Tiger Woods was arrested for a DUI in Florida after his fourth car crash

In recent years, the only time I’ve seen or heard about Tiger Woods is when he goes to the US Open to watch tennis. He’s a big tennis fan, and he’s friends with several tennis players, including Rafa Nadal and Serena Williams. He has also been in the gossip columns every so often in the past few years because he’s dating Vanessa Trump, Don Jr’s ex-wife. Oh, and last year, Tiger bizarrely went to the Trump White House for Black History Month and Baby Fists gave him a shiny award. All in all, Tiger makes news these days for anything other than golf. Well, some more terrible news. Tiger was arrested on Friday after he caused yet another car accident while under the influence.

Tiger Woods was arrested and jailed on a charge of driving under the influence after being involved in a two-vehicle crash on Friday afternoon that resulted in his Land Rover rolling onto its side.

When officers reached the scene of the crash on Jupiter Island, Fla., where Woods has a home, the golfer showed “signs of impairment,” Martin County Sheriff John M. Budensiek said at a news conference. A breathalyzer test did not detect any alcohol in his system, but Woods refused a urinalysis. That led to his arrest and his being taken to Martin County Jail, where he had to remain for at least eight hours. Woods was later seen in the passenger seat of a vehicle leaving the jail.

He was charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Budensiek said the crash occurred when Woods, driving a Land Rover, tried to overtake a truck that was hauling a pressure cleaner trailer while headed northbound on South Beach Road. The truck’s driver was attempting to turn left on a two-lane road, saw the Land Rover coming from behind and tried to move off the road, but had nowhere to go. The Land Rover clipped the truck and rolled onto its side.

Budensiek said that Woods climbed out through the passenger’s side of his vehicle, and that neither driver was injured.

“Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment,” Budensiek said. “They did several tests on him. He did explain the injuries and surgeries he had; we did take that into account, but they did do some in-depth roadside tests, and when it was determined, he was taken under arrest and taken to the Martin County Jail.”

Woods, 50, has been involved in four incidents involving automobiles since 2009, causing personal and professional harm. Asked if Woods would receive special treatment in jail, Budensiek said he would make sure Woods was safe.

“We’re the sheriff’s office,” he said. “We know we arrested a high-profile figure. I’m not trying to dramatize it. But it doesn’t matter who you are; if you break the law, we’re going to follow the law. It’s a really easy path to take. As far as being in the jail, we’re going to make sure he’s safe. We’re not going to put him in general population. He’s not going to be with other inmates that could hurt him or try to capitalize on what he did. He’ll pay the price, but he won’t pay the price by being punished in jail.”

[From The NY Times]

In case you’re wondering, Tiger has been to rehab twice, both times over fifteen years ago. His first rehab stint was for sex addiction, his second time was for pill addiction (pain pills and Ambien). My educated guess is that his impairment on Friday was probably not alcohol-related but pill-related. It would make sense given his recent surgeries, including surgery to repair his Achilles eleven months ago and then last fall, his seventh back surgery. The NYT also pointed out that this crash was similar to his 2021 crash, where his car rolled over several times. I think this time, the car’s rollover was just one turn, onto its side. It’s really f–ked up that this keeps happening and they need to take away his driver’s license before he really hurts someone or hurts himself even worse than this.

    So trashy. How elite.

    • Lorelei says:

Somehow I had no idea he was dating a Trump until I just read this post! Trashy doesn’t even begin to cover it.

It makes me crazy when people who can easily afford to hire drivers (also see: Justin Timberlake) drive impaired anyway. It’s so unbelievably stupid and unnecessary. I guess it’s arrogance, especially with people like these two.

  2. Amy Bee says:

How is he not banned from driving? He’s lucky he’s never killed anyone.

  3. Jais says:

Doesn’t he have enough money for a driver???

    • Hypocrisy says:

Of course he does but obviously he has learned his lesson from his past.. if my middle income neighbor could hire a driver after one dui tiger could have a team of them.

    • koko says:

A driver, an Uber, a girlfriend, an employee, a friend….he has the money for all that and more. But a friend, who is in recovery, told me, he never felt like he was unable to drive, like he was impaired. I imagine this is how TW feels too. He has to realize that “luck” is going to run out and he could seriously injure or kill someone. My friend did.

      • CatGotMyTongue says:

That’s the crazy thing. If I had that kind of money I would never drive anywhere ever again, impaired or not!

Lyft/uber aren’t even that expensive. He could afford a whole personal driver! It’s the first thing I would drop money on, after my cat.

  4. Brassy Rebel says:

After the horrible 2021 crash in which he was very badly injured, law enforcement seemed to think that because there was no evidence of alcohol impairment he couldn’t be impaired, I was gobsmacked that the worry everyone had about him was that he would never be able to play golf again. This man needs help and has needed help for a long time, probably since childhood when his dad turned him into a golf prodigy. He’s a great golfer. But he’s a human being with a serious problem which is obviously not being addressed. Does someone have to die?

    • Lorelei says:

Considering the number of car crashes this man seems to get into, it does in fact seem like someone will need to be seriously injured or killed before this asshole’s license is revoked.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

Following the 2021 crash, he wasn’t even ticketed even though he was driving far beyond the speed limit. This is a very rare instance where wealth and fame overrode race.

    • KC2 says:

Probably, and the way odds work it won’t be him. It will be some unfortunate victim in the wrong spot at the wrong time.
I can’t stand this man. The sex addiction, the entitlement, and he’s cheap.

  5. Eliza says:

Needs to stop driving before he hits a carload of kids.

    • liz says:

I think his own kids are still minors. I wonder if his ex-wife has it in their custody agreement that he can’t drive them anymore? After this crash, I would be insisting on it.

      • Day Drinker says:

I read on another website that the Secret Service had banned him from driving Trumps grandchildren with Vanessa and Don jr. Real question, do the ex-daughter in law and grandchildren of the president get Secret Service protection? Another website quoted a “friend” of Tiger’s saying he’s a terrible driver who had a lead foot and by the way, alcohol isn’t his problem it’s the painkillers. Some friend. When I was on narcotic painkillers for my spinal issues I figured out real quick I could barely navigate my apartment that I’ve lived in for 40 years, let alone drive a vehicle. I dragged my ass into to work, stayed until the pain got too bad, came home and took a pill and poured a glass of wine(hence my day drinker moniker) Get over yourself and your ego dude and hire a driver.

      • BeanieBean says:

@Day Drinker: first, I hope your back issues are better! Second, as far as what’s normally the case for Secret Service protection–what’s happening now isn’t normal. Ordinarily, the adult children of the president & vice-president don’t get SS protection, and once the kids hit 18 that’s it. But as I said, these are not normal times.

    • SIde Eye says:

Yes. He gets more and more reckless. The last time he was speeding this time he tried to overtake a truck and clipped it. He’s dangerous and it needs to stop. He seems to have zero regard for human life.

  6. Lady Rae says:

He really does seem to have deep seated problems. Has there ever been and article in depth or documentary that’s explored any of this with him being a golf Prodigy and forced to play from the age of two even though he clearly had talent and loved it it just seems like there’s something very broken about him.

    • Happy Camper says:

I’m not aware of a documentary, but there have been at least three biographies focusing on his early life, career, and recent struggles so there is certainly enough content out there to make a documentary about him. His mother passed away last year and I wonder if that might mean people are willing to talk more openly because they can’t embarrass his parents anymore.

      • Lady Rae says:

Maybe the full story of the toll of his childhood could be told in a sensitive way even if it’s just to help humanize and understand him as he’s so guarded but also still held up which I don’t think does him any good or anyone else. He clearly needs help and if he doesn’t want to seek it for himself the public needs protecting from him.

    • NikkiK says:

He didn’t particularly like golf. That was all his daddy. Watch the HBO Documentary on him, it is fascinating. Tiger is a man with daddy issues, a lot of demons, and he refuses to do anything about it. He is also clearly an addict and probably a heavy drinker, he shouldn’t look that rough at 50. This accident doesn’t appear to be intentional, but the last one that almost cost him his leg was most likely a suicide attempt – data showed that he never let up off the accelerator as he drove off the cliff – he was going like 95 the whole time. Had he been passed out even, his foot would not have maintained that pressure on the accelerator.

Thankfully his ex-wife has seemingly done an amazing job with their kids; as they seem happy, normal, and well-adjusted. And she looks fabulous to be pushing 50 with five kids!!

      • Lady Rae says:

I saw something about that years ago where there was a clip about his parents making him break up with his high school girlfriend because they thought she was a distraction from golf. Yikes! Although I’ve heard of parents that have done things like this, like say that they think their child is too young to have a boyfriend or girlfriend and just generally interfering etc. I don’t know what that would do to you emotionally though.

  7. Noo says:

New golf stars have taken his place and the level of obsession has waned. However Tiger’s behaviour and recurring lack of accountability has been enabled by millions of rich male golf fans. Those Republican golf bros have had massive woodies for the guy watching his every move. The Tiger stans have had a part in this.

Interesting to see some different messages coming from golf media and a former PGA player after this crash. Calling for different coverage due to this clear pattern of behavior and actual accountability for Tiger.

So #47 will surely be tweeting in all caps shortly.

  8. HillaryIsAlwaysRight says:

If he wasn’t a celebrity, he’d have his license taken away by now.

  9. Happy Camper says:

Tiger needs to stop driving or he is going to kill someone (and possibly die himself).

He has enough money to be chauffeured around anywhere he needs to go, so maybe he should just have a live-in chauffeur as a harm reduction strategy. That way the safety of the community isn’t dependent on his sobriety.

  10. Caitlin says:

Vanessa Trump really went from the frying pan into the fire when she moved on to this guy from Don Jr. Yikes.

  11. Jayna says:

He wasn’t drinking. He blew all zeros on the Breathalyzer. In 2017, he was found asleep in his car with the engine on in, in the road. He was found to have Ambien, anti-anxiety medication, Vicodin, THC, and Quaaludes in his system. He has a real pill problem, not just overuse of Vicodin for his severe back pain.

  12. Day Drinker says:

@Beanie Bean – Thanks for your kind thoughts. At the moment doing okay, there’s nothing surgically that can be done, just a laundry list of things that most people unknowingly have wrong until something triggers it. Going on 3 years next month, I was 66 at the time. Just pain management and PT. Setback a few months ago, same routine. One wrong twist or turn and back to it again. Blessedly my left leg is the weaker one so I can drive. I thought it was odd that SS could prevent someone from driving people in their cars. But as you said these are not normal times. I knew it was going to be bad when the orange anus got “elected” but I couldn’t imagine it would be this horrible. I watch way too much news now that I’m retired and I went and looked to make sure I have my birth certificate and original social security card, which I do. I changed back to my maiden name after my last divorce so I’m good, too many others aren’t in the same position. Gonna be a long three years.

  13. Kim says:

Lord not this dumb POS again. Who rolls their car once in their lifetime, let alone TWICE?? Dude, stop driving, you are a menace.
Idolized his entire adult life because of golf – although as someone pointed out above he’s no longer a contender due to injuries and age. I’m sure that’s hard for him to reconcile since he apparently has not cultivated any other kind of life besides golf. Nevertheless he needs to get his act together. Given that he’s looking more and more like his terrible father, and acting like him too, I doubt that will happen. I side-eye every woman who gets involved with him (looking at you Lindsay Vonn) and now of course he’s with a Trump adjacent which just increases his unlikeability by 1,000%
