Carrie Underwood admits new shorter hairdo was a ‘mom move’

Carrie Underwood, the most radiant country singer out there (according to my boyfriend), shared details of her beauty regime with ELLE. Incidentally Carrie, 33, brought her adorable son Isaiah to help his Dad, currently playing for the Nashville Predators, celebrate his 1,000th NHL game on Monday. Carrie herself just reached an anniversary of her own, as 11 years ago yesterday, she won American Idol and was catapulted to stardom. Not to make you feel old or anything. Her latest song, “Heartbeat,” is her 23rd number one single. Not too shabby.

Carrie told ELLE that as far as fitness, she’s “up for anything” (and able to be cute doing it thanks to her line of workout clothes, Calia by Carrie Underwood) and enjoys running, weight training and kickboxing. She also talked about moving away from the old “the higher the hair, the closer to God” look rocked by many a country singer and revealed that she’s not adverse to buying her cosmetics at the drug store. Some highlights:

On what to wear to the gym: If you go to the gym in super baggy, super old sweatpants versus something that you actually feel good in, it just motivates your time there.

On her hair “donts”: There were some [looks] that I don’t think I would do now – I had big hair. I had a lot of big hair. And I like big hair, but I wouldn’t go back there again.

On chopping off her locks: Now that my hair is shorter, it’s easier to fix, which was the whole point. Cutting my hair was a “mom” move. I wash my hair every day and I know that’s not great for it, but I work out and I sweat a lot so I need to, and I’m on stage and I sweat even more. I could spend half an hour to blow it dry and have it be super long, or I could spend that time playing with my son, and I’d much rather do the latter.

On beauty on the cheap: Oh lordy, being a mom, half the time I’m like, ‘Did I put moisturizer on? Did I do that today?’ To be honest, whatever I can grab at a Walgreens is enough for me. I love drugstore makeup. I honestly don’t think there’s anything in my bag that’s expensive.

[From ELLE]

Even before this interview, I liked Carrie. I am taking baby steps into the world of country music, and she’s one of the few artists who has made it to my iPod. I love “Smoke Break” and “Heartbeat”. After this, I like her even more – especially after she recently posted a picture that perfectly sums up the motherhood experience. Too cute. It is also nice to know that someone else fell prey to the old shamrock tattoo. Ah, misguided youth.

This chick confuses me; she seems to be kinda a list but didn’t she come via the rat run that is American Idol?

    • Nancy says:

She came from American Idol, along with Kelly Clarkson and Adam Lambert. Still drinking first cup of coffee, so I can’t remember other big names. She’s A-List. If she hadn’t been exposed on that once star making show, she might be flipping burgers back home in Oklahoma. She’s paid her dues, probably even more so having come from television and in the first year being watched under a microscope. She’s the real deal, even if like me, you’re not a country music fan.

    • holly hobby says:

Jennifer Hudson – the AI with an Oscar.

I saw Clay Aiken talking about the NC primaries on CNN while I was working out. So he’s no longer singing? He’s a talking head?

      • Nancy says:

I forgot about Jennifer. Never liked Clay much. I remember when Carrie won her season. She was in Hollywood and Ryan Seacrest asked her if she had seen any stars yet. She said, well I haven’t been here at night yet….lol….thought he meant stars in the California sky. She was really a country bumpkin.

      • Ashley says:

Clay ran for something at some point a few years back… i think there was a reality show about it?

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She seems really sweet, and I like her hair a lot better this way. I wish I could wear drug store makeup, but it all smears on me or lasts for an hour and then it’s gone. I’ve tried most of the brands over the years, but I do think that more department store makeup is better and longer lasting.

    • Nancy says:

GNAT: I love all of Adrianne’s makeup products on HSN. It’s expensive, but worth it. I have about three or four tote bags she sends as gifts. My fav is her vanilla makeup removing cream. It smells fantastic and leaves your skin so soft. I would do a commercial for her if she gave me free products!

  3. Runcmc says:

I actually agree with her on the gym attire thing. I’m primarily a runner and feel like I get a psychological boost from dressing in cute clothes to train! But I also used to dress up for tests in college. Look good, feel good, perform better!

    • ab says:

I’m a sweatpants and old t-shirt exerciser. I have one pair of actual workout pants, and I usually save them for the odd yoga class. I get that carrie has an athletic wear line to shill, but I feel like women get so much pressure now to dress up and look cute just to go sweat at the gym or go for a run (or to the grocery store … I’m a SAHM so I am confronted on the daily by the athleisure trend).

  4. Alix says:

Now if she’d just tone down the eye makeup/false lashes, she wouldn’t look 10 years older than she really is.

  5. Kimbers says:

She’s a very beautiful and talented mom. She works hard.

  6. Magnoliarose says:

I’ve never really liked her styling but I can appreciate wanting a new hairstyle. Her makeup is too much. She is dangerously close to Melania Trump eye makeup and that’s something no one should aspire too.

I find for myself longer hair is easier. I wear plenty of ponytails, buns and topknots because I can air dry and am ready for exercising and Mommy duties.

  7. It'sJustBlanche says:

Her make up kills me, and not in a good way. She always looks like the meanest girl in the sorority house in a crappy Midwestern college.

    • QQ says:

same, same, her eyebrows are borderline Kaley Cuoco’s Sperm Brows territory

      • Sabrine says:

Carrie’s eyebrows are nothing like Kaley Cuoco’s tadpoles. Kaley has the worst celebrity eyebrows. They would be hard to beat and Carrie’s don’t even come close.

  8. Ramona Q. says:

Corey: Thank you for being kind to Carrie! Most articles about her on here are rather harsh.

  9. INeedANap says:

She’s always been refreshingly honest and a consummate professional. Team Carrie fo sho.

I would love for her to be my trainer.

  10. IrishEyes says:

Hair cut = taking out extensions.
I agree with y’all she needs to tone down the eye makeup.
Also, why is every celebrity suddenly a lifestyle or fitness guru? Its annoying. I could be a fitness guru if i wasn’t chained to my desk for 8 hours a day and then cooking, cleaning, doing homework and laundry

  11. Ashley says:

I love her music, heartbeat is everything. Congrats to her on everything.

  12. Bobo says:

I get her and Kristin Cavallari mixed up.

  13. Pumpkin Pie says:

I wonder what make-up brands she uses in case she is vegan for ethical reasons. I read somewhere she is vegan.
