Alicia Vikander scores her first Elle Magazine cover: stunning or boring?

vikander

Elle Magazine did ten million different covers for their annual “Women In Hollywood” issue, which… I’ve complained about before. I’m all for doing specialty issues, dedicating one month to music or the new collections or women of color. But to declare that November is their “Women In Hollywood” issue is just silly, because nearly every issue of every woman’s magazine is an issue about Women in Hollywood. This year, Elle’s November issue gave covers to Amy Schumer, Dakota Johnson, Carey Mulligan, Gena Rowlands, Kate Winslet, Ava DuVernay, Salma Hayek and yes, Alicia Vikander.

Most people believe Alicia is a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination this year for her work in The Danish Girl. Alicia is getting a lot of coverage and doing a decent amount of press so far, which is why Elle has given her a cover. It felt like this was her first major American mag cover, but already this year, she’s covered W Magazine and Interview. If we’re being honest, doesn’t Alicia seem ripe for an out-of-nowhere Vogue or Vanity Fair cover? Watch this space! Anyway, here are some excerpts from her Elle piece:

Director Joe Wright, the director of Pride & Prejudice and Anna Karenina on Vikander: “The thing about Alicia and that dance training is that those ballerinas, they get up on those pointes until their feet bleed, literally, and yet they keep this serene composure, as if they are floating through space. There’s part of that to Alicia. She’s incredibly determined and hardworking, and yet, from up above, it all looks simple and elegant and easy.”

On her nerves filming in Testament of Youth: “I was nervous taking on the role of Vera Brittain. I needed to do justice to it not only for those who knew of her, but also for the family who remember her.”

On working with Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl: “You can never tell enough love stories on film. To work with Redmayne, who is just the most generous person and actor, was amazing.”

[From Elle]

Boring. And no mention of The Light Between Oceans, which is also being released later this year. I’m sort of wondering if they’re going to push it back, just in case it’s a total bomb and no one wants to Norbit Alicia’s Oscar chances or Michael Fassbender’s Oscar chances with Steve Jobs. Speaking of Fassy, he said some words about working with Alicia recently: “When she arrived on the set, I could see the determination there and the focus, the hard work and then trying to keep it up all the time. She’s a very good actor, disciplined…she works hard and gives great performances.” Not really a testament of love, but at least he acknowledged her in some way, I guess.

Here are some photos of Alicia last week at the Louis Vuitton show:

She’s pretty enough but the cover is boring I am not bothered either way she isn’t on my radar.

    • Rose says:

Her management can attempt to push her all they want. She’s just so generic and boring. I don’t see the big deal.

Pajiba said it best: The Harvey Girls are easily spotted. They are all very pretty, often in a rather generic sense. Their instant fame and the push behind them comes seemingly out of nowhere and without any justification in terms of resume or skill set.

      http://www.pajiba.com/think_pieces/harveys-girls-the-wouldbe-ingenues-where-are-they-now-and-what-happened-then.php

      • Original T.C. says:

        Rose,

Alicia doesn’t meet any of those descriptions of “Harvey’s girls”. Before she was even introduced to Harvey she was a critics darling in the U.S. It’s not her fault that you are not familiar with adult costume dramas. But Harvey is not the one who discovered her, she was hyped up for her performances prior to Harvey. People who dislike her just want to downplay her talent and knock her down to a “casting couch hire” while at the same time saying she’s not even hot. LOL.

Also she is hardly famous, only those of us who read gossip sites are really familiar with her. She attends events dealing with her films, her boyfriend’s film and her fashion house contract. We don’t have weekly pap walks of her getting coffee or attending the opening of an envelope. If you ignore posts about her here, you probably won’t have to see her mentioned elsewhere.

      • violet says:

@Original T.C. +1 The only people who keep repating this bs are the fassloonies.

      • TC says:

Not quite sure what a “fassloonie” is, but she was fantastic in Ex Machina with Oscar Issac and Domhall Gleeson. She was the standout in that movie, hands down. Looking forward to her performance in The Danish Girl with Redmayne.

      • alice says:

Original TC: just this bit that may have to do with Alicia or maybe not. But casting couch hire and not really hot are not mutually exclusive. They just make themselves available and being pretty and maybe having the stomach to do whatever Harvey ask them to do on that couch, sometimes is enough….ew….

      • Original T.C. says:

        @Violet
yes, it seems like a small but vocal subset of Fassloonies are completely ignorant about the film world and only know about Alicia based on what’s been posted on film blogs in relation to her dating Fassy.

So as with other over-invested fans of actors they try to takedown a girlfriend they disapprove of by claiming her only talent is what is between her legs. #notsurprised

Before Alicia ever met Fassy or Harvey, she had won the prestigious Guldbagge Awards for Best actress in her native Sweden, won a Berlin rising star award, nominated for a British Independent film award, a BAFTA rising star, nominations by the Alliance of Women Film journalist and won a Hampton international Film Festival.

She blew up in INTERNATIONAL critics circles for Anna Karenina and A Royal Affair. Was an accomplished Ballerina until injured in her late teens, applied to and was accepted into Law school but chose acting because she loved it more.

Her parents are accomplished people, mother a theater actress and Father a psychiatrist. I can understand people being turned off by some of her blunt interviews but to claim she only became somebody by encountering Fassbender’s d!ck and now connectio with Harvey is eye-rollingly ignorant and sexist.

    • carol says:

I think she’s gorgeous but that cover is awful

  2. GlimmerBunny says:

She looks good but a little sleepy on the cover. She’s my number one girlcrush right now though!

  3. Abbott says:

That cover is unfortunate. She’s much prettier than that. And those quotes from and about her are hella boring.

    • mimif says:

Abot! Did you finish BB yet?

I like Alicia. I don’t like that I’m getting #PippaTips vibes from these pics.

      • Abbott says:

Mimiph!! I’m closing in on the final season.

I’m getting Lea Michele vibes from Alicia.

      • mimif says:

I’m choosing to ignore that last sentence. Report back when you’re finished! How great was the ending to season 4? 😱

    • Cali says:

Thank you, that’s the word I was looking for…unfortunate😒

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

I was going to say!… I didnt know who she was and was like who is that homely (sorry!) girl on the cover? Then I scroll down and see that she is actually really cute and pretty! Bad bad bad cover. I would be pissed if a cover did such a disservice to me like that.

    • tracking says:

Agreed. Looks lovely in the LV show shots though.

  4. fashionista says:

    Boring.

Obviously a beautiful woman, but she needs more/different eye makeup, and I NEVER think anyone needs more makeup. Her features wash out in photos. Even the cover, it doesn’t quite make any of her features stand out and her eyes look even smaller.

  5. Birdix says:

    Nice fourth position.

    • Nanea says:

That’s the first thing I noticed too in pic #2!

    • ab says:

lol. I didn’t know she had dance training, but I see it now. I stand in random old ballet poses sometimes as well (though I think she might have been mid-walk in this pic).

  6. ichsi says:

The cover is so incredibly generic. She’s a very pretty woman and it doesn’t do her justice.

  7. Miss V says:

That cover almost doesn’t look like her. It’s that bad! I do love how she looks at the Louis Vuitton show, though. That outfit is so cute, and she looks beautiful.

  8. Kiki says:

The second picture of her, is what she should look like. I love what she is wearing. I will say a positive, yes she is very pretty, so I suggest when her crap Louis Vitton contract is up, she need a better fashion contract, to make her look exquisite, like Christian Dior. She is perfect for Christian Dior.

    • Minxx says:

Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Lawrence are Dior girls. She’s lucky she got LV.

      • alice says:

I can understand Cotillard as a Dior WOMAN (forgive the caps but I’m done with the ageism, kudos to Bellucci for standing out about it)
But really, all this luxury brands have a target client that is middle aged, very wealthy and sophisticated. Now tell me how that relates to young, playful, next door looking it girls, like Alicia and Jennifer. They try to push this young testimonials on brands that have nothing to do with them.

  9. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I must be getting old because she looks about 14 to me. Lovely, but so young. I’m also not a fan of blouses that show your bra. Not for prudish reasons, she looks fine, I just don’t like the trend in stores where everything is so sheer you need a camisole under it. I’m paying what for this shirt and you can see through it?

    • mp says:

^^^^THANK YOU!!! THIS!!!!! She looks 12 to me, and I think the LV outfit makes her look younger (in a pedo way). Also, agreed on the comment about the shirt.

    • M.A.F. says:

Just about every single blouse I own for work I need to wear camisole. It gets old especially when it’s hot, the camisole just makes me feel hotter.

      • Andrea says:

That bra is unfortunate underneath—I would prefer a tank or camisole underneath as well and I am no prude!

    • kairos says:

She looks like the Childlike Empress with a tan.

  10. Mia4s says:

Frankly all of those Elle covers were over touched and over shopped. Shame because those are all beautiful women. Elle sucks in general though. I’d actually bet on her for a nomination more than Redmayne. He probably will get one but no one seems all that excited about him. The race is Fassy’s now and if the Revenant sucks there won’t be much competition.

  11. alice says:

I’m not a Fassy hardcore stan, I’m not an Alicia hater, so this comment lacks of malignity from me. But boy, given than this lovely girl looks like a 16 year old, and has always that basic, meh, dead stare on her face on and off screen, but particularly on photoshoots, I wonder how much time that poor photographer spent trying to make her do that deep, sultry look she achieved on this cover. Like this guy is great. And has a great post production team given the retouching of that pic is good and unnoticeable, which is rare.

  12. She’s fresh faced and pretty, but I could go to a mall and see 217 girls who look a lot like her.

    • Naddie says:

This. Just like most of us, she can look gorgeous or average, depending on make up and clothes.

    • Nik says:

I get what you mean but I disagree. She doesn’t have a bombshell look or any odd/ unique features but I feel she’s pretty in a natural beauty type of way.

It’s the best look for an actress. She’s pretty enough to be a leading lady but not too gorgeous for it to be distracting or “unrealistic” if she wants to play an everyday woman-type character.

      • TreadStyle says:

Agree 100%. Her natural beauty is her advantage in my opinion. I think it’s a nice break from all the fakeness in appearances in hollywood today. I get tired of the Botox, boob jobs, heavy make up, and constant try to be sexy. There aren’t many left that forego those. But seeing the LV video made me think of Michelle Williams also being like that to me. She has a natural no fuss beauty as well.

  13. SusanneToo says:

The cover’s not great, but I’m a fan of AV. I loved her in ex Machina and Man From U.N.C.L.E and am awaiting the dvd of TOY, as it didn’t play here. I just find her very interesting on-screen and quite beautiful.

  14. Saywhatwhen says:

Meh galore!!! This young girl looks like all the young, French-speaking girls walking around in my neighbourhood. 3 day old unwashed hair, pretty, toned skin and totally forgettable once I walk by them. The stylists failed here. But maybe she lacks camera presence too.

  15. AlmondJoy says:

Can someone please remind me why people don’t like her? I can’t remember. I do think she’s gorgeous though.

    • Naddie says:

I think it’s because there’s nothing outstanding to justify the buzz around her. I’ve never seen her acting, but based on what I’ve read, she’s irregular.

    • Kiki says:

I think people don’t like her because she is cold in her interview. She maybe misunderstood as smug. I have my fair share of words towards her in past post, but I really want to like her but she needs to lighten up and have fun. She is too cold and stiff.

    • Mia4s says:

She’s actually talented to be honest. Which gives her points over many young actresses that are pushed on us.

    • AlmondJoy says:

Thanks, Naddie and Kiki. I haven’t seen any of her interviews or movies so I’m unable to form an opinion. I’ll be sure to look out for her though!

    • lobbit says:

Because she’s abashedly ambitious and doesn’t hide it.
      And because Michael Fassbender.

    • alice says:

Because she’s riding that Fassy D and she sounded pretty arrogant, way too ambitious and thirsty in some interviews. Ambition is a good thing in a young girl, but just don0t mix it with arrogance and self awareness. Every interviewer notes how shamelessly ambitious and driven she is. Even Fassy acknowledges this when talking about her. This girls wants so much to be famous and praised.

  16. BS says:

    She is so boring.

    • PennyLane says:

I love love love her tawny skin, but when your skin tone is the most memorable thing about you…yeah, not a lot of charisma going on there.

  17. Esteph says:

I think in person she comes across misunderstood if not boring TBH, but in her movies she has depth and is interesting when she gets into her roles.

  18. SugarMalone says:

Love her. Love Fassbender. Really hope that movie of theirs isn’t awful (I didn’t hate the book until the last 1/3 of the story – I’m hoping the screenwriter improves on it).

I saw THE DANISH GIRL at TIFF and I have to say that I came away much more impressed with her than Redmayne, perhaps because she made something really interesting out of the far less showy role. I also really, really loved TESTAMENT OF YOUTH – it’s one of my favourite movies of the year for sure. Everything I’ve seen of Vikander this year (aside from U.N.C.L.E. which was meh) has impressed me. She’s made smart choices with her roles so far.

That ELLE photo and interview, though – OOF! Not good.

  19. The Old KC says:

I watched “A Royal Affair” on Netflix, and I thought she was amazing. I get why she’s a thang. I like her and she brings intelligence and depth to her acting, in my opinion. Agreed that the Elle cover photo is from an awkward angle and doesn’t capture her beauty. Major girl-crush here!

  20. I Choose Me says:

I wish they’d let her smile on that cover. That cover is bland, she looks almost dour and the high waisted leather pants are not flattering. She looks great however in the black and white outfit below (except for the LV shoes which I’m not feeling at all). Her natural prettiness shines through.

  21. Saks says:

I like her and I find her super pretty… But this cover is terrible

  22. Sarah01 says:

She is a beautiful girl, these clothes are so boring and the whole look is boring.

  23. Andrea says:

She doesn’t seem to get much buzz on here either way, all things considering. I wonder how big she is and how much she is thrown at us?

I also wonder if she is hooking up with Fassy or if they never broke up?

  24. EN says:

There is nothing wrong with people perceived as boring in my book.
She is not boring, she is just not wild. There is a lot in between to cover.

She comes across as intelligent and with inner strength.

  25. Cupcake says:

*Yawn* Can we talk about Fassy instead?

  26. Moon says:

Something about her bothers me. I think she’s falling into the overhyped category, in that we are reading way too much about her but not seeing enough of her onscreen (too many flops) or hearing genuine buzz on the street – most of the buzz about her seems artificial. I admire her ambition but something about her just seems calculated and cold…

    • Andrea says:

I agree—-there is natural buzz and artificial buzz and her buzz seems manufactured. I saw her in the Royal Affair and while a good performance, I wasn’t blown away.

  27. Nicole says:

    Alicia Vikander: stunning or boring?

    I fixed your title.

  28. A~ says:

    Where is her neck?

  29. Tacos and TV says:

You guys write about her on this site and I still feel like “who?” constantly! I hate to say this but there isn’t that special quality I keep trying to find in her. She is like a bowl of oatmeal for me. As much as I don’t like Taylor Swift Bangs, I can see something in her that does pop, where as this girl blends in. I don’t know. I don’t think it’s gonna happen. Whatever is gonna happen has already happened and she will just float along. But yes, this spread is a BORE!

  30. Hannah says:

    Looks really pretty!

  31. Corrie says:

As the shoot goes, this is probably the worst cover of the Elle lot only because she so much more versatile and beautiful than this plc portrays. Bad pic select. But the interview i found lovely and i’m glad Michael didn’t’ mention love, just work. Keep it professional.

  32. petitehirondelle says:

you’re talking about buzz but she’is still unknown and many people will not know who she is or even recognize her if they meet her

  33. LMB says:

To me, she has the charisma of a toilet brush.

  34. ethel mertz says:

she has a cute face if you look at it just right. does she have a personality, though?

  35. krens says:

She is so forgettable. I think that is the reason she is a good actress, because she blends into whatever role she is playing. Not a good trait if she wants to be famous.

I dont get the hype about her. Would this site even cover her if it werent for this girl dating Fassbender? I think not.

    • EN says:

You are wrong, actually. She is talented. I am pretty sure she’ll be bigger than Fassbender in a few years.

      • krens says:

EN, I am sure she is talented and a good actress. I was stating that she lacks a certain celebrity presence. Like Emma stone, Jlaw, Emma watson, Margot robbie etcetra. I just dont see her being a big A list movie star. I am sure she will continue to get steady work, possibly in period dramas

      • Velvet, Crushed says:

As highly as I rate Fassbender, you may very well be correct.

  36. ds says:

I’ve just seen her in a Testament of youth, and she did a great job. Also, what’s wrong with her looking like many other pretty girls? I love it when an actress looks relatable. And she does have something. I would have definitely remember her after this film. And yes, she’s super boring in interviews and doesn’t have a good vibe personality vise. But I support hard working actresses who have talent and bring something more that just perfect hair to screen. Though she brings that too. So I guess I’m a Vikander supporter.

  37. Jesse says:

She’s so boring, just like her boyfriend Weinstein boy (aka Michael Fassbender). But this cover reflects her personality quite well. Another one bought by Harvey (these covers are all paid, especially hers, still a nobody to the general audience). I bet that in three years this girl will vanish.

  38. Uber says:

I loved her in Ex Machina; she was great in that. But having seen UNCLE too, and the Fifth Estate, I get the feeling she’s going to get typecast in girlfriend, sidekick, ingenue, etc type roles. She looks very young and I don’t know if casting directors can see her in darker, more intense, or more substantial roles. Can’t wait to see The Light B O though.

  39. rhea says:

Alright hold on a minute here, you can say the cover shot is mediocre, maybe it doesn’t do her justice, but to go as far as saying she looks HOMELY? Really?

  40. xena says:

    Boring and airbrushed covers.

  41. LAK says:

    Love the shoes.
