E!: Jennifer Garner should start her own ‘lifestyle brand’ like so many of her peers

Exclusive... Jennifer Garner Takes Her Son To Breakfast
A couple of weeks ago, Buzzfeed published a long piece analyzing Jennifer Garner’s PR moves and career. They quoted Lainey Gossip, who references Garner’s appeal to the “minivan majority,” or moms who think she’s just wonderful. They also cited Matt Damon, who threw shade on Garner in 2013 by saying she gets papped because “she sells a s–tload of magazines in the midwest. Magazines that – Ben explained this to me – you and I have never heard of, but that appeal to a mom in the midwest, who for some reason identifies with Jennifer and wants to know what she’s doing as a mom. As a result of that, there are always five cars outside their house.” Garner cultivated that appeal of course, and one way she did that was through her kind of very casual, down-to-earth style. E! has a new story which is similar to Buzzfeed’s piece and talks about Garner’s style as it relates to her branding.

I used to think she didn’t care about her style at all, but given how carefully she orchestrated her divorce and the PR blitz surrounding that, I’m sure her no-makeup day-to-day look is somewhat strategic. E! examines this:

In the eyes of the fashion elite, Jennifer Garner’s style may not be particularly groundbreaking; it’s neither avant-garde nor trendy.

Call it a lack of polish, if you will—but Jen represents what Lainey Gossip and Buzzfeed has called the “Minivan Majority.” Should she choose, the Miracle From Heaven star could market her everyday look into a full-fledged lifestyle brand—to the delight of mainstream mothers everywhere. Think: Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James without the prep or Gwyneth Paltrow’s goop…without the goopiness.

Hate or love it, there’s power in Jen’s style sensibilities—here’s why.

In just over a decade, Jennifer went from Maxim’s “Sexiest Woman Alive” and barely there Alias costumes to walking around town, bare-faced in jeans and a comfortable sweater. It’s a refreshing perception of celebrity that’s so relatable that not even the fashion elite can ignore her mass appeal. Granted, this is the same set that might trash talk her style behind closed doors, but in editorials, angle it as “casual-cool,” “effortless” or another FC (fashionably correct) synonym.

“This native West Virginian’s relaxed, unpretentious style has made her arguably one of the most respected public mothers in America and still a draw at the box office,” wrote Krista Smith of Vanity Fair…

It’s this take on practical fashion that makes her popular, especially to those attracted to the wholesome, all-American lifestyle.

Author Diana Nguyen goes on to quote Garner making fun of her style in her “aw shucks” way, like the bawdy story she told on The Tonight Show about being unable to go to the bathroom in her dress with the elaborate corset underneath. In a 2014 Allure interview, she also claimed to have worn pajamas to class every day when she was in college. Nguyen admits she’s not a fan of Garner’s style but said that there’s a kind of business reason for it. As I always say, I bought into Garner’s image until just a few years ago when I realized how carefully she controlled it. She could sell anything, and she’s been selling herself as an everymom for a while. I don’t think her fashion is aspirational by any stretch, and her shoes are usually overpriced and fug, but a Jennifer Garner clothing line would sell. She should sell haircare products. She’s tight with her hairdresser and her hair looks healthy usually.

Also it’s Friday. Do you think Ben and Jen will file for divorce this afternoon around 5pm pacific time?

Lifestyle “bland” is what I read.

  2. sofie says:

God not another lifestyle brand. It’s bad enough with the out of work actress blogs that we already have. Why don’t these people do something like take courses learn something new, travel the world, instead of just peddling beauty and other useless products.

      ita

she’s more than rich enough. why throw your name on something just because you can? it seems so vain and unnecessary.

  3. lila fowler says:

No. Who needs this dull basic telling them how to do anything? Other basics?

  4. Dirtnap says:

Nah, I see a “Jen 4 Jesus” Bible study brand targeted to moms in Jen’s future. Bibles printed with designer paper, bible study webcasts just for mothers, sensible book bags with scripture printed in the lining. I say that with no disrepect or shade. I seriously think she could sell it.

  5. dawn says:

I disagree with this lifestyle branding. She should stick to acting. I am sick of celebrity cashing in by doing nothing but adding their name to a product. The designers should get the credit because it is their work and no one else. When I see anything celebrity endorsed brand or a brand that tries to imply the celebrity designed it, I simply walk a way.

  6. Jayna says:

I’m confused. Mini van moms rarely compliment her on her day to day outfits, So a clothing line? LOL She doesn’t even like clothes and admits she has zero style. I doubt she will be out there schilling them.

  7. swak says:

Do we really need another lifestyle brand from ANYONE? At some point the market has to become oversaturated.

  8. Lora says:

How about laying low for a couple of months? Make us ‘miss’ you jen!

  9. mj says:

She has a brand. She sells kids’ stuff like double blankets. I don’t have the link, but yeah she already does the lifestyle thing.

    • JoJo says:

She has a kids’ crafts line for Jo-Ann Fabrics, if that’s what you’re thinking of?

    • Katenotkatie says:

I think she actually tried to do a hair care line too, right around the time Jennifer Aniston and Katie Holmes starting hawking theirs. I think it was called Undone or something- it didn’t last, obviously.

  10. JoJo says:

The fact that she had to specifically highlight how “down to earth” she is on Dr. Oz and how living in LA under pap scrutiny just brings out her “down to earthness even more” kinds of kills the authenticity/sincerity of the image she pushes for me, along with many other things. Kind of like how in my day job, companies who constantly need to say they’re “a leader” probably aren’t. I buy that she doesn’t care much about fashion (clearly), so I guess it’s just the way she rabidly seems to try to control the image of her marriage/family that bugs me. But I guess that’s also a big part of what makes her a minivan majority favorite!

Guessing they won’t file today …

  11. Boxy Lady says:

I suppose she could. But I would rather she didn’t.

  12. JoJo says:

I feel like they are laying low this week, aside from the moving vans on two separate days. Are they laying low because they’re about to file?

  13. CL says:

Her lifestyle brand should be called:

    Vanilla

  14. tealily says:

“Buy your sweaters slightly to wide for your body.”
“Buy your jeans slightly too short for your legs. These pair best with ugly brown shoes!”

  15. Don't kill me I'm French says:

Her taste about shoes is very ugly

  16. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

No. Just no to the lifestyle brand. I want Jen to have a torrid affair with some dirty sexy guy (and magically, her children will never learn of it.) As I mentioned before, when I saw them present together at the Oscar’s, I thought YES! Benicio De Toro!

  17. b says:

I don’t buy what she’s selling. This image of frumpy “look at me I’m a mom I don’t even care what i look like! I’m like you!!” My sister is a stay at home mother of 3 and busy all day long, running around and taking the girls to gymnastics and whatever sport and plain old mom stuff. She always looks put together and looks stylish. Shes doesn’t have really expensive stuff. She loves TJ Maxx. There is no reason to lose yourself and not make yourself feel good because you’re a mom. “Mini-van moms” don’t necessarily look like Jennifer Garner.
