Sad news has hit Hollywood. Famously close, resilient couple Bradley Whitford and Jane Kaczmarek have filed for divorce. Whitford is most famous for his Emmy Award-winning portrayal of Josh Lyman through eight seasons of The West Wing. Kaczmarek is famous for her seven-times Emmy-nominated performance as Lois, Malcolm’s mother in Malcolm in the Middle. Bradley and Jane had been together for more than 17 years, and they have three children together: Frances, 12, George, 9 and Mary Louisa, 6.
Actor Bradley Whitford and wife Jane Kaczmarek filed divorce papers Friday in Los Angeles, PEOPLE has confirmed.
“He hopes the media will respect their wish for privacy as they focus on their children,” says a rep for Whitford.
The former West Wing star and Malcolm in the Middle mom were married in August 1992, and have three children, Frances Genevieve, 12, George Edward, 9, and Mary Louisa, 6.

Though their on-screen characters have tended to be on the crazy side, both Bradley and Jane are known are rather famous off-screen for their wholesome, salt-of-the-earth, family-oriented, charitable images. Both are Wisconsin born and bred, and they always seemed like one of the most stable couples in Hollywood – like the Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson of television. I have my fingers crossed that they’re not divorcing for some horrible reason like infidelity or some kind of substance abuse. I’m praying for “they just grew apart” or something like that.

I live in Wisconsin and one of my girlfriends used to work at the Milwaukee Public Museum and said she saw them there a few times with their kids around the holidays and that they were always gracious and down-to-earth. Jane even came into the materinity store I used to work at when she was pregnant with her youngest (on my day off, of course!). My coworkers raved about how funny and sweet she was to them. She even made a comment about how she always bought her maternity clothes when visiting home because the prices were so much more reasonable here than in LA! I’m totally bummed!

When Whitford won his Emmy, in his speech he spoke about his wife in such a beautiful, loving way, it was so sweet to watch. What a shame.

I wish we could completely blame Holly-hellwood, but seriously, how many couples make it to 17 years?

There is definitely much more to this story-when I see this in real life, it’s usually an affair…so sad for everyone involved, especially the kids.

I was so sad when I read this on Friday. I guess that is the standard hollywood divorce announcement time, weekends or holiday to downplay it I guess. I love her down to earth style and I always thought he was so cute. I have a thing for redheads! I wish they could work it out but who knows what really happens! Best of luck to the kids.
