Bella Thorne on online bullying: ‘it sucks, it’s so much worse for me’

Bella Thorne is a bit of a head-scratcher for me. Like most of you, I see her multiple grabs to stay relevant and wish she wouldn’t try so hard. However, I find myself often agreeing with her. I think she is perceived as messy in a figurative sense. She lives out loud but that’s not really uncommon for someone that age. Bella recently spoke about feeling bullied online after she was accused of cheating on an ex. In her interview, she doesn’t name the ex but the internet is under the impression the story has to do with Charlie Pugh and Tyler Posey. Briefly: Bella broke up with boyfriend Gregg Sulkin. Afterwards, she did what most people do when they get out of a long-term relationship and played the field. She dated Posey for a bit and and then moved on to Puth. Bella posted a throwback pic of her and Tyler and Twitter accused her of cheating on Puth. Puth took Twitter at their word and told them he was going to tap out of the situation. Bella responded by saying this was nuts, she and Posey had been broken up for weeks and Puth should have asked her, not Twitter, to clear things up but it doesn’t matter because she and Puth were only just friends anyway. See? Messy.

The problem is that you and I can walk away from messy with little more than an eye roll. But social media can’t and they went after Bella hard, which left her a bit bereft. Having rallied, Bella is speaking out against this treatment and saying she will not stand for bullying of any kind.

Bella Thorne is learning to listen to herself over the haters.

The former Shake It Up! actress tells PEOPLE that, although she is in the process of getting her happy back, she admits she wrestles with how much attention to pay to negative comments from Internet critics.

“It’s hard. I was in a happier place [a while ago] than I had been recently,” says Thorne, 19. “And now I’m back to a happier place.”
The Disney Channel alum revealed that her split from an ex was a trying time in her life and that she was deeply affected by the negative comments from social media users who assumed she’d cheated.

The actress shares that after she a split from an ex, she “was getting death threats for a hot minute because they thought I had cheated on my ex, which is a total lie.”

“When I woke up that morning — it f—ing sucks,” she recalls of the moment she got backlash from social media users. “It doesn’t feel good to think that everybody in the world just thinks you’re an absolutely disgusting person and just because I’m somebody where people know my name, it’s so much worse for me.”

She continues, “And people think that, like, we don’t get bullied in Hollywood — but we do! We get bullied by the public eye and fans and it’s really, let me tell you, it f—ing hurts.”

“I’m letting kids know like, ‘If somebody’s being rude to you, you have the right to stick up for yourself!’ When I see [bullying] on other people’s pages, I respond because it irks me to my core.”

[From People]

For those of you unaware, Bella has spoken out about bullying before. She has faced many challenges: poverty, severe acne and dyslexia and been very open about all of them and the backlash she endured because of them. It’s easy to dismiss a celebrity crying foul over the bullying on social media. We all have a version of “then get off” running in the back of our minds. But I am standing up for Bella on this because there are so many instances of kids being bullied online and no one really knows how to handle it. Maybe an actor needs a thicker skin when it comes to their appearance or performance but most younger kids shouldn’t have to. I like hearing someone speaking up for them. Playgrounds are tough enough, no accountability makes them terrifying. I like that she will comment when she sees examples of this online, it probably makes that person feel someone has their back.

And for the love of Pete, can people stop with the death threats? Honestly – that’s not messy, that’s a crime.

I agree with you re: online bullying and bullying on social media. The problem is, the bullied person has nowhere to hide. before, bullying was at school, or somewhere and you could still return to the safety of your home. But in this day and age, the bullying never stops.
There was a case in my niece’s class a year ago….several kids formed a mobile phone group and bullied another girl on all social apps there are. They were only 11!
Unrelated with the bullying-I can’t stand Bella Thorne. She’s so thirsty it’s not even funny.

Honestly I’m sorry but I can’t this girl is just A LOT to deal with with barely a proper career to be followed, Like this isn’t even a CW person *leaves smh this is gonna be the last time i’m paying her mind Valid Point of not*

      hahahha, THIS!

    • Lynnie says:

I agree, the thirst for a career with her is REAL.

As for the whole cheating thing I honestly don’t even know what to think. So many tweets and deletes between all three of them, but I did get the impression that Bella was being creative with her timeline between the two of them. Death threats towards her is a bit much though.

Side note, I keep on seeing everywhere that she looks like Jeffree Star and I never saw the resemblance until I looked at the second photo. Now I can’t unsee it lol

    • OrigialTessa says:

Yeah, I agree. I’m trying not to be snarky because she’s like half my age, and I’m hardly her demographic, but who is she and why is she crying in a magazine? I want the old days back when people leading glamorous privileged lives didn’t air every little thing about themselves to the public and just let us believe they lived some kind of ideal happy life. Every single young starlet seems completely self absorbed and frankly depressed and apoplectic. Perhaps they should all go to college and save themselves the torture.

      • QQ says:

This THIS THIS!! she is like professionally thirsty even if you wanna parse or try to not hold her youth/extraness against her and if she makes good points it’s sort of like Demi Lovato: Always whining and always in our mouth for all the wrong reasons, often, self created pettiness

I don’t think it’s quite so simple, because part of the larger context is that Bella’s fame and notoriety are directly related to her social media presence. While I don’t think it means she should be bullied, I think it’s also important to realize that younger social media stars like Bella are actively asking their fans to engage with them and in a sense participate in their lives, and THAT is the larger problem. Social media blurs boundaries in a way that are extremely unhealthy, and this is a prime example.

    • Neelyo says:

Live by the tweet, die by the tweet (or something like that).

But i agree, lines get blurred on social media engagement.

      • Bridget says:

This is what the social media stars don’t get. They’re inviting their fans to participate in their lives, and don’t seem to realize that means both the fun stuff and the CRAZY. There’s a reason why boundaries are important. But the truth is, Bella doesn’t have anything without her social media, so this is her bargain. Is it worth it?

    • geekychick says:

Yes, that was one of the things I wanted to allude, but honestly when I’m tired and cranky, my English just won’t cooperate. I do appreciate what Bella is saying, and I am against bullying of any kind-but let’s not forget that the base of her career is her social media presence and her looks–by that I mean her looks captured by paparazzi. She has two brands:
a)a social media presence for her teenage/young fans
      b) paparazzi and social media presence for old creepsters like on The Superficial
I just can’t take her seriously. ALL of her “campaigns” are like this. She remembered to open up about her bisexuality with staged pap pictures of herself with her brothers former girlfriend. I mean….good for you, but come on. That’s a serious matter, not a click bait. I get the impression all of those topics are actually just a click-bait in her mind.

The thing Is though that heterosexual celebrities have gotten to use their relationships to draw attention to themselves and whatever they were promoting for the longest time. So the fact that there are gay, pansexual, and bisexual celebrities getting to play that same game doesn’t really feel like a step back for us.

Bella lives for drama, it’s the only way for her to stay relevant.
Of course, some people have been awful with her but I can’t really feel bad for her.

  5. Locke Lamora says:

That Charlie guy seems like a dick, doesn’t he?

  6. CornyBlue says:

It is obviously extremely bad that she was bullied and literally no innocent person ever should get death threats over ending a relationship. That being said, she lived her entire relationship with Posey out in the public and retweeted stuff fans had t say about them, so like she should expect some amount of fan involvement in the break up as well.
I used to find her very odd and but she is 19 years old. She will learn. Also she literally does nothing except generate new about herself. What kind of talent.

  7. Lalu says:

It is beyond creepy that there are people that think it is okay to send death threats to someone they don’t know over them possibly cheating on a boyfriend. That is just weird.
Can’t stand bullies. Also, the internet is a strange place.

  8. Lucy says:

I completely agree. That being said, it’s not a competition, Bella.

  9. Michelle says:

My question is…did she actually think that she wouldn’t get any comments or backlash from posting a pic of her and Posey when she is supposedly dating Puth? Some fans are very passionate about the celebrities they follow and when they see their favorite celeb getting treated wrongly, the claws come out. I am not condoning bullying AT ALL, but she brought this upon herself. And for the ones that are posting the death threats, grow tf up.

  10. nicegirl says:

I think the social media bullying and the backlash folks get for posting their own pictures of happy is absolutely gross. My son is 18, a senior in high school, and I had a no facebook rule until last January because of the harassment crap that happens online.

Folks should be supportive of one another. It is all we have.

  11. Pandy says:

Oh who cares? Get off social media then. Jesus.

  12. Llamas says:

It’s “so much worse” for her?!?!?

I was beaten up by people along with other types of bullying. And other people have it wayyy worse than me too: rapings, in person threats, beatings. She needs to shut her mouth because the “I have it so much worse than others poor me” game is a really sh*tty one. I can’t sympathize with her after that one. She’s clueless and thirsty.

  13. vix says:

Sad to still see someone (C. Puth) pretending to be straight … it’s not the 60s anymore, you’re not going to lose fans if you come out, stop with the fake relationships dude
