Scarlett Johansson in black Saint Laurent at the Tonys: cheap-looking or cute?

Here are some more photos from last night’s Tony Awards! You can read some coverage of who won what and how here at People Mag, and here’s a full list of the winners. We’re just doing the fashion for the most part because I don’t think anyone around here watched it. So, here is Scarlett Johansson last night. You may remember, ScarJo has already WON a Tony. She won a few years ago when she was doing that Arthur Miller revival. She also did a revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof this year, although I heard it was not great and the ticket sales were meh. ScarJo wore this Saint Laurent mini-dress/tuxedo thing. I don’t hate the idea of it, but the execution is… cheap-looking. I think it’s the lace thing on the top, with the ruffle. It looks like ScarJo paired a really great cropped tuxedo jacket with a cheap mall dress. Plus, that lipstick shade sucks on her.

I think I’m becoming a major Zachary Quinto fan. He was one of the best parts of Star Trek Into Darkness, and that man can wear the hell out of suit and tuxedo. Quinto’s tux last night was Dior Homme. Perfection.

I have to say, Jake Gyllenhaal looks really good in his midnight-blue tux. He needs to ease up on the “I’m smoldering” squint though.

And finally, here’s Sigourney Weaver in a dress that I’m absolutely positive I’ve seen on her before. Whatever, she’s awesome. She can wear repeats if she wants.

Who should play the young Hillary Rodham Clinton: Carey Mulligan, ScarJo…?

You know what’s a really underrated film? Primary Colors! Emma Thompson played a Hillary Clinton-like political wife and John Travolta played a version of Bill Clinton. Billy Bob Thornton was sort-of a budget James Carville, and on and on. Kathy Bates is fantastic in that movie too, and Emma was particularly wonderful as a budget Hillary. Anyway, Hollywood is back in love with Hillary Clinton (after largely scorning her during the 2008 primaries), and there’s a planned Hillary Clinton bio-pic in the works. The film will focus on her early years, as Hillary Rodham, and when she first met Bill Clinton. So who should play the young Hillary? Sources tell THR that Carey Mulligan is the leading contender!

Carey Mulligan has emerged as the front-runner to play Hillary Rodham Clinton in Rodham, Temple Hill and The Arlook Group’s biopic of the former first lady, New York senator and secretary of state.

The Great Gatsby actress is the producers’ top choice to play Clinton during the formative years of her storied career in public service, according to several sources. Several American actresses’ names have been bandied about to take on the widely admired but often polarizing figure, including Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone. Ironically, the British actress, who was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her starring role in An Education, has never been mentioned.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the actress will have a sit-down with director James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now), but sources say both sides are eager for it to work. However, insiders close to the production caution that no decision has been made and that others actresses are still in the mix.

The indie drama portrays Rodham as a young lawyer on the committee involved in President Richard Nixon’s impeachment, and her juggling a diverging career path with her unresolved feelings for future president Bill Clinton.

Young Il Kim wrote the script, which was on the 2012 Black List.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

Carey Mulligan is a fine actress, and I have no doubt that she can do an American accent. But! Hillary’s particular cadences and her intellectual/strident vibe? I’m not so sure. Of course, I don’t believe Scarlett Johansson has any place on this list either. Jessica Chastain would be an interesting choice… I get the feeling that with the right wig, Jessica could play just about anyone. As for Emma Stone… is she too young to play Hillary at this point in Hillary’s life? But Emma would nail the voice, I think. As would Chastain. So who should they pick?! And who should be cast as the young Bubba? Goodness. You know Bubba was quite gingery before he became a silver fox. Something to think about.

….Oooo, what about Anne Hathaway?!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the ‘Don Jon’ trailer: beefy, hot & surprisingly sweet?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

If recent pop-cultural history has shown anything at all, it’s that ladies love Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Tommy Solomon has not only grown up good but also appears so grateful and enthusiastic about his success and even looks good while pumping gas. Now JGL appears in a new feature film, Don Jon (formerly titled Don Jon’s Addictions), that functions as his writing and directing debut. Last year, Kaiser covered some meathead set photos where Joe looked a little too orange for my liking. Honestly, he looked like the ultimate “Jersey Shore” reject, which is saying something considering that I willingly watched every episode of that dumb show.

But now there’s a trailer for the Don Jon movie, which was a hit at Sundance and was immediately picked up for global distribution, and the trailer is unavoidably charismatic. Kaiser, CB, and myself were all gushing over how surprisingly sweet this trailer appears. The words “cute” and “adorable” came to pass more than once. The trailer itself is a wee bit NSFW, but watch it, and you’ll probably like it too:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

See, this movie co-stars Tony Danza JGL’s dad! Julianne Moore is in there too. Essentially, this is a very sweert rom-com with a pr0ny twist. That is, the titular Don Jon is obsessed with (as the trailer suggests) a few things, which include pr0n. Then he falls in love with Scarlett Johansson’s character, who adores cheesy romantic comedies just like Don Jon harbors a weakness for pr0n.

ScarJo does an excellent Joisey accent here (seriously, that’s some very effective gum smacking) and finally embraces her own sexuality (which she has steadfastly buried under wraps for the past few years) as an actress even though her character honestly doesn’t understand why Don Jon continues to watch his pr0n even though he has her. The premise sounds awful, I know, but the trailer says otherwise. The movie also stars Channing Tatum and Anne Hathaway in a movie-within-a-movie. It’s going to be a total sleeper and an unexpectedly great date movie, I just know it.

Chris Evans: ‘I’m such a little bitch. I’m such a f***ing whiny bitch, man’

Chris Evans

In all the buzz over The Iceman and its limited release last weekend, most of the fuss has been over the triumphant return of 1990s goddess Winona Ryder. Yet Chris Evans has been lurking in the background and just waiting to be noticed — in the movie, he plays a hitman nicknamed “Mr. Softee” and dances to Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” in a gay nightclub — which is strange because Chris always gives a good interview. Sure, he’s handsome and has a nice body, but I actually find him pretty bland in a physical sense and merely look forward to witnessing the weird, rambling things that come out of his mouth. Like when he spills his guts about liking Boston girls who will sh-t on him (not literally), or girls with big asses, well, that’s pretty endearing.

Now Collider has released a discussion with Chris that took place during last fall’s TIFF where The Iceman premiered. As always, Chris is transmitting his usual loveable freak-out vibes and treats this interview like his own personal therapy session. So get ready to hear more about how Chris agonized over that multi-picture deal with Marvel (he eventually signed on for 6 films) and how he can’t stop second-guessing himself. At least he admits that he’s “a whiny bitch” even if we probably wouldn’t put up with this from most actors:

Chris Evans

Yay, more neuroses! “It’s so funny how it evolved. That was part of the whole…when the Captain America stuff came around you kind of take a little bit of a gut check. When you first get to L.A. you are so excited to be there and there is this competitive fire. There is this desire to get to a certain place, but it is all brand new and there is no downside. You really don’t understand anything. So you kind of want to fight and get there. Then as you kind of continue and you make movies and you realize…you start to see some of the pros and cons of the situation. Then you think, ‘Well, maybe what I wanted isn’t exactly what I wanted? Maybe I kind of want to find…’ I think that in the beginning you think, ‘I want to be the biggest movie star in the world.’ And then with the more movies you make you are like, ‘I don’t know if I want to be that anymore. I think what I am looking for is something different.’ I like acting but a lot of times, stardom comes with a lot of strings attached. Then you look at other careers and there are just other careers out there and you look at someone like a Sam Rockwell or someone like that. He has done so many great movies, he has so much respect from his peers, he is a fantastic actor, but I am sure that he can walk down the street without any bother. That is when you start to think, ‘God, maybe there is a happy medium.’ I don’t even know what the question was anymore.”

On scoring the Iceman role: “I got this movie because of [Cap]. If I hadn’t done that…you know, James Franco had this role and he fell out. When he fell out…I know Ariel [Vromen] as a friend but he called and basically said, ‘Listen…’ I know how independent films work. They obviously crunched the numbers and putting me in the role worked for the numbers. I mean foreign sales, or whatever you want to call it. That would not have happened without Captain America and that would not have happened without The Avengers. So I owe a lot to that. And it is nice to have your work seen. It really is.”

Hoping his Marvel fans will follow him to indies: “Yeah. See, I guess you know what it comes to down to? I’m such a little bitch. I don’t know what my issue is. I really am. I’m such a f***ing whiny bitch, man. Do I even want to…see, this is the issue. I wish my agent was here because we have had this conversation a lot lately. What is the goal? Is my goal to be a giant movie star? You start to realize, or at least I have in the past couple of years, that is not my goal. It is a very strange thing to realize. It is a very strange thing because when I moved to L.A. at 18, that was the goal. The goal was to get to a point in your career where you can make the movies that you want to make, do what you want to do, and have access and freedom. You want to climb the ladder. Even just the competitor in you wants to earn it. But then these things start happening.”

He controls his Twitter account: “Nobody helps me. It is just me. But when I first got on it I was like, ‘This is great!’ and for the first month I was like ‘Tweet! Tweet! Tweet!’ I haven’t tweeted in like a month and a half or something. I don’t know.”

On working with Michael Shannon: “He is just fantastic. He is so committed. You get him off set and he is a happy guy and he is a cupcake. He is the nicest guy on the planet. He is joking, laughing, having a bottle of wine, and having a good time. But then on set the guy has a focus and a commitment and a dedication. That type of intensity…it breeds allegiance. When you are around a guy who is so in the zone it is infectious. His acting style is so grounded. With this character….my character is pretty out there. So you try different levels, you know what I mean? You might try the first take here, the next take here, and the next take here. As you rise up, Michael stays steady and almost acts as an anchor. You try things kind of further and further off the wall and you kind of feed off of him, and it brings it back down to a mutual place or a realistic place. It is like playing basketball with Michael Jordan — he is just going to make you better.”

On moving from The Avengers to Cap 2: “Well, it is a much bigger commitment. The good thing is that we did it once. Gearing up for Captain 2 you think, ‘Alright, there was obviously a difference in the workload from Captain America to The Avengers. And you have to get back in the mindset. You have to remember ‘Alright, this is on you, man. You have to take this seriously.’ The fact that The Avengers did so well….you have an obligation. There is a serious obligation to fans who are expecting a great movie. A lot of that starts with making sure that you are physically ready to play the role and look the role. So a lot of that is in my head.”

[From Collider]

It’s pretty easy to visualize Chris while he’s freaking out and rambling like a paranoid mad man, isn’t it? The funny thing is that so many people find Chris endearing for his quirks and propensity to freak out about the good things in life, but he really is easy to compare to Kristen Stewart as far as his inability to cope goes. They’re both so twitchy, and he and Kristen both curse like sailors with well-padded wallets. The difference is that with Chris, these affectaions really do seem authentic. Chris also appears to be genuinely grateful for his unexpected (to him) success, and it doesn’t seem like he’s faking a persona.

Here are some photos of Chris kicking some dude’s ass on the set of Captain America: The Winter Solider. Look, there’s Scarlett Johansson’s butt stunt double too!

Scarlett Johansson: ‘I don’t like jealous behavior, it’s really unattractive’

Scarlett Johansson covers the May issue of Marie Claire. I’m okay with the photo shoot – she looks pretty, they didn’t Photoshop her to a crazy degree, and her hair is a decent shade these days. ScarJo is currently on Broadway, playing Maggie the Cat on Cat On a Hot Tin Roof. She has plans (which she discusses with Marie Claire) to adapt and direct Truman Capote’s debut novel Summer Crossing. And of course, Scarlett is a major celebrity so I guess that’s why she’s on the cover of Marie Claire? Because she doesn’t have any films coming out any time soon. Weird. In her interview, ScarJo talks a little bit about everything, including her Frenchman boyfriend, and if you’d like to hear what Woody Allen and Chris Evans have to say about her, you can read the first part of her interview here. Some highlights:

How she spends her downtime: “I’ve been obsessed with RuPaul’s Drag Race. I love the makeup, I love the hair, I love the looks. That’s been my escape.”

On social media: “All of it drives me crazy. I don’t understand this need to ‘share.’ We almost exploit ourselves in order to feel seen.”

If she ran the world: “I would demand investment in finding and using renewable resources. Then I was thinking about other things, like cab stealing. I always say, ‘You want it that bad, go ahead.’ And they’re usually like, ‘F–k you!’”

On her divorce from Ryan Reynolds in 2010: “Well, it wasn’t that long ago. But I think I’ve had a fair amount of time to process the experience and be able to move forward. I continue to get to know myself better as I get older, and that helps me in my relationships.”

On something a man can’t do around her: “I don’t like jealous behavior. I don’t mind an occasional check-in, but when somebody is passive-aggressively jealous, it’s really unattractive because it shows a sort of insecurity that is…Oh, controlling behavior is awful. Nobody’s going to say they love that.”

Her boyfriend, 30-year-old French creative agency manager Romain Dauriac, who she brought to a party: “But we like to include everyone in a good party. That night was super-fun. I’ve never been the person who sits in the corner, orders bottle service, and judges everybody. The next day my boyfriend and I were saying, ‘We were the best dancers in the whole world last night!’” She clarifies both were “completely delusional” to think that way: “I’m sure we were absolutely, like, ridiculous together.”

[From Marie Claire]

Huh. Were those comments about “jealous behavior” particularly pointed? My first thought was… Ryan Reynolds. Some people think he’s a genuinely nice guy – there are stories to support that. But some people think he was (or is) a piece of work, darker than you’d expect, jealous and moody – there are stories to support that version too. Of course, God knows, Scarlett could just be talking about Sean Penn. Ha.

Scarlett Johansson wore a pear-shaped diamond, is she engaged to her boyfriend?

Go ahead and skip over to The Daily Mail to see the relevant photos – they’re pics of Scarlett Johansson and her boyfriend of some-odd 3 or 4 months, Romain Dauriac, walking around NYC. If you’re particularly eagle-eyed, you’ll notice that ScarJo is wearing a ring in the presence of a man, which totally means ENGAGED!! Or so the rumor-mongers would have us believe!

Her ex husband Ryan Reynolds has already moved on with new wife Blake Lively, and now Scarlett Johansson appears to be following suit with her French beau. The 28-year-old looked nothing like the blonde bombshell we know her to be as she wandered through New York’s East Village with her French journalist boyfriend, Romain Dauriac, but she was sporting something glamorous… a giant pear-cut diamond ring.

Johansson scraped her blonde hair back into a tight ponytail and slipped into black jeans, a black puffa jacket and some heavy-duty black and brown boots which almost detracted from the flashy rock (worn on her engagement finger).

Her 30-year-old boyfriend looked a little more chic – cliche alert – in a bright green jacket, beanie hat, brogues and fashionable oxblood socks. The duo headed to a cash machine before picking up some coffee and making their way to a tattoo parlour.

She’s already amassed a fairly extensive collection of body art, and Scarlett would certainly be the type to mark an engagement with a new permanent mark. Last year she had a horseshoe Inscribed with the phrase Lucky You inked onto her ribcage.

[From The Mail]

God, I really hope ScarJo isn’t that stupid. I mean, I get it. She was so young when she met Ryan Reynolds, and she was still very young when they got married. Maybe she messed up a good thing, or maybe she was a free spirit still finding herself, unwilling to be put in the “Ryan’s Wife” Box. Whatever happened, the marriage ended and then he moved on really, really quickly with someone who seems better suited for him. We all want to be the better woman, and we can all say “she’s fine, she should just sow her wild oats, have some fun.” But there is still the urge to compete, and I worry that Scarlett will fall into the trap of thinking she needs to be settled down too, just because Ryan is.

But mostly, I want her to stop dating douches. I don’t know if this Romain guy is a douche, but I know for sure that Sean Penn is a douche, and I got some major douche vibes from ScarJo’s “most beautiful ad man in New York” boyfriend too. So… she has a type: douches. And that means she shouldn’t be getting remarried any time soon.

….Oh, here we go. ScarJo’s rep told E! News that she’s not engaged. Good.

Also: here’s an image from ScarJo’s latest ad campaign for Dolce & Gabbana’s Desire.

Scarlett Johansson admits she auditioned for Anne Hathaway’s role in ‘Les Mis’

It’s been so long and this attribution might be convoluted or downright false, but I believe it was Gwyneth Paltrow (??) who once gave this piece of advice (and I’m paraphrasing): “Never tell who you slept with or what films you passed on.” You know I’m paraphrasing because Goopy would never end a sentence with a preposition. But the advice is solid, I think – don’t kiss & tell and don’t discuss which films you didn’t want to do. But is it okay for an actress to discuss what films she auditioned for but didn’t get? Hmm… What Would Goop Do? (WWGD?)

That’s the situation right now with Scarlett Johansson. ScarJo is on Broadway (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof revival) and she’s doing some interviews to get people interested. So she told a little story about how she auditioned for Les Miserables…. The Fantine role.

She dreamed a dream, but it never came true. Scarlett Johansson’s wish of starring in Les Miserables was killed when she became sick with laryngitis. In a interview with Broadway.com, the 28-year-old actress reveals she auditioned for the role of Fantine in the Oscar-nominated film, but lost to Anne Hathaway.

“I sang my little heart out,” the 28-year-old Avengers star said of her audition, but unfortunately she wasn’t at her best.

“I auditioned with laryngitis,” she explained. “I did everything I could to, like, not have laryngitis.”

But looking back at it, Johansson says the right woman won the part.

“I think, looking at the film now, there’s no possible way I ever could have topped that performance,” she admitted. (Jessica Biel, Amy Adams, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet and Rebecca Hall were also considered for the role.) “It was perfect and I think fateful and meant to be.”

And despite not getting the job, Johansson said her audition “brought back so many memories” from trying out for the part of young Cosette when she was a child. “It was fun for me to revisit that,” Johansson explained.

Hathaway, 30, has been nominated for a 2013 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role, and has already won a Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA Award.

[From Us Weekly]

Hahahhahahahaha Jessica Biel auditioned. Haha. Yes, we live in a world where Jessica Biel thought she could totally do Fantine in Les Miserables. We live in a world where Jessica Biel thinks she’s in the same league as Hathaway, Winslet, Adams and even ScarJo. Out of that group, I think Amy Adams would have done a hell of a job, and Amy has a lovely singing voice too. But I’m glad Annie got the part, because she’s brought me such joy this awards season. Seriously. Now, was it rude for Scarlett to basically say “I auditioned and I didn’t get the part because I had laryngitis, but if I had been healthy I totally would have gotten it”? Well, I doubt Annie will send roses to the theater, you know? And just think… we could be rolling our eyes through ScarJo’s Oscar campaign right now. Hahaha. Or Jessica Biel’s!!!!

Scarlett Johansson in D&G at the opening night of her Broadway show: cute?

I’m not sure who will be interested in this, but I just liked the photos and I was glad we had access to them. Last night, Scarlett Johansson was the opening night star of the Broadway revival of Cat On a Hot Tin Roof (which, incidentally, is one of my least favorite Tennessee Williams’ plays). I’m including photos of ScarJo on stage (in that negligee) and at the opening night after-party – those are the pics of ScarJo in black Dolce & Gabbana. I’m also including photos of Benjamin Walker – he plays Brick, and in real life he’s Meryl Streep’s son-in-law. Also pictured: Ciarán Hinds, who plays Big Daddy.

ScarJo playing Maggie the Cat could be a major disaster – Maggie is considered one of the most sensual and hot-blooded of Williams’ heroines, the role always ripe for a bombshell. ScarJo is a bombshell, for sure. But does she have the acting chops to pull off the role? According to the critics, she does. Ben Brantley of the New York Times has praised the hell out of her performance – go here to see. It looks like ScarJo’s first Tony-Award-winning Broadway role a few years ago wasn’t a fluke! Scarlett is now a big-time theater actress. How does that make you feel?

PS… It just occurred to me that ScarJo is probably doing a Southern accent. If anyone goes to see the play, please tell me how her accent work was. One of my biggest pet peeves is “actors doing terrible Southern accents.”

Scarlett Johansson: marriage ‘isn’t important. I’m not having kids any time soon’

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson covers the February issue of Elle UK to promote her role as Janet Leigh in Hitchcock. Exactly what is going on with her hair on this cover? Obviously, I’m a fan of the bedhead look, but it’s got no place on an otherwise sleek cover filled with neutral colors and fug, peep-toed booties. This look is neck-to-toe Victoria Beckham, and it’s nice to see that Vicky is now actively marketing her clothing to the greater-than-size-0 market. Other than the out-of-place hair, the editorial is pretty gorgeous and flattering to ScarJo’s figure. I really do like this blue and white satin dress with a bit of sexy thigh flashing through an asymmetrical sheer panel. The interview isn’t bad either, and here are some excerpts:

Scarlett Johansson

On turning 30 soon: “I feel like I’ve been transitioning from young woman into womanhood for a very long time. Now as I approach 30, with the last few years behind me, I feel like growing pains are behind me. It’s just nice to feel happy.”

About the phone hacking of her nude pics: “It was a crazy time. I had some problems in my family and publicly, my relationship — all that stuff. It was like ‘Oh man what next?’ But life has ebbs and flows, don’t you think? Things are more manageable now, but I’m sure something will crumble. I keep it together. I am relatively composed but I can also lose my s***. I’m pretty controlled, and probably controlling too, for better or worse. I’m working on it.”

She’s not looking to get married again: “I got married when I was young and it was incredibly romantic and I liked being married, actually. But it is different. It’s hard to put into words. To me, being in a functioning relationship doesn’t mean you have to be married. I never think about marriage. Is that weird? The only time I ever think about it is when people ask me. ‘Would I get married again?’ It’s really not important to me. It has no relevance to me right now. I’m not having kids any time soon, I’m in a nice relationship, I’m working a lot and, like I said, it’s not important to me.”

On dating outside of the acting pool: “I think there are challenges whether that person’s in your profession or not. It’s nice that [fellow actors] can relate, and you have a shorthand when you’re talking about work, but that can also be monotonous. For me, most importantly, I look for a partner who is creative. I like people that have a colourful way of looking at things, that are inspiring and like art, music and film’.”

On her unwitting “sexy” image: “I think any woman who is curvy and wears a gown to an event is, like, super-sexualised. I mean, at the time I was 18, 19. I was young. I’ve always been curvy. It runs in the family. Throw on an evening frock and it’s like all of a sudden you have boobs and everyone is like: ‘bombshell!’ Instantly it was: ‘The new Marilyn’.”

[From Elle UK]

Okay, I can appreciate that Scarlett is still really tired of being considered a sex symbol, but there’s no way she can claim to have not channelled Marilyn Monroe in a recent Dolce & Gabbana advertising campaign. Although I guess she may have had no input in her styling for those shots, but I still think Scarlett must have at least been flattered by the comparisons during her earlier career. Now she’s wary of anyone even noticing that she has boobs.

As for Scarlett’s comments about marriage and how she’s not about to go there again (at least not anytime soon) as well as her thoughts on having kids … well, I guess we really now know what happened to her and Ryan Reynolds, right? He was probably disappointed that she didn’t want to give up her career and start having babies right away, and I guess they (like so many other couples) just didn’t know each other well enough before getting married. Hopefully, Blake Lively will have better luck in the long run.

Celebrity hacker who leaked Johansson, Aguilera & Alba photos gets 10 years

A celebrity phone hacker, known for leaking intimate photos of Scarlett Johansson, Christina Aguilera, Miley Cyrus and Jessica Alba among others, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Jacksonville, Florida resident Christopher Chaney, 35, plead guilty in LA Federal Court to nine counts of computer hacking and wiretapping. He gained access to over 50 celebrity e-mail accounts using known information about them from public sources. After he got into one account he would mine it for additional email addresses to break into. He also cyber-stalked non-celebrity women he personally knew, sometimes for years, and set it up so their intimate photos would be leaked to their family members. It all sounds awful, creepy and very invasive and his victims agree.

A federal judge on Monday sentenced a man who hacked into the personal online accounts of Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis and other women to 10 years in prison.

U.S. District Judge S. James Otero sentenced Christopher Chaney in Los Angeles after hearing from a tearful Johansson in a videotaped statement..

The biggest spectacle in the case was the revelation that nude photos taken by Johansson herself and meant for her then-husband Ryan Reynolds were placed on the Internet.

Chaney, 35, of Jacksonville, Fla., pleaded guilty to counts that included wiretapping and unauthorized access to a computer.

Chaney also targeted two women he knew, sending nude pictures of one former co-worker to her father.

The women, who both knew Chaney, said their lives have been irreparably damaged by his actions. One has anxiety and panic attacks; the other is depressed and paranoid. Both say Chaney was calculated, cruel and creepy.

Their accounts as cybervictims serve as a cautionary tale for those, even major celebrities, who snap personal, and sometimes revealing photos.

Christina Aguilera said in a statement issued days before the sentencing that although she knows that she’s often in the limelight, Chaney took from her some of the private moments she shares with friends.

“That feeling of security can never be given back and there is no compensation that can restore the feeling one has from such a large invasion of privacy,” Aguilera said.

Prosecutors said Chaney illegally accessed the email accounts of more than 50 people in the entertainment industry between November 2010 and October 2011. Aguilera, Kunis and Johansson agreed to have their identities made public with the hopes that the exposure about the case would provide awareness about online intrusion.

Some of Aguilera’s photos appeared online after Chaney sent an email from the account of her stylist, Simone Harouche, to Aguilera asking the singer for scantily clad photographs, prosecutors said.

Chaney was arrested in October 2011 as part of a yearlong investigation of celebrity hacking that authorities dubbed “Operation Hackerazzi.” Chaney’s computer hard drive contained numerous private celebrity photos and a document that compiled their extensive personal data, according to a search warrant.

[From NY Daily News]

I feel for the victims, especially the everyday women who were unfortunate enough to get targeted by this guy. What I want to know is whose nude photos were leaked by this creep, and who leaked their own. Like was Blake Lively his target, or did someone else release her photos? I know that Vanessa Hudgen’s pictures pre-date this. Also, the government wants to send a message to would-be email hackers that this type of hacking won’t be tolerated and will come with stiff penalties.

Technically speaking, Yahoo! email account used to be easier to crack than Gmail or Hotmail I believe. Like Yahoo! had ridiculously easy security reset questions that could be guessed with known information about a person. They weren’t secure at all. I think that they’ve revamped their security measures in the past couple of years though, following some high profile hacking cases.
