Every presidential election year, there are celebrities announcing that they’ll “leave America” if so-and-so gets elected. There were a lot of those threats during the 2000 and 2004 election and I don’t think anyone left? But the tenor definitely changed in 2016, as Americans en masse were suddenly super-curious about immigrating to Canada, Mexico or various European countries. My first choice is still Argentina for various reasons! But realistically, I think I could apply for citizenship in India, for sure. A back-up plan, at least. For Tommy Lee, his plan to leave Trump’s America sounds… actually pretty solid??
Rocker Tommy Lee is vowing to leave the United States if President Trump wins reelection.
“Dude, I swear to God if that happens then I’m coming over to visit the U.K.,” Lee said in an interview published this week in The Big Issue. “I’m out of here. I’ll go back to my motherland, go back to Greece and get a house on one of the islands,” Lee, who was born in Athens and raised in California, added.
The 58-year-old Mötley Crüe drummer told the magazine that having the former “Celebrity Apprentice” star as commander in chief makes the U.S. “embarrassing” for the rest of the world.
“I feel like people in Europe and the rest of the world look at America and think: ‘What the f— are you guys doing over there?’ ” Lee said. “Stop voting for celebrities and get someone real to run the country.”
I completely understand the “F–k you, I’m going to stay and fight for the soul of my country.” But I also understand, especially in the Trump era, how people are like “f–k this, I’m out.” If Trump “wins” again, all bets are off. I don’t even want to contemplate it, honestly. I don’t even want to come up with a plan. Living on a Greek island with Tommy Lee actually sounds amazing. Tommy actually sounds like a cool and interesting guy a lot of the time – he’s been anti-Trump from the beginning and he’s got a lot of interesting stuff to say about his sobriety.

I’m going to move to the Exuma Cays pretty much permanently. I already have permanent residency in the Bahamas. We were retiring there anyway in a few years. I can practice medicine there, my husband mostly works remotely anyway. If the idiot stelas this election, too, I’m going to need the sand, crystal Exuma blue water, and palm trees to keep me sane.

That’s amazing! My father is from Jamaica and I’m consistently vacillating about getting citizenship there or from Britain (he was born before independence) and getting out of dodge.

Greece is beautiful and the food is great but has its share of problems.
On my dad’s side, they were recent enough immigrants that I was able to visit cousins in Sweden. I speak some Swedish. I loved it there. I’ll stay and fight if Trump prevails, tho.

Every country has their share of problems. I don’t think he’s saying Greece doesn’t. But his roots are Greek and he has the money, so why not. I agree with him!!!
And Greece is beautiful with every island being slightly different. I wish I had the money and time to travel them all.
I wish us Canadians could “adopt” a few good Americans each who want to move north.
had a discussion with my boss, whose family lives in Canada. I could relo and still do my job but as a Jew, if Trump steals the election, I don’t think I’ll be safe anywhere in the long run. That said, I wouldn’t put it past the Trump Regime (w/Putin’s support) to eventually invade Canada & the US to provide full throttle support for Russia which is a green light for aggression and global domination (at least until global warming decimates the planet)
You do realise that we Canadians would not be alone against a Trumpian dystopian attempt on our borders? We are still a part of NATO and would have literally all of our global allies protecting us against the US. There is still decency and allyship in the rest of the world.

Seriously considering it even if Biden wins because then I will be too far for any of my maga family to ever want to visit. Plus I just like it.

We moved to New Zealand after Bush’s second win. It wasn’t all it’s advertised to be. We returned after Obama’s win. Like Tom, we will stay and fight.
I’d like more details (good and bad) as this is a possibility for us. We both work remotely and just need internet.
New Zealand is actually quite expensive. Living on a fairly isolated island can also take a mental health toll (see the meth problems in Hawaii)
Yes – I’ve lived in small towns. The smallest 300 people. Isolation can destroy you.
Even though Greece suffers from its own Trump at the moment, our country is beautiful! I can well understand that he may want to settle on one of the Aegean islands, and wake up and go to sleep watching the blue of the sea and the sky. Eating all that amazing food, fresh seafood and fish, vegetables and fruit straight from the source, I mean who could blame him? Gosh, I miss it sooo much….

I remember seeing him interviewed years ago and he claimed that he and the rest of his family never understood his Greek mother because she hardly spoke English. (His mother was a beauty queen in Greece and his dad was in the military.) At the time I was thinking, “So he didn’t learn *any* Greek from his mother???” I don’t know if he was being serious or not.
How did he communicate with his own mother then? If she spoke Greek and barely spoke English and he spoke English and didn’t know Greek. Wow what a lost opportunity there. But it’s odd though…if he grew up around a Greek speaking mother and his father was away in the military, how on earth did he not learn Greek just from being around his mother the most.

I have Plan B if 45 wins again. I’m currently interviewing for jobs in Thailand. They have low Covid rates and good health care. If I can find someone to watch my dogs while I’m gone, I’m out of here until Der Fuhrer is gone.
@H That’s a great plan. I’ve been to Thailand a few times and really loved it. My SO’s younger sister is a recent college grad who has lost her job and had to move back home with her parents due to COVID. I suggested taking time to live and work abroad since she doesn’t have anything holding her back. She’s applied to teach English in Thailand and is working through the process. I’m hoping she gets picked and we can go visit her while she’s there!
My landlord went to Greece “for the summer” (he has a Greek passport) and he still hasn’t come back so something must be working over there! I have daydreamed about defecting to Belize if Trump stays in office, but I don’t even have a passport so it’s all wishful thinking.

I was talking about this with my cousin back in July. She’s adamant that if trump wins she’s moving to Thailand since they’re handling COVID so much better and she has Thai citizenship. She’s a VP at a media company, and they’re thinking of doing remote work permanently.
My other cousin just moved to France in the beginning of the year to be with her French family.
I never thought about moving because of the president. Thought of living abroad just for fun. But lately I’ve been toying with the idea. Thanks to my parents I have Thai and British citizenship, so I can always go there.
Argentinian here. Living in Europe for the past 25 years (first in Austria then the UK). Argentina is, if you excuse me, a dump. Corrupt, devoid of hope, with a large amount of the population living in REAL, not relative poverty. Where a respected trait is being able to pull one over someone (the affectionate expression for that is “viveza criolla”) . It’s a good country if you are an entrepreneur who is able to “bend the rules” to your advantage. For the rest of us taxpayers, you just get taken advantage of. Where corruption in the government is so common it is accepted as a reality. And the division between right and left is so deep, it’s referred to as “the crevasse”. The hatred between Republicans and Democrats has nothing on Argentinian politics, my friends’ Facebook pages are full of hatred on both sides. And let’s not start me on how backwards they still are! Abortion is illegal, women are called “girls”, and it’s legal to post a job add requesting, say, a marketing manager “under the age of 35”. I wouldn’t go back in a million years.
