as a crazy dog lady) am aware of the simple cleaning process. Is Miley cleaning her Persian cat’s eyes at all? Her Instagram commenters keep warning her to do so, but the crust grows worse with each photo. You may not want to look any further. This poor cat.

It hurts to leave you.

Its coat is starting to look rough, too. Poor kitty.

    • Shambles says:

I really don’t understand how she can look at that poor little kitten and think all that eye gunk is normal. It’s truly beyond me. I cleaned my cat’s eye boogers religiously when he was a baby, and his were tiny.

      • Samtha says:

Yeah–it seems like common sense would tell her to wipe that off. It’s not like you’d have to do a lot of research to figure it out!

    • Lori says:

Yeah you have to keep up on that. I am fostering a stray cat that had 3 kittens in my laundry room 3 weeks ago. Mama is a long haired cat, although no specific breed. and the kitties are too. I have to wipe everyone’s eyes at least once a day. With just warm water on cotton balls. It does make a huge difference. Only takes seconds and can save you a lot of vet trips.

  2. NewWester says:

Why don’t celebrities like Miley, Justin Beiber, Kardashian/Jenners etc who don’t have the time or in some cases intelligence to take care of a animal just go out and get a pet rock? They would be able to bond with something that they can relate to

    • Linn says:

Or at least hire somebody to take care of your pets properly. It’s not like she couldn’t affort it.

      • crtb says:

        ITA – hire someone

      • qwerty says:

Yeah I thought for sure she had someone to look after the animals. I mean round the clock, not just when she’s gone on tour etc… there’s no way she can keep an eye on all of them. There’s now way she can even walk all her dogs daily. Unless they go in the garden…? Uh.

      • laura in LA says:

        Yeah, hire me!

Seriously, though, who’s really taking care of all these pets? Sometimes I’m afraid this job is handed off to some assistant, not necessarily anyone who knows how to care for them or has much interest in or incentive for doing so.

As for the celebrities themselves, taking IG photos constantly is not giving these animals what they need. It sure does get people like Miley the attention she craves, but what happens to these pets when they’re no longer new and cute?

Her heart’s in the right place, but the mind’s too scattered.

    • TeaAndSympathy says:

That is the perfect suggestion, NewWester. If she was in Australia and posting such photos, she’d have already been visited by the RSPCA, directed to immediately attend to the kitten’s eyes and had follow-up visits to monitor the situation by now. I can tell you that (in Sydney, at least) they are extremely strict about such matters, particularly if one is unashamedly sharing such photos on social media. Should the offender not comply, the animal(s) is removed. And good luck having it returned. Miley is an idiot.

      • Tifygodess says:

Exactly!!! I wish we had better rules and regulations here in the US. I am so sick of seeing people treat animals like they are some kind of accessory or toy and then dumping them off when they are bored or the animal loses its “cuteness”. I also think we need much harsher sentencing for people who abuse animals. Plain and simple. I hate the mentality “oh it’s just a dog , or cat….” No it’s a living ,feeling, breathing thing – just like you- and has just as much right to life as you do. It’s not a piece of property. Miley needs to set an example and treat all her animals properly. If she can’t then she needs to home them to someone who can.

      • Ange says:

I wish they were that good but I just alerted the RSPCA to a family who lost their kitten in a very sketchy way (third cat in as many years) that they were on the lookout for another through them and was basically told ‘yeah we can’t stop people from owning pets.’ Yes you can, you can say no when they come to the shelter! It was really sad and yes they have another kitten. One of the comments under the photo of it was ‘oh will they drag this one around by the tail?’

I hate people. The only comfort I get is that we just rescued a second cat so we kind of evened it out.

    • JENNA says:

      Word.

    • Hawkeye says:

Agreed. I think many of them get pets just for the pictures. On a sort of related note, we increased our cat pack from 5 to 7 last night! We adopted a pair of kitten best friends after a short fostering stint.

      • qwerty says:

        @Hawhkeye
Awesome 😀 I love it when animal BFFs are adopted together <3

      • Hawkeye says:

@qwerty we had 4 boys who fear and admire an alpha, ALPHA female, so we were worried about how she would react to the kittens, but since the rescue needed a temporary home for a very short time while they tried to find a longer term foster home, we decided we could make it work. We were completely surprised to find that the kittens LOVE the alpha, and that she has taken them under her wing and made them her little minion proteges. In fact, they have managed to rope her into playing with the rest of the pack. So we were like, well, seems like it’s meant to be, welcome home kids!

    • Gabriela says:

Yeah, right! Does anyone remember Kim’s persian kitty Mercy??? She pimped it just like Miley is doing.

What happened to Mercy, after all????

  3. Tiffany27 says:

    Poor kitty. It looks uncomfortable.

  4. Daz London says:

JFC how hard is it for her to pay someone to do this ????

  5. lucy2 says:

Poor kitty! She needs to taken proper care, or give the cat to someone who can.
LOL at the “in the studio” photo, the cat looks miserable. I would be too, listening to her warbling dumb songs for hours.

  6. paola says:

I think no one told her she had to do it.

    • Linn says:

But she must at least realize that the kitten’s eyes look different and that this can’t be healthy. If she doen’t know what to do about it than ask someone of go see a veterinarian.

    • paola says:

She probably thought the cat would learn how to clean himself. I’m sure she is a pet lover and she’ll do soemthing about it soon enough.

      • Kitten says:

Maybe, but I believe that if you get a purebred pet you have an obligation to research any special care that the breed may require.

Just looking at that cat’s eyes should tell her that something is not right.

      • Marty says:

Exactly. I got a new Kitten a couple of weeks ago and even I have to clean his eyes ever few days. It’s just common sense.

    • Tifygodess says:

I would think common sense would be enough. But apparently common sense is a rarity in our society as of late.

    • qwerty says:

Before I took in my first foster dog I spent hours researching dog care and diet online. What to feed, potentially harmful foods, how often to walk, nearest vets, proper collars, harnesses and leashes, everything I could think of. Then I bookmarked it all and came back to it when I had doubts. It’s not difficult. If she has the internet, she has all the resources she needs. And she sure as hell doesn’t need anyone to tell her that, she’s a grown woman.

      • laura in LA says:

        Another “pet” peeve of mine…

Did Miley really adopt this kitten from a shelter or rescue? Or did she buy from a breeder? This may seem like semantics to some, but there’s a big difference.

And when someone obviously has enough money to purchase a purebred pet and do research, but then feeds it crap food (like the guy in that Beneful lawsuit), or otherwise neglects it?

        This really pisses me off.

      • laura in LA says:

        qwerty, you’re a good foster parent 😉

  7. Belle Epoch says:

That is really disturbing!!!! How can she claim to love her kitty so much when it is obviously neglected and looking worse and worse? Somebody call Pet Protective Services!

    Miley is NOT CUTE.

    • Camille (The Original) says:

I have to admit, seeing that kitten in that poor state made me cry. Now I really, really dislike this untalented twit.

  8. swack says:

I don’t understand why people (not just celebs) who have jobs that keep them away from home for the majority of the time have pets. They are not there to enjoy them or take care of them. This baffles me. And you should be finding out about the care of any animal that you take in.

    • qwerty says:

Eh, I don’t know. As they say in the foundation I work with, all day alone at home is better than all day alone in a shelter. So if we’re talking adopted animals, I disagree.

      • swack says:

I see what you are saying. I’m really talking about those who leave for a week or more at a time. If the owner comes home at night at least the animal is getting some attention and is not alone for days on end. Guess I should have been more specific in what I said.

  9. JudyK says:

At this point, kitty needs a vet to properly clean those eyes.

Pet hoarding channels the same insecurities and obsessions that other hoarding does. I have a friend who is an animal lover but also a hoarder, is up all night and sleeps all day and uses pee pads all over her house for her many dogs. She once had a beautiful home that was immaculate, but now no one, including me, is allowed inside.

    • Crumpet says:

Oh no, that is so sad. Pet hoarding is even more horrifying than regular hoarding, because the pets suffer terribly as well.

      • Jadzia says:

It is the worst. My mother had 64 cats before she died. (I think–that’s how many her husband said he counted before losing track). She’s been gone since March 2014 and still nobody is allowed in the house. I get pretty rage-strokey thinking about it, both because of the animals of course and because my parents singlehandedly destroyed what was a lovely, lovely home, and someday it is going to be up to us “kids” to get the cat pee out of the subfloors.

    • swack says:

I agree. I have two cats and would love to have more but the two of them take up my attention.

  10. Amelia says:

I also appreciate that she’s an animal lover, but caring about the welfare of animals does not necessarily mean you are the right person to provide that care.
Donate to animal charities, promote adoption/rescue centres, but for God’s sake Miley, know when enough is enough and stop collecting these wonderful creatures like trophies when they clearly aren’t benefiting.
    /rant.

  11. PP says:

Call Karl Lagerfeld. He knows how to take care of a cat. Choupette is beautiful.

    • INeedANap says:

You know, as much of an a$$ as he is, he really does take care of Choupette. And he knows his limits — Choupette has a few round-the-clock caretakers for cleaning and stuff like this.

      • oneshot says:

You know perfectly well Choupette would snatch his wig if he didn’t keep her in the princess-like splendour she deserves, complete with 24/7 minions staff.

  12. Naddie says:

Her “love” for pets seems like everything she does: a cheesy, tacky display of a childish urge.

    • littlestar says:

Totally. I looked at the cat’s instagram page and it was very immature and childish. I get that some people create accounts for the pets and I am good with that (because I LOVE animals and follow a few on Instagram myself), but Miley’s is downright bizarre. Half the pictures of the cat are photo-shopped.

  13. JudyK says:

Oh gross…the hair under her arms in the orange top! Apparently, she can’t even take care of her own grooming, let alone the kitty’s.

  14. Nayru says:

I did not know. I thought tear stain was normal and only needed to be cleaned infrequently for some animals. That being said I wouldn’t want a pet that suffered from that, and if I did own one I would be cleaning it regularly because I can’t stand the look of it.

  15. Katydid20 says:

Honest question but are Persians unable to clean their own eyes? I’ve only ever owned shorthairs but they have that same eye goop and take care of it themselves. One would get POed if I tried to clean it for her.

    • Seapharris7 says:

Certain breeds, like Persians, have a “flat face” – so the boogers/water/drainage doesn’t immediately leave the tear duct area. Some dogs have this issue too. For the most part, a normal attentive pet owner should notice after a few days of build up that obviously the animal needs help cleaning themselves. It’s simply warm water on a clean cloth or cotton ball, wipe, repeat as necessary.

  16. hadlyB says:

I have several persians, one is white and he stains very easily. I have to clean his face several times a day. After work I come home and his face is a mess. It’s natural in some to have a lot of staining and others not so much. My other persian is cream and has very little staining. She only needs her eyes wiped rarely in the mornings and is perfect, some just have bad eye crusts and need more care.

There are products out there she can use if she would care to look them up; groomers use them, you can buy them etc. But I get my cats groomed every 2 months on the dot but they still need up keep at home, these cats are no joke to mess around with. If you want a lazy cat get a shorthair not a persian. Or a short hair persian. Poor kitty, it can get an infection or grow fungus on its face if she doesn’t clean it properly.

Karl has 2 full time groomers / assistants for his cat and believe me if I had the money I’d do the same! At least one to just keep them clean and pretty every day. She has the money so pay someone 70k a year to clean your cat, geez. I know several girls who’d do that job pretty easily, and would do a great job at it from my own grooming place. Ugh rich celebs irk me when they don’t take care of their pets.

    • Kitten says:

Wow, I had no idea that Persians were so high-maintenance!

    • swack says:

Question: Don’t they also need to be brushed? Curious as I only have short haired cats.

      • oneshot says:

Yes, they do! They need to be brushed, my neighbour growing up had Persians and she brushed them every other day, though I’ve seen cat carers recommend once or twice a week sometimes. If you don’t, their fur gets matted and that is not good.

Persians are beautiful cats, and really well suited to being apartment/indoor cats in my experience – they’re not the crazy balls of energy that, say, Bengal cats can be. But that doesn’t mean you can get them and then leave them to take care of themselves, especially as kittens.

    • LNG says:

I had no idea that there was such a thing as a cat groomer!! I thought they took care of that on their own. From what I know of cats (and I don’t have one), that would not be my top choice job (although for 70K…..)! Don’t they generally hate water?

      • imqrious2 says:

My three cats loved to jump in the tub/shower with me! They also loved drinking water from the faucet in the sink. Good memories 🙂

  17. Greek chic says:

Miley looks dirty and unwashed all the time so I doubt that she cleans her kitty.
Its adorable though. So fluffy and cute.

  18. Kitten says:

My younger Scottish Fold has a mild recurring eye infection in his left eye that results is occasional leaking and staining. It seems to happen most often when he first wakes up, but then there are days that his face looks completely fine.

The first time I noticed it, I immediately took him to the vet and after she did a few tests, said that it was just very mildly inflamed and gave me some ointment to apply.
Every time after I applied the ointment he would rub it off of his eyes with his paw. Eventually, I coned him up for a few days so he couldn’t touch his face and the infection went away. Now, the infection is back again.

He seems healthy, happy, and normal in every way except for the leaky left eye. I still have medicine left which I could apply but it doesn’t seem to be a permanent cure. I wonder if this is just something he’ll have to live with?

    Any advice is appreciated!!

    • hadlyB says:

One of my cats has a low immune system. Kitty “herpes” so he gets sick a lot, is prone to eye infections, colds, etc. I get the eye drops not the ointment and use for 2 weeks and it clears up. But I also give him lysine tab treats to boost his immune system and in his food – it helps prevent him from getting sick so often.

Doesn’t cure it but helps. I also looked into better food, no dyes, less chemicals, wash all their blankets, toys etc. And no tap water but distilled water – I read that helps with tear staining so far it helps but not completely wiped it away but its not as bad. Took about a month to see results. Not sure if you have teat staining or just infection? And I use Eye Envy as well to keep his eye clean.

If it keeps up, I really suggest a second or third opinion, sometimes you need a different vet especially with an exotic pet. Have you looked on some cat boards or exotic cat boards sometimes they are most helpful when trying out different things/products etc.

      • Kitten says:

Thank you so much! I didn’t know any of these things.
I’ll stop by Unleashed after work today and get the lysine tablets and Eye Envy and I’ll start using distilled water.

Are the eye drops you use prescription drops? I bet that would work better than the ointment because he wouldn’t be able to rub it off.

      • hippo says:

Make sure that the drops go directly on the eyeballs. I had a foster with recurring infections, and thought that I could get away with his twice daily drops by squeezing some out onto the corners of his eyes and mushing his eyelids about so help spread it. It didn’t really work, and ended up having to hold his eyes open and putting a drop directly on. This cat had prescription drops both times, but the second one that was more effective had an anti-inflam effect.

    • Adrien says:

      Maybe he has feline herpes.

      • Kitten says:

Well he’s only a year and a half and he’s been going to the vet since he was newborn. I assume they would have been able to diagnose herpes, right?

      • Marty says:

Not necessarily. One of my mom’s cats was taken to the vet regularly but only diagnosed with a mild case of feline herpes after a year or so. Since it’s genetic, it might not show up immediately. He takes oral medication, but still needs his eye cleaned everyday because it drains so much.

      • hippo says:

Is he allowed outside at all? Possibly could have contracted cat flu (herpes is a strain of it) whilst at the vets perhaps? One of mine contracted it after I took home a foster cat from the pound and only quarantined him for a week, and she is now a carrier. She could potentially be a carrier for life 🙁

    • Hawkeye says:

Poor kitty! It might be feline pink eye; one of our cats had teary eyes but no other symptoms, and it turned out he had pink eye in both eyes. It could also be an upper respiratory infection, or just plain old dry eye if the kitty’s a senior. I would call the vet to ask about using the left over medication. Good luck!

      • Kitten says:

When I first got him he developed pink eye AND a respiratory infection within a few days. The vet said he likely contracted it while still with the breeder.

It just seems strange that it comes and goes, you know? And it’s only the left eye.

Thank you all for the advice. Really really appreciate it!!

      • Hawkeye says:

I just remembered that the vet told us that cats can damage tear ducts when they scrap, so maybe he has a torn tear duct? If only they could talk and tell us. I hope whatever the problem is that it’s an easy fix!

    • Seapharris7 says:

Kitten, not to worry you, but did your vet test for anything like Feline Luekemia/HIV or anything that might be compromising the kitty’s immune system? You mentioned a “upper respiratory infection/pink eye”… All of those things are highly contagious, and “breeder” makes me imagine a lot of cats cohabiting.

      • Ange says:

Yeah those two things combined do kinda sound like flu or something – my new kitten came with flu and a nice bit of eye gunk and a respiratory infection. He’s fine now and it didn’t even affect the other cat but we’re aware it may reoccur for the rest of his life.

The lysine is a good bit of advice Hadly, thanks for that.

  19. Adrien says:

I thought Choupette also has leaky eyes too and she has personal groomers to take care of her.

  20. Crumpet says:

If she can’t take care of the kitten’s eyes and coat she needs to arrange for it to go to a groomer on a regular basis. I suppose she will wait until the poor things eyes are crusted shut before she does anything.

  21. lisa says:

    correction

    miley loves buying pets

she doesnt love taking care of them

  22. snowflake says:

I can’t believe she’s cheesing it up with the cat photos, but can’t be bothered to clean her eyes. It’s a kitten, it would be simple to do. That poor cat, apparently Miley is too immature to take care of a pet.

  23. Seapharris7 says:

As an animal lover, a rescuer, and the crazy one who will clean my animals “eye boogers” constantly (my family always jokes about this) & anyone else’s animal for that matter! – Even if Miley doesn’t care for animals, why on earth does she not clean the cat up before taking pictures?
I’m not dumb enough to think she doesn’t take 100 of the same “selfie” before deciding which one she’ll post. But obviously she only cares how she looks, not the cat. Poor baby.

  24. Amy says:

Ugh scrolling down just made me mad. Stupid bitch. This is why I hate celebs who do this nonsense of Instagram pages for pets and singing mournful songs to their deceased pet who never really gave enough of a damn to care for the pet in the first place.

Pets are not people, if you agree to r their caretaker then you owe them that care for the best of your ability. Miley isn’t a child or a homeless individual who can’t afford to care for herself or her pet. She’s an adult woman with millions, I’m sick of her if she’s so eager to post pet pics while even her Instagram followers warn her about that cat’s eyes and she ignores them. Soon she’ll be singing a ballad for her poor dead Persian.

  25. oneshot says:

Idiot. She has all this money and can’t be bothered to hire someone to take care of that poor kitten, if she herself is too much of a lazy ass to do it.

It’s not even like Sienna Miller’s Newfoundland situation, because at least that lady did the right thing and placed her dog in the care of someone who could look after her and provide the care she needed. Miley…..appears to only be interested in instagramming her pet, not caring for it.

  26. Elly says:

i hate that people still breed “oh look so tiny and cute” cats and dogs with flat faces and tiny noses (hello respiratory problems!). That is not normal, “we” have done this to them over decades just because “we” think it looks prettier. It is cruel.
If you buy one of those unlucky breeds you have to know beforehand that you now have to play nurse. Cyrus isn´t the only one not knowing that certain breeds need special care and likely end up having health problems.
“Normal” cats can do everything without human help. As it should be! If an animal (especially a carnivore) needs a human to clean its eyes then something is very very wrong.

    • MBP says:

      Bingo.

    • Nayru says:

I’m going to have to wholeheartedly agree with this statement!

    • Ankhel says:

Hear, hear. Pets should not be bred to look like human babies – chubby, with big eyes, tiny noses and tiny mouths on flat faces. It’s creepy! And they get sick and injured a lot.

  27. smh says:

There’s no reason a person can’t do her homework before bring a helpless animal home.

  28. LA Juice says:

I dream of the day when you have to qualify to adopt pets, much like you’d have to qualify to adopt children. Whether you think that is extreme or not, you can’t argue against the logic: Whether a child or an animal: all are small beings whose lives and well being is directly in the hands of the caretaker. an inept caretaker can cause as much pain and suffering in an animal as a child, and it should not be allowed.

    • Isadora says:

I wholeheartedly agree with you. It will never happen of course (because there’s no way you could do this when you breed and slaughter animals for food), but it’s a good thought.

  29. Me too says:

Wait….. Is there some kind of cat d
