Winona Ryder on aging: ‘How do you win? If I don’t look ageless, I look haggard’

Above is a photo of Winona Ryder, 43, and her hot longterm boyfriend, Scott Mackinlay Hahn, a fashion designer who founded the socially conscious clothing line Loomstate. These two have been together for over three years and they’re just a ridiculously good looking couple. I didn’t realize that Winona had a longterm boyfriend but she does and they look sympatico. Maybe it’s the all black clothing coupled with their expressive eyes. They’re like soul eaters.

Ryder has a new interview with Entertainment Tonight in which she’s promoting Experimenter, with Peter Sarsgaard, an account of the Stanley Milgram experiments in the early 1960s*. The film is out October 16th and here’s a link to the trailer. It looks really good.

To ET, Ryder talked about aging and how it’s a relief to play a character her own age. She turns 44 at the end of the month, can you believe it? She implicitly denied having Botox or fillers by saying that she’s afraid of needles but added that she doesn’t judge women who do that. Is she doing lasers or just staying inside whenever the sun is out? Maybe she’s used heavy sunscreen since she was a teenager. That has to be it. Despite how young she continues to look, Ryder isn’t immune to criticism. She said that she can’t win, basically. Some of the things she said about aging struck me as poetic.

On people saying she looks the same as she did 25 years ago
“It’s such a double-edged sword, because, it’s like, I want to be allowed to grow up,” Ryder tells ET, curled up in a black tracksuit — she thought we were going to chat by phone — in a suite at the Crosby Hotel in New York City. She blames the current state of nostalgia on social media, which has resurfaced younger pictures of her. “How do you win? If I don’t look ageless, I look haggard. Or if I look normal or whatever, then they’ll talk about how bad I look…”

Ryder, however, has no interest in plastic surgery. “I don’t judge, but I’m just terrified of needles,” she says.

On why she didn’t get roles playing women her age
“I feel like when you’ve had a lot of success in your teen years and 20s — and I’m not trying to speak for anyone else — but something kind of happens where you are in your 30s and people associate you so much with those other roles,” Ryder says. “So, they don’t really think of you as old enough, even though you are old enough.”

“I feel like I kind of had this thing in my 30s where it was just hard because people were really holding onto this ingénue thing.”

“I wasn’t that anymore and I looked young, you know, and I’m not complaining about that, but I also agreed,” Ryder adds, as she sits wide-eyed on the room’s loveseat. “I wouldn’t buy myself as a district attorney when I was 35 either, even though I could have been one, you know, age-wise.”

On her role in Black Swan
“I’m so grateful to Darren [Aronofsky] for giving me that role,“ Ryder says. “It wasn’t something I pursued, because I didn’t think in a million years I could be a ballerina or anything. But, you know, I really owe him a great debt there.”

On playing a character her age in the HBO miniseries Show Me A Hero
“The way that [director Paul Haggis] shot me was super unflattering but great… Look, we all want to look good and stuff, but I think there is something great about embracing getting older.”

On growing old gracefully
Without referencing the current discussion about ageism in Hollywood, which has led many actresses to speak about being overlooked as they get older, Ryder applauds the likes of Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Juliette Binoche for setting the example for aging gracefully. “You look at a lot of these actresses that are winning Academy Awards, and they’re beautiful,” she says.

The actress even has a special phrase for blushing in honor of Binoche. “Very genuinely, I’d call it Binoche-ing,” she says as she pinches the top of her own cheeks, referencing the French actress’ early 1988 film, The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but maybe there’s a new standard of beauty,” Ryder adds.

[From ET Online, headers added]

Without directly saying it, Ryder is saying the new standard of beauty is women aging naturally. She’s right that they can’t win, though. Somehow she’s still looking preternaturally young and I like that she’s not complaining about it at the same time as she’s acknowledging that it’s affected her career.

Ryder recently confirmed that Beetlejuice 2 is in the works! She clarified this week that Seth Myers had cornered her into admitting that and added that she’s not sure when it’s happening. “I don’t know any more than anybody else… I feel bad confirming, because who knows, Burton could do another movie first.” Geena Davis has said she hasn’t heard anything but would be on board too. As for why Ryder would do a Beetlejuice follow up, she said that the film and her other cult classic, Heathers, make her feel nostalgic. “They come on TV and I feel like, ‘Aww.’” Those movies do that for so many of us in her generation.

*If you took Psychology 101 you’re probably familiar with Milgram, who tested how far people would go to follow orders from authority figures. Milgram told subjects they were administering electric shocks to a participant in another room as punishment for not learning a word task. The shock recipient was complicit in the deception and received no shocks, but play acted as if he was being shocked and was suffering. Surprisingly, 65% of the subjects administered shocks they believed to be up to the maximum 450 volts, even when the victim was pleading to have it stop.

Her boyfriend is hot! I think she looks good too.

  2. meme says:

she did something to her eyes; she always looks like a deer caught in the headlights. and she’s had other work done too. she’s full of it.

Beetlejuice 2??? Why? It will suck. Of course Geena Davis is on board – she’s been gone for years.

    • Little Darling says:

I was about to say the same thing Meme. She never seems at ease with the photographers.

I’m happy she’s kind of slowly creeping back onto the scene after the shoplifting scandal. When that happened it seemed pretty clear that she had some mental/emotional issues we weren’t aware of.

She seems okay with coming back in slowly, and her recent interviews have been pretty good.

    • Colleen says:

i have the same thing whenever a camera is pointed toward my face. No matter how hard I try, I just cannot take a photo without looking my eyes opening wide, overwhelming the rest of my frozen face. So I avoid cameras whenever possible.

    • bns says:

she def had work done. her forehead doesn’t even move. she’s still beautiful tho.

      • Hudson Girl says:

Seriously, she doesn’t have lines on her forehead or between her eyebrows.
        Does she think we’re morons?
I took pics last weekend of my much younger (sun avoiding, nonsmoking) cousin and even she has expression lines between her eyebrows…

      • Skipper says:

I’m 42 and I don’t have lines between my eyebrows or on my forehead either. And I tanned/burnt like crazy as a teenager! Some people just don’t have ’em. In my case, I have always had very oily skin which is helpful at keeping the fine lines away. I have some around my eyes, but that’s about it. My mom is 71 and only has a few lines around her eyes as well, and she’s never worn a stitch of sunscreen ever!

      • Jaded says:

I’m 62 and didn’t start getting lines between my eyebrows until I was in my 50s. Even now they’re barely visible. Good genes, staying out of the sun, not smoking and healthy lifestyle.

      • Hudson Girl says:

Oh, I see a difference in pics of her from even a year ago via Google.

To clarify, lines are not wrinkles. They’re only visible on closeups and even preteens can have them.

      • Doodle says:

I’m 61 and do not have lines. I do have silver hair, though.

    • carol says:

My sister is convinced WR did something to her eyes too. Like a lift or something. I can’t see it though.

    • THEA-BO-BEA says:

She look amazing; however, those are not her eyes from the 80’s, 90’s or even 00’s. They’ve been pushed up.
I’ve always loved her and wish her the best!

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Wtf is going on with her eyes?

    • meme says:

plastic surgery. poor plastic surgery. girl has had work done.

      • Jaded says:

Saw her in a very good television series recently and she has not had bad plastic surgery – she didn’t have the wide open-eyed look at all. I think it’s just her “photo” face – like J-Lo’s open mouth. She opens her eyes extra wide.

    • Little Darling says:

Did you not read the article GNAT? Is that alllllll you have to comment on? Her LOOKS???? (:

And that my dear, is snark. <3

    • ElleV says:

I don’t know, she always had that dear in headlights look. Sometimes facial features that translate differently as you age (giant eyes, snub noses, dimples & moon faces are Hollywood ideals for age 3 but not so much for age 30). Her eyes might stand out more now because they don’t mesh as well with ideals for a woman her age vs an ingenue.

My dad had a similar complexion, not much sun damage, and almost no wrinkles except for a few fine lines around his eyes at 40 – so I think it’s possible she hasn’t had work.

      • Dana m says:

I agree, I do not think she’s had work done.
She is still so youthful looking – so pretty!

I think for Wynona it’s called “not having kids”. Boy let me tell you, I think the not sleeping for 3-4 years bc my son was so restless really aged me. The hormones after nursing also messed me up as well in so many ways. I had 3 sleepless pregnancies too. Ugh! But I love them all do pieces.

    • mary says:

I don’t think that’s plastic surgery. It looks like her eyes are really open wide to the point where we see more white than usual. That one photo shows white above her iris. Usually the eyelid comes down over your eyeball enough to hide it. I don’t think plastic surgery can make your eyes open wider.
I am willing to shade her on her physical fitness, though. She’s got no muscle tone in her arms. Chiquita needs to step up the weight training.

  4. Merritt says:

I’m glad she is working more now. I always thought she was talented. Seeing her in Black Swan was one of the better parts of that movie.

It was wrong that she tried to shoplift. But it is ridiculous that a woman would have her career so derailed from something like shoplifting, when several men in the industry have engaged in numerous violent crimes and still get offered coveted roles.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

^^ This! and to the best of my memory (I am an oldie) she took her punishment no whining and just got on with it. Which cannot be said for others (Polanski’s holiday in Europe).

Clearly to many in Hollywood shoplifting is worse than rape and physical abuse.

    • sills says:

It wasn’t just the shoplifting. If you read old-school gossip back pre-internet the word was that she was legit psycho, just a hateful rage beast who burned every bridge in Hollywood. She got away with it for a long time though, cuz she was such a huge star.

    • hunter says:

Shoplifting wasn’t the problem, prescription pill abuse was. And still may be.

  5. ABBESS TANSY says:

She looks wonderful, love her skin. One of my favorite lines in Heathers: “My teenage angst has a body count of 5.”

  6. Texasgurl says:

she is ageless! she looks fantastic for her age. Still looks to be in her early 30s.

  7. shannon says:

I’m a die-hard Winona fan, mainly b/c I’m stuck in the 1990’s. It still feels like 10 years ago, rather than 20….However……she does look a little tweaked. Her cheeks are really pronounced and there isn’t a line in her forehead.

    • Skipper says:

As I said above, I’m 42 and I don’t have a single line on my forehead either, or between my eyes, despite burning/tanning my face for years as a teenager, smoking, and generally not taking care of my skin at all. And I have no idea why! People ask me all the time why I don’t have any visible facial lines… other than having permanently oily skin, I guess it’s just good luck and/or good genes. Also, my forehead is constantly shiny due to the oil, so a shiny forehead isn’t always because of Botox.

      • Ash says:

Skipper- I have the same problem. My skin has always been oily. Always looks shiny and I’ve never had work done.

      • mary says:

Oily skin is wonderful in old age! I was being carded up until I turned 42/43 years old and became a mom. Although, full disclosure, before my little love-bug sucked up my budget, I had money for a personal trainer, monthly aesthetician visits and Obagi skincare. Now I’ve got the budget for a walk/jog while she scooters, Dove soap, and a clay mask once in a while. I still actually look pretty good when I bother to do the do.

  8. Alexi says:

Seriously, I love her acting work but she appears perfect physically – so Botox, fillers and surgery likely….I mean come on! Unless these are photoshopped her skin is line free and flawless. Why can’t people just own getting work done? It’s a choice and in Hollywood it’s a requirement…. Maybe Patricia Clarkson has not had work but I really can’t name that many who refrain from the nip and tuck. I am thrilled Winona is back on screen and yes, they are just stunning together, wishing her much joy and continued acclaim. brava! Didn’t she go out w Matt Damon back in the day?

    • hunter says:

I get work done myself and I strongly suspect she has both fillers and botox for sure. Fillers in the lines around her mouth.

  9. QQ says:

Are we not gonna acknowledge what procedure or manner of pills are enabling them CRAZY OMG I GOT CAUGHT eyes she is sporting

    • Magpie says:

This. And she should just chop the long hair off. Even with the work and pills she’s still gorg and can rock the short hair.

  10. Neah23 says:

Winona doesn’t look ageless nor does she look like she in her 30’s. She looks good and like a woman and her 40’s who had a little work done.

Did she have work done to her eyes? Because she always looks surprised/scared on the red carpet.

    • Fancypants says:

None of the 40 something mums I see at school look that good or that young. I think Winona could easily pass for early thirties.

      • Gwen says:

        Nope.

      • Neah23 says:

Lol no way can Winona pass for 30. If she was 30 everyone would say she looks old for her age.

      • perplexed says:

I think she looks older if you put a current photo next to a photo from when she was 20, but looks younger than other women of her current age. Though since she’s not a mum I suppose that helps in not looking like one…

I think if you started out looking like Winona or Halle Berry, chances are you’ll still look good when you’re in your 40s if you don’t mess with your face like Nicole Kidman did. They started out pretty so I guess I don’t see it as much of a surprise that they’d remain so. The only thing that shocks me is that she smoked a lot when she was younger and it doesn’t seem to have hurt her looks too much. But other than that, Winona did seem to start out with features that would age well…and if she exercises and what-not I wouldn’t expect a dramatic change in the appearance.

  11. Tiffany says:

She will always have that forever startled look in photos. And yes, if I had your appearance I will be all about aging gracefully as well.

  12. Daria Morgendorffer says:

Winona’s “crazy” eyes as others are calling them could be the result of a thyroid problem. In up close pictures, she has wrinkling under the eyes and her eyes have become very hooded–not generally things that get overlooked when there has been a nip and tuck involved.

Good for her for praising women for aging gracefully. It’s nice to see women embrace that. Hate to reference the Kardashians here, but they’re so famous and so plastic that plastic surgery just continues to become something not only accepted in our society, but celebrated and expected. Granted it’s largely due to where I’m from geographically, but I know of more than 5 women who’ve had butt implants/fat injections and breast implants–not even breast implants that are “tasteful” because it was a major insecurity for them, but unnecessarily massive ones. I just read something recently about a 26-year-old “The Bachelor” contestant getting botox “preventatively” to avoid wrinkles. It’s just so crazy. It’s refreshing to see anyone stand up against the current and I’d like to see more celebrities not only talk that talk but also walk the walk.

I completely understand and relate to what she said in this interview. We all want to look good, but to expect to or even want to look 25 forever is ridiculous and unhealthy.

I personally have always thought Winona was a beauty, I’ve enjoyed her acting and I think she looks her age. My cousin is the same age as Winona and could pass for 30 and it is actually because she avoided the sun and never tanned when she was younger.

    • Angelica says:

I was just going to say that I’ve seen lines under and around her eyes. I can’t say much because I have big eyes and light skin (I hate tanning) and I get asked all the time how I have a 9 year old daughter when I look straight out of high school. I’m 29. I don’t see why there so much suspicion here. She looks aged but very beautifully aged imo.

    • captain says:

I think you got it, it does look like thyroid thing. Which doesn’t mean she is completely honest about procedures. I mean, she does rewrite history about her career slump, so she could easily be glossing over other stuff.

  13. RoxyRoller74 says:

She may not do anything to her face RIGHT NOW, but she has definitely tweaked in the past. Her forehead is pretty shiny, might be the camera angle, more probable cause is Botox. And she has had something done to her eyes, my guess is a Blepharoplasty procedure. I would also bet money that she has had a series of chemical peels or laser resurfacing done on her face. I work in the field so I know it when I see it. She is lucky in the fact that she has always looked younger then her years, thank you genetics, but the constantly surprised look she has in all of her photos isn’t coincidence. She had too much skin removed from the eyelid, causing her eyes to ‘pop’ out when the lid is healed.

    • Hudson Girl says:

Can you tell us which laser treatment that rebuilds collagen? Or is that false/exaggerated advertising?

      • RoxyRoller74 says:

Any laser procedure or chemical peel helps to stimulate collagen. It’s the depth of the procedure that determines the results. As a reference point, the facial skin is about 900 microns in depth. Collagen is produced by your body to help heal injuries. When the injury is created in a controlled manner (laser treatments) collagen production will start or continue depending on the age of the client.

Cutera Pearl fraxal – light resurfacing treatment, minimal downtime, need 4-6 treatment for best results. 50-100 microns in depth. Good for really light resurfacing to help even tone and texture. Won’t address scarring or severe sun damage and/or wrinkles.

Sciton Microlaser peel – Depth can be adjusted, downtime is dependent on the depth of procedure, can resurface 50 to 300 microns. Good for resurfacing superficial acne marks, wrinkles, sun damage, uneven tone/texture.

Sciton fractional – deeper laser treatment, can go up to 600 microns, two weeks of down time, maybe longer. Good for pock mark acne scarring, deep wrinkles, sun damage, smokers skin

Chemical peels will also help stimulate collagen but they only penetrate about 30-70 microns. If you want a deeper peel, go with the laser option, less downtime, quicker healing and more cost effective.

      • QQ says:

Roxy, you are everything to me for all this info!

      • Hudson Girl says:

Thank you, Roxy, this is FLAWLESS information!

  14. jeanpierre says:

yay Winona! She looks good. I see some work here and there, but maybe it’s the make up because she doesn’t look plastic at all in the last pic.
I didn’t follow the story closely at the time but I think it’s weird how her career kinda stopped after that shoplifting thing. Of course that was wrong of her but come on now, it’s not that serious. She didn’t harm anybody. It takes more than that to be blackballed that way, it takes more than that for a celeb to even go to jail (I’m not sure but I think she was jailed?) And a lot people who actually harmed others still have very prominent careers in this industry, so…
There must be something more here. She was so very popular…

    • perplexed says:

“There must be something more here. ”

She wasn’t convincing as a grown-up adult. When she was younger she seemed to be considered some kind of prodigy (like Natalie Portman who came after), but as she got older I think people became more divided in how they viewed her acting. Plus, there were those rumours of her being a brat…

  15. Jayna says:

I watched a little movie with Juliette Binoche and Clive Owen, Words and Pictures. It was a nice little movie from 2013 about two people, an art and English teacher at a private school, at their age, with life’s baggage, struggling with certain things, falling for each other.. But it was a joy to not only watch the wonderful Clive Owen in the movie but to marvel at Juliette’s beauty. It’ a mature face and a mature beauty (not a plastic surgery face trying to look 20 something), but the camera just loved her.

  16. vauvert says:

I have always loved her, still do and think that it was completely unfair how her career got derailed… for a guy, that would have only meant a few high profile interviews!
Re: her “ageless” look, I am torn. Maybe she did get something done, not sure, but in a sense, why are we even talking about it? She is right, we can’t win. If we age naturally, we “have let ourselves go”. If we tweak, and for whatever reason it is not perfect and perfectly successful, oh boo, we are shallow and trying to stop time and looking like we had the work done.
Sounds like what the ideal solution is – be super hypocritical, say you do nothing, but secretly spend thousands getting the best possible work done in a way that no one can tell, but you can attribute to luck, clean living… but leave a few tiny wrinkles showing, so people think you are all natural. How much bull and how much pressure!! No wonder most HW celebs lie about it, because you are doomed if you admit to the work, but damned and unemployed if you don’t get the work done!

  17. Jayna says:

And I agree with others, that Wynonna’s eyes are odd. I remember when my friend had her eyes done. She was only in her late 30s and didn’t need it,. She had that startled look for several years. She agreed it was a mistake.

  18. Tessa says:

She does have the look of some of my PD patients.
    Beautiful but not quite right

  19. smcollins says:

Eh, I’m going to lean towards her not having anything done. She was never the super tan sun-worshipper who spent all of her free time on the beach. She’s always been on the pale side and most likely has avoided the sun and kept herself slathered in sunscreen & moisturizer. And probably has a killer dermatologist, to boot! Also, while very beautiful, she always had a bit of a baby face. It is possible to age nicely, and maintain a somewhat youthful look, without relying on Botox and fillers. We’re just not used to seeing it in Hollywood.

    • Uber says:

I believe that she’s never had anything done. She’s kept in the spotlight consistently for various reasons over the years, and you can see subtle (ageing) changes on a gradation basis, but she’s never done the Renee Zellweger thing and had massive changes overnight. I think it’s genetic.

  20. Nic says:

Maybe she hasn’t had Botox or fillers, and maybe her eye work was to correct an actual medical problem….but I find it REALLY hard to believe that she has not had work of some kind done. Not because of her ageless skin, but because of that perpetual startled look around her eyes.

  21. Who ARE these people? says:

“Surprisingly, 65% of the subjects administered shocks they believed to be up to the maximum 450 volts, even when the victim was pleading to have it stop.”

Oh, now I understand the theoretical basis for the campaign styles of Donald Trump and Ben Carson.

  22. analee says:

Unlike most here (it appears) I have never cared for Winona Ryder. Or at least, in every interview I’ve ever seen of her (not many, admittedly) she’s come off as very disingenuous. My speculation is that the *real* reason she never made it past a teen/ young 20’s star is because she simply doesn’t have much range or depth as an actress. She had the “glamorous” teenage angst thing going on for her when she was much younger, but in every movie I ever saw her in she was also, inescapably, inevitably, Winona Ryder, too. Meaning she was never an actress who could disappear into a role by evoking some other character in her place, or vanishing beyond herself so that she could “become” another character instead. (In both Dracula and Age of Innocence, her attempt to act out period pieces was painful: she just looked and seemed anachronistic, a young, distinctly, specifically 1990’s woman stranded in a century far prior to her own time, discrepant and awkward in her dialogue and costumes.) She had beauty and charisma w no far reaching talent, so to me it’s unsurprising that she’s had such stasis overtake her career, from her 30’s on. She outgrew “modern youth” roles, because she herself could not grow any further as an actress.

As for her “fear of needles”, she has evidently overcome it: I am almost certain, from her waxen smooth face, that she has had Botox. Also I think she’s had a blepharoplasty, to make her eyes remain as wide and youthful as she can maintain them. And, no, Winona, come off it: there is not, in Hollywood at least, any “new standard of beauty”–let alone one of women encouraged to age gracefully. She knows this, too: her own tweaked, terse face is proof enough of that.

  23. Jackson says:

What she said: “I don’t judge, but I’m terrified of needles.”
What she meant: “I don’t judge, but I’m terrified of needles ((but I suck it up and get fillers and botox because I want to look like a fresher version of myself and like I am aging very slowly.))” While she doesn’t look as though she’s had anything surgical done, she is definitely filled and toxed. Nothing wrong with that though!

  24. Uber says:

There’s an old film called Death Becomes Her, starring Meryl and Goldie. Winona took that potion, I swear it!

  25. Emily C. says:

So a few years ago I had to show people in a class my driver’s license because they absolutely, completely, totally refused to believe I was a day over 20. I was 33 at the time. I used to get in arguments with other kids who refused to believe my mom was my biological mom because she looked so young, and then if I could convince them of that, they insisted she must have had me when she was 12 or something. (She had me when she was 20; young, but not to an absurd level.)

Genetics does a lot, and not smoking or sunbathing also does a lot. Most of these Hollywood actresses seem to smoke to stay skinny, and that ages you like crazy, especially after 30.

Anyway, her boyfriend is hot. I don’t normally get all swoony just from a picture of some guy I known nothing about, but damn. I hope they stay together for no other reason than that I want to see more pictures of him.

  26. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Am I the only one who thinks she looks crazy?

  27. Claire says:

She looks beautiful. I have the same crazy eyes and pale skin. People usually think I’m in my late teens than my real age: 29 going on 30. Genetics and staying away from the sun are my secrets.

  28. soooo….. yal know she had a slight nose job in the early nineties right??? Picture comparisons

Honestly plastic surgery is suppose to be subtle…. so subtle and often times marketed as preventative or corrective(prior to hitting it big or when you just getting that industry buzz) that many stars and people see it as improvements of what they already have and not technically surgery…what an delusion…. so when asked the question…. they will effectively lie or omit to things bec they have imprinted this philosophy in their mind.
