British Vogue: Duchess Meghan is an influencer, just like all of the other royals

As we learned last week, the Duchess of Sussex is fulfilling all of our dreams for her next act: a lifestyle brand called American Riviera Orchard, which will likely sell kitchenware, jams, cookbooks and more. Reportedly, Meghan will also have a cooking show too – which is something a lot of us have always suggested, given her interests. The response from the British media has been predictably unhinged and I’m probably not going to cover most of it, because it feels rote at this point. Meghan breathes and that coven of racist dumbf–ks bays for blood. It’s been over four years since Meghan left those people for good reason. Interestingly enough, it’s not wall-to-wall batsh-ttery over there though – British Vogue ran a pretty straight-forward defense of Meghan and her new venture. Some highlights:

While there are sparse details available about American Riviera Orchard at the moment, one thing that Meghan has included on the Instagram page is her royal title – the bio simply reads, “By Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Established 2024” – which will no doubt irritate some corners of the internet, with the tired implication that she is somehow capitalising on her married status. Yet in many ways, Meghan’s career pivot isn’t at all unusual for a royal – they have been lifestyle influencers, popularising trends, promoting their favourite products and selling their own wares, for centuries now.

After all, what Meghan is doing with American Riviera Orchard isn’t dissimilar to what her father-in-law, King Charles III, did with his Duchy Originals brand – and not just because they both sell jam. Launched in 1990 as a passion project for the then Prince of Wales, it championed his belief in organic farming practices, with milk from cows fed an organic diet and eggs from chickens given ample space to roam and forage. Mocked for what were seen as slightly “out there” views on agriculture for years, Charles was ahead of the curve, and so was Waitrose, who snapped up a partnership with the brand exclusively in 1992. Fast forward 30 years and Duchy Originals has raised in excess of £30 million for The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund, which promotes building sustainable communities, with a reported £3.6 million in profits for Waitrose in 2021 alone.

“The notion that royalty can ever be separated from social and cultural influence is absurd,” shares historian Gareth Russell. “Royal support and royal patronage has huge clout. Obviously, as you enter the 20th century, this role of ‘influencer’ is complicated by the issue of potential commercial gain, but really if you look at things like the Duchy of Cornwall, which has been incredibly successful with its range of organic food, what the Duchess of Sussex is doing is essentially no different to other members of the royal family, including the most senior members.”

In addition to official seals of approval [meaning, royal warrants], the royals have long influenced how we live in other ways, too. “Historically we have seen them wield soft cultural power for brands,” shares Russell. “The popularity of Fabergé in Edwardian society was a direct result of the very public patronage given to them by King Edward VII’s wife, Queen Alexandra, who acquired her taste for Fabergé from her sister, the Empress Maria of Russia… [they] were often seen entering and exiting Fabergé’s store in London. It’s worth noting that neither of them paid full retail price for their pieces.”

Another element of Meghan’s new business suggests she will be either hosting events or that the couple will be renting out accommodation of some description, and again, this isn’t actually entirely new territory for a royal. An outbuilding on the grounds of the Queen Mother’s former home, Castle Mey, was restored and reopened as a bed and breakfast called The Granary by her beloved grandson Charles in 2019, while Prince William now rents out holiday cottages on the Duchy of Cornwall estate, complete with saunas, log burners and heated swimming pools.

“Prince William has done some extraordinary and pretty impressive work to ensure that his office and household are no longer funded by the British taxpayer but by the profits generated from the Duchy of Cornwall,” concludes Russell. “Obviously that’s not solely through commercial endorsements and revenue, and he is still a senior working royal, but it’s worth noting that there is a benefit to this kind of thing whereby royalty explores other options and sources of income, to cease being funded primarily or solely by tax-generated income.”

The thing which irritates me the most about ALL of the conversations about Meghan “using” her title is that all she’s doing is simply going by her married name. Meghan’s critics never just say that – she’s a married woman, using her married name. They treat the Sussex title as their CLAIM on Meghan, that if she still goes by her married name, they still “own” her and her work. Meghan put “American” in the name of her brand on purpose – this is an American project from an American woman (who happens to be married to a British man). While I find this British Vogue piece to be surprisingly sympathetic towards Meghan, they’re still presupposing that Meghan is still expected to work or operate “as a royal.” Also: where did Meghan suggest that she’ll be hosting events or renting out anything? What a completely random claim.

    Nice try:

    1) William has been POW for barely over a year. He has been quite busy…erm…doing pretty much anything besides working to make the Duchy more cost-efficient

    2) WTF is this that “his office and household are no longer funded by the British taxpayer”?? The Duchy of Cornwall is Crown, eg taxpayer, property as is its income. British voters/taxpayers have to date decided to allow to continue the centuries-old agreement that the PoW receives an income from the Duchy to fund his personal (office, “household” meaning servants, and personal like school funds and Kate’s plastic surgery) expenses.

That is entirely within their power to change, if only they would stop voting Tory…

    • Couch Potato says:

Right! Chuck is the one who’s done impressive work with the dutchy. Willnot is just the definition of a nepobaby.

Once again they’re trying to obscure the fact that they’re getting far more than the SG makes it look like,

      • Christine says:

Yeah, the only “work” Willnot has accomplished with regard to the duchy is making sure it didn’t put out a financial report at the end of business year. Shady doesn’t even begin to cover that dude.

If I were Charles, I would be so fucking angry that I spent decades working really hard to create something, only to have to turn it over to Huevo.

    • Shawna says:

If he has been busy, the only thing I could believe him to be busy with is making sure he nails down the Duchy and gets his cash.

    • BeanieBean says:

Quite the blatant lie, that was all down to Charles & everybody knows it.

  2. What’s that saying “you give with the right hand but you take with the left”. It’s a pretty positive article for a British magazine but of course there are some negative little crumbs of nonsense in there too. I can’t wait to see what Meg has in store for this. Yes she is an influencer as they all are with their different things they sell and support with their names and titles glad someone has finally put that into print.

  3. sevenblue says:

No one was this concerned about Duchess of York title even though Fergie and Andrew are divorced. People are going after Meghan for her title because of her race. They wanted Harry to divorce her so they can completely erase her from the royal family. That didn’t happen, so they are trying to make it an issue she is using her title gifted to her by Harry’s grandmother. Like it is said before, either all of them has a special blood or none of them does.

    • Christine says:

She was making commercials for Weight Watchers!!! The hypocrisy of the way they treat Meghan vs. every single other person is astounding. I giggle every time I read about Peter Phillips Chinese milk.

I’m glad British Vogue has the spine to put this out, good for them. Meghan is such a boss.

  4. Nubia says:

Sarah Ferguson still plasters Duchess of York on her books. Enough Said!

    • HeatherC says:

The blackamoor wearing racist has her HRH on the cover of her books

    • Kingston says:

Dont forget the nazi princess who wore the blackamoor brooch to meet M at that first xmas lunch in 2017. The one married to the duke of kent. She writes sleazy royal romance novels and boldly and proudly plasters “HRH Princess Michael of Kent” on the front cover of all her sleazy romance novels.

And she has a website called:
      “HRH Princess Michael of Kent:
The Official website of Princess Michael of Kent.”

And she’s been able to profit off her royal connection peacefully for decades!

    • Blithe says:

      As does Duke of Kent.

  5. suezyqh says:

My takeaway from the article is the reference to the “…extraordinary work and pretty impressive work…” that Prince William has done with his inherited lands and titles. Unfortunately, I was taking a sip of water while reading that line and had a spit-take moment.

  6. swaz says:

This is just ROYAL PROPRAGANDA using Meghan’s name and all her brainstorming and hard work to say BUT William is doing this too 😪😪 If you can’t win them join them 😏😏 they’re just taking a different approach but in the end it’s always pro royal.

    • truthSF says:

THIS!!!! Thank you for spelling it out so simply, SWAZ! This whole article is is just an underhanded way for them to defend Chucky + Bully’ use of tax payers money by claiming that it’s not tax funded (when it 100% is) under the guise of defending Meghan (which they actually never do in this article).

    • Shawna says:

Yep, they’re trying to make KCIII and William look better by putting them in the same class as Meghan.

Now I do think there’s sadly some lost synergy that could have happened between Chucky’s brand and Meghan’s. Like, the two of them really do have some overlapping interests. But no, he chose to sacrifice Meghan to William.

  7. SCAR❤️❤️❤️❤️ says:

Another pieces to the comparison of Meghan’s business ventures to Charles’. Charles received a £45,000,000 RAISE last year. So no matter what he ‘ventures’ out to, he can’t lose. If he fails, the peasants don’t eat, have a home, or some other benefit. He’ll be fine.

  8. HillaryIsAlwaysRight says:

As usual, a Black woman works hard to make something and a white man tries to take away her shine.

  9. Eurydice says:

Meghan’s not like the other royals – she’s what the royals would like to be. She’s actually influencing them.

People had a nice piece a couple of days ago about Meghan’s various ventures.

  10. Someone_Hears_a_Who says:

I wonder if the “hosting events” is inspired by the quote in Endgame from a source about her plans: a source said Meghan is building “something more accessible … something rooted in her love of details, curating, hosting, life’s simple pleasures, and family.”

I don’t think the source was suggesting that she would actually be hosting events though.

  11. Amy Bee says:

Last month the press said that the royals were concerned that Harry and Meghan’s money would run out and that they would turn to them for financial support. The press and the Palace should be happy that Meghan has launched a new business venture.

  12. L4Frimaire says:

I hope Meghan’s voice doesn’t end up being drowned out by products and lifestyle. I’m really excited about the podcast , love appearances like SXSW, and wish she’d speak more on the topics she supports like media literacy. I want deep dives on that, empowering girls, equal pay and parental leave. I was never familiar with the Tig so never missed it. This seems fun income generator but hope she doesn’t end up bring defined by this after all she’s done and can do.

    • Couch Potato says:

I think she’ll keep on doing her good work, while having a (hopefully) steady income outside the pods/series etc from their production company. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of products ARO will sell.

    • Shawna says:

I think it’s smart to leaven the serious stuff with lighter fare. Meghan doesn’t have the kind of money to throw around like MacKenzie Scott (Bezos divorce fortune), so it would be hard work to stay relevant just by the big issues. I’m more likely to pay attention to Meghan’s political statements and charities if she’s staying in the news in a variety of glamorous ways.

Plus, if she’s championing women-owned businesses and Black-owned businesses, it’s two birds with one stone.

      • L4Frimaire says:

Philanthropy doesn’t pay for itself but I get the impression she’s still trying to figure things out.

  13. Nerd says:

Meghan and Harry received their Dukedoms from the Queen when they married, just as other Royal family members have received their new titles once they married. So Sussex is both of their married names. Fergie who actually divorced Andrew decades ago has always maintained her Duchess of York title even though she is no longer a married in royal wife. Throughout all of this time since the Yorks divorce and Harry and Meghan stepping down and moving away, the QUEEN. The actual QUEEN, has never once attempted to take those titles away from them, so why then are the haters proclaiming to know more of what the Queen wanted or expected. She allowed them to keep those titles when she could have taken the measures to remove them, but instead had maintained a close relationship with them even when they spoke to Oprah and the word was out that Harry had a memoir. She maintained a close enough relationship that she had Zoom calls with them and their children. She sent Archie a waffle maker. She snuck them in to see her secretly in Windsor. She personally invited them to attend her Jubilee. She provided them with her own personal security from the moment they arrived in the UK until they left. She allowed them to keep their home on the Windsor Estate to ensure their safety and security. She met privately with them and their children during that visit. She allowed them to have their own procession during her Jubilee service at the church. The Queen regardless of her faults has been more of a family to them than any of them. So they will continue to use their MARRIED NAMES in honor of the Queen and most importantly, in honor of the vows they took before God.

  14. concern fae says:

Thanks for bringing up the name thing. It really goes to show how the RF is just useless. They haven’t come up with updated ways of referring to married in women, despite the fact that the “correct” ones are so old fashioned newspapers aren’t willing to use them. If you followed palace rules, Meghan should be called Princess Harry. I remember there were complaints at the time that Diana wasn’t properly Princess Diana, she should be called either Princess Charles or Diana, Princess of Wales.

They’ve had a generation to come up with some sort of publishable name for royal wives, but they’d rather have all these headlines about Kate Middleton disappearing. At least she’s getting called Princess Kate now, even though it’s not “correct.”

  15. Just Jade says:

They are afraid of competition because Meghan is too smart for them. That was never the plan for the Spare’s wife.

  16. mary Pester says:

Megan can do whatever the hell Megan wants and the British rags of every description can go suck lemons. All Megan had to consider was what if any impact this would have on her children, because she knows, no matter what, she has Harry’s full support!
Billy idol has done fk all for the Dutchy apart from TALK about building for the homeless, but the amount of money and the quantity he talked about has been laughed at and called out by charities. He talks a good “aren’t I wonderful” game, but the actual WORK in the Dutchy was done by his father, all he’s doing is what he’s always done, clout chase, just like he tried with Harry’s invictus.

  17. Surly Gale says:

When I was in England my sister-in-law introduced me to Charles’ white cheddar cheese. I have never tasted cheese like that since, though now I do buy white cheddar vs orange cheddar. The best cheddar cheese ever IMO!
That is all I have ~

  18. Izzy says:

“It’s worth noting that neither of them paid full retail price for their pieces.” When I tell you that I CACKLED.

“Prince William has done some extraordinary and pretty impressive work to ensure that his office and household are no longer funded by the British taxpayer but by the profits generated from the Duchy of Cornwall.” And that money comes from… tenants. Who are not allowed to own the land there.

  19. Shawna says:

If Meghan starts going by the name “Meghan Markle,” imagine the divorce stories that would be thrown around. What do they WANT her to call herself if not her married name?
