Scarlett Johansson on Gwyneth Paltrow: “She’s out of the loop”

Iron Man 2 Panel at The San Diego Comic Con in CA
There have been rumors about tension between Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow for months. It all started when Iron Man 2 was being filmed, and reports started leaking that Gwyneth was upset with all the attention ScarJo got from cast and crew, especially when ScarJo donned her skintight catsuit.

The drama escalated with last week’s Entertainment Weekly preview of Iron Man 2 - in which Gwyneth was mysteriously absent from the promotional images. Reportedly, Gwyenth was furious, although her rep formally denied it. The report at that time was that Gwyneth was in such a snit, she would pull out of some of her promotional duties until producers started giving her the star treatment. I thought there was something to that report - especially given that Gwyneth didn’t show up for Comic-Con with the rest of the cast.

Meanwhile, Scarlett has been trying to do some damage control as she does advanced press for Iron Man 2. There were some vague reports that ScarJo sort of denied that there was tension between her and Paltrow, and now Io9 has a new interview where ScarJo tries her best to end the rumors. ScarJo’s defense? That Goopy is “out of the loop” because she spends so much time with her “wonderful family”.

Io9: Are there any truth rumors about the cat fight between you and Gwyneth Paltrow?
SJ: No, nothing could be further from the truth. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about working with her. Well, she’s very much out of the loop. She’s very much out of the loop, you know — she’s got a wonderful family whom she spends a lot of time with. So for her, she’s like, “What’s going on? What?” And of course Jon [Favreau] who’s on his Twitter, he’s crazy about any kind of news about anything. He’s like “You haven’t heard? You haven’t heard?” And he comes onto set and we’re both like, “Oh god.” Every time I would say to Gwyneth, “Oh yeah, that was on the seventh,” and she’d say, “Are you sure it wasn’t on the sixth?” He’d [Favreau] yell, “what? It’s a cat fight! It’s breaking out.”

Io9: The last thing they were saying is that she was in New York purposely snubbing Comic Con because you were going to get all of the attention.
SJ: Believe me she’s worthy of plenty of attention and I know that that fans love her and they are going to love to see her in this movie, because her character kind of comes into her own. I know she would love to be here as well, but she’s with her family.

[From io9]

Here’s what I think is really happening: there was some on-set tension because Gwyneth was no longer the only girl in the all-boys-club of Iron Man 2, but there wasn’t this huge catfight like the tabloids made it out to be. I also think that ScarJo is being pushed more heavily than Gwyneth because ScarJo is “hotter” right now, and producers want to increase the buzz. ScarJo brings more buzz than Goopy, plain and simple. That being said, I don’t think Gwyneth is being meangirled, I just think Gwyneth is trying and failing to pull star-rank on producers, and they aren’t playing.

  1. I wish Gwyneth wouldn’t cover herself up in photographs like that, it just seems weird.

The pictures are going to be taken either way, why let yourself look like such an idiot?

  4. This just reinforces my point on how amazing ScarJo is. she’ may not be the most talented actress out there, but she’s gorgeous and seems pretty down to earth and sweet. a real Class Act. Take the goopy (she no longer even deserves the capital G)

  5. When was she ever the hot girl? She wasn’t impressive in the first Iron Man and it makes sense they would want to promote the hot villain in the second.

  6. @ Anna: LOL!

Goop hasn’t been relevant since the days she was engaged to Brad Pitt..

  7. Scarlett was a real class act here, but I doubt she really likes Gwyneth and her pompous ass.
Goopy was never relevant. In her Oscar year, she was the nominee people cared less about. Harvey Weinstein bought her the award. Now she’s some spoiled rich brat with delusions of grandeur, a strange hybrid of psycho-Oprah and psycho-Martha Stewart.

  8. I loved GP in “Shakespeare in Love” and “Sliding Doors,” but Hollywood is unkind to (most) actresses in their mid/late 30s (I know there are exceptions) and I thought GP was dreadful in “Iron Man,” perhaps because it was a terribly written part, perhaps for other reasons. It’s no surprise SJ’s “it girl” status is eclipsing Gwyneth. I also think Scarlett’s sound bytes are worthy of analysis. She says “I have nothing but wonderful things to say…”: this is because she’s smart and she knows how to face the press. At least in this interview.

  10. omg, I really liked Pepper Potts!! I thought gp was good in that role, bc she appeared to be very down to earth (which I’m assuming Pepper is), and I don’t really care for her personally.

  12. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love and Sliding Doors.

I gottasay, I’ve enjoyed Scarlett in Woody Allen films and Girl in the Pearl Earring.

Contest or conflict between them? I’ll give it a no vote = )

  13. Regardless of what GP does or says in her personal life, I’ve always enjoyed 99% of her movies. She really is a good actor.

  14. This happened before.

Scarlett didn’t get along with Natalie Portman and they had to do some PR damage control for that too.

She also made sure she gets diva demands that would upstage Penelop Cruz when they worked together.

I think she probably makes sure that she is treated like the n. 1 star, and is quite competitive with the other ladies.

  15. cannot BELIEVE i’m about to defend Goopy…. ScarJo’s “family” comment is going to come back to haunt her someday. If there’s any tension betwen these two, i’d imagine this is where it stems from given Mr. ScarJo’s comments about adopting earlier this week.

  18. I thought she was rather endearing in Iron Man. Im not even a huge fan but she’s not a bad actress. She can be wonderful sometimes. She and Robert had a nice chemistry.

I loved her line at the end about the night that he went to get her a drink and never came back. Very well delivered.

  20. I really didn’t like GP in Iron Man 1 at all. When she spoke it sounded like she had a speech impediment. It was so annoying to listen to.

  21. Annie, people don’t like Gwyneth because of her own dumb statements. She dissed her own country while sitting in a comfortable chair in London (if you have criticism of the americans, at least, say something meaningful and less dumb than “The United States are stupid…blah…blah. And I bet she would keep her mouth shut about anything if she was in L.A), she said she couldn’t act like someone who “earned 25.000 dollars a year”, she makes an elitist website that recommends 6000 dollars bags as “gifts” (in the times of recession, for God’s sake) and tries to be some kind of “Oprah” at the same time, she said her friend Mario Batali had to lose weight because he is “the only fat friend” she had (because “fat” people have no right to speak to her Highness Paltrow), she said she was vegan and posed with fur, etc…and she married that whiner Chris Martin to boot. In fact, there are so many unlikeable facts about her that one would have a hard time trying to list them all. I used to like her in the fact, but now it’s impossible to like her at all.

  22. I love love LOVED Gwyneth in Emma. Sliding Doors, Shakespeare in Love, The Royal Tenenbaums, she’s got some good films under her belt. I’m one of the few who thinks her oscar is well-deserved… I think the tension is Scarlett’s fault, I agree she seems like she promotes tension with her female co-stars, where as Gwyneth has many many famous female friends that she doesn’t seem competitive with: Cameron Diaz, Madonna, Stella McCartney, Beyonce, etc. As much as people don’t like her, Gwyneth is very popular in Hollywood.

Gwyneth seems a little disconnected from the everyday peasant Walmart reality (lol), but Scarlett seems to think she’s the hottest ticket in town and acts like a brat. I can’t name any famous female friends of hers, which leads me to think she has none. And she’s had plenty of opportunity with costars like Natalie Portman, Penelope Cruz, and the entire cast of He’s Just Not That Into You.

After that snotty comment about how Brits handled getting bombed better than Americans did on 9/11, she’s been on my personal hate list.

“To London’s Evening Standard in December 2005: “I find the English amazing how they got over 7/7. There were no multiple memorials with people sobbing as they would have been in America. There, they are constantly scaring people but at the same time, people think nothing of going to see a therapist.””

Of all the low garbage. She’s been insulting a country BUILT on trade and hard work and lifting oneself up by their boots.

  24. Elisabetta, your points about ScarJo are pure speculation and gossip. You have no facts.

Natalie and ScarJo gushed all over each other in a tv interview for that movie. I really thought they were going to kiss each other. If that was fake, they are WAY better actresses than given credit for.

I personally would cut ScarJO a break; she married a total douche. I’m sure that makes a girl pissy sometimes. I think she’s a down-to-earth most of the time, unlike, Gwyneth, who is a pompus stuck-up bitch all the time.

Goopy has made so many insulting statements about Americans, other actresses (HELLO–Winona!), Hollywood, and the little people making only $25,000 a year. Her only friend seems to be Madonna–another pompous ass. If that’s your idea of a good friend . . . Madonna doesn’t even speak to most of her family, because she has this habit of treating them like servants. Rupert Everett talked about her and Goopy getting together at a party and making fun of J.Lo. They sound like such snobby c*unts.

  26. I agree Marianne and Sakota. That quote about 9/11 victims really burns me. How DARE she criticize Americans for how they choose to grieve for their loved ones? Didn’t she talk about her own grief for her dead father in an interview? She sounded like a baby, talking about her “rough year” over and over. What a class-A idiot and total hypocrite.

  29. @ hello!

I agree that Gwyneth doesn’t understand/sympathize with the $25,000-a-year crowd, but she has many friends besides Madonna.

Here are some facts: Two weeks ago Cameron Diaz wrote a whole article on how to ‘go green’ for Gwyneth’s Goop. She’s in a book club with Christy Turlington, who also wrote for Goop. Beyonce and Jay-Z are good friends of hers, she said her kids call him “Uncle J” and she was one of few guests invited to their secret wedding in NYC. She’s very close with Stella McCartney and yes Madonna, she said “I have friends like Stella McCartney or Madonna, and very often our children get together to play.” She attended Salma Hayek’s wedding this past February in Italy.

My point is Gwyneth is very popular among the rich Hollywood jet-setters. Scarlett, for all I know, doesn’t have as many friends in Hollywood. Also her friends tend to be older men, Bill Murray, Woody Allen, etc. So I think its very possible she offended Gwyneth, and that there probably was some legitimate tension. “Older actress feels put out by younger starlet” -type tension. Scarlett probably didn’t give her the time of day, and they probably don’t like each other.

  30. I think Scarlett has plenty of friends in show business, she even had the freaking David Bowie doing backing vocals in her album (they worked together in The Prestige), and she’s doing other album, now with Pete Yorn. She also has/had publicity contracts with L’Oreal, Calvin Klein, Mango, Louis Vuitton and covers like Vogue Paris, among others. I think Scarlett has equally great connections in Hollywood, even if her dad wasn’t a producer, like Gwyneth’s dad was. But although Scarlett is very confident and proud of her achievements, but she’s not a snob ass who disses the dumb $25.000-a-year crowd who probably spend their hard earned money on her movies.
Now, you mentioned something interesting…how the all patrician Paltrow gets along with former drug dealer Jay-Z? She probably would call the cops for him if he wasn’t multi-millionaire, just like Madonna, Salma Hayek (actress, producer and wife of a billionaire), Stella McCartney (daughter of a former billionaire, until Heather Mills showed up…) are. Which probably means she really won’t look in the eye of anyone out of her multi-millionaire bubble. Which means she doesn’t need my ticket or my sympathy. Many people think like that. And her career is dying because of that. Fortunately for her, she won’t starve, her money and connections are enough for this lifetime.

I remember this special about a little girl on one of the planes and it makes me vomit that she would say such a vicious thing.

So many were ROASTED ALIVE in those planes and buildings and it is utterly beyond me that someone could be so f******* filthy in their thoughts.

“point is Gwyneth is very popular among the rich Hollywood jet-setters.”

Thankfully not in the European upper class she believes she emulates and deserves to be a part of.

All of those people she is friends with are part of the most pretentious sort of people. ScarJo strikes me as someone who revels in her sex bomb status and makes no bones about it.

I just get so worked up over all those people who died and how Fishstick trivializes it in such a disgusting way.

Gwyneth mentioned how she wanted more sexual parts, but the dolt can’t seem to get it into her head that in order to have those parts, you can’t do it while spouting off about your intellect.

“Sakota, I think she never heard of Lady Di’s funeral. That was very much of a “memorial with people sobbing”. I think she skipped her history lessons before moving to Britain”

Selective memory. That was over someone who was titled and in her pretension she probably identified with her as she does with anyone upper class.

She’s looked down on Hollywood her entire snotty life and is now wondering why she isn’t getting parts and alienating everyone.

Scarlett has had a lot of diverse parts and doesn’t pretend to be intellectual and frankly is probably taken more seriously as an actress. She’s no hypocrite.

So just so everyone knows, the reason she can do nothing right in my mind is from those hideous comments. If her precious Apple had been incinerated on a plane chances are she’d be screaming her head off and sobbing like mad and camping out with her therapist.

  33. Prior to her exodus from America to Britain, Gwenneth lived the much sought after life of a bohemian New Yorker. She loved the life and made sure everyone knew that. (She never cared for L.A.) Once married to rocker Chris Martin the decision was made to raise their family in the U.K.

I believe that whether she’ll admit it or not, Gwennie misses New York terribly. Her mother lives there and most her of childhood friends. I think that deep down she’s probably jealous of the fact that Scarlett is now living the quintessential bohemian New Yorker lifestyle, the lifestyle that Gwennie once took for granted.

  38. Sakota et al, nowhere does Gwyneth say that 9/11 was nothing. And wasn’t she involved in the telethon that took place shortly after? What she has said is that she found the British reaction amazing. Amazing as in surprising and different. She doesn’t say it’s wonderful or better. Just that she was amazed by it. And you know, it is true that the British react differently to attacks of this nature, because they’ve had far more of them over the years - bombing in WW2, IRA attacks and bombs, the recent Al Qaeda attacks. And they do just move on without making a big deal of it. I’m not saying that reaction is better, it’s just different, and I can fully understand Gwyneth being amazed by it.

On the whole, English people do keep their emotions to themselves far more than Americans do and clearly that’s a way of living that Gwyneth feels more personally comfortable with. I don’t really see that as a reason to hate her and I think you’re reading stuff into her comments that she doesn’t mean.

  39. K McFarlane I agree - I think she was just appreciating the British reaction.
I also think when she’s talking about scaring people she’s talking about the governments and y’know I have to agree - Bush et al made a point of trying to provoke a climate of fear with people constantly looking over their shoulder and being suspicious but sometimes you just have to get on with life. Lots of people stopped flying after Sept 11 - what did the Brits do after 7/7 - more of them took the tube in the following days just to prove they wouldn’t be put off by terrorists.
I don’t think GP meant anything derogatory by her comments.

  40. Gwyneth’ s greatest fault is that she lacks empathy and isn’t someone most women could relate to, no matter how many GOOP clips she posts to show otherwise. She strikes me as very self absorbed, but very unaware.

She’s not the worst actress in the world. She’s not the first scion in hollywood to make her or his career due to familial connections. She’s just annoying.

  42. Fact is they both hate each otber. I think Gwyn is more jealous of Scarjo, because she’s younger and is the “it” girl. She basically brought Gwyn down to reality by just walking in the room and getting all the attention. Gwyn used to be a top dog in the business…and now has fallen and been replaced. Her “hey” day is over…and that would be tough for anyone. Any person on this earth would become defensive and jealous of their replacement. She’s only human. I know I would be. It’s completely understandable. I also think both she and Scarjo are horrible actresses and Scarjo has the face of a pig. She absolutely and completely cannot act and is extremely overrated. Gwyn is a one trick pony too. Scarjo has a horrible figure…Gwyn is a gawky bean pole. I will say…the only movies I liked Gwyn in was Emma and Sliding Doors. I’ve never liked a Scarjo movie, except Nanny Diaries was kinda cute. Other than that…I don’t care for either of them.
