Glenn Close received her eighth Oscar nomination this year for her role in Hillbilly Elegy. Glenn did not take home a statue, tying her with Peter O’Toole for the most nominated actors without a win. Glenn, who delighted us with a performance of the dance “Da Butt” during the show, remains unbothered. In an interview with The Associated Press, Glenn was asked how she felt about not winning an Oscar yet. Glenn said that she doesn’t feel like a loser and that “winning” or “losing” is not what it’s about. She stated that the press likes to create winner and loser narratives which is unnecessary. In her eyes, being nominated already makes her a winner. Here’s more of what Glenn had to say, via People:
“First of all, I don’t think I’m a loser,” she told the AP.
“Who in that category is a loser? You’re there, you’re five people honored for the work that you’ve done by your peers. What’s better than that?” the Hillbilly Elegy star said. “And I honestly feel that the press likes to have winners and losers. And then they say, ‘Who is the worst dressed?’ And, you know, ‘Who made the worst speech?’ Forget it. It’s not what it’s about.”
“I say, f— them!” Close concluded.
In addition to Hillbilly Elegy, which earned her a nomination, the star was previously recognized for her roles in Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs and The Wife, as well as The World According to Garp, The Big Chill and The Natural.
Ahead of the Oscars last month, E!’s Giuliana Rancic asked Close whether she had thought about where she’d put her award if she nabbed the Actress in a Supporting Role award.
“I actually haven’t, but I have this fantasy — and I think I [would] actually do it — that I might take it to the local library for people to look at; I might take it to the coffee shop I go to a lot,” said Close.
“So that people can actually see what it’s like. [To] kind of bring this world into everyday life. That’s what I will do,” she continued.
I feel Glenn is consistently robbed by the Academy. The woman’s career is incredible and up there with Meryl Streep. I was obsessed with Glenn in Damages and I enjoyed her in almost everything except for Hillbilly Elegy. I tried watching that movie and Glenn did well with the material but I just couldn’t get into it. However, her performance in Fatal Attraction should have definitely won her an Oscar. (Female villains and anti-heroes rarely win though.)
I love Glenn’s fantasy to show off her Oscar to people at the library or coffee shop. I also like how Glenn said that it was good for her to be around her “people,” other performers, for the first time in over a year because of COVID. I am sure many actors and musicians struggled not being able to be with other creatives. Glenn is right that the media likes to create winners and losers but doesn’t recognize that being nominated already makes someone a winner. With that being said, it is far time that Glenn wins an Oscar. And until the day the Academy recognizes Glenn’s brilliance, as Glenn would say, f*** them.

I remember seeing Dangerous Liaisons in the theatre. She was perfect.
Absolutely.

Dangerous Liaisons is a masterpiece, all 3 of them were award worthy- and Ms. Close was PERFECTION!
Of course she lost to Jodie Foster in the Accused, other nominees: Melanie Griffith, Meryl Streep, Sigourney Weaver.
Stacked.
But she should have won.
I can’t believe Goop has an Oscar and Glenn Close has not.
I bet nepotism helps.
And lots of cash.

Glenn is a wonderful actress. I have no idea why she hasn’t won yet, but nobody can question her talent. It’s better to be known for talent than how many awards you have won. Most people understand that the Oscar voting process is completely subjective and some members vote without even seeing all of the performances nominated.
My theory it’s because probably she doesn’t play the pr game too much, or she must have pissed someone.
The fact that Shakespeare in Love, Silver Linings, and La La Land won their actresses awards is beyond me ($$$$). I like Glenn but Youn Yuh-Jung was the deserving winner this year, but I hope she’s recognised by the academy in the future.
I still despise Oscar thirstiness.

Winning any award is an combination of talent, timing, and luck. Glenn Close definitely has the talent!
And she shouldn’t have to be telling a reporter ‘I don’t think I’m a loser.’ WTH kind of question to ask is that?
I think Glenn is a better actor than Streep actually. But I find Streep overrated.
Agree with the Streep is overrated opinion.
ITA on both counts Darla. I think Streep is great, but the way she has come to overshadow the other actors in her generation as being the “greatest” makes no sense to me, because I don’t see it at all. Not when you have Glenn, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, Sigourney Weaver, Sally Field, Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard, etc. all in that group.
She should have won for Fatal Attraction. Of course everybody loves Cher, but there is no way she was better in Moonstruck than Close.
Glenn’s performance in Fatal Attraction scared the p*ss out of men who like to run around on their wives — who probably constitute the majority of the men in power in Hollywood. It hit a little too close to home for them.
The Best Actress awards are biased towards young, attractive women, even when they’re clearly not the best in their category. Just thinking off the top of my head Goop, Emma Stone, Natalie Portman, Jennifer Lawrence are all recent examples of this. So I’m not surprised Glen Close hasn’t won.
I would add Alicia Vikander to that list, although I think her win was for best Supporting actress.
Which is another category full of stupid wins.
The fact that Glen Close hasn’t won an Oscar is absolutely irrelevant. Does it change the way we think about her? Nope.
I’ve been watching her, god… since, ‘The Big Chill?’ ‘The World According to Garp?’ She deserves a damn trophy. She’s an excellent actress whether those baffoons say so or don’t.
In order to see herself as a loser for not winning, she’d have to see all the people who’ve won as “winners.” Goop has won for a dreadful performance. Jennifer Lawrence has won (twice!) and, honestly, she really shouldn’t have. Plenty of people have won who won by politics, not performance, and Glenn certainly knows that. She’s not gonna lose roles over a lack of a statue.
But, dangit, she oughta have one!!

She was flat-out brilliant in Dangerous Liaisons.
Man, she’s the best. Agreed, she should have won a LONG time ago, but she was just a little bit TOO real, probably, in “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Fatal Attraction” and “The Wife” for the straight hetero white men who decide everything in Hollywood.
Her plan to take the Oscar on tour, when she finally wins, reminds me of what Kathy Griffin did when she won her Emmys; she took them everywhere and let people play with them, take pictures, etc.
