George Clooney’s girlfriend to guest star on TNT’s Leverage

82nd Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals
Is Elisabetta Canalis on the way out? Clooney has an M.O. of taking his girlfriend to one last red carpet affair, making sure she’s set up with some kind of career opportunity, and then moving on to date other cocktail waitresses and women who don’t threaten his commitment-phobic ego. Judging from Clooney’s grumpy, drunken demeanor at the Oscars, he probably wasn’t thrilled with his either his chance at taking home at statue again or his date. As Kaiser reported yesterday, Clooney is looking much happier at work in Hawaii, presumably without Elisabetta. Maybe he added an Italian bauble to his anti-marriage shrine and is breathing a sigh of relief.

Now that we’re hearing that Elisabetta will guest star on TNT’s Leverage, I’m thinking a split announcement is imminent. I’m probably just hoping that Clooney is single again after that dream I had last night where I was sipping champagne with him in a hot tub. (I know it’s cliche, but it was a pretty good dream.)

n America, Elisabetta Canalis is best known as George Clooney’s girlfriend. Now, she’s about to give audiences in the U.S. a taste of her acting talents.

Canalis, 31, will appear in five episodes of the TNT drama Leverage when the show, starring Timothy Hutton, begins its third season this summer. She will play a mysterious woman simply known as “the Italian.”

Canalis, who began dating Clooney, 48, last summer and has been by his side throughout Hollywood’s award-show season, is a popular TV presenter and actress in her native Italy. She made her professional debut 10 years ago on the satirical daily news show Striscia la Notizia and has appeared in various movies and TV series, including this year’s Fratelli Benvenuti.

Leverage features a gang of con artists who exact revenge against those who use power and wealth to victimize people.

[From People]

My mom loves Leverage and I’ve watched a couple of episodes. It’s a fun ensemble show that’s like The Italian Job meets A Team. The premise is that a team of smart, trained people help right wrongs with high tech gadgetry and swift action. The scenarios are highly implausible, but that’s a minor complaint.

Mild spoilers for past Leverage episodes
Leverage stars Timothy Hutton and he has this really gorgeous charismatic right hand woman played by a dark-haired British actress named Gina Bellman. Last month they brought in a new member, though, actress Jeri Ryan, and although I like her she kind of threw off the dynamic of the show. Bellman’s character was then relegated to videoconferencing appearances, but now she’s back and Ryan is probably leaving. I really hope that whatever they do with Canalis she won’t be joining their team. It doesn’t sound promising that she’ll be in a full five episodes, though. They already screwed things up by marginalizing Bellman. I don’t particularly like Canalis or have much faith in her acting ability, but her guest stint is likely to raise viewership at least. If you’re in the US, you can watch full episodes of Leverage on TNT.com.

Oh, great! *sarcasm* I love that show and I had to deal with that ditz Ryan the whole last season. Now this. *sighs in disgust*

I think the reason Bellman was “relegated to video-conferencing scenes” is because she was pregnant and/or had just had the baby when they were filming that season. She did return IRL in the last episode, though.

I SO lost the office pool about George and Elisabetta! I was sure that he would have dumped her once the Oscars were over and he no longer had to play at being ‘respectable’.

I love this show! if you don’t watch it you should! Lets hope this moron doesn’t screw it up. And I wish Chris Kane would get more work. He’s a great guy and a pretty good actor. Not a bad musician either.

“Leverage” is one of my favorite shows. It’s really fun and smart and every cast member is gorgeous. Gina Bellman was not marginized, she was pregnant. She gave birth to a daughter this past November and is back. I thought Jeri Ryan was just fine as her replacement. She was supposed to be sort of an “outsider” and the team was suspect of her motives. She did the job she was supposed to do.

I can’t imagine what part Canalis will play for five episodes but she can’t be all bad. I mean, how hard can it be for a beautiful Italian person to play a beautiful Italian person? The show comes back in June, I think.

When my boyfriend saw Elisabetta’s tats on the Oscar pre-show, he said: “What’s George doing with that skank?” (He can say that because he used to work for George’s father). I said: “You should have seen the last skank he dumped. She was a Las Vegas cocktail waitress.” And, there you have it. George’s dating profile. He’ll just go to “Beards ‘R Us” and pick up another one.

Bellman was on maternity leave. She couldn’t be in every episode during that because of the premise of the show. thank god jeri is leaving though-never liked her character

How come so many of you think George is gay? He never beeped on my gaydar, so I’m really curious. Any explanations would be welcome, thanks! :)

I think all this rewarding bad behavior (or in this case, no behavior) is the sign of the apocalypse. I know, let’s give an entitled rich girl burglar her own reality show so she can become a “legitimate” celebrity, and we’ll give an actor’s arm-candy a guest-spot that other actors who have worked their butts off through years of rejection would kill for, and maybe when we’re done we can give an athlete’s fuck-buddy a job hosting a television show.

Sound good? Glad everyone’s on board. Our next stop: hell. Choo Choo.

@2 how do you know you lost your bet? Have they been seen as a couple since the Oscars? Her deal to guest star on Leverage was done last year. They could well be finished with the relationship. The Vegas girl only lasted a couple of months past the Oscars.

Leverage is a fun show, sort of the antithesis of Lost in intensity. I think the show did a good job integrating Jeri Ryan during Gina Bellman’s maternity leave, so I’ll trust them with George’s arm candy, especially if it means the show gets renewed.
