Someone has finally written a biography of Gwyneth Paltrow! Gwyneth must love/hate that. She loves it because she loves being famous enough for a biography, but she hates having her dirty laundry out there. I have no idea if Gwyneth in any way “authorized” Amy Odell’s Gwyneth: The Biography, but I find it interesting that Gwyneth didn’t shut it down, and that People Mag is running excerpts from the book as their exclusive cover story. Gwyneth’s getting the kind of treatment People Mag would give to Jackie Kennedy or Princess Diana. I didn’t go into these excerpts expecting to enjoy them as much as I did, but there’s some real vintage gossip in here and it’s really fun. Some highlights:
Her yearbook: In her senior yearbook, she borrowed her parting words from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure: “Be excellent to each other and party on, dudes.” In the “Nightmare” column, other students got things [written by yearbook editors] like “AP Spanish Lang.” Gwyneth’s was “Obesity.”
Meeting Brad Pitt: She dropped out of UC Santa Barbara early on, and in 1994 she met Brad Pitt at an audition for Legends of the Fall. She didn’t get the part, but he later suggested she play his wife in the film Se7en. However, she received another offer to appear with Keanu Reeves in Feeling Minnesota. Unsure which one to take, she consulted with a friend, who said, “Well, who do you want to date, Brad Pitt or Keanu Reeves?” Gwyneth chose Se7en and Pitt, and Cameron Diaz took the Feeling Minnesota part. The Pitt-Paltrow romance didn’t stay hidden for long. The two would walk around the set holding hands, and smoked cigarettes together outside their trailers, Gwyneth holding hers like a thirties movie star.
She thought Brad was low-class: During Emma’s filming, Gwyneth expressed doubts to one crew member that Pitt was right for her, and admitted that she had a crush on Hugh Grant. “Brad and I had very different upbringings,” she told an interviewer. “So when we go to restaurants and order caviar, I have to say to Brad, ‘This is beluga and this is osetra.’ ” After Emma came out, Gwyneth went over to [her friend, makeup artist Kevyn] Aucoin’s place and cried about Pitt multiple times. He wanted to be with her but seemed to feel threatened by her success and all the attention she received. [Aucoin’s] advice to Gwyneth was frank, “You really need to end this.”
She banged John Hannah!? Gwyneth and Pitt never publicly gave a concrete reason for their [1997] breakup, though two people recalled a rumor about it stemming from Gwyneth cheating on Pitt [with costar John Hannah] while she was filming Sliding Doors. She told Howard Stern in 2015: “I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me.”
Dating Ben Affleck: Affleck was struggling with alcoholism and a gambling habit around the time he met Gwyneth, who was attracted to his intellect. Her friends had reservations about him, because he didn’t always reciprocate her affection. He at times seemed more interested in playing video games with the guys at his house than being with Gwyneth. She spoke openly about how much she enjoyed their sex life. She told Aucoin one day that she loved when Affleck [engaged in a certain sex act].
The Winona Ryder rumor: When she got the script for Shakespeare in Love, which started filming in 1998, she first turned it down without reading the entire thing. Winona Ryder’s name had also been bandied about for the role. “It was never sent to Winona as an offer, but Winona wanted to do the part and Gwyneth had recommended her for the part,” said [producer Harvey] Weinstein. After a story about Gwyneth allegedly stealing the script from Winona’s coffee table reached the media, Gwyneth told friends that Ryder had started the rumor, and insisted she’d received the script through her agent. Shakespeare in Love opened on December 11 to ravishing reviews.
Her famous pink Ralph Lauren dress: She was nominated for an Oscar in 1999 and Ralph Lauren was asked to design her gown. She requested a design inspired by Grace Kelly. Leading up to the awards, she hadn’t been eating much and kept losing weight, necessitating extra fittings, where Gwyneth asked the Ralph Lauren team in New York to bring the neckline lower and lower. Lauren became so frustrated that he didn’t want to send the dress back to Los Angeles. But his team convinced him, and found a skilled seamstress to fit the pieces of the dress onto Gwyneth there. The designers at Ralph Lauren noticed that something looked off when she wore it that night. The fabric was puckering, a little wrinkly, loose around her torso — as if she had instantly lost 10 pounds. They realized she hadn’t worn the inner detachable corset that came with the gown, which would have made it fit more snugly. Lauren was not happy about the fit.
Falling for Chris Martin: Both aspired to some kind of soulful, intellectual seriousness at a moment when their work was pulling them toward mass appeal and triviality. Yet her friends felt like something didn’t quite click. Martin was an introvert who could be socially awkward. But he was incredible onstage, and Gwyneth, who was ready to settle down, was seduced by his persona.
Ending her friendship with Madonna: A few years later, Gwyneth’s friendship with longtime pal Madonna crumbled. Their relationship reached a breaking point when Madonna showed up to an island where Gwyneth and Martin were vacationing. Madonna seemed to know that Gwyneth would be there, which Gwyneth seemed to find strange, a friend remembered. Madonna then insisted Gwyneth and Martin join her for a big group dinner at a long table where Madonna went off on her daughter, Lourdes. Gwyneth and Martin were disgusted by the behavior. “I can’t be around this woman anymore,” Martin told Gwyneth. “She’s awful.” Gwyneth agreed that Madonna was toxic and ended the friendship.
I always forget the John Hannah rumor, damn it. But I always remember the Viggo rumor, and I’m disappointed that it wasn’t included in these excerpts. Gwyneth really was That Girl in the ‘90s. She had ‘em coming and going. That part about Brad being jealous of her success is interesting, but the stuff about Affleck… well… yeah. The moody addict who is good in bed. It’s also interesting to get a confirmation on Madonna and Gwyneth’s split – they really were close at one point, and the rumor back then was that they stopped being friends after something to do with Tracy Anderson. And the Winona rumor! So much vintage gossip, so little time. The Winona stuff makes me think that Gwyneth did authorize this biography a little bit.

Ah Gwynnie, forever the proverbial cheerleader talking about her heydays in high school
That said, I’d really love to get Winona’s side of everything
Hard agree. Winona, imo, has more class. She had her troubles. Still more class. Love the dish that she found Affleck more intelligent. She doesn’t equate intelligence with Brad. Not an Affleck fan. It made me laugh though.
The caviar quote is really something. At last Gwyneth and I have something else in common besides amazing smelling cooches. Because I also won’t date a man who doesn’t know his beluga from his osetra.
The caviar comment is typical Gwyn snobbery.
Brad Pitt is an overrated, domestic abuser, addict, fame whore but I actually like the fact that he didn’t know what caviar was.
I’m not impressed by caviar.
🤷🏻♀️
The photo chose of Brad Pitt makes him look like such a Karen.
Bwahahaha!
And Ol’ Affleck likes to get drunk and go downtown. This is the juicy vintage gossip I needed today.
Affleck certainly wouldn’t have known the difference. Chris Martin? Doubtful.
She’s weird.
Brad Pitt was not jealous of her success LOL he dumped her because she cheated on him. His star rose fast.
She did NOT dump Madonna it was the other way around. Chris even dumped Gwen because her and Tracey were toxic together. Remember the Met Gala Gwen was insufferable to everyone. Everyone knew Gewen got kinds of obsessed with Madonna.
She stole that part from Winona. It was well knows that at that point in Winona career she was handed scrips she didn’t even need to audition but nepo baby Gwen hadn’t made her mark yet and was just making a lot of random films. It burns her that the truth came out. This is why Winona ended their friendship.
And that’s the TEA.🍵🍵
Considering the digs Paltrow has taken at “frenemies”, I hope one day Winona talks.😉😉
I bet Winona never does. That’s not her style.
Lol, not trying to be cheeky but how are you so confident in what you state? Do you know these people?
@grant its called having memory Gwen cant keep up with her own lies. She said she cheated on Brad and that is why he dumped her. She also said she regretted it and that he was to good for her that she wasn’t ready. Its in print from her own mouth.
The Madonna thing was well publicized about Gwen getting so fascinated with her and wanting to be around her more then her own husband. Gwen went way to deep into unhealthy works outs and eating with Tracy Anderson and that is why Madonna started ignoring her. At that time Gwen was what Katy Perry is now laughing stock and no on wanted to be near her this is when she did the whole press tour about how stupid the met gala was because everyone ignored her including Madonna.
The Winona thing was 100% truth. Kate Moss Winona and Drew where the it girls and they didn’t like Gwen but warmed up to her because she tried so hard. That was know that Winona was being offered that part so no other actresses were even being considered. She saw the script at Winona’s house and went around her back to audition and said she would do it for less money. Winona was a huge star. Look at the time line of when they were friends and when they stopped. Gwen wasn’t at the caliber of being offered roles out right. She out maneuvered Winona and used her family connections to secure the part.
@grant more proof is at how much Gwen loved it when Winona was caught shop lifting look at that time line. She openly mocked her so there was a fallout. Yes it was dumb that she did that but by then she had her oscar and now felt free to step on anyone that she was jealous of because Winonas named her as the person that stole the part while pretending to be her friend.
Not according to producer Ed Zwick who wrote about the whole prolonged SIL process in his autobiography. He’d offered the part to Kate Winslet after Julia Roberts pulled out. Winona was sent the script but not an offer. Zwick did write that Gwyneth supposedly heard about it from Winona though. She went to Weinstein who went to Zwick.
The whole story is fascinating. Julia wanted DD Lewis and basically tanked everyone else. Including hot Ralph Fiennes. When DDL wouldn’t do it she dropped out, costing the studio $6 million and Zwick full control of the project.
This has to be authorized and assisted by her because these excerpts are quite the tell. In every one SHE is superior in these telling. Better than Brad, Ben, Winona, and Madonna….better than all of them during their heyday. Sure Jan
Omg! what is the Viggo rumor?
it was pretty widely discussed when they made “A Perfect Murder” together that they had something more than a fling.
That pic of GP with Winona just reminded me of how effortlessly beautiful Winona was, and how beautiful she still is.
No thoughts on straw-haired GP.
Agree re Winona. Just love her.
Reality Bites is one of my favourite films (as problematic as the male characters are) and it’s because of her. Just always so effortlessly cool.
Am I missing something? Why would Brad Pitt be jealous of her success? He’s always been the bigger star. Weren’t they broken up by the time she got the Oscar? (the peak point of her acting career). He couldn’t have been jealous of her at the point, since I thought they were broken up by then.
I also think he probably does know his caviar (given his level of wealth and fame), but like most people probably doesn’t care which is which. I’m trying to think whether I would care even if I was that wealthy. He wasn’t poor when he met her.
Pitt definitely dated “up” careerwise intentionally and he mirrored the aesthetics of each partner. His breakout role was in Thelma and Louise but Interview with the Vampire, Legends of the Fall, and Se7en were what truly put him on the map.
He was not the child of Bruce Paltrow and Blythe Danner to put it lightly. His godfather was not Steven Spielberg. I can absolutely see him being threatened by her success.
Given how vindictive he still is towards Angelina Jolie, I don’t know why him and Paltrow being broken up would have precluded him still being jealous of her.
I just think she achieved her greater success after they broke up. The timeline doesn’t make sense to me.
He was credited with making Gwyneth famous. No one knew who she was till she dated him. I know she has big connections, but in terms of calculable success and fame he was the bigger star and she benefited more from his star power than she did from being connected to her parents. People used to make jokes about Gwyneth becoming famous because of Pitt and owing the upswing of her career trajectory to him.
I think he’s capable of being jealous, but not in the timeline they’re talking about. She hit her greatest success with the Oscar, which he could have been jealous of, but they were broken up by that point.
I think of Pitt in the same vein as Tom
Cruise — someone who doesn’t mind dating well-known women, although Gwyneth only became well known after she dated him, rather than the other way around.
Crystal, the “… he mirrored the aesthetics of each partner…” is so true. Every time I see him with partners throughout the years (and especially with the photo of him and Goop in this article, I think of the Runaway Bride where she discovers she doesn’t even like eggs. It’s creepy and blatant when you see him and Goop / Jennifer / Angie / etc.
Thinking – He dated people more established than him from the 1980’s onwards and then household names (let’s not forget he dated Shane McCall and Juliette Lewis when they were 15 and 16 and he was 9 and 10 years older than them). Then Paltrow, then Aniston, then Jolie.
Yes, she achieved greater critical recognition after they broke up, but she was a famous nepo baby and he wasn’t and I’m sure that played a role. Some men get resentful when their “protegees” take off, too (as they see them). But she was always a bigger “celebrity” than him.
Again, why do you think them being broken up means he wasn’t necessarily jealous of her? He’s STILL attacking Angelina all the time and tried to sabotage her Maria success if reports are to be believed.
As someone who was around then, she may not have broken through to lead roles yet (these were the days when nepo babies still had to work their way up through smaller roles), but she was definitely someone known in the industry and clearly pegged as a star of the future. Her role as a low life thief and skank in Flesh and Bone made me sit up and notice her. I’ve always liked her work (when she puts in the effort). She always seemed a bit awful, but perhaps a bit more honest about it than most actresses. I will definitely get myself on the library waitlist for this.
My Paltrow memory is that she was the first celebrity who went public about getting a full Brazilian. Now everyone but me seems to have a bald p#ssy. Actually, I don’t know whether the women I know do or don’t, it’s just seems that way from what I read.
And Feeling Minnesota was when Keanu was living at Chateau Marmont and showing up everywhere looking very unwashed and high AF. Now I want to do a rewatch, because maybe Gwyneth might have made it work.
I don’t think he’s incapable of being jealous (for example of Jolie), but Gwyneth still speaks fondly of him. She says she made the biggest error and wasn’t ready for him. So I guess I’m going by her own words. Her interviews indicated she did something (cheated?) which led to a breakup. She also says he stood up to Weinstein or something to that effect. I think he became a weird person later on with Jolie, but her assessment of him alwats sounds positive and as if she made some grand mistake ( which she is kind of cryptic about). But maybe she likes the publicity so she’s pretending about having a positive impression of him. Who knows. But her own words lead me to believe he wasn’t jealous of her, in particular, though I have no doubt he would have treated other women badly in their contexts their experiences with him. It’s her own words that lead me to believe that other issues came between them rather than jealousy. She sounds too positive about him in general for me to believe jealousy broke them up. However, she does allude to something she did and her regrets about the relationship ending.
@Thinking
It’s a laughable rewrite of history that she gave him fame.😂😂😂
There is still a video on Youtube of the 1994 LOTF premiere in London, in the presence of then Prince Chuck.
Gwyneth gets out of the car – smirking – to dead silence, compared to the uproar when Pitt showed.
Paltrow was a no-name, Carolyn Bessette wannabe.
@Jegede … Agreed. I came here to say the same thing, as someone who was also around when all of this happened.
No matter how people might feel about Brad Pitt today, he was the SH$T in the 1990s and 2000s, extremely popular, and he was definitely the STAR in their relationship and got all of the attention. At that time Brad was also a huge internationally known ‘face’ because he had so many endorsements around the world. Everybody knew who he was.
Many people also forget that Gwyneth and Brad were engaged at the time they broke up. I’ve always thought that Gwyneth was obsessed with Ben Affleck and broke off her engagement with Pitt for him. Mainly because she ran straight to NYC to stay with Winona Ryder, who was dating Matt Damon at the time. There was a photo of Gwyneth and Winona in one of the gossip mags in a NYC club drinking and laughing it up 2 days after news of her breakup with Brad. And who was Matt Damon’s ride or die besty at the time? Ben Affleck.
Gwyneth was such an entitled pill. She mellowed a lot during her marriage to Chris.
She had made Emma and was THE Hollywood It Girl. The miramax darling. On countless covers. He was super popular but regarded as a lightweight pretty boy even after Se7en. I think it was her indie cred he was jealous of. Miramax was the place to be in the 90s.
Agree. He was a big star but wasn’t taken seriously as an actor. She was taken seriously immediately, party due to her pedigree and connections. I don’t doubt that was part of her appeal and that he also was resentful of it.
There was that whole Weinstein mess to deal with at Miramax. I can’t imagine Brad Pitt being jealous of Gwyneth having to deal with that nonsense. I imagine he would have been frustrated with Weinstein trying to harass his girlfriend though.
She was the darling of Miramax but behind the scenes Pitt would have gotten a glimpse of the shenanigans she had put up with. Being jealous of that doesn’t make sense to me.
Erm John Hannah had just gotten married (1996) when they were filming Sliding Doors (1997). And his wife was in the movie too
I lived through the late ’90s and NEVER heard this about Gwynnie and Mr. Hannah, I’m a bit shocked by this revelation
Well, no matter the truth of their relationship, Gywnnie was right about one thing: John Hannah was too good for her.
Did Keanu dodge a bullet?
Brad Pitt IS low class. That bit about caviar is hilarious.
I think he’s problematic, but I find it weird when actors in the same profession find each other low class. I really don’t get it — they’re all doing the same job.
She thinks everyone is beneath her. She’s a walking embodiment of the word insufferable.
Eh.
Of course the incident hadn’t happened yet, but personally I’ll take a snob over a drunken child strangler.
And by that time he had been dating children so I don’t really care if she was snobbish to him.
Snobbery often goes with the territory with actors, unfortunately. Between insecurity and vanity, that’s a way some performers make themselves feel better. And Gwyneth is a “Hollywood Royalty” nepo-baby, so she’s got one virulent case going…
I have to say to Brad, ‘This is beluga and this is osetra.”
I’m dying over that one. Peasants can be is disappointing.
She was the 90s mean girl!
🤣
Exactly!
This peasant grew up salmon fishing here in the PNW also catching delicious sunfish in the lakes.
How gauche!
” This is beluga and this is osetra” sounds right out of The Royal Tenenbaums.
Oh, it is right out of Dynasty! Dominique Deveraux’s (Diahann Carroll) *pristine* shade at Alexis Carrington Colby — “This is Osetrova, and I prefer Petrossian Beluga.” That line was delivered in with a side of dry ice, it was so cold!
Oh wow I’m an old so I guess I’m going to go out and get a copy of people mag for this first time in years and years. They always have more in the printed copy than they give out online and this is my time folks. People seem to don’t really understand how she was a big celebrity then which is different than being known just as an actor which is what Brad hadn’t been with up to that point. People were obsessed with how she looked, dressed, decorated her houses, acted etc up until around the late 2000s when everyone turned on her when they couldn’t get enough of her before. Vanity Fair even was looking to do a profile around 2012 about this (kinda like Blake lively now?) but she freaked out and asked everyone to stonewall VF. They ended up not doing the expose which later I figured she didn’t want anyone to know at the time she and Chris had separated.
Everyone mentioned who Brad Pitt was dating. That’s more or less how she became famous at first. He was definitely the bigger star. She leveraged it, and took off but she was definitely not well known till she dated him. She became a celebrity afterwards, but the only reason I came to know who she was was because her romance with Pitt was heavily promoted. You couldn’t pick up a profile without his name being mentioned. Maybe Miramax promotion helped as well. She was not famous when she actually started dating him. He made her famous. Maybe her snobbiness kind of made her fascinating though. Carolyn Bessette was the one with the style, which she copied,
She also dated Affleck. That romance also helped her fame. Annd then came Martin. Maybe her current husband is the least famous among them.
Honestly, I didn’t even know who her mother was till she started dating Pitt. She’d mention them in interviews, but I would have had no clue who Blythe Danner was till Gwyneth dated Pitt. Even her parents benefited from the Pitt association. Did anyone really care who the director of St . elsewhere was till she dated Pitt?
Obesity? Klassy, Gwynnie.
In her defense, that’s what the yearbook editors wrote FOR her. Gross.
I love being reminded of when Gwyneth and Brad had matching blonde highlights and short cuts.
So Paltrow felt she had a choice between Pitt and Reeves and she chose Pitt? I think she chose poorly but she has always been a huge snob. I do not hate her at all but I do not think that much of her either. All those advantages and she has not done anything worthwhile or added anything to the world
My guess it wasn’t so much HER choice – I’d like to imagine Keanu had the sense to steer clear of her vapid elitism and passed on any romance – so she ended up with someone just as obnoxious and self inflated: Brad.
You nailed it. Keanu is a genuinely nice person, he wouldn’t have made it far with ultimate mean girl, vapid, elitist Gwen
I thought that pink dress that she wore the night she won the Oscar was hideous and I will die on this hill. The top part did not fit her at all and so typical of her not wearing the dress correctly like the designed instructed her to do.
Yeah, if it’s true that she was aiming for a Grace Kelly look, she missed it by a continent.
People who are commenting on it not being true that Gwyneth and Brad may have had issues because of his problem with her becoming very famous don’t know the timeline. She wasn’t famous when they first started but she steadily became a major “It” girl and was on tons of magazine covers and was very popular in the back half of their relationship. I don’t think the book is saying they broke up because she became more popular, only that he had issues with her increased popularity and all that went with that. She was his “plus one” and then all of a sudden she was everywhere on her own and that might have stung for him.
Gwyneth gave interviews where she implied she made a big mistake and that it was her error. That’s why some of what is in the book is being looked at critically.
She also made digs at Aniston being “that television girl” which seemed to indicate she had a hard time with him
moving on.
She also spends a lot of time talking about her ex-boyfriends. She’s kind of an open book. So when you piece together her words, this new information in the book is surprising.
I hear rumours back in the day that Madonna made a play for Chris Martin and that instigated the end of the friendship with Goop. I also remember Winona talking about an unamed “frenemy” which could have been Goop and it was around the time the Shakespeare in Love script-stealing rumours were circulating.
Ravishing reviews?! Reviews aren’t ravishing. Rave reviews maybe? People Mag really has some hack writers.
Winona and Gwyneth stopped talking to each other. Was it because Winona spread the rumour or because Gwyneth stole the script? So many questions..,
The book is written by Amy Odell who also wrote Anna Wintour’s biography which was a great read. It was said at the time Anna gave her consent to Odell to interview people about her. I would imagine this is the same sort of deal the writer has with Gwyneth.
It’s coming back to me now. J-Lo was snarky and said Gwyneth got hot by association with Brad and didn’t know much of what Gwyneth had been in or something to that effect 🤣 Then I think a publicist put a muzzle on Jlo.
I find it weird Gwyneth was attracted to Affleck’s intellect. Didn’t Gwyneth say he’d be happy with a beer and something else…? (It had something to do with a kind of woman he likes.)
There’s no new information here that Gywnyth hasn’t already spilled about herself at some point. I find it suspicious that the author is quoting Kevyn Aucoin when he’s been dead for 24 years.
The Winona friendship was weird. I think she stayed at Winona’s apartment after she broke up with Pitt and social climbed. Gwyneth was the one who hinted that Winona was a frenemy and karma came to her (Ugh). She didn’t name Winona but I remember thinking it was her.
I met Gwyneth Paltrow briefly when she was dating Brad Pitt. My friends and I were having afternoon tea at Lady Mendl’s, and GP was there with her hairstylist, maybe? Anyway, she was very nice to us. My friend reminded her that she’d babysat GP at Williamstown. I remember asking her about doing theatre, and she mentioned that it would be hard for her because her boyfriend (Brad Pitt) was always working, and she wouldn’t get to see him as much if she were doing theatre.
I’m a trashy celeb gossip hound so I’ll probably be reading this biography, LOL! I’ll report back so y’all don’t have to.
My takeaway from this new biography- it’s Ben Affleck she always wanted. But he was not that into her. Not the plot twist I was expecting!!!
He really has a hold in women.
He’s an alcoholic who likes video games, but women want him real bad. Wtf.
Intelligent, handsome, has a dark side, allegedly great in the sack. Aloof and hard to tie down. “He will change for meeeeee” i get it. Not my preferred trope buts lots of women fall for that type.
@Thinking-
The only problem I have with that is that Paltrow has also been quite vocal about the fact that her parents didn’t care for Affleck. AT ALL.
And knowing ow deeply Gwyneth completely idolised her father, Bruce, I can’t imagine a world were she would have made a choice to upset him.
Also remember Martin was the one who pulled the plug on their marriage, Gwyneth didn’t want a divorce.
Now I want a crossover after that reminder that Brad takes over the aesthetic of whoever he’s dating or married to. Brad and Kate. Both of them are massive copykeeners. They could share wiglets.
While I enjoyed reading this too, if these are the excerpts it sounds like it’s just a collection of gossip from magazines over the years rather than bringing any actual insight or news.
The thing with Gwyneth is that she has always been hilariously out of touch. That’s what makes her so…. “newsworthy”.
She’s privileged, but there are so many privileged people you can read about these days. Yet her desire to state or make sure you know her privilege even though there are so many others like her is always funny to me. There’s a growing gap between rich and poor but the likes of people at her level of rich isn’t that rare. But she acts like she’s a unique breed among other rich people, which makes the caviar bit even funnier. Like there are actual wealthier people above her that might think she’s beneath THEM.
I do buy that Madonna is completely insufferable.
I loved her music and style in the 80s, but I wouldn’t have wanted her to be my friend.
