Miley Cyrus changes lyrics of song to include ‘you’re gay’

Miley Cyrus changed the lyrics to her popular song “7 Things” while performing in Lexington, Kentucky at the beginning of the month. Instead of singing “you’re vain, your games, you’re insecure,” she very clearly said “you’re vain, you’re gay, you’re insecure.” (Video above.)

This week’s Star Magazine featured a photo of Miley using a teleprompter at that very concert in Lexington. The teleprompter reportedly included the lyrics to her songs and a reminder of the city she was in, so it’s not like she has a decent excuse for substituting lyrics. (Bruce Springsteen could use one of those.) Plus, that’s a hit song. She most likely knows the words and deliberately changed them.

This isn’t the first time Miley has made an arguably non-deliberate offensive gaffe. Miley was photographed making the “slant eyes” gesture with a bunch of friends earlier this year. The gesture is incredibly offensive to Asian people, and Miley initially blew off the backlash over the photo, writing that she was being targeted and that people were making a bigger deal out of it than it warranted. “Well, I’m sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context! In NO way was I making fun of any ethnicity! I definitely feel like the press is trying to make me out as the new ‘BAD GIRL!’” She eventually issued a sincere and contrite-sounding apology about a week later when she either realized the error of her ways or succumbed to pressure to sound sorry.

What is Miley going to say if this blows up into a bigger scandal? I know kids think it’s ok to use “gay” as an insult, but it’s not and there’s a movement to get them to stop. My just-turned five year-old son recently asked me why his friends were calling him “gay” and what that meant. Somehow this upset me more than any swear word could. I told him that they shouldn’t say that because “gay” isn’t a bad word. I explained that his aunt is gay and it just means that a woman is with another woman or a man is with another man. I told him that it hurts peoples’ feeling who are gay when other people say it as if it’s a bad word.

Miley is a role model to so many kids and she should have more sense than to change her lyrics to make “gay” sound like an insult. It’s bad enough that she’s performing in shorts that are so tight and short that it looks like she has a perma-wedgie. The girl is 16 years old. She should cover her ass in more ways than one.

Oh man, I hadn’t even thought of what I’m going to say if my one and a half year old son or daughter (twins) comes home one day and asks that question. You’re right, that is incredibly sad and awful.

And Miley is just once again indicating her lack of class.

  2. Someone else says:

I really don’t think she clearly changed the word “game” to “gay”. The lyrics are so fast that the sounds kind of blur together. If she dropped the m sound, it was probably an accident. This is really just about making something out of nothing.

  3. jess says:

    that ad is gay.

  4. Oi says:

Her BBF Taylor Swift WROTE a song that became a hit using the same insult (picture to burn I think). I think this is a reach. This could have been an accident. Anyone read the teleprompter at the concert? She could have been out of breath or moved the mic away from her mouth at a bad time. I hate to defend her, but you can’t even prove that what people heard is what she said.

  5. Lem says:

    @ THE BOSS
at least you did that this Friday and not next Friday. It could have been MUCH worse!

    @ Miley
it’s no secret we have an all things Miley ban in the house. It’s no secret you made the top worst celebrity influence (way to go!)
Keep sending your vapid interviews to Joel McHale, I might become a fan yet.

  6. Cristina says:

I agree w someone else, above. Seems like u heard what u wanted to hear, maybe? posting a lot of non stories today!

  7. Pont Neuf says:

OMG! OMG! Like, OMG! Miley is like, you know, like, so TRANSGRESSIVE!!!!! Yeah like, a rebellious little nitwit with a brain the size of a pea, who is completely detached from reality. Like, totally.

Now, seriously, is anyone really surprised? I would find it difficult to believe if someone told me that this girl has actually ever read a book from cover to cover. Immaturity, being spoiled and achieving massive success are not a good combination, it seems.

  8. seven says:

Afternoon Pont, Glad to see you as critcal as always… Your comments always seem to bring a smile to my face 😀

  9. Goddess711 says:

Miley’s a fat-faced hillbilly. She needs to get back to the trailer park and shut the eff up for awhile.

  10. bros says:

real musicians dont have to read teleprompters of their own songs in order to perform.

  11. Cat says:

    O.M.G. Those shorts she’s wearing. . .WOWZA

  12. RobN says:

With the speed of those lyrics, you can’t tell what she says, let alone say that she “very clearly” said gay. Not even close.

  13. jm says:

OK, you need to let this one go. You cannot tell whether she said gay or game. No need to go fishing for criticisms.

  14. waldemar says:

Uhm, I think she just sings the word games. I really wanted to hear the word gay and didn´t hear it.

  15. Tia C says:

Yeah, I’m with “someone else” – this is making something out of nothing. I don’t think she said “gay.”

I’m also with Goddess711. Those are always my feelings where this white trash chick is concerned.

  16. Firestarter says:

Gotta go with the masses here and say I can hear
    “games” and not “gay”

  17. Feebee says:

A singer who doesn’t know her own songs well enough to not use a teleprompter? F&cking useless!

    Remember when gay meant happy?

  18. sam says:

    I heard “game”.

  19. Reina says:

Taylor Swift’s song wasn’t really about the guy being gay, I mean: it was one line. That being said, she insinuates not that being gay is a bad thing, but if the heartbreaking boyfriend was gay, it’s pretty obvious that’s the end of a relationship.

  20. Laura says:

    Celebitchy…

She didn’t say gay…the girl always sings live and she ran out of breath and didn’t pronounce the word all the way since she was running around. There is no footage of her doing this at any of her concerts so this is just making something out of nothing.

Miley is a brat but she would never say that in the song. Adam Shankman, one of her mentors his gay and he’s been the one helping her with her forays into less “Disney” music and he’s gay. She would never say that.

Taylor Swift has a song that CALLS the guy gay, not homosexual gay, but in the stupid context, which is just as bad. It’s on her CD and it’s not something you can debate. Your site is usually fair so I feel like if you’re going to come down on Cyrus for “maybe, not sure, is she out of breath or us she just ignorant…” Do the same for Swift.

  21. fizXgirl314 says:

it’s really hard to decipher the subtlety between two consonants when there is really loud music and she’s screaming… someone’s got an agenda it seems :/

  22. Shannon says:

Ugh, using the word “gay” as an insult is so ignorant. I stopped doing it when I was a freshman in high school and realized how insensitive and hurtful it is. I hope that by the time I have kids, it will be unheard of to say it that way.

  23. Bob says:

I was there. She definitely sang: “you’re STRAIGHT, your games, you’re insecure.”

Frankly I’m offended by all the heterophobia I keep hearing in everything everyone says. Who can I sue?

  24. TwinkleToes says:

    http://antiduckface.com/post/173591427/miley-cyrus-the-princess-of-duckface-looked#disqus_thread

miley cyrus, the princess of duckface, looked absolutely ducktastic at the teen choice awards, didn’t she?

    They need to be stopped!

  25. lostmyway says:

She is an ignorant and stupid twat.

  26. GatsbyGal says:

I call things “gay” but only around my boyfriend and brother (we get each other). I’d never use it in public because I know I’ll offend someone.

South Park got it right – “gay” and “fag” are words whose meanings have changed over time. Maybe it’s time for them to change again?

  27. WTF?!? says:

She didn’t “very clearly” say “you’re gay”, this is much ado about nothing.
And now I am doubly irritated at having to defend this bulimic-cheeked, no-talent, obnoxious teenager.

  28. Jeri says:

Gee, why does Miley always need defending. People are always saying”you’re making too much of this.” Maybe she oughta quit acting like a B–TCH and people wouldn’t need to keep making excuses for her.

  29. Amy says:

heh its funny you got hilary duff with a song called think before you speak-she should take her own advice. considering her comments on feminism a few years back, she oughta be thankful for it otherwise she’d be tied to a kitchen sink somewhere as opposed to becoming the actress and singer she is now.

  30. Lily says:

Listen, as a non-famous singer myself, I have to tell you guys that when singing at a certain speed or when possibly being short of breath, words tend to slur together or even in studio recorded songs words are difficult to hear. I like Miley but she sometimes tends to do that. Just listen to one of her songs for example butterfly fly away. At first I couldn’t hear if she said clip your wings or flap your wings. Anyways, she did not say ‘gay’ she said ‘games’ it might have sounded like ‘gay.’ another point: have you ever talked so fast you mixed up words? Like, vowels? She might have done something like that from the words before and after. I’m not sure if that works in this case. But, honestly, stop bashing her for this. It is enough. Anyone who sings knows that sometimes these things happen.

Just a smiling visitor here to share the love (:, btw outstanding design .
