Only Murders in the Building’s second teaser shows a secret passageway

Spoilers for season one of Only Murders in the Building
Building up our anticipation, Hulu has released a second teaser for the second season of Only Murders in the Building. We left the first season with our unlikely trio of podcast detectives being led from the Arconia in handcuffs under suspicion of killing their co-op prez. This teaser shows some of their interrogation and their efforts to clear their names, as well as some quick glimpses of last season’s culprit and the new characters. It doesn’t give much of the plot away, but it does make me wish it was June 28th already.

Not even prison time can keep a former Arconia resident away.

Hulu on Tuesday released a new teaser for Only Murders in the Building Season 2 (premiering Tuesday, June 28), which features the somewhat surprising return of Tim Kono’s killer Jan. Amy Ryan’s character appears to be behind plexiglass, picking up the phone to speak to whoever’s on the other side.

Additional Season 2 guest stars spotlighted in the above preview include Michael Rapaport (as Detective Kreps), Nathan Lane (reprising his Season 1 role as Teddy Dimas), Amy Schumer (who is subletting Sting’s apartment) and Academy Award winner Shirley MacLaine (who plays Bunny’s mom). New series regular Cara Delevingne (as gallery owner/Mabel’s love interest Alice) is also seen briefly.

As you’ll recall, the Season 1 finale established a second whodunnit that took OMITB in a whole new direction. In the closing minutes of the episode, Charles and Oliver ran into Mabel’s apartment to find her covered in blood and standing over Bunny’s lifeless body. Moments later, a SWAT team rolled in and took all three of them into custody.

Season 2 follows the amateur sleuths on a race to unmask Bunny’s killer, during which a number of unfortunate complications arise: Not only have they been publicly implicated, but “they are now the subjects of a competing podcast” and “have to deal with a bunch of New York neighbors who all think they committed murder,” according to the official logline. The teaser also gives away that someone is planting additional evidence to make it look like they’re guilty — and a secret tunnel may be key to clearing their names.

So this season picks up right where the first one left off, which makes sense for the storyline and also because fall is the best season in NYC. It looks like the dynamic between the central trio has remained unchanged. There’s even a callback to Mabel and Oliver’s different delivery of the same line from the fandom episode. And I love the shots of them and Charles matching in some very plush looking fur coats for a reason that has yet to be explained. I predict that the visit to Jan in jail is to probe the mind of a known murderer in an attempt to solve Bunny’s murder. Speaking of Jan, the way Oliver felt about her coming in is the way I feel about the new characters, like Cara Delevingne as Mabel’s love interest. I loved Tie-Dye Guy and don’t want anything to disrupt the core three! I guess that Cara’s character is NOT the killer because I don’t think she could pull off the acting and having a love interest be the killer two seasons in a row would be too obvious. Also, I think Tie-Dye Guy’s exit will relate to the fact that he spent 10 years in jail for a murder he didn’t commit. He needs to move forward instead of getting caught up in another investigation.

The thing that I loved most about the first season of the show was how real the supporting characters felt. They were all individuals and they were so quintessential New York. And despite a few recognizable names/faces, they were largely character actors. The additions this season are bigger names and I don’t know that all of them are good enough actors to make us forget that. Like, Amy Schumer is always Amy Schumer (and might literally be playing herself). Cara will definitely be playing herself and I find her absolutely insufferable (her head looks like a bare skull with eyebrows; but I do want to try her Prosecco, I bet it’s good). However, the creative team put together such a great first season that I am trying to reserve judgement and trust that there was a reason for this casting. And the reveal of a secret passage in someone’s Arconia apartment bathroom is very Hardy Boys and may shed light on some of the loose ends from the first season, including how the killer got away and called the cops before Mabel even discovered the body.

I CANNOT wait. And oh my God, the picture of her in the red dress? She’s the most beautiful woman in the world. And then the mug shot with the bloody shirt? She’s the most unfairly accused woman in the world. Let the games begin!

This show is so very smart, and I love that Selena G. wasn’t made the love interest of one of the delightful but mature male stars

  3. Southern Fried says:

Fun show and the timing is right for a second season, not too long in between. Clever casting to start but feel a little concerned about cast for now. Cara doesn’t bother me as much as Amy Schumer, ugh. Selena is such a lovely young woman and a pleasure seeing her grow and succeed. My daughters and I seek out her fashion shoots.

  4. Lucía says:

Out of all of the great young actresses they could have picked to play Selena’s love interest, they had to go with Cara. Why do they do this to themselves? Hopefully all the good things about the show will upstage her.

I am excited for this. I’m hoping that just like the previous season, the guest stars did t really have too big a role. Although they did waste a bit too much precious screen time on Sting.

To me, the relationships between the three main characters are the most interesting and fun. Their timing is fantastic!

Favorite show ever! I can’t wait. Love the chemistry between the main characters. I hope they bring back Jane Lynch and Harold the cat dad. Love seeing Selena on screen. She is so stunning. The camera loves her – she reminds me a bit of a young Sophia Loren.
