Duchess Kate was out in London with George & Charlotte, shopping on a budget

The Cambridge kids’ Easter holiday is finally over, I think, which means that the Cambridges went from Norfolk to Windsor to London in the past week. From what I could tell, William and Kate didn’t travel to Windsor from Norfolk until last Friday or maybe even Saturday morning for the funeral. It also sounds like Will and Kate did not stick around Windsor for very long, and they were immediately back in London with the kids. On Monday, Kate was seen out with the kids for a timely appearance:

Kate Middleton is teaching her kids about budgeting! On the last day of Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s Easter break on Monday, Kate brought her to eldest children to a London store for some shopping, according to shop owner Alexa on Twitter.

“I’ve always been a Kate Middleton fan… today she was in one of my stores on the Kings Road with George and Charlotte, what the team told me about how she was with them and how the kids were with each other makes me like her even more!” Alexa wrote.

She added in replies to the original tweet that workers said George, 7, and Charlotte, 5, “had a budget that they stuck to and paid for their own things with their own money.”

“Just normal well brought up children and a normal parent trying to do the right thing and that’s just lovely!” Alexa said.

[From People]

My parents did that with me, trying to teach me the value of money, how much things cost and how to set a small budget. Most parents do that. It’s what Prince Charles should try to do with Kate, honestly. “Here’s a clothing allowance, you have to stick to it and you don’t need any more button-slathered blue coatdresses or keen Sgt. Pepper military-inspired looks.”

I wonder what Louis was doing? Just hanging out, bashing into candy displays? Speaking of, Louis’s third birthday is coming up on Friday, so I imagine we’ll get some new photos of the baby who looks the most like Kate. Kate and William are definitely going to be leaning into showing off their kids constantly now. Especially when Meghan has her baby girl. I imagine the keen clownshow will be super-extra the week Meghan gives birth Lil’ Montecito.

  1. Woke says:

I don’t believe this story at all. It sound like a planted story. Because there are similar story of Diana with William and Harry

    • BothSidesNow says:

Yes, and notice how I thought London was still shut down, but she took the kids shopping all while they aren’t wearing masks? And isn’t it still only to go out for basics, like food or medicine? That doesn’t look like food to me!!
Keen Doucheness being the biggest Karen of all!!

      • bub244 says:

I think I’ve become the self-appointed expert on UK COVID guidelines, lol. But no, as of now in the UK all shops are open again but you have to wear masks indoors. During lockdown it was only ‘essential’ shops (basically just food shops) that were open, but that has relaxed now.

      • Waitwhat says:

In Scotland non-essential shops don’t open again until the 26th, but the devolved nations all have slightly different rules from England and I’ve given up trying to remember them all!

    • Madelaine says:

And ALEXA sounds so freaking planted. Of all the names in the calendar. These PR really think of us as low wits.

    • PEARL GREY says:

Most if not all of these stories are staged and planted. They all follow the same pattern, with the same vagueness and are always released in a timed fashion. It’s usually just Kate, alone (no mention of Nanny Maria), with the children doing some oh-so nOrMaL activity that shows just what a down-to-earth, ordinary-yet-super mom she is and how well behaved her children are because of her parenting. A few months ago we got a Normal Bill and Cathy low-key pub date night story and last year it was Bill and Cathy’s Excellent Adventure on a budget-friendly pandemic staycation, but usually the stories just centre around Kate alone with the kids. Mama Middleton PR is hard at work.

    • Beach Dreams says:

Yeah, I’ll take “things that didn’t actually happen” for $500 on this one.

  2. Midge says:

Louis is a Michael Middleton clone.

  3. Lauren says:

It’s a lovely story. I’ll leave it at that.

  4. Lemons says:

I imagine Charles throwing an absolute tantrum after reading this because his son and wife can’t budget to save their lives (and with his money)!

    • goofpuff says:

I was wondering how she would teach them about their budget when she hardly seems to have any idea of what that means. And I wonder how HUGE that budget is. Give me a break. This story is such obvious PR.

  5. My3cents says:

She would really benefit from wearing a mask regularly, those manic grins are not doing her any favors.

  6. Jen says:

And you know the pictures will be taken by Kate.

  7. L84Tea says:

I hadn’t even thought about that, but yes, they are going to be laying it on thick in the coming weeks. I’m anticipating Charlotte on a tightrope, George taming lions, Louis making balloon animals, William juggling (not mistresses, but balls), and Keeny as the ringmaster, buttony coat, boots and all. All metaphorically speaking of course. But you know it’s going to be a circus.

    • BothSidesNow says:

But Baldimort only has little balls though so it will be a short show!

      • Kaye says:

Give the bald jokes a rest; do you ridicule short guys too? Or people who may have a limp?

They were probably shopping for incoming family birthdays.

      • L84Tea says:

We all crack on William here because he deserves it. Plain and simple.

      • Ang says:

Omg I had a dream lastnight where I called William Baldimort to his face by accident and was mortified, as were the few other people standing around. This site, man 😆

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

Kaye, I can’t think why we need to give it a rest. After all, Willileaks is the “Sexiest Bald Man”, right? So, I think he WANTS us to mention his baldness in whatever we choose.

  8. Merricat says:

Kate Middleton has devoted most of her life trying to escape her “normal” middle class roots. I sincerely doubt that those children are being taught to embrace this humble background.

    • Seraphina says:

Correct, who ever planted this story is trying to appeal to the masses, you know those normal middle class roots she and her mother so desperately wanted to escape. They are saying: Look at us, we are so normal just like you! As they are driven back to their palaces. My granny never had an ATM in her home. At least, from what I read, Diana acknowledged the privilege.

    • olliesmom says:

That is what I was thinking. These children are going to have other human beings at their beck and call for the rest of their lives and they know it already at their young ages.

  9. Nic919 says:

Is bringing your young kids out shopping in a pandemic the smart thing to do? They won’t be masked and outside of medical issues, no one Kate’s age is vaccinated yet. And pretending they are normal is a joke. None of them live on a realistic budget and Kate is the last one to be able to show them that.

    • My3cents says:

There’s nothing normal about this, they probably cleared or closed the shop just for them (and their normal security personnel).

  10. Jais says:

I’m kind of confused why they don’t actually say which store? Is it against protocol to name the store?

  11. mimi says:

Phillip has just been buried and they’re supposed to be in mourning. Yes, I understand that doesn’t mean Kate can’t go to shopping with her kids but having to leak it to showcase her amazing and expectational mothering skills and William tweeting about the Super League to me is just…..tacky. The Queen, Anne, Harry and the others are at their homes grieving and reflecting but these two, especially her, have been so thirsty for attention….

    • Lemons says:

This is what I don’t get…The family is in mourning. That means we shouldn’t be hearing syrupy sweet updates about normal Cathy and her kids.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

Kate is literally only known for being an avid shopper and birthing three heirs. That’s it.

Also, I doubt she can mourn appropriately for a man she barely knew and who likely never much cared for her laziness either.

    • Waitwhat says:

      It’s literally the Queen’s 95th birthday today!

Plus it’s the Cambridges’ tenth wedding anniversary the day after tomorrow; they’re not really able to capitalise on that as I’m sure they’d planned, either.

  12. Becks1 says:

Oh this is such a planted story.

“Just normal well brought up children and a normal parent trying to do the right thing and that’s just lovely!

I feel like she could have said “normal” one more time in there to really drive the point home about how “normal” the Cambridges are.

  13. caitlinsmom says:

let’s praise the hell out of the most privileged white woman for doing the very bare minimum with two of her children. OK.

    • Ann says:

“The fact that she had her children with her just makes me love her even more.” Um…..what? It sounds like they were shopping FOR the kids, so it would make sense to have them there? When my kid were in school I did sometimes shop without them, because I knew what they needed/liked etc., but still. Amazing that this woman gets props for just being with her kids on a normal errand.

      Rich people are weird.

  14. The Duchess says:

Kate, if you’re reading this; you are pathetic!

  15. Dee says:

The syrupy stories coming out of the rota about Kate are so obvious. Someone needs some propping up, stat.

  16. Harper says:

Well, what was the budget? !00 pounds in a toy shop? This is more Diana, Princess of Wales copycatting.

  17. Michelle Connolly says:

There is no such thing as a budget in Knightsbridge, it’s literally the most expensive shopping area in London. Laughable.

    • Sofia says:

I’ve been to Knightsbridge like twice because it’s out of my budget to shop regularly so I’m not very familiar with the area. But yeah the shops I saw (beyond Harrods/Harvey Nichols) didn’t scream budget to me. There might be some so who knows?

Maybe their budgeting is something like “Buy this £300 coat instead of this £450 coat”

    • Deering24 says:

_Thank_ you for that information—I figured as much. Rich people’s budgets are hardly “How many Target/Tesco outfits can we buy under $50 for two kids?” action. 🤮🤮

  18. Sofia says:

    It’s a cute story I guess. That’s all I got.

  19. Maevo says:

Louis was probably home with the nanny.

  20. Tbonesmum says:

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=rfrlYPLS3ec&feature=share

The shop was reported as being Smiggle in one of the articles.

I have a 9 year old daughter who loved this shop. I can totally relate to the Australian comedian talking about it in the link. It is a wee bit rude but very relatable .

    • Gendaphool says:

Smiggle seems to be all the rage in London primary schools right now. My 7 year old made me take him to a Smiggle shop last week for back to school supplies declaring how everyone in his Year has Smiggle back packs and lunch boxes. They have cute stuff.

      • Tbonesmum says:

It is all the rage in Australian Schools as well. My daughter loves it.

      • Ann says:

It has yet to make it to the States as far as I know? Maybe it’s in New York but I don’t think it’s where I live. But my kids would be too old for it.

    • Sofia says:

The shop being Smiggle makes sense. Kids love it and as someone said above, Knightsbridge really isn’t for “budget” shopping but it would make sense in Smiggle

    • betsyh says:

Hahaha! thanks for posting that video! I empathize with Flanagan’s view of shopping.

  21. Likeyoucare says:

That was really irresponsible of her.
She should be sitting next to the queen to learn the rope on how to be the head of country during working day too.
Someone should brief her the list on how to be the future future queen.
Notice how i didnt say consort there.

    • MerlinsMom1018 says:

      @Likeyoucare
Nonsense. Kate needs no lessons on how to be FFQ don’t you know? She was born to do this, according to her mom so why should she be taking lessons????
      🙄
The British people are sooooo lucky to have her
      (This family, I swear)

      • Likeyoucare says:

        MERLINSMOM1018 True true
Forgive me for my silly mistake.
Kate is born to be queen, she need to give betty a few advices on how to conduct herself during her husband funeral.

      • MerlinsMom1018 says:

        @Likeyoucare
Poor Betty. On the throne for what???? Coming up on 70 years or so and silly lamb, been doing it ALL wrong. Thank the gods Keen Kate to the rescue!!!!
Yes, Betty did wipe a tear or two away at the funeral but not the FFQ. So you’re right keen needs to give Betty a brief lesson on the stiff upper lip

  22. Amy Bee says:

Ok. She did what normal people do. I’m not sure she should get praised for that. Alexa wasn’t even at the store when Kate came by. Just an odd story. As for Louis he was probably home with Maria.

  23. Susan says:

I wonder if it annoys her that people still call her Kate Middleton? I felt like William was really behind trying to make Catherine happen and it just hasn’t…stuck.

    • Robin says:

I keep saying “Catherine” is not going to happen, in so many ways more than one. It’s a royal contrivance. “Kate” has always been her name. No one would have called her Catherine growing up; it’s too long and can come over as naff rather than refined, in that it lends itself to Cathy (sorry to anyone out there called Cathy – it’s just a silly class thing). I even wonder whether she was birth cert’d with it. I’m not sure. It depends on whether Carole Machiavelli Middleton thought it was more appropriate long term but something to be avoided in the short term. Kate/Katy/Katie is everywhere amongst her age and class. It suits her down to the ground, as does her surname. Middle middle class, middle of the road, middle in everything she does, including sitting on the middle of the fence.

      • Ann says:

It’s interesting you say that because I used to read Catherine Cookson books and their ilk sometimes, and she had a few characters named Cathy. Working-class or lower-middle-class characters, not Posh, and it definitely seemed like it was a class thing? I didn’t understand the English class system all that well but I guess I learned a little bit about it from those books and others and the was the sense I got.

Cathy was a popular name for girls in the United States for decades, but starting in the 80s/90s it switched to Kate or Katie, which were the rage for a while. Now it’s still there because it’s classic but less prevalent. I have a niece Katherine but she’s always been called Katherine….my sister didn’t want her or any of her kids to have nicknames or shortened names. I’m not sure why.

    • Nic919 says:

She was known in the media as Kate pre engagement and its going to stick. She also seemed to refer to herself as that until William decided it should be Catherine. Her brand was set and it won’t be changed.

      • Becks1 says:

Meghan referred to her as Kate in the interview without missing a beat, now of course that was for an American audience that knows her as Kate Middleton, but I would think if she went by Catherine full time in real life then Meghan would have said Catherine at some point and she never did.

It’s hard to switch your name, I’m Becky but my full name is Rebecca and I have always tried to switch to rebecca because I never liked Becky (and now Becky is such a joke, lol) but it never works because….I don’t respond to Rebecca. someone calls me Rebecca and I assume it’s someone else.

So that didn’t work out very well ha.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

I tend to think it came from Kate and/or Ma – to make her sound more regal esp as there has been several Queen Consorts called Catherine. We know at least one lost her head!!

  24. swirlmamad says:

They probably got this quote from an AMAZON ALEXA…what an uninspired, fluffy nothingburger of an “article.”

    • Victoria says:

      Hah! @swirlmamad

It’s the “I have always been a Kate Middleton fan…” that kills me.

      They are such lames.

    • Victoria says:

      Hah! @swirlmamad

It’s the “I have always been a Kate Middleton fan…” that kills me.

      They are such lames.

  25. WithTheAmerican says:

Guys. This was her work for the week. Get it? KEEN CATHY OUT.

  26. Topaz says:

I am starting to read to much into these planted storeis, because they are so bad PR. The Queen is mourning, it is her birthday and the Middleton PR planted this story. Are they trying to get ahead of a story before Harry is back in the US and talking to Gayle. Did something go haywire at the funeral between the 3 of them? Is William using his brother and the rift to dumb Kate?

  27. Andrew’s Nemesis says:

‘Hello Alexa: give me a diabetic sugar-coma story on Normal-Kate being Normal with Normal-Kids, please’.
    So PHONY.

  28. Digital Unicorn says:

This is such a PR stunt and planted story – is the name of the story mentioned as I don’t see it? I guess its only the Keens who should get the PR but not the store.

We are going to be seeing a lot more of stories like this – not only to feed the beast but to compete with the family the LA. Kings Road CANNOT compete with Rodeo Drive!!!!!

    • MerlinsMom1018 says:

      @DU
      I’ve been to Rodeo Drive.
The only thing I could afford there was to walk down it. WOW

  29. Coco says:

    Obvious PR story is obvious.

  30. Lizzie says:

Maybe this could be the next thing she is keen about, something every parent has always done.
    What a dud.

  31. Waitwhat says:

This is horribly cynical, but … before Philip died, there was discussion about how the Cambridges’ tenth wedding anniversary was coming up and that there would be a publicity push around it and their celebrations (perhaps to try to recapture some of the glamour and good feelings towards them that existed at the time). I just checked, and their actual anniversary is the day after tomorrow – but anything relating to celebrations would be considered in poor taste at the moment (I mean, it’s the Queen’s 95th birthday today, and that’s also gone largely unremarked) so they’ve lost that avenue. Maybe that’s partly why this story has appeared now.

    • Kaye says:

They were probably shopping for Louis’ birthday the 23rd ~ it’s likely homemade crafty items for the Queen’s bd today. Their anniversary is the 29th so wait for all the good press then.

      • Tessa says:

Maybe a picture of Kate in an apron with Charlotte and George helping her create a birthday cake to surprise Louis.

  32. Dimsum Mum says:

So it’s fine for Kate to shop, but if it was MM can you imagine the snide comments?

“While the rest of the BRF mourns, MM spent the afternoon shopping.”

    • Gendaphool says:

As said up thread, it appears that they were shopping for school supplies. Not tiaras & ball gowns during a time of mourning. A totally normal activity for parents during term break and something Meghan will be doing too in a couple of years when Archie starts school.

  33. Case says:

One part of this story said the shop people thought Kate was asking them what they wanted to be for Halloween and were picking up costume pieces. Who the heck shops for Halloween in APRIL????

  34. AnneSurely says:

In a pandemic. I can’t with this airhead and her incompetent PR.

  35. Commonwealthy says:

KAISER, this sleight of hand shade was brilliantly done, you had me in the first half as the kids would say: “My parents did that with me, trying to teach me the value of money, how much things cost and how to set a small budget. Most parents do that. It’s what Prince Charles should try to do with Kate, honestly. “Here’s a clothing allowance, you have to stick to it and you don’t need any more button-slathered blue coatdresses or keen Sgt. Pepper military-inspired looks.”

  36. Lyra says:

Its tone deaf Kate going shopping few days after Philip died. Not that her life should stop because her in law died but idk it feels off specially after all the glam shots she did trying to make the funeral about herself. What’s going on?

  37. Sue says:

Sounds like George and Charlotte were out buying birthday presents for their little brother. Louis is so, so cute.
    That’s all I got.

  38. Reece says:

Anyone else’s brain start reading this in Alexa’s voice after seeing the owner’s name?

  39. jferber says:

Bloody hell. I don’t believe a word of it. Mary McCarthy famously wrote (unfairly, I think) that every word out of Lillian Hellman’s mouth was a lie, including the “ands” and “buts.” Same goes for Kate, Carole and their chroniclers. And it is eminently fair to write that about them.

  40. Phoenix says:

Oh, c’mon, even Alexa doesn’t believe in her words lol
“I’ve always been Kate’s fan blah blah blah, now I like her even more” lol Jeez, it’s so obvious!

  41. A says:

“Just normal well brought up children and a normal parent trying to do the right thing and that’s just lovely!” Mmmmmmmmm, this just screams Carole Middleton PR Firm to me, but whatever, “Alexa.”

  42. February-Pisces says:

Meghan was already an activist for women’s rights at the age of 11 and was a UN ambassador.
Diana campaigned against land mines and changed the stigma around HIV and AIDS.
Harry founded the invictus Games and served in the army for 10 years.
Prince Phillip founded the Duke of Edinburgh Award
Prince Charles has the Princes Trust
Queen is the longest reigning monarch
    Kate Middleton………went shopping.

  43. Monica says:

« Most parents do that. It’s what Prince Charles should try to do with Kate, honestly. »

    ::snort::

Kate has completed her chores for the week and it’s only Wednesday!

  44. Lizzie says:

We know it’s not true, Kate has a pap on call to take her pic, and photoshop it, when she leaves home. If he was taking her pic at a dead girls memorial then he would have taken it shopping. The whole story is just a big whopping lie.

  45. Isabella says:

That top photo is just weird. She’s kneeling down as if to help her distressed kids, but she’s not trying to comfort them. Instead, she’s turned directly into the camera, grinning.

  46. Tessa says:

Kate and William are getting cover stories for Louis’ birthday. He will be trotted out soon.
