Quentin Tarantino is pissed that Rosanna Arquette criticized his use of the n-word

Several days ago, the Times of London published an interview with Rosanna Arquette, all part of her promotion for The Moment (the Charli XCX movie). The Times asked Rosanna about different parts of her career, including her small part in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Regarding Pulp Fiction, Arquette said, “It’s iconic, a great film on a lot of levels. But personally I am over the use of the N-word — I hate it. I cannot stand that he [Tarantino] has been given a hall pass. It’s not art, it’s just racist and creepy.” From there, she segued into speaking about Harvey Weinstein, who produced Pulp Fiction and who sexually harassed her around that time – when she got out of that hotel room before he could assault her, he ruined her career. Basically, Rosanna has every reason to have mixed feelings about Pulp Fiction, that whole experience and any film produced by Weinstein. But Quentin Tarantino got really, really mad about her interview. He wrote a public letter/note to Rosanna:

Dear Rosanna,

I hope the publicity you’re getting from 132 different media outlets writing your name and printing your picture was worth disrespecting me and a film I remember quite clearly you were thrilled to be a part of?

Do you feel this way now?

Very possibly.

But after I gave you a job, and you took the money, to trash it for what I suspect is very cynical reasons, shows a decided lack of class, no less honor.

There is supposed to be an esprit de corps between artistic colleagues.

But it would appear the objective was accomplished.

Congratulations
Q

As I said in my coverage of Rosanna’s interview, it’s not like she’s the first one to ever question or criticize Tarantino’s use of the n-word. Spike Lee was on Tarantino’s ass about it for years, as were many film critics and Black writers and artists. Which makes me wonder… is Tarantino angry because Rosanna is white? Because she’s a white actress and filmmaker who appeared in one of his films and she’s now like “actually, his use of that word is f–king gross?” It does feel like an outsized response to one woman who is merely chiming in on an issue which has been around since the ‘90s. Also: does someone need to be “cynical” to look back on what previous filmmakers got away with and think “actually that was problematic?” That’s part of how art ages and how we, as a society, age and evolve as well. Additionally, I find it especially galling that Tarantino fixed his mouth to throw this hissy fit without even acknowledging Rosanna’s issues with Weinstein, which have also influenced how she looks back on Pulp Fiction.

QT has hurtee feelings. He dished it out to Paul Dano and now is unhappy about an actress criticising his choices in film making? Is only he as a wealthy white man entitled to criticise others? Neither he nor JK Rowling own the actors who starred in their films .

    • Jais says:

Right? He said there’s supposed to be an esprit de corp between artistic colleagues. Um where was that when he trashed Dano and Lillard? Maybe it’s bc he didn’t work with them. But still. Whew, someone’s sensitive.

    • ArtHistorian says:

That is a very immature response from him. How embarrassing that a grown man cannot take some legitimate criticism.

      • bananapanda says:

Something about white men… Aaron Sorkin has the same out-sized response to anyone questioning his female characters or loose interpretation of facts.

QT needs to rein in or stop the use of N-word. I understand it in context of Django but in Pulp Fiction QT himself used it when he played Jim the house husband and in present times that wildly inappropriate (it was back then too).

  2. Boxy Lady says:

I think Quentin is more pissed that Rosanna is a *woman* who is criticizing him more than that she is a white person who is criticizing him.

    • LADY DIGBY says:

Agreed! He is such a sensitive artist who welts under criticism from a “mere” woman! Snort!

    • here2 says:

Ding ding ding!! He drips with misogyny and always has. Can’t stand that a woman publicly expressed a (fairly mild) negative opinion about him, never mind that she said later in the piece that QT wanted her in Pulp Fiction and she appreciates that. If he was confident that he was right in using that language (spoiler, I’m with Rosanna) he wouldn’t feel the need to respond by having that unbecoming hissy-fit in print. It’s very “spoiled toddler” of him.

    • KC2 says:

Yep. Dude can dish it, but can’t take it.

    • Trex says:

Correct. He publicly calls her out in a letter using a degrading (I gave you a job) tone no less. Men like him will always be part of the problem.

  3. Dee(2) says:

He picks and chooses who he wants to be upset with because Denzel Washington has gotten into his ass about it too, and I don’t remember an open letter to him.

I’ve been over Quentin Tarantino since he was on a talk show talking about how he was going to get the bloods and the crips together, and just talk it out and squash everything. Because of course all they need was interjection from him to handle long-standing gang issues.

So I’m just saying, that his entire perspective on a lot of things to do with black people is actually pretty racist, but he’s just one of those people that believe that because they have black friends that they have and understanding and level of comfort with saying and doing certain things, that they really don’t.

    • Drea says:

Good lord, the hubris. This is a man who has done way too much cocaine, and has the personality to show for it.

He’s such a pretentious arrogant a-$, who loves the smell of his own butthole.

    • BeanieBean says:

He’s going to solve the issue between the Bloods & the Crips? How about he have a crack at the Hatfield & McCoys situation? Geez Louise, this guy. 🙄

  4. Jay says:

I for one am shocked -shocked!- to hear that QT isn’t taking criticism well. He seems so even-tempered and receptive to feedback that might allow him to grow beyond his narrow worldview, it’s truly astounding that he would miss this opportunity to acknowledge harm done and talk about what he would do differently compared to 1994.

  5. Jillian says:

Like his movies, Quentin Tarantino has also not aged well. Obnoxious relic

  6. ThatGirlThere says:

He’s such a crybaby. That’s all he is. He really sat down and wrote an open letter to Rosanna but not to the other people/artist who have challenged him on the use of that word. After attacking Paul Dano and Matthew Lillard just for fun, he can’t take legitimate criticism from another artist? Typical spoiled egomaniac. I’ve seen a couple of his films but still haven’t seen Pulp Fiction and now I never plan to.

  7. 1stTimer says:

He gave her a job and she disrespected him? Of course she should be eternally grateful and keep her mouth shut, like a good little girl. #sarcasm
    What an asshole.

  8. Mslove says:

QT has been making the same type of movie for the past 30 years, and they are full of inconsistencies, and I think he’s overrated and a bad actor.

  9. Kateeee says:

Oooooof, those mommy issues surge right to the front when a woman criticizes him (in the mildest and most unnecessarily generous way possible).

  10. CM says:

That guy is a first class AH. 🤮 Not supporting any of his work. I hope the Hollywood community will rally around her.

  11. Amy Bee says:

It’s because she’s white and a woman. Has he ever responded directly to Spike Lee?

    • smcollins says:

He wouldn’t dare because he’s knows what would happen if he did. But singling out a woman he worked with over 30 years ago for a rather mild criticism? Fair game in his world because in his mind he has the upper hand and power. I love his films but that man is, and always has been, a huge asshole with a fragile ego.

  12. Kathalea says:

I don’t understand the hype of this man. Never have, never will. Never liked any of his movies. I just don’t get it

  13. JayBlue says:

Wow, what a sensitive little snowflake he is.

The n word is hugely controversial for a reason, thanks to its violent history, and some dude bro screeching “but it’s art when i say it” isn’t going to change that. Qt needs to get over himself.

  14. Annette says:

He’s a misogynist and a piece of shit. Ask Uma Thurman. I have worked on decentering men in entertainment over the years and I haven’t seen a Tarantino movie since Jackie Brown.

  15. scorpionista says:

    Dude is 100% incel .

  16. Bea says:

Did this man really have to audacity to say there should be “esprit de corps between artistic colleagues” when he just shit all over Paul Dano unprovoked and for no reason ? This man is a lunatic so far up his own ass. Ugh I can’t stand him.

  17. Wednesday Addams says:

He’s as ugly on the inside as he is on the outside.

  18. Lala11_7 says:

    I’m just 😊 that an actress I have ADORED 💚 since 1983’s “Baby It’s You” & a Muse 🎵 to some of my ALL TIME FAVORITE 🎶 GROUPS❣️. Hasn’t opened their mouths & 💔 with their thoughts & actions…like Tarentino has…

You know…I remember hearing “casting couch” whispers about Weinstein et al in the LATE 90s…BEFORE the internet …when I was young & stupid not understanding the true 😱 of that situation because I was SO complicit to a LOT of male toxicity due to my upbringing & environment and I think I’ve seen EVERY Miramax film released in the theaters…and decades later I feel absolutely SICK when I think of the actresses that were in his films & were MAGNIFICENT…then ALL of a sudden disappeared 😭

  19. ChillinginDC says:

    God he’s an incel.

  20. B Overland says:

Agree with all of these comments about the incel, misogynist Tarantino. Good for Rosanna and I’m sure she gives zero F’s about his little note. For the record both Dano and Lillard are exceptionally talented and consistently kill it it in every widely varied role they choose. I will take them over the Oscar baity Timmy, BCoop Leo etc gang any day.

  21. Mcali02 says:

He’s just mad he didn’t have a leg to stand on when he was an ass to Paul Dano and everyone was coming for him and he couldn’t say sh*t. So he’s displacing all that anger on a woman who (like his ex Mira Sorvino) was f-d over by Weistein. Tarantino is a real gem. Thank God he only has one more film to complete before he retires.

  22. Delphine says:

Tarantino needs to get over himself. He only used that word THAT many times in one movie because he wanted to be controversial. It was a way to get people talking about his movie and generate ink. He knew what he was doing. If people don’t like it now he can suck it.

  23. Jan says:

    Lol what a suck.

  24. Eowyn says:

Hoped there would be more posts unequivocally stating that Rosanna Arquette was right and QT was wrong, and he or any white person doesn’t get a pass in the n-word, it’s another fetish of his alongside feet. Racist ass.

  25. jferber says:

Quentin is obviously uncomfortable about women having opinions and speaking out about them. International Women’s Day should be everyday. He needs to STFU about her opinion of him–and she’s right.

  26. jferber says:

However, if he were to take down Trump (and I don’t care how), I’d take it all back and watch every crappy movie he ever made (though I unexpectedly liked his John Travolta movie–forgot the name).
