Donald Trump explains why he insults women: ‘I find that women fully get it’

trump people

People Magazine has been releasing more outtakes from their Donald Trump cover interview. I covered the first excerpts from the interview here. For what it’s worth, the funniest part (to me) was that Melania really, really does not seem interested in Trump’s bizarre presidential run whatsoever. And he doesn’t seem interested in having her on the campaign trail either. Anyway, in another excerpt, People asked Trump about his history of making sexist and/or derrogratory statements about women, from Rosie O’Donnell to Megyn Kelly to Carly “That Face” Fiorina. Trump’s response is… interesting.

Donald Trump has long been known to make outlandish remarks, but since launching his bid for the presidency in June, he’s caused a stir with his frequent comments on women’s looks. In an interview with Rolling Stone last month, he called fellow Republican hopeful Carly Fiorina’s viability into question, saying, “Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that?” After a years-long feud with Rosie O’Donnell, Trump publicly blasted her during the first Republican debate, saying he reserved descriptors like “fat pig” and “dog” for her. And in a recent New York Times article, Trump insulted supermodel Heidi Klum, seemingly at random, saying she was “no longer a ten.”

Asked to explain why he so frequently resorts to insults about physical appearance, Trump goes down the list.

Carly Fiorina? “I was really talking about her persona,” Trump insists.

His long and vicious feud with Rosie O’Donnell? “She’s a horrible bully,” he says, adding that amid their longtime public back and forth, “Frankly there was no way that you could deal with that situation. I had no choice unless I wanted to just sit back and be a punching bag and you know that’s never been my thing.”

As for why he insulted Klum? “That comment was made very innocently,” he says with a shrug. “I like Heidi. And Heidi’s got a lot of confidence.”

While he is clear that he doesn’t quite understand the response his comments elicit, he admits the negative press that has ensued inspires him to be more cautious.

“I’ve become very politically correct recently,” he insists. But he nonetheless stands by his commentary. “I find that women fully get it. They understand me and they understand life and they’re very sophisticated, they’re very strong and they’re great.”

[From People]

Donald Trump calling someone else a bully is so rich. His go-to attack line when he’s targeting a woman is almost always the woman’s looks too, because he truly treats his life and business like a beauty pageant where women should be rejected from society if they don’t live up to his expectations. I really don’t even understand this though: “I find that women fully get it. They understand me and they understand life and they’re very sophisticated, they’re very strong…” What is there to “get”? Does he really think that women watch him bully, insult and mock other women (for their appearances!) and those women think, “Oh, I know what he’s trying to say, I understand him”? We do understand him. We understand that he’s an unrepentant misogynist.

What would he say if people made such comments about his daughters.

I always find it interesting that he is seen more with his older children. He is a creep and the thing that blows my mind is when I see women out there supporting him. And then we as women wonder why we still struggle to have equality. You get what you accept..

    • Ally8 says:

Actually, he’s made creepy comments about Ivanka, too.

“Yeah, she’s really something, and what a beauty, that one. If I weren’t happily married and, ya know, her father …”

“If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her,” Trump cracked in a now-infamous 2006 interview with “The View.”

Three years earlier, the billionaire real estate mogul described Ivanka as “6 feet tall” with “the best body” during an appearance on Howard Stern’s shock jock radio show.

So his objectifying misogyny knows no bounds.

      • jess says:

Even when he’s making comments about how sexy and beautiful his daughter is, it’s another “I’m amazing moment”. Because he made her and she’s so beautiful. It has nothing to do with her it’s always about how great he is. Even at assigning genes.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

Trumps comments make you wonder what it was like for Ivanka growing up while her Daddy did lust for her body.

      • Beth says:

Trump has said some really gross things about his daughter, but I imagine he would be up in arms if someone else publicly said Ivanka is no longer a 10 or isn’t good looking at all. His “innocent” comments about women only apply to those he sees as disposable (which is most women). The person who dares to say something negative about his dear Ivanka, especially her looks, would be public enemy number 1.

    • Franca says:

Didn’t Ivanka have a lot of olastic surgery? With a father like that, no wonder.

      • Caro says:

Ivanka had loads of plastic surgery.

      • V4Real says:

Hell yes she’s had a lot of plastic surgery.

I also remember the comment he made about Angelina Jolie where he said she wasn’t that good looking. I was like seriously Trump AJ looks a ton better than your current wife. Melania has strong facial features that looks like a man. Marla and Ivana are no beauties either. I was pissed because he attacked AJ for no reason. Probably mad because he couldn’t land her. But none of his wives were beauties in my eyes.

      • Naya says:

@V4Real The second you start ranking his wives looks then you are no better than he is. His wives didnt say jack about anybodys looks, its unfair that they should be dragged because of something he said. Anyway AJ got off easy, Halle Berrys insult was even worse, he said that her top half (skinny petite) rated highly and that her bottom half (curvy by his standards) was a let down. He is just the worst.

      • minx says:

She’s had at least two nose jobs; her nose is not really in proportion to the rest of her face. At she got enormous fake boobs.

      • V4Real says:

        @Naya

These are my opinions that I am making on a gossip site. You dare try to scold me by saying I’m no better than him. But yet here you are on the same site as me where all your comments about celebs haven’t been the most complimentary. I guess you didn’t notice the part of my comment where I said I was pissed at what he said about AJ and that’s why I said what I said. Also he made that comment years ago and I just shared with C/B posters what I said at that time. There is no need for your moral superiority Judgy McJudgerson.

And since Trump wants to throw out there how unattractive some women are he is making his current and ex-wives fair game.

      • Naya says:

Relax V4Real nobody is judging you, lol. I was correcting you. You cant challenge him for ranking women on their appearance and in the same breathe do the same thing. Just because in his opinion, his wives are hotter than AJ doesnt make it a less daft thing to say let alone think. The same applies to you and your opinion. Also, just because this is a gossip site, doesnt mean its a sewer. Many of us chose this site for our escapism because it is the gold standard of gossip sites, meaning it draws self aware readers who dont use the comment section as a dumping ground for their internalised misogyny. Even commenters who do insist on posting about womens appearances confine themselves to describing outfits or make up, rather than the kindergarten level “she is prettier than her” rhetoric.

Even setting aside how short sighted it is to try to challenge a mans sexism by exhibiting a sexist attitude towards his wives, his wives are individuals not chattel, or mere collateral damage. Insulting their looks isnt a slight to Trump, its an insult to them. If you must challenge Trump by disparaging someones looks, you disparage HIS LOOKS. All of this should surely be obvious.

      • Beth says:

@V4Real – I disagree that Trump making comments about other women’s appearances makes the women associated with him fair game. It makes Trump fair game since he is the one choosing to publicly shame. It is an antiquated mentality to go after a man’s spouse, sister, daughter, mother, etc to get back at him or when he is the root of a problem. It implies they only function as an extension of this man and are not their own person. And until proven otherwise, they are not the ones spewing vulgarities out of their mouths towards others.

      • V4Real says:

@Naya Even posters who as you say confine themselves to describing outfits or make up, rather than the kindergarten level “she is prettier than her” rhetoric have said negative things about a celebs looks, not just their clothes. But nice try, therefore speak to what you have said on here and not for others.
And let’s not pretend that you have never said something negative about a celebs face. Even if you’re saying someone looks like they have had work done or don’t look their best is talking about their looks.

Once again you failed to notice that I said I made that comment many years ago. You can’t seem to wrap your head around that. Furthermore Ms. Moral police why haven’t I seen you make a comment to other posters when they talk about the lack of facial beauty when it comes to celebs like the Kardashians and others? Why did you pick this particular thread and post to dump your “you’re no better than him speech?” Then try to follow it up with a “Many of us chose this site for our escapism because it is the gold standard of gossip sites, meaning it draws self aware readers who don’t use the comment section as a dumping ground for their internalised misogyny.” to get other posters on your side. You have made some not so nice comments yourself regarding celebs. Now if the issue lies with me just say so. Because I’m not the only one who has commented on Melania’s looks (just look under this post) but I don’t see you giving them the speech.

The reason this sounds personal is because you’re still avoiding the fact that I said this is what I said years ago. It seems fishy that you would want to jump all over me for something that I said such a long time ago.

And what is it that you’re actually correcting? I said that his wives IMO were not that attractive that’s my opinion, it’s not a fact.

      • V4Real says:

@Beth That’s fine. You don’t have to agree with me. That’s just my opinion.

      • korra says:

@Beth +1 We should focus on how awful Trump is and how insanely awful looking both inside and out.

      • Caro says:

        @LISA2

Yes, he is a creep. The thing is, he’s been attacking women out of the blue for a very long time.

I think a lot of it has to do with his own personal issues, for instance with Heidi he may have gone after her for her years married to Seal, since he’s a racist – it could have been a kind of delayed reaction.

I recall Trump pulled the same thing with Angelina, who he doesn’t even know. Brought her up out of the blue on Larry King – and really started going in on her -saying he didn’t think she was beautiful and just tearing her down (of course it was Angelina who was being heralded aa the ‘most beautiful woman in the world’ not his fake broke down Angelina wannabe looking wife)

At the time I think his decades younger trophy wife had just had their son but no one in the public cared because Angelina and Brad were together and pregnant with Shiloh.

Not that people would have cared anyway, but he was delusional and thought he and his wife should warrant the same kind of press!

Seriously I think that’s what drives most of his insults – he gets threatened by some women and the actions of some women…and he lashes out.

Sad thing is, if women had banded together and repudiated his sexism and nasty hateful comments about women in the past, it’s doubtful we’d be dealing with him now as a potential nominee.

But a lot of women seriously don’t mind when *some* women who don’t deserve it are publicly ridiculed and torn apart. On some level they like it because they’re as jealous and threatened as Trump.

      • Zingara says:

You are spot on, Caro, particularly in your final paragraph. We’ve got a few doozies in politics here in Australia, but nothing like Trump…what a creepy twat. Why and how would any woman ever want bo “be” with him, ever? His looks are bad enough, but his insides, his mind, his thoughts, his beliefs…yuckyuckyuck!! Oh, wait….

      • MissB says:

Can people please stop attacking his wife and other women in his life. Trump is a big ugly jerk and he should be the one being harshly criticised, not his wife. And how is his wife a “fake broke down Angelina wannabe looking wife”? Other than having brown hair she looks nothing like Angelina. That comment is just ridiculous.

How is trump really that much different that Joan Rivers? Joan attacked many female celebrities based on their appearance. The only difference I see is that Joan could say horrible things about other women and it got written off as comedy, but Trump says the same kind of crap about women and people get angry?

  2. NewWester says:

Trump is still doing well in the polls which frankly surprises me, I thought he would be gone by now. It would be interesting to see Trump go up against Hillary Clinton in a debate. I am not from the US. So I have to ask, how long is your election campaign? Seems like it goes on for a very long time

    • MooHoo says:

I think he will burn out. Hilary seems to be low-key(ish) and steadfast at the moment and taking the long term approach. Once the debates on the issues really start, then we will really see how far Trump will go.

    • Lilacflowers says:

The Presidential election is scheduled for November 8, 2016. The major parties don’t even begin their primaries to choose their nominee until February 9, 2016. Yes, it lasts a very long time. Far too long.

    • manda says:

The election is not until November next year. so, you’re right, long effing time. It has devolved to the point that all politicians really care about is the next election

    • BRE says:

We vote a year from November so, yeah, it is really long.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

How long is our election campaign? Endless. Eternity. Until you want to scream every time the phone rings because you know it’s a recorded message from one of those sadistic idiots. Until you can’t turn on the tv without seeing a thousand commercials about how the other candidate did everything wrong, nothing about what this one plans to do instead, of course, just how the other one screwed up. Until sane people lose the will to live. Forever.

    • Annaliese says:

How long is our election campaign period? Not quite eternal, unfortunately.

I dunno. I’m in no way a fan of Donald Trump, but I’m not sure it makes sense to scold someone for criticizing women based on their looks when so many topics on this site include “Would you hit it?”

    • Tiffany :) says:

For members of the House of Representatives, whose elections are every 2 years, the campaign season never really ends. They are in a state of constant campaigning, which impacts their ability to DO.THEIR.JOBS. That’s why nothing ever gets done, because its all about fundraising and not governing.

  3. Naya says:

Sad to say but there are women who do “get” him. Attacks on other women are of no consequence as long as he isnt talking about them. In fact a good chunk of those types actually enjoy watching another woman “get taken down a peg or two”.

  4. Idon'tCare says:

I don’t think he “gets” it. While I loathe Rosie O, him calling anyone a bully is ridiculous.

    • ldub says:

yea, “they get” that your a dickhead.

    • K says:

Ok while he has no moral high ground here and is himself a bully he is also not wrong about Rosie. She is a bully and a horrible person. Now this does not excuse what Donald trump has said about her or make him any less disgusting misogynic or sexist because he is all those things and more but he isn’t wrong Rosie is a bully.

  5. Kiki says:

People of United States of America. If this, insecure, misogynistic and a complete Douchbag of Man Donald Trunp is your POUTS. You country is not going to be great again. You country will be a laughing stock to other countries around the world .

    • Franca says:

Who cares if they’re a laughing stock, if Trump actually becomes president The us woild be a major danger to the world.
Seriously guys, it’s not funny anymore.

Speaking of, who ever ordered the attack in Afganistan that hit a Doctors without borders hospital should be charged for war crimes. But they’re American so tjey probably won’t be.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

It’s POTUS. Nod the sane among us know that he is dangerous. I don’t think he will win, but it makes me sad that he is being taken seriously by anyone.

      @Franca
The air strike that killed 11 people in a DWB hospital was in response to a direct attack on U.S. forces. Apparently, it continued some 30 minutes after the hospital notified US forces that they were being hit, and several doctors and patients died, including three children. It’s tragic and unspeakable. It is being investigated, and I hope if it is found out that a crime was committed, the persons responsible will be held accountable, American or not. But I know you want them to be punished simply for being American, and that’s really not fair.

      • Franca says:

Where on Earth did I say that, GNAT?!?! Someone should be punished, people burned alive in that hospital. I don’t want them to be punished because they’re American, I’m just saying that they probably won’t be because, if I’m not mistaken, the US doesn’t work with the Hague Tribunal.

Just because I don’t think America is the greates country on Earth doesn’t mean I hate it. It’s just that I think your foreign policy has been very flawed for years. That’s all.

      • MP says:

The US has been involved in several “friendly fire incidents” over the years and I don’t think anybody has ever been found guilty of those. It does make the allies of the US pretty bitter when their soldiers are killed by US soldiers and then nothing happens, the incident is just buried.
I have not forgotten the ski lift massacre of 1998,caused by US pilots who were messing about. Those pilots were acquitted like no big deal. Things like that really make other countries mistrust the US since it feels like only American lives matter.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

        @ GNAT

Your attitude is exactly what people dislike about US Americans in general. If you point out crimes of US Americans to them then US Americans usually feel as if their whole country were threatened with extinction.
Franca didn’t want all US Americans punished but just those responsible for crimes. But you react as if there had been a call to erase the whole USA.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        @Pondering
Please. Every chance Franca gets, she tells how evil the U.S. is. We only give to charity if we get something back, we don’t care about anything but oil, blah blah blah. Show me an ounce of fing oil we have gotten out of this hell hole we’re in now. She doesn’t know what happened in this incident any more than anyone else does – it’s being investigated. She assumes that she knows it was the fault of US soldiers, and that they won’t be punished, because they “never are.” What a load of crap. They’re probably 19 years old, from Iowa, defending their country. It’s a war. Inexcusable, horrific, horrible things happen in war. And she wants to put these kids in jail for following orders, or the maybe 22 year old guy who gave the order because he thought his allies were being attacked and he didn’t know that was a hospital? Do you REALLY think they attacked a hospital with children in it intentionally? Yeah, you probably do. But they didn’t. They wouldn’t. And you can believe whatever you want, but if you talk such bs I’ll call you out on it because I’m sick of it. And you know what, Pondering? Thirty years ago I spent a semester in London, and five or six people from England took me aside and chewed me out because America didn’t get into WWII fast enough to suit them. So, I don’t give a rats behind if my ” attitude” is why people hate us. That’s crap. People have always hated us and they always will hate us until they need something from us. Then they’ll come running with their hands out and bitch about how long it took us to save their ass. And I’m sick and tired of it. Maybe wait ONE DAY to find out what happened before you condemn people for something you know nothing about.
I never said Franca wanted ALL US citizens punished. She just wants the ones who have stepped up to try to do right by their country thanks to our crappy leadership to be punished, without knowing the first thing about what happened. What gave you done for your country lately? Yeah, I thought so.

      • Franca says:

Well, GNAT, you obviously read my mind.
And yes, I don’t care if it was a 22 year old guy “defending his country” if he is responsible for 20 people BURNING ALIVE, I want him punished.
And the US is never punished for the war crimes they commited and they DID commit crimes.

As I said, I love many things American, I have a few friends who are American, but I think your goverment tends to be very hypocritical, Not thinking the US is the best country in the world isnt hating. Too bad you can’t see that.

    • MissB says:

America is already a laughing stock to other countries. America lost its way a long time ago, nothing will fix that, Bush and Obama sure didn’t help.

  6. Maya says:

The truth is that Donald doesn’t like women and thinks they are only good for producing children and managing a home.

    • Naya says:

And most importantly, be visual eye candy for the man.

    • Zingara says:

I’d go further and say it’s more than managing the staff who manage the home, or being eye candy for him – since its him we’re talking about here. He uses women for his own gratification. And of course, they need to be a certain type, because he definitely has a type. When they get too old, too used up, too demanding, too tired…snap! Replacement. He’s utterly vile in every way possible.

  7. louise_1 says:

This man is such an idiot. He seriously thinks he has the expertise or remote chance to be President. He is a joke.

    • Esteph says:

The sad thing is that if someone tells him that, he resorts to insults. I know I do not want that as my President.

  8. Lucy2 says:

If he was talking about her “persona” why, at the following debate, did he respond to the criticism of his comments by saying she’s a “beautiful woman”?

  9. BRE says:

I’m ready for him to go but I am curious, if he does stay in, who will be his VP. He really doesn’t like to share the attention. I think is wife doesn’t care because their relationship is about her being the “pretty wife”, she may not have more to office as a first lady than that.

  10. sensible says:

Has anyone in any interview asked him how he can comment on women’s looks so much, when he is no oil painting himself? The man looks like a freshly boiled lobster….surely it’s a bit rich for him to criticize anyone one about appearance.

    • Louisa says:

Men don’t have to look good. They just have to be rich and powerful. That’s why you will never hear him criticize a male candidate about his appearance but only about them being “losers”. Their looks don’t mean anything.

  11. Naddie says:

Typical. You say stupid things about someone and an idiotic excuse comes later. It’s a bit like the patronizing compliments at women’s day : “Congratulations for taking so much shit! Now please go back and keep on taking it!”. I can’t believe there are women supporting him.

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

How is this man leading in the polls? It’s so depressing. My husband tries to comfort me by saying he only has 22% or whatever the number is now. That means 78% of Republicans would not vote for him. But it baffles me how one person could vote for him, especially a woman, but anyone. Can you really see this blowhard being a world leader? Really? I’m moving.

    • Vava says:

I was just as surprised when Sarah Palin had her moment.

    • Jenny says:

Don’t lose heart yet, GNAT, I read somewhere today (Huffpost?) that Trump said that he will quit the race if the polls go down. And I think they will as time goes on, his success in the polls so far was hopefully mostly to do with the media attention and entertainment value of his campaigning. I’m not American but have lived in the US for a few years (love your country, my second favorite after my own Sweden 😉 ) and I can’t believe this joke of a man would make president. Those of you who do vote vote better than this. 🙂

    • Daria Morgendorffer says:

@GNAT, he’s not the only scary contender being given way too much attention. Ben Carson just recently asked where gravity comes from. Not the best example, but he has so many gaffes I can’t fathom why anyone takes him seriously. Standing on a podium and bragging about performing brain surgery doesn’t mean that a person is qualified to run the U.S. I honestly don’t get what GOP voters are thinking when it comes to choosing a candidate this time around.

      • antipodean says:

Hurrah! Then count me in. Do we have a flag? Perhaps we can invite good old Eddie (Izzard) to join us, and he can bring one.

      • MND says:

Just watched the entire series of Daria for the first time last week and then POW you pop up. This means something. But what?

    • frisbee says:

You can come to the Island in the Outer Hebrides with the rest of us if you like…
      http://search.knightfrank.co.uk/edn140188
It looks remote enough to stay out of his way…

      • antipodean says:

The Outer Hebrides are absolutely beautiful, I would love to join you there, but would even there be safe if this bloated article got within cooee of the Presidency?

      • frisbee says:

@ antipodean – course you can join us and of course we would be safe. It’s our Island, we can have anything we want, including grenades, drones, anti-aircraft missiles – all with his name on them!

  13. cee says:

He needs to go away. He has no respect for women and even when he tries to pretend he does it comes off hollow.

  14. Daria Morgendorffer says:

There is no way he’s going to get the nod. The party would probably dismantle itself before giving him the reins. Even the GOP doesn’t want this guy because they know he wouldn’t play by the rules.

People are entertained by him and I honestly believe very few people are really taking this election seriously. I think there is also a degree of people feeling tired of the same old politics and really buying into his “I can’t be bought because I’m not a politician.” His misogyny is disgusting, and his xenophobia is dangerous and ultimately what really disappoints me in terms of how much support and attention he is getting. He is stirring up an anti-immigrant sentiment in a lot of people and that is dangerous and a wrong direction to go in.

The real problem here is political indifference. Voters who’ve stayed home for years or couldn’t be bothered to vote out incumbent politicians that they were unhappy with are now viewing Donald Trump as their great hope for a different future. Scary times. Regardless of which party gets the nod in 2016, I think the U.S. is in for some more years of struggle and hardship as things get worse before they get better. I am not interested in any of the candidates on either side of the aisle. I’m still hoping some more Democrats will throw their hat into the ring, but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen.

  15. Ramona Q. says:

Yes, he has no definition for the “it” we supposedly get. HE doesn’t even know what he’s saying.

    • belle de jour says:

When he speaks, it comes as impulses straight from the id and the ego… with no superego in charge to organize, assess, filter or sort them.

That’s just one reason why & how he speaks directly to people’s basest instincts and fears, the reason why so many ‘hear what he’s saying’ without being able to explain what exactly they just ‘heard,’ and why any ‘logic’ he later attempts to impose upon those blurts and impulses sounds like it came to him too late into the job interview to defend his résumé.

    • North of Boston says:

He’s got enough money and has been CEO of his own companies for so long that he’s probably just been surrounded for ages by bobble-heads who nod agreement at every inane comment he makes. So he’s probably gone years without having to explain his kneejerk reactions and asinine behavior and comments. He thinks he’s brilliant because his people fawn over him; but he’s paying them to do so…if he were poor they’d all be gone in an instant.

But, as he was told in a recent interview “The President is not the CEO of America”…it doesn’t work like that. He’s going to get questioned more and more, and his idiocy and immaturity is going to keep bubbling to to surface.

  16. Tiffany says:
