King Charles is quietly allowing Princess Beatrice & Eugenie to take up royal work

Late last week, the palace announced that Princess Beatrice was being “given” a pseudo-royal patronage. Basically, then-Prince Andrew was the patron of Outward Bound before he resigned in disgrace from many of his patronages in 2019. Beatrice simply took over her father’s OB patronage and it was that was up until a few months ago, when she was rather suddenly pushed out. As it turns out, Prince Edward is the official new patron of Outward Bound, but Beatrice is the “deputy patron.” Interesting choreography, right? Then on Monday, Beatrice did what looked like a regular royal engagement – she visited Chelsea and Westminster Hospital to check in on the work of Borne, a charity dealing with premature babies. This choreography is being done purposefully, according to the Mail’s Richard Eden. It’s all part of the “deal” cooked up by Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and King Charles. Not only do Beatrice and Eugenie keep their titles, but Charles is openly allowing Beatrice to become a half-in working royal.

What was it that persuaded Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, as he is now known, to move out of Royal Lodge, his 30-room ‘palace’ at Windsor and accept the loss of his titles and honours, too? I can reveal that it was made clear to Andrew that, while his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson would also lose her title, there would be no action taken against their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Both would retain the title of princess, even though their father can no longer style himself prince. Andrew was told that both women would also retain their places in the line of succession to the throne – ninth in Beatrice’s case and 12th in Eugenie’s.

Beatrice, 37, would also remain one of seven Counsellors of State legally entitled to stand in for the King if he cannot undertake his official duties due to temporary illness or absence abroad.

There is, however, another aspect of this ‘secret deal’ between the King and his brother Andrew that I can now disclose. It was agreed that not only would there be no action taken by the King against Beatrice and Eugenie, 35, but they would be allowed to accept new official royal roles.

The first evidence of the deal was provided last Friday, barely a week after the King announced that he was stripping Andrew of his titles and honours. Outward Bound, one of the charities most closely associated with the Royal Family, announced that Beatrice had been appointed as its new Deputy Patron. The new Royal Patron was her uncle Prince Edward. Both appointments were approved by the King and, in Bea’s case, it was hugely significant.

Outward Bound is not the only good cause with which Beatrice is involved. On Monday, she visited Chelsea and Westminster Hospital to see the charity Borne’s research laboratories and learn more about the organisation’s work to prevent premature birth. Beatrice’s own daughter, Athena, was born prematurely at the hospital in west London and the princess is a patron of Borne.

With the King’s approval, we can expect more of such public engagements by Beatrice and Eugenie, to the surprise of their critics, who worry that they are tainted by the controversies surrounding their parents. The King is, however, a fair and magnanimous man who does not believe that his nieces should suffer because of their parents’ behaviour.

‘It is, perhaps, one of the few things that His Majesty and Andrew agree on,’ a royal source told me. ‘They both love Beatrice and Eugenie and want the best for them. They also agree that the princesses can play an important, helpful role in public life.’

[From The Daily Mail]

What’s weird is that in the old days, Charles absolutely loathed the idea of Bea and Eugenie becoming working royals in any capacity. Charles’s obsession with a “slimmed down monarchy” meant that none of his nieces or nephews would ever “work” for the Firm in any way shape or form. No one expected Andrew to be “un-royaled” so dramatically, but it’s even more unexpected to see Charles’s volte-face on the issue of B&E. To me, this move is less about Andrew and whatever deal he worked out with Charles. It’s more about Charles being desperate for anyone younger than 60 years old, willing to plaster on a smile and do some “royal engagements.” God knows, William and Kate aren’t going to do it.

Okay, so let’s get down to the real question. Money. Is Beatrice doing these royal events for free and out of the goodness of her heart or is she getting paid from the SG each time she does an event. Bc, from what I can tell, a working royal is supposed to mean they get money for the work they do. Or is she an unpaid half-in royal? They’re not addressing money at all so what are we even talking about really. All this talk without bringing up the money part of it seems purposeful.

    • Cate says:

Even if she is not getting paid, doing these events benefit B as her job/income is heavily dependent on her being seen to have “access”…to other RF members, to important people in the UK, etc.

      • jais says:

It definitely benefits her. But calling her a working royal, whether she’s half-in or whatever, seems silly. She’s not getting paid so how is she working for the the firm? it’s semantics, I know. Harry and Meghan did ask to be half-in and not get paid from the SG. But the firm itself has made the working royal part a thing and that does mean being paid to do royal work.

    • Paisley25 says:

I believe she still has her long-time apartment at St James Palace. Have we ever heard the terms of that lease? Maybe playing nice is part of keeping it. And as others have said, she needs to be seen as royal for her business stuff.

  2. Lady Digby says:

Surely royal engagements have to be covered for them to boast at year end of 3000 engagements being carried out? It’s been obvious to EVERYONE since last year that Will and Kate are cutting back not stepping up. Someone young and suitable like his cousins have to cover the work and why not the Yorks if they want to? Time to face facts about recruitment being necessary to cover the existing work load because sofa loving Will and wife ain’t putting in extra time from now on! It’s pathetic that this subject hasn’t been addressed before because people at the top cocked it up a. Allowing Will to be so lazy and b.Driving away Meg and Harry and c. Not allowing cousins to serve years ago.

    • DK says:

I mean, I will never understand what Charles was thinking with all his “slimmed down monarchy” BS anyway – surely the taxpayers don’t want to pay the same amount (even more, in fact, since the BRF got a big raise) to get even less work out of the royal family. (And it’s not like the slimmed down monarchy meant less taxpayer money going to the royals…again, it has meant MORE!)

So yeah, they for sure need more people carrying out royal engagements.

But I also wonder if this isn’t Chuck trying to rouse W&K into doing some work? Leveraging their raging jealousy in the hopes that seeing their cousins getting coverage and praise will get them to do something?

LOL if that’s the plan, of course, because I’m pretty sure nothing but the Sussexes leaving the house will get W&K to do anything.

    • Unblinkered says:

      Fully agree, LadyDigby and DK.

It’s only by keeping on, on this forum, that we can hope The UK Establishment reads and hears – and one day takes action against W and KM. Maybe they already have.

  3. Duch says:

Finally. This answer has been obvious for years.

But I guess only recent events have made it ripe – A’s moving out of society (so their service doesn’t embiggen him in any way); and importantly, the firm realization that the Keens really truly do not want to / like to work. Like Kaiser said, cutting back even further on the little work they used to do.

  4. Blair Warner says:

    Ha ha hahahaha –

“The King is, however, a fair and magnanimous man …”

I needed a laugh this morning.

    • Harla says:

It does appear to be true, Charles is “fair and magnanimous” to just about anyone who isn’t his youngest son, DIL or younger grandchildren.

  5. HuffnPuff says:

How is this different than what the Sussexes asked for? And is Scooter on board with this?

  6. Sam says:

I wonder if this is to protect them from having their titles removed? The working royals argument can be used against HM, without impacting BE.

    • MSS says:

I don’t think that argument will work, considering it’s a well known fact that Meghan and Harry asked for the half in half out option and were told no.

    • jais says:

And that’s the thing though. Who is really calling them working royals. Richard Eden? Nothing official has been said by Charles or William in that regard. And she was made a deputy patron not a royal patron. So I don’t really get this calling her a working royal thing unless it’s just abut making the public think she is when in fact she’s not. If Charles want to come out and officially say she’s a working royal then cool otherwise it’s whatever.

    • Angied says:

Than they would look like the biggest racist and it will really bring in to what Harry said about them. How would it look if they kept the p-dofile daughters titles and got rid of the mixed race family ones. I don’t think they want to go down that route. Considering they out rank the Yorks. That would be a disaster for them.

  7. Blujfly says:

And Eden had nothing to say about whether or not William approves?

I wouldn’t be surprised if William secretly does approve. If Charles dies before Louis is 30, which is inevitable, William will not want his children performign regular public duties.

    • Lady Digby says:

He has no problem about Anne, Edward and Sophie doing bread and butter events as long as there is no WOW factor. He has NO intention of doing anything he doing want to himself. He keep the best stuff for himself eg he should have knighted Sir David not daddy! He wants the front pages to himself but he doesn’t want to work regularly doing basic events.

  8. Bqm says:

Beatrice has been patron since March. She and Eugenie have long supported causes they’re personally linked to. I don’t think they’re becoming working royals. I think the difference is the Firm is pushing the patronages more publicly. And that’s related to the aging of the royals and the fact William and Kate do the bare minimum, if that.

  9. Amy Bee says:

I don’t think there is any move as Eden has suggested. They have been always patrons even though they are non-working royals. I think what this says is both Beatrice and Eugenie will not lose their status and will still enjoy the perks of being a royal. If any question should be how come Beatrice is allowed to be patron of a royal patronage when the Palace said Harry and Meghan could retain theirs because they were working royals?

  10. Paisley25 says:

I laugh every time they bring up the counselors of state thing. They make it sound so critical for the monarchy, but what was the last time they actually used it? Maybe a few times in Elizabeth’s final years and Charles stepped in?

  11. Lianne says:

Careful Bea, at your rate you’ll probably achieve Kate’s yearly average by April and then you’ll really be in the dog house.

  12. JenCF says:

    Ohhhh, I get it.
The girls’ royal stature was part of KC3’s package to get Andrew out of Royal Lodge. Andrew needs to see evidence of this happening, so Bea is now being publicly trotted out as a good faith effort by KC3. Logic would dictate that the girls should be lying low until the dust settles, but Andrew wants proof of the promise kept. It will be interesting to see their schedules after Andrew is out the lodge.

    • Happy Peregrine says:

Brilliant point. But it’s also a point of concern. Because Charles will hate anyone “forcing” him to do certain things or make certain concessions. I wonder if the trap will spring on B&E after Andrew is moved out and hasn’t been seen in public in 6 months.
