Over the past 10 years, every time I’ve had to book a flight, and I look at options for where to fly out of, I shake my head at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport. Im reminded of this interview everytime I fly.
I actually had no idea about him, honestly, but am glad to be educated. I haven’t had much exposure to John Wayne, just know who he is, but wow, is this bad. What an awful person he was. Ugh. I wonder if he got backlash at the time for his views, or was it acceptable? Off to Google…

I’d be more surprised if the (repugnant, reclusive, misogynistic, narcissistic, reptilian, grandiose, manipulative) Heff *hadn’t* greenlighted such a piece from good ol’ Marion Wayne, toupee wearing, draft dodging, misogynist and racist. The piece is relevant because you have a President who shares an alarming number of characteristics with the long-defunct inaction hero.
-I don’t believe the tripe re: not speaking ill of the dead. History would be erased, hideous acts of savagery forgotten, were we to tacitly go along with the ridiculous notion that in death, individuals are sanctified and “cannot defend themselves”. Their lives are composed of a series of events, good and bad, which they could have endeavoured to turn into something to venerate. Wayne, Castro, Nixon, Mao – none should be immune.

LOL, there have been plenty of thinkpieces about how awful a person John Wayne was. This article doesn’t at all shock me considering everything we’ve heard before. He hit all the buttons for worst of white American white men had to offer back then – he just benefited immensely from dying before the age of mass media. Had his movies lasted in popularity beyond the time period beyond the mid-century, this would’ve been bigger news much earlier.
When people say, “Times were different then” it bugs me to no end. I grew up in the 70s. We didn’t have to say “Fa***ts” because we had the word “Homosexual.” Later, we had the word “Gay.” And there were tons of us that would never say anything like he said about other races. White Ass*hole Privilege. We had a choice back then just like we have a choice now. Apparently only decent people are aware of this fact.

It was illegal to be gay in the 50s and the 60s. People were put in hospitals. The insanity of homophobia was very real. Hence it was ok to call gays every name in the book. Sad times. Still, not much progress since people still have to hide their sexuality or they will lose jobs or families and in some cases, fans.
I’ll say times were different then, not to excuse his homophobic comments, but as a statement of fact. Segregated water fountains “Whites” and “Coloreds” were allowed by law until 1964. It was illegal to engage in sodomy IN PRIVATE in Texas until the Supreme Court ruled in 2003 (in a 6-3 decision, if that doesn’t scare you). As a young child, I heard and saw terrible things. I’m saying this so you realize times HAVE changed, and God knows, they have a long way to go still.
If you have to cancel everyone dead who ever said, thought or did anything racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, bigoted, criminal etc. you will literally be left with no heroes or heroines from history. Also if you take it to its ultimate conclusion there will be products and services you cant use, land you cant live on etc… No one withstands scrutiny. The guy was born in 1907 and was a white American, what do you expect. He was a product of his time, let it be.
I get what you’re saying but I think it’s imortant to remember that he also chose to be who he was. There were lots of people in his generation; also products of their time who chose to do better and be better. I totally get the argument but it’s also a total cop out.
Know who else was a product of their time? Also born in 1907 and white? Katharine Hepburn. Laurence Olivier. Robert Heinlein. Rachel Carson. Rabbi Abraham Heschel (look him up). Charles Eames. (Chief Justice) Warren Burger. Orville Redenbacher. Barbara Stanwyck. And a lot of future Nazis.

My grandmother was born around then and she did none of those things. She was English and German, so not a person of color, either. Those types of things and the racist thoughts and words were not part of my upbringing from my father’s side. Now my mother was racist due to her father being attacked numerous times by mobs of poc men trying to make them leave town due to their being Native American. I choose to look at a person individually, rather than paint everyone with the same brush, and John Wayne was scum.
We have people born in the 1980s who did/do bad things and people born in the 1900s who did good things. Not all born in 1907 were racist or politically conservative.
Considering people fought for black freedom and rights back when slavery was still legal in the states, I think we can safely suggest somebody who engages in racist rhetoric in the 1900s is you know, choosing to be a POS. This ain’t your grandma using the term “N*gro” because it was the polite word in her time.
Your argument is a strawman’s anyway. People’s actions exist on a spectrum beyond “hero” and “garbage.” We can say “John Wayne was in some good movies” and also refuse to extol his legacy as anything meaningful or good. Or even this idea that legacies cannot be re-evaluated. History gets rewritten all the time. America loves doing it, in fact.

I hate John Wayne. I remember when he died, you would have thought it was a president who died and not an actor (or at least in my town). My ex-h loves (to this day) John Wayne. I used to tell him that JW wore a hairpiece (which he did) and it would completely unhinge my ex. I also used to make fun the way he talked in movies, I’d go around the house talking like him while my ex was watching one of his old westerns. Yeah, that marriage didn’t last long. LOL

I always knew John Wayne was an awful person and a racist. So I have always found it weird that all of his wives (3, I think) were Latina. Like, what happened there?!
A combo of them being one of the “good ones” according to him, he probably got off over the whole “exotic” thing, and the people who hate things the most are usually the ones secretly obsessed with it.
Latina also just means having South American heritage, not necessarily being non-white. Josephine’s parents immigrated to Latin American from Spain, so she was white Hispanic. Esperanza was actually Spanish-American, not Hispanic. Pilar is the only one who is Latino and whose appearance may suggest mixed ancestry, but her father was a Peruvian Senator, so she came from money.
Yep, planned to say something similar. Cameron Diaz, Alexis Bledel, and Christina Aguilera are all white Latinas.
Just want to interject with this, Hispanic means you come from a country where Spanish is the primary language. Anyone from Spain is Hispanic but not Latinx (from Latin America) in the same way folks from Brazil are Latinx but not Hispanic.

Apparently, when he worked with Rock Hudson Wayne initially made a few gay jokes, but then stopped, and after that they got on really well. He was a mass of contradictions, as are many people.
