Angelina Jolie distracts Madonna with a decoy baby on SNL

On Saturday Night Live, Madonna and Angelina Jolie sparred on Weekend Update. Really, Abby Elliot (as Angelina Jolie) and Kristen Wiig (as Madonna) sparred on Weekend Update. The fight was about adopted babies, of course, with “Angelina” taunting “Madonna” about an island filled with babies, then distracting “Madonna” with a decoy tot. It was pretty funny.

Abby Elliot does a really good Angelina Jolie, I have to admit. She just gets the facial expression just right – something about the eyebrows – but Angelina doesn‘t stand around with her hand on her hip. Abby should work on that for Angelina’s next appearance. And even though I’m a big fan of Kristen Wiig, she needs to work on her Madonna a bit more. More with the faux English accent, and she should make “Madonna” have more pronounced cheekbones. The Huffington Post has more:

During “Saturday Night Live’s” Weekend Update, Madonna and Angelina Jolie sparred in a baby-off.

Madonna was just denied a second child from Malawi while Jolie has adopted kids from Cambodia, Vietnam and Ethiopia.

Madonna, played by Kristen Wiig, told Seth Meyers, “I love babies, but I especially love getting babies from crazy places.”

Moments later Jolie, played by Amy Elliot [sic], interrupts and challenges Madonna over who has babies from more exotic locales.

[From Huffington Post]

Even though SNL did it all in a hilarious way, the Madonna-Angelina comparisons on mainstream news have been pissing me off. It’s all fun and games until someone doesn’t follow the rules – which, for the record, Angelina has always done. All three of her foreign adoptions have followed both the letter and spirit of international adoption laws and State Department guidelines. Madonna, not so much. So what’s the comparison?

This sketch was hysterical. These people need to stop collecting babies like others collect Hummel figures.

  2. Fesa says:

Oh Kaiser. I may have to stop reading your posts on anything Angelina because I keep picturing you with a shrine to Brangelina in your closet and a pcture of Shiloh in your wallet. Stop it!

  3. geronimo says:

Kaiser – you’re having a sense of humour failure. It’s funny! Doesn’t matter if the adoptions were above board or not, AJ provides the material, can’t expect comedians not to run with it.

  4. Annie says:

The only comparison being the adoption factor. Which, I really don’t like that people are turning it into a bad thing.

It’s a beautiful thing if a child can get a more fortunate life.

“Collecting babies”? How about giving a child a chance at life? It’s not as if she’s an animal hoarder who’s incapable of taking care of them. People have 14 natural born kids, and no one makes a fuss, but she takes children out of really unfortunate circumstances and tries to give them a higher quality at life, and suddenly, she’s a Baby Hoarder!

  5. Sauronsarmy says:

Does Amy Elliot have a twitter or something? I hope she post her hate mail.

  6. Tony says:

    Great clip. Thanks!

  7. Bodhi says:

I thought that skit was funny as hell!

  8. Mairead says:

geronimo, ah now be nice. Kaiser was just distracted by thoughts of bacon 😉

  9. Bina says:

“14 babies naturally and no one makes a fuss”

Exactly what planet do you live on?

  10. Annie says:

    This one.

Look at the Duggars or better yet, your world.

I’m not saying I agree with it, but tons of people have been having tons of kids for decades now and no one really turns it into this whole “baby collecting” business.

Heck, the Duggars got a show out of it.

But try to take a child out of less fortunate circumstances because you have the means, and you’re a baby hoarder.

That is not to say that the skit wasn’t hilarious. It’s just getting a little old.

  11. kiki says:

    AAAAGGGGGG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its ABBY Elliot NOT AMY… cheezzz
and she is 2nd generation SNL her father is comedian Chris Elliot he was on SNL too he was the paper boy in Get a Life and the handyman with the deformed hand in Scary Moivie.

  12. sonia says:

The Duggars have 20 kids where is the outcry?

  13. Bina says:

Annie, I guess it depends on who’s having the babies. When it’s a poor African mother, it’s seen as her fate. When it’s someone in America, it’s seen as something freaky or crazy. Either woman adds to the problem of overpopulation, though! And I don’t know who the Duggars are (are they that family that named their 18 children with the same letter of the alphabet?) but they sound crazy to me too.

  14. kiki says:

I beleive a big part of Todays celebrities adopting babies is to turn bad public opinion of them into a postive spin they are now perceives as family oriented
look at Michael jackson he started getting babies , getting married didnt work for him when Child molestation charges were brought against him
AJ with the whole BrotherF***ing , Billy Bob back seat f*** and the drug stories but in her case I do think children have has a calming effect on her wild side.
    Madonna ….
this may be a way for Lindsay Lohan too get back in the a postive view with her public too.

  15. HashBrowns says:

@Annie: Have you been reading ANYTHING about the Octomom? People hate her because she’s had a bunch of kids she can’t afford and we Californians have to pay for her births. As for the Duggars, they are religious-crazy and while they leech off of endorsements, they don’t cost us taxpayers a single dime, therefore, who really cares what they do?

As for these two, I suspect the problem is that they aren’t adopting from America. There are I don’t know how many unwanted children right here in America, but Angelina insists upon having her Rainbow Family consisting of foreign babies. She can have a Rainbow family of American kids.

And it isn’t the adopting in general that is bothersome. It’s Angelina’s weird need to a bunch of kids from all over the world as though she’s collecting them.

Madonna is just stealing babies from Malawi so…yea, I disagree with that.

  16. Kaiser says:

ZOMG WAR Geronimo – I said I thought the skit was funny, and it was. My problem is with how the actual news reporting (in America) was handling the story.

Mairead – did someone say bacon?

  17. daisy424 says:

    It was a hysterical skit.

  18. HashBrowns says:

Oh, and the skit was ridiculously funny. My favorite line:

“My big, weird lips are sealed”.

  19. geronimo says:

LOL. Pardon me. I know what you mean but I’m surprised you’re surprised that the media has lumped them together – it’s an easy (albeit lazy) comparison to make: both adopting outside of the US and from 3rd world countries, both high-profile individuals, both involved in charitable activities, both attracting controversy, both seeming to have a slight touch of the crazies about them. Of course the circs are different but it’s predictable pickings for the media. Just enjoy the comedy, that’s what I say.

  20. RAN says:

The skit was laugh out loud funny – you don’t get that from SNL much anymore.

Hashbrown, not sure if I agree with you very often or not, but you could very well have nailed what the issue could very well be. “As for these two, I suspect the problem is that they aren’t adopting from America.” Personally, I am happy that anyone takes an interest in needy children. But… for some reason, I think these women pick needy children as part of a narcissistic tendency… to build up their “cred”. I could be wrong…. but who knows for sure?

  21. Annie says:

Please do not get me started on the OctoMom lol.

But here’s the thing, and you pointed this out, it’s the fact that she’s on welfare that people gripe about. Not the children part.

The Duggars strike me as nutty, but hey, they have no debt and their children seem happy/healthy enough.

So I stand by what I said 😛

And “Annie, I guess it depends on who’s having the babies. ”

Yup. Agree with that 100% too.

I look at AJ as giving these children another stab at life, and doing it all legally. She took all the correct routes.

Madonna on the other hand, seems to be on self-righteous, “I gets what I want” type thing that isn’t about the child.

End of the day, the thought of having more than 4 natural kids makes my uterus shrivel up and run away. But hey, each to their own so long as they’re not 1. harming the child. 2. breaking laws to obtain the child and 3. mooching off my tax dollars.

DAMN YOU 1% SALES TAX HIKE IN CA! 8.75% in San Diego. 🙁

  22. Annie says:

Oh! And I forgot. About the whole “collecting from different parts of the world” thing.

I’m ok with it because she did it legally and hey, these kids came from unfortunate circumstances. Our notion of poor in America is their notion of middle class.

    I mean, look at Pax: In Vietnam, 1 đồng = 5.6 × 10-5 U.S. dollars

We could take 100 dollars to Vietnam and live like kings for a week.

Over here? 100 bucks barely covers my car insurance. lol.

  23. Mme X says:

I thought they were both great and that Kristen Wiig got the fake, tony accent down pretty well.

  24. RAN says:

@ Daisy and Mairead… glad to see the two of you are still around. I hadn’t ‘seen’ you for a while (or our paths haven’t crossed), so I wondered where you were 😉

  25. Jag says:

    That was hilarious. 🙂

  26. daisy424 says:

RAN, I have been on FB with most of the ‘regulars’, you should join us!

  27. Ned says:

People said Aneglina sped up her adoptions and didn’t exactly follow everything through.

For example, with Pax- you need to visit the child several times and prepare him to the transition, beforehand.
While in Angelina’s case, the poor boy met her the for the first time at the same day she took him away, with no preparation and without at least several meetings with her in which the child get to know the people who would raise him and start a connection in a more gradual way.

Instaed Angelina just came, took him away when he was terrified and didn’t know her, didn’t understand English, and she renamed him, and had a People magazine staff in his hotel room, take pictures of him and see him.

I don’t really know of any internation law or procedure that recomends such treatment of a child.

  28. Bodhi says:

    Bacon? Where?!

  29. Ned says:

There were also claims Angelina failed to report that Brad and her were adopting together as an unmarried couple- which would have disqualified them.
Instaed she failed to report on her living with a man, unmarried- and after the adoption was complete Brad started the procedure.

“Following the rules” would have entailed a disclosure of the real situation (unmarried couple).

In third world countries money talks, and the probing is not as thorough as in Western countries.

  30. becca says:

Uhhh…..am I totally out of the loop or something? Does Madonna REALLY speak with a British accent these days, or is that just the skit?

Because if she seriously is speaking with a British Accent these days, I am more disgusted with her than I already am…the girl is from DETROIT.

  31. Enonymous says:

I don’t really have a particular opinion on the adoption issue but I can understand why would Madonna choose to adopt, she is 50 years old and unable to have children of her own again but still wants to expand her family and has the means to take care of them well and is helping a oprhan child to have a better life in the process.

As for the Octomom and the Duggars subject, they disgusting me exactly the same, not because of the issue that they might or they might not cost the taxpayers money or even if it matters that they are a couple or a single parent but because they are SELFISH BEYOND BELIEF to spit out so many kids with the arrogance that somehow the world needs more humans beings from their dysfunctional gene pool (eg. the Duggars and their delusional religions crusade to single handedly over populate the earth with their useless spawn).

  32. Mind you own buisness says:

Some of you need to get your facts straight. Angelina did apply as a single parent, just as she did with Maddox (almost 8 years ago), and Zahara. She and Brad had already visited the country well before the adoptions. She was in the country for awhile before she took him home. It is ridiculous the way people in this country have to find the negative in every situation. Angelina adopted Madd when she was 23 or 24. Not many women anywhere would have the courage to do so. Just because Madonna had problems does not mean the same applies to Angelina she and Brad both had to go through a rigorous process in order to adopt. Social workers come to your home and evaluate you and the child. This happens over 6 months to a year. There is paper work and evaluations they (especially Brad) have to complete. It is not an easy process. And to demean it and the people who open their homes to needy children (Regardless of what country) shows the ignorance of the adoption process. I am quite sure that most of the people posting on this topic would never be able to do this. So Hugh Jackman, Meg Ryan, Sharon Stone, Tom Cruise,Rosie O’Donnell and the countless other celebs who have adopted and the ones that were adopted should step forth to stop this crap now. Funny is funny, but this is not funny at all. It is just a cover to attack Madonna but mostly Angelina. It you are not involved in the process and you are using Tab reports and web rumors as your source then you should just STFU and live you life and let them live theirs. Their kids are happy and loved. Go and adopt yourself and give a child a home. Yes I have done so myself. And there is nothing more fulfilling in the world. They are you and you are them. What a sad time in this world that the adoption of children has to be the tag line on a joke.

We obviously have a long, long way still to go. Shame on so many of you.

  33. Wow says:

Abby Elliot or Amy Elliot – whichever one she is, this woman is hilarious! I loved her first one about Octo Mom. And it cracks me up the way she says the word “babies” and gives those pouting lips looks to the camera.

    Love her!

  34. Wow says:

@ Ned – yeah, Angelina got some “breaks” too in her adoptions.

  35. RAN says:

Ummmm…MYOB…if I were to get my facts straight, I may have to correct yours. I don’t follow AJ on a regular basis, but even I know she didn’t adopt Maddox when she was 23-24. The child was at least two years old when she got him, and since she’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 33-34 today, Maddox would be 12 – which he isn’t. Facts are a beautiful thing and shouldn’t be shifted to suit the person purporting to know them.

@ Daisy – I’ve missed you!! We’ll have to look each other up on FB, but I wouldn’t know the best way to pull it off.

  36. Celebitchy says:

Kaiser I love your new icon! I want to adopt you. If you go to Facebook and search on “Celebitchy” our group will come up. I’m not active enough with it, but you can join and meet the people from the site.

  37. HashBrowns says:

@MYOB: I think your Humor Chip is faulty…no one is putting down or making fun of adoption as a concept. They are making fun of white women adopting “spicy brown babies” to appear as though they are understanding and sensitive to the brown people’s problems.

  38. daisy424 says:

RAN, Search in FB under celebitchy. Two will come up. Choose the celebitchy page, not the Katie At Celebitchy page. She has too many friends to go through and you’ll never find me. I will change my profile picture to what it is here, a yellow daisy. In case others follow the clues I am giving you, when you request me to be a friend, include your favorite football team and I will know it’s you!
    Hope to see you there.

  39. Jonesaround says:

Angelina Jolie obviously has a well-known history of questionable lifestyle choices, which would exclude her from adopting within the United States. It is easier for an individual with such a marked personal history to adopt from a third world country where it is acceptable to use cash as a means to smooth the adoption process.

  40. Mind you own buisness says:

    RAN:

You have it all wrong. She started the process when he was 3 months. She brought him home at 7 months. So NO you do not know what you are talking about. Maddox will be 8 years old in August. Do the math. MY Bad she was 25 or 26.

She had the baby with her when he was 7 months not 2 or 3. And what difference does it make? She was a single parent. People were not complaining about her adoption then. NO just now because of Madonna.

And what difference does it make who adopts.. as long as kids have a good home. Even “brown spicy kids”. I guess Tom and Huge wanted “spicy brown kids too” You people are just too much. There must be chilren here. And yes I have a great sense of humor..

When there is something to laugh about. the SNL skit was not funny.

  41. DD says:

MYOV – She was almost 27 when she adopted Mad since you are so obsessed with numbers, it should only be fair that you got that right from the onset. I mean you went from 23 which is a great exaggeration.
Comparing Angelina’s adoptions to Madonna’s are stupid. They are both adoptions where these guys were able to pick them up quickly without much complication. Madonna only chose to do it in a country with more stringent laws. I’m sure Angelina would never have adopted her children if she had to reside in their country for 2 years.

  42. cleveland says:

I thought the skit was funny! I love Angelina’s big weird lips quote and Madonna chasing after the decoy baby.

Regarding their adoptions, as far as I know, Angelina’s adopted kids didn’t have relatives crying “Don’t take my kids!” because I’m poor. Didn’t Mercys granma accuse her of “stealing my baby”? Didn’t David’s father trael 3 hours to visit his kid by bike? THAT IN ITSELF would make the ordinary human being stop and reconsider, don’t you think? Not Madonna–she wants what she wants, I guess. She should try and adopt kids who are truly unwanted orphans and not kids who are in the orphanage because the family are that poor. IT’s just so classless and arrogant–I’m richer than you, so I’ll take that kid, your feelings be damned, thank you very much.

  43. Codzilla says:

“And yes I have a great sense of humor..”

That statement is even funnier than the skit.

  44. Mind you own buisness says:

How do any of you know how long it took for Angelina or any celeb to adopt their kids. I guess they should release a press statement to alert the “adoption police” when they file the paper work. Angelina has always said that she wanted to adopt children. This was well before SHE told the world of her past. Funny thing is the people that some consider “proper people; with out a past” turn out on more occasions to be the real nuts who harm kids. I am tired of this conversation. I guess the tabs/ web blogs have become the true measure of the truth. Too many people believe everything written in and on them. And the sad part is that legitimate press sources are reporting the same bull. I guess honesty is a dead art.

    See ya.

  45. Ursula says:

Kaiser obviously you have a selective memory, have you forgotten how Angelina adopted Maddox from a child trafficking agency? That the head of that ring is now in jail? That she feared they would make her give back the baby? That at the time with all her whackness no country would give her a child? Isn’t that breaking rules even worse than Madonna?

And Maddox had a grand parent, so does Pax and Zahara has a mother. Problem with Brangelina fans is that you never take off your rose tinted glasses when it comes to Brangelina.

  46. kubi says:

I do recall that, while Pax’s adoption was perfectly legal, the manner in which he was taken from the only home he’s ever known to the Jolie-Pitt media circus without an adjustment period, was described as “cruel” by some adoption experts. I also remember that Angelina promised she’d be taking a full year off to help him blend into the family, then made Wanted and Changeling back-to-back. It’s not surprising then, that some people believe she’s more interested in “collecting” kids for PR purposes than she is in being a mother. Loving parents don’t sell out their kids to the paps and W magazine when they’ve a film to promote either….

  47. Alita* says:

MYOB; whereas you cite credible dates, facts? I laud you non-“tabs/ web blogs” sources and concisely written critique! You know – the ones you never mention? Your turning to the obligatory boogyman of ‘those quiet nuts that really hurt kids’ is shying away from the questions posed to you due to your inability to – you know – answer them.

I guess honesty is a dead art. Toodles!

  48. cassie says:

Kubi, Where is the quote that she would take a full year off after Pax was adopted. I’m looking at the People article (Pax ‘s Adoption) and it says no such thing.Ursula there is no proof that Zahara’s mother is alive . I have seen pics of three different women claiming to be Zahara’s mother in British, Australian and American Tabs. Pax mother may be alive but she gave him up and as for Maddox I don’t know know about his grandmother.
Lets investigate Ewan Mcgregor” stealing” a child from Mongolia or Mary Louise Parker “collecting a child” from Ethopia. Maybe we should outlaw all foreign and tranracial adoptions.

  49. Baby Contest says:

Interesting conversation here… I wonder if being rich and famous gives people the right to adopt children… and to they really care or is it just “in-style”? to adopt exotic babies… If these celebrities can supply a better life for children… who are we to judge?

  50. HashBrowns says:

@cassie: Again, it isn’t the CONCEPT of foreign adoption that people think is funny or don’t like. It’s white women adopting brown children from far off lands to appear politically correct and worldly. There is no need to adopt a “spicy brown baby” when there are plenty of children who need homes right here in America. There are plenty of brown children who need homes here as well, if they insist upon having a brown kid.

  51. Pufft says:

While I do find the clip funny in parts (Okay, it is extremely funny), I want to address an issue that I’ve tried my darnest best to avoid responding to simply because I have a feeling I’ll be bombarded with hate mail. Now it just irks me beyond Paris Hilton’s existence and the thought of receiving hate mails doesn’t seem so bad anymore…

Enough of that Angie should adopt in America instead of other countries crap. Enough! I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, some of you guys need to stop shoving your heads where the sun don’t shine and research subject matters before spewing such nonsense on pages. To say that orphans in poverty stricken countries are under privileged is an understatement. In fact, I guarantee that most orphanages in developing countries have the potential to make American orphanages smell like a bed of roses. Gee-effing-weez. Anybody that adopts in developing countries deserves a pat on the shoulder, not to be chastised. I wish more people would follow suit because the conditions many of these children live in leaves much to be desired.

Bitching about why Americans should consider adopting in America first and foremost before jetting off to less privy countries does nothing to help those underprivileged children. I don’t think there should be diplomacy when it comes to adopting because an orphan is an orphan. Everybody and anybody should be able to adopt in whichever country they choose without people screaming out “where is your sense of diplomacy?”

Also, I’m assuming, if one adopts a baby in, say, Cambodia, the baby will have typical Asian features (you know, dark eyes and hair, tanned-looking skin, etc) and if you adopt in Ethiopia, I’m assuming that you’ll most likely adopt a child with darker skin colour and so forth. Doesn’t anybody find it in the least bit deranged that colour is now an issue?

  52. RAN says:

@ Daisy… I can’t find your daisy icon, but I think I found Mairead…. I’ll join both CB and Mairead (if she’ll have me) 😉 and we’ll try to connect if you see me.

CB… if you see me… point Daisy to me or vice versa… THANKS!!

  53. HashBrowns says:

For the last time: Foreign adoption as a concept is NOT BAD. NOT. AT ALL. I commend people for adopting from anywhere as any unwanted child from any country deserves a good home.

What personally bothers me is white middle aged mothers following in the footsteps of their favorite celebrities and getting little brown kids to parade around and talk about how they are so worldly and are “doing their part” instead of adopting because they want to love a child.

I’m sure there are some who do it with true intentions but there are definitely those rich women who are bored and adopt a kid because Angelina did and leave them with nannies and talk about how they adopted a kid from here or there. I know because there are parents at my school like that. It’s falling off now that it is no longer “popular” to adopt kids from foreign countries but there was a bumper crop the last few years of all these ethnic kids in my classroom and I wondered what was going on. As it turned out, every “ethnic” kid had a white mom who rarely came to parent-teacher meetings. Maybe it’s just my school; maybe it’s an isolated trend. I don’t know. But I do know that there were at least 50 cases like this at my school.

  54. Pufft says:

“I’m sure there are some who do it with true intentions but there are definitely those rich women who are bored and adopt a kid because Angelina did and leave them with nannies and talk about how they adopted a kid from here or there”
    ___________

I would think there are MANY who adopt with good intentions. I’m not completely ruling out the possibility that some women adopt dark skin children because it is in fashion (although I am particularly finding it hard to believe the number of adoption cases you have stated at your private school), but those people are in the minority.

If you adopt in Africa, a predominantly dark skin continent, you are more prone to adopt a black baby. The assumption would then be that ‘rich women’ that adopt in Africa do it because they want a baby with darker skin to appear more worldly, when in fact, Africa as a continent sees a lot of foreign adoption. It’s not so much that it’s a fashion, but that most children here need the help more then others.

  55. Kevin says:

Myob,,,you didn’t get a single fact straight…. Angelina was married to Billy Bob when Maddox was adopted. You need to read more post less.

  56. Ned says:

Angelina cannot adopt from any Western Country because of her mental and drugs record, which indicates instability for the children.

Madonna cannot have bio children due to her age, so I can understand why she is adopting.
Plus, she is not having 6 children within 3 years, but actually gave a home and time for the children to adjust.

  57. Ned says:

Zahara has a mother and family that are so poor they can’t raise her or fight the adoption in court.

If you want to help people in Africa, you don’t just take away their children while they have a mother.

All these PR adoptions are encouraging trafficking and making an industry out of “selling” children.

When poverty is so poignant, children who have parents will be taken away and given to wealthy Westerners.
