Susan Boyle on Oprah with Simon Cowell, turns down White House invite

Simon Cowell was on Oprah yesterday to showcase new talent. He talked about the popularity of talent shows, which he claimed “brought Democracy back to the world” by giving underdogs a chance. Simon addressed the rumors that he’s not coming back to American Idol, and admitted that his contract was up this year but hinted that he would be open to continuing it.

Cowell on Susan Boyle’s unexpected fame
I shot this three months ago. I’m sitting in bed one morning watching the news in America, and I’m watching Susan Boyle in Scotland. It was the most surreal thing that ever happened.

Cowell on hearing Boyle sing for the first time
All I remember was I was having a horrible day, really grumpy, because I don’t like doing auditions. This lady came up, and I’m kind of thinking, ‘This will take five seconds, and I can go have a cup of tea… everything changed when she started singing.

There was something Susan said before she came out on stage…”I’m going to rock this audience.” She knew we were going to have that reaction, and just to see that look of satisfaction on her face midway through—it was one of my favorite moments.

Cowell on whether he’ll stay on American Idol
The truth is that I did sign a contract for a period of time, which meant last year was my last year. I’d agreed at the end of that time period, that was it…

I genuinely enjoy working in America. So you try to keep a door open.

There was also a much-anticipated home visit and interview via satellite with sensational Scottish singer Susan Boyle, who was as good natured and friendly on camera as we’ve come to expect. She didn’t sing, though, which was a disappointment.

Boyle on getting her start in singing
I was kind of a slow learner at school, so getting something like singing was a good way of hiding behind that and so boosting my confidence. I sang at karaokes, which most people do for fun. And I did sing at one or two occasions within the family.

Boyle on her instant fame
It’s pretty awesome… I’m really enjoying every second of it, it’s like a dream come true.

Boyle on her mini-makeover
[Furrowed her brow] Depends what you mean by a makeover [laughs]
My best friend actually helps me with my makeup. You know, that’s hardly a makeover.

I did a bit [in answer to Oprah’s question about her haircut and color] but that was just to tidy myself up like any other female would have done.

Cowell told her it’s all about her and her singing voice, and he gave his congratulations and wished her the best of luck. He said she has a chance to win, but that she still has to compete. Boyle said “there’s a lot of good talent on the show… I’m willing to take my place with them.”

I’ve said it before but I can’t wait to see what this lady sings next. She’s got talent and heart and let’s hope she wins the competition. Even if Boyle is somehow voted out, as there does seem to be some stiff competition this season, she’s got a bright future ahead of her and a lot of opportunities.

Update: There’s also news that Boyle turned down a much-coveted invitation to the White House Correspondent’s Dinner, preferring to stay home in Scotland and lay low.

What an awesome lady.. she said it like it was “I did tidy myself up a bit like any other woman would do”

    Well said Susan!

You GO, girl! All the way!

  3. georgiagrl says:

All publicity is being controlled around this woman to sell records and for the debute of America’s Got Talent this summer. She’s gone back to looking frumpy and doing less interviews why? So Cowell can make millions of her on his shows and “reveal” her new look all over again. That’s why she “turned down” the WH!

  4. Livia says:

She had to turn down the invite – from what I’ve read, it’s in her contract with Britain’s Got Talent that she (like all the other contestants) can’t accept any public engagements until after the show is over.

She is so beautifully modest. Its a breath of fresh air form the tiring “diva” thing.

I’m already tired of hearing about her.
