Gary Coleman & wife Shannon Price on “Divorce Court”

I’m pretty sure that there are few better ways to save a marriage than television. And nothing is more likely to salvage your precious relationship than going on some reality TV show… except perhaps going on a court TV show. And since that’s clearly the best route (and makes a lot more sense than marriage counseling) that’s the way that prestigious star Gary Coleman, 40, and wife Shannon Price, 22, decided to go.

The pair showed up for Divorce Court with Judge Lynn Toler, where they proudly claim that they have a dramatic and stormy relationship. And I say proudly because they can never stop talking about it. As fiery and temperamental as Coleman appears to be, Price appears dumb as a box of rocks, and more like a teenager than a 22-year-old.

She tells the story of being frustrated with Coleman’s lack of support when she got into a disagreement with a friend who claimed to know when the world was going to end. Yes, that story really was worth bitching about on national television. Apparently Coleman tried to pacify Price and said the guy had the right to his end-of-the-world opinions, and that pissed her off. But really, what marriage hasn’t suffered from this exact same fight?

Apparently the two often fight because Shannon wants kids, and Gary hates them. You’d think that would have come up before the two walked down the aisle together, but apparently not so much. Shannon also says that Gary has a bad temper, and says that “If he doesn’t get his way, he throws a temper tantrum like a five-year-old.” I love that she has the nerve to compare little Gary Coleman to a child not just to his face, but on national television. Both parties admit that when he’s pissed, Gary bangs his head against the wall. And he gets so upset that he can’t even breathe. Sounds like the cornerstone of a loving relationship if you ask me.

Apparently they also fight until three in the morning, because “We’re night people. Sleep all day, up all night,” according to Price. She also dislikes that Gary doesn’t want to have any friends or a social life, and says his general negativity is bringing her down. And Judge Toler gives them some great advice.

While I’m not entirely sure it serves a purpose, Judge Toler makes Gary Coleman list all the things that he thinks are wrong about him. He mentions not only his temper but also says he has low self-esteem and doesn’t feel that he’s been “very successful in life.” He also says he doesn’t feel financial secure and feels like he’s wasting Shannon’s time.

It seems pretty clear that Coleman and Price aren’t on Divorce Court to divorce so much as to get some cheap dime store counseling. And milk the novelty of their relationship for as long as they possibly can. And frankly, given how little work Gary Coleman sees these days, I can’t really blame him. Tomorrow they’ll be on again, and we’ll get to find out if they’ve actually had sex yet. My money is still on… no. Actually it’s more that I hope they haven’t, because I want to keep unsettling images out of my head.

Jack Nicholson is looking for one last romance

At least one of these girls is Jack Nicholson’s daughter. Photo from March, 2008 thanks to Splash
I think everyone has had a relationship with a confirmed bachelor, the one who will never, ever get married, but still manages to string you along for a year before moving onto his next girlfriend, despite how sure you were you could change him. It’s why the Mr. Big character in Sex and the City has such appeal. But while Big and Carrie may wind up together (no, I haven’t seen the film, that’s just what I think will happen), in real life usually the guy just keeps on with his bachelor ways.

Case in point: Jack Nicholson is now 71, and still looking for a girlfriend.

Standing in the shower before the Tokyo premiere of his movie “The Bucket List,” Jack Nicholson contemplated his own “bucket list” of last great goals, the three-time Oscar winner said on Wednesday.

Easing tensions between the West and Islam would be a political goal, the actor said, but it was having “one last big love” that topped his list.

“Many of my friends, my own contemporaries, have said in their life that they would like one last big romance to occur, so that would be on my list also,” the 71-year-old performer said.

“I thought in the shower today (that) it’d been many political things I’d like, but of course I’m not in control of that.”

Reuters

Jack has been married once, and has five kids, but I think 40 years of dating (he divorced his only wife in 1968) puts him in the bachelor category. He doesn’t say that he’s looking for a wife, but just romance. I assume that’s the kind of line he feeds the ladies. All 2,000 of them he claims to have bedded.

Is this the future for Hollywood’s other confirmed bachelors? Will we see George Clooney in 30 years, with a big paunch and still looking for a piece of ass?

Ashlee Simpson talks about her eating disorder

Ashlee Simpson’s new album is not selling well, she’s even been outsold by New Zealand’s fourth most popular comedy folk duo, despite big media coverage of her engagement and pregnancy. The pregnancy that I don’t believe exists, despite Ashlee’s desperate attempts to keep the phantom baby alive.

So, what’s a girl to do when the sales are down and your other tactics have failed? Talk about your eating disorder.

She recalls, “When I went to ballet school, I was around a lot of girls with eating disorders, and I actually had a minor one myself.

“It was about six months of not eating too much at all. I was 11 and five foot, two inches and about 70 pounds. My parents stepped in and made me eat.”

Contact Music

I wouldn’t really call weighing 70 pounds a ‘minor’ eating disorder, even if you are only 5’2” and eleven. I know that the Body Mass Index isn’t the most accurate way of estimating your healthy weight, but this gives her a rating of 12.8, and anything below 18 is considered underweight, just to give you an idea of how thin that is.

I actually think that when celebrities talk about their eating disorders, they should never give figures as it can encourage girls to copy, when misused by pro-anorexia websites.

Ashlee’s new album has had mixed reviews, Rolling Stone gives it three stars, describing it as Eighties-influenced electro-rock.

The danceable beats haven’t obliterated Simpson’s affinity for chugging riffs, though they may have inspired some ill-advised lyrics: “I ain’t got no beef,” she boasts on “Rule Breaker.” But Simpson’s still her own favorite subject, and she’s got an excellent coming-of-age anthem in “What I’ve Become,” a paparazzi kiss-off with an appealingly honest chorus: “I’ve just begun to find my way.”

Rolling Stone

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz are shown at White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton on 4/26/08, thanks to WENN.

Gloria Allred covers latest nanny’s mouth, controls her in press conference

I read People’s report of the press conference featuring the latest nanny to file a civil suit against Rob and Sheryl Lowe, and came away with some hope that this case might get interesting. People makes it seem as if the alleged victim comes across as believable, saying that Boyce “trembled and nearly hyperventilated” throughout the press conference.

Then I saw a clip on TMZ, and like Allred’s appearance with the first nanny on The Today Show, she ran the whole show and managed to make it seem like it was her idea to file the suit. Allred didn’t let Boyce answer any questions, and when she tried to address a question about whether she was betraying a boss who brought her to the emergency room after being beat up by a boyfriend, Allred actually covered Boyce’s mouth and said she wouldn’t be fielding questions. Throughout the interview Allred held Boyce’s hand, putting her arm around her like she was a child.

Boyce’s emotional state was so overwrought that it seemed just as inappropriate to the situation as Jessica Gibson’s elation on The Today Show. She was breathing heavily and looked like she was freaking out.

Laura Boyce worked as a nanny to the Lowes for seven months last year. Boyce alleges that Rob Lowe’s wife Sheryl created a hostile work environment which included discussing her sex life and walking around naked. Sheryl Lowe says that she finds these charges “sickening and disgusting” and that the allegations that she used the “n” word to describe Boyce’s boyfriend are patently false and particularly bothersome to her.

Even if these women are telling the truth, Gloria Allred is ruining their chances at a fair settlement by so aggressively courting the media.

Here’s Extra’s! clip, which is much more sympathetic than TMZ’s.

Heidi Klum says Iman is right that she has less fashion experience

Heidi Klum launched her line of Jordache Jeans at Bloomingdales in Beverly Hills yesterday. The 34 year-old model and mother of three answered a reporter’s question about comments from model Iman, who hosts Canada’s version of Project Runway. Iman said that she has much more experience with high fashion than Klum, who hosts Project Runway in the US.

Klum said that Iman was right and that she is more qualified to host a fashion design show:

“She [Iman] has done all the big big fashion shows that I’ve never done. She’s been doing it for a little while longer, and she has met all the big big designers in the world.”

The 5′ 9 1/2″ 130 pound Klum also added that she doesn’t have the slight build required for a high fashion model: “I never really fit in the clothes. I tried. But I never got to walk in Paris and do all the big big fashion shows.”

[Quotes transcribed from E! Online interview, available below]

So much for any feud between Heidi and Iman. Heidi Klum bugs me sometimes because her wide mouth seems to plaster nearly every drugstore and billboard in Germany where I live. She always comes across as funny and gracious in interviews, though and she certainly handled this issue well.

For her part Iman seemed like she was answering a specific question about the differences between herself and the US host, Heidi, and she was honest and not too snotty about it. She said “Definitely Heidi and I come from two different places. I’m not belittling Heidi Klum, but I have been in fashion much more than she has. Not to toot my own horn, but I have been one of the best runway girls.”

Most of you agreed in the comments that Iman was just being upfront about her experience, and Heidi thinks so too.

Nick Nolte beats alcoholism with the help of Hare Krishna cult

Nick Nolte’s girlfriend introduced him to a strange way to stop drinking. She invited her Hare Krishna friends over to their house and they started having drum circles and chanting. The four principles of the Hindu Hare Krishna movement are strict vegetarianism with no meat, fish or eggs, no sex for non-procreation purposes, no gambling and no intoxication which includes alcohol, caffeine and tobacco. Nolte, 67, was photographed passed out drunk on the floor of an airport in Hawaii last July, and has had a lifelong battle with alcoholism. The Hare Krishna’s have come to his rescue though, and he’s found that their chanting relaxes him and helps him stay away from booze:

Nick’s live-in girlfriend, Clytie, 39, introduced the star to the Hare Krishna group, hoping they could help him beat the bottle, confide soruces. “As strange as it may sound, the religious cult seems to have done the trick,” revealed the pal.

“The Hare Krishnas come to Nick’s Malibu property at night, hold drum circles and chant for him.

“Nick always joins in, and it makes him feel better. It relaxes him.

“Since the Krishnas came into his life, he’s completely lost his desire to drink.”

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, May 12, 2008]

The Hare Krishnas, or International Society for Krishna Consciousness, are one of the most controversial cults in the world. They were exposed in huge scandals in the 1980s when it came out that children were being sexually and physically abused in their boarding schools. They’ve been accused of brainwashing young converts and turning them against their families and loved ones, forcing them to live in abject poverty as slaves to the movement.

Good for Nolte for being able to quit drinking. The Hare Krishnas are dangerous, though, and have been involved in murder and abuse scandals that rival even the more hardcore cults. You wonder how much it’s going to cost Nolte in the long run if he gets involved with a cult.

Nolte’s girlfriend Clytie Lane was once his Pilate’s teacher and they now have a seven month-old baby daughter together.

Update: A lot of people from different sources are vouching for the Krishnas and are saying it’s not fair to judge them based on the rampant child abuse at their boarding schools in the 70s and 80s. A similar child abuse scandal happened within the Catholic Church and it is fair criticism to say that I am biased in this article. The ISCON organization has arguably changed considerably since then and is willing to discuss their past issues with cult experts as well as change their practices.

Here is a discussion thread I found which I think helps explain my original position on this issue. I would still be reluctant to get involved with a group with this type of history.

Nick Nolte is shown on 1/31/08 at the premiere of “The Spiderwick Chronicles” thanks to PRPhotos.

Cameron Diaz at the “What Happens in Vegas” premiere

Cameron Diaz made a triumphant return to the red carpet last night to attend the LA premiere of her film What Happens in Vegas. It was her first public appearance after the death of her father at age 58. Diaz issued a statement after her father’s death and also wrote a longer letter to her fans explaining why she wouldn’t be able to do the press and some European premieres for her new film What Happens in Vegas. She wrote “Due to the loss of my father, I have chosen to be with my family this weekend. But it was important for me to convey to all of you how much I love this film.” She also thanks everyone for their support and said she was screening the film with her family because they needed a good laugh.

Cameron wore a tight short red dress with a flat bow around the stomach and black heels. It wasn’t my favorite outfit, but she gets a pass for what she’s gone through. She looks gorgeous. Her co-star Lake Bell wore a silver metallic dress that was just a tad too short along with tan platform heels. Ashton Kutcher was unshaven and messy in a plaid jacket and polka dot tie. Also shown at the premiere are Eva Longoria, who still looks pregnant to me, Diablo Cody, Brooke Burns, and Bai Ling in a spider outfit. Thanks to PRPhotos.

Here’s the trailer for What Happens in Vegas, which opens in the US on May 9. It looks funny and I love Rob Corddry.

Britney Spears trashed rented mansion

Britney on 4/22/08, thanks to WENN
Britney Spears rented a mansion in Malibu starting in September of last year for $35,000 a month, and although she didn’t live in it she still left a ton of damage, according to sources quoted in the National Enquirer. The marble floors were scratched, countertops in the kitchen were damaged, and pretty much all the furniture was ruined, but what’s worse is that she left cigarettes, wine bottles and dog poo scattered around the house:

“The house was left a wreck,” revealed the insider. “Cigarette burns and cigarette butts were everywhere - and empty bottles of wine were strewed about the place.

“Most of the furniture was ruined with stains, tears or nicks. Other items, like an expensive vase in the kitchen and patio furniture were broken. The granite kitchen countertops were damaged as well. Rotting food was left in the refrigerator,” said the insider. “Spilled wine soiled the carpets and floors.”

The outside landscaping wasn’t kept up, either, and the pool turned green from lack of attention, added the insider.

“No one picked up after Britney’s dogs, and many ‘presents’ of dog poop were left behind for the owners.”

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, May 12, 2008]

The Enquirer notes that Britney only used the mansion as a party house and that after she was hospitalized in January she didn’t return there. Rent is paid until March and she’s waiting to hear how much she owes for the damages.

Maybe Sam Lutfi and his friends did a lot of damage to the house too, since Britney was hanging out with him at that time. She is said to not have a maid but maybe she could have hired a service to clean up the house and try to reduce some of the damages before she handed over to the owners. Given all the issues she was having at the time, it surely wasn’t on the top of her priority list.

Britney is said to have blown through a whopping $61 million last year, and now she’ll have to lay out some more cash to restore that mansion back to its original state.

The Sex and The City women talk to Oprah about their lives & loves

The Sex and The City stars were on Oprah yesterday in front of an audience that had screened the film the day before. There was a lot of screaming and enthusiasm for the cast and Oprah raved about how great the movie is. It’s out in the US on May 30. The studio audience had seen most of the film but were not allowed to see the end because they didn’t want all of the plot to get out. The women answered questions about their lives and their work and Mr. Big Chris Noth even came on and talked about his new baby son. Oprah didn’t ask them the standard question about whether they fought at all, and Kristin Davis wasn’t asked about her nude photos that were leaked earlier this year.

On fans surrounding them as they filmed in NY City, and the “dream sequence” story
Kim Cattrall: “I felt like a Beatle”
SJP: “You can’t be anything other than thrilled that people still care.”
Kristin Davis: “There were people writing down the dialog.”
SJP: “We kept going around saying ‘This is some crazy dream sequence we’re filming.’ We kept repeating this mantra to try and gaslight people a little.”
Oprah: “When you showed up in a wedding gown…”
SJP: “That crazy dream sequence”

Cynthia Nixon on her breast cancer scare and same sex partner
Cynthia Nixon talked about discovering breast cancer, and said “I did not cry.”

She talked in a matter of fact way about how she did radiation and had a lumpectomy and a lymph node taken out.

As for how Nixon fell in love with a woman and told her friends, she said “Kristin knew about it first” and Davis said “I know her. I know Christine,” and Nixon said “and then I think other people were left to fend for themselves when it all erupted and these ladies did great and so did Mr. Noth who I know is coming out later [crowd screams]

They were great the things they said to the press.”

SJP: “I think we all know Cynthia so well. She’s such a capable smart thinking person and our greatest concern was that Cynthia be happy… her happiness is everything.”

Oprah: “I heard you just sort of met Christine, fell in love and it didn’t matter to you whether she was male or female or what… how does that work?”

Nixon: “You haven’t met my girlfriend, she’s fantastic.” [others agree]

Davis: “What is love? I think that’s the important thing. There’s something real and intangible and solid about it, and that’s how I feel when I’m around them. It’s just undeniable.”

Kim Cattrall on her younger chef boyfriend
Oprah - to Kim Cattrall: “I hear you’re with a younger guy now.”

Catrall laughs. Oprah: “Did you have a limit to how young? Or is love is love.”

Cattrall: “As long as he has his driver’s license.

“He is 23 years younger than me and I wondered ‘what could we possibly talk about?’ but we talk about a lot of things, and he’s a professional chef, so it’s not just good in some areas of the house it’s good in all areas of the house. And he’s very sophisticated, he’s very zen.”

Oprah asked if it was true that they like cooking in the nude together. Kim said that wasn’t true.

Kristin Davis on feeling great in her 40s
Kristin Davis said she wasn’t happy in her 20s and didn’t know who she was. SJP said the 20s are about exploration.

Davis said that when she hit 40 the show ended and she wondered what she would do at that point, and she said it made her realize that she wanted to take more pleasure in small things in life. She said “Oh life is so fantastic, but it’s so charged up… you want to be able to feel like you’re connected to the earth.”

Davis said she was tired after all the frenzy at the end of the show, and Kim Cattrall said she went into a funk when the show ended. Cynthia Nixon said she was in love so she didn’t get depressed at that point.

Chris Noth says his girlfriend was told that she would miscarry their baby
Chris Noth came on to a lot of screaming. Oprah first asked if he gained insight about women from working on the show and he answered “Never interrupt makeup sessions.”

Noth said coming back for the movie was a no-brainer and that it’s the best job in the world.

As for how much he’s like Big, he says “He’s a lot more self edited than me.”

Davis said “Chris is very very male… like a Alpha male thing.”

They were joking about how Chris was doing Law and Order at the same time and how he had to do prison scenes and how much of a contrast it was to Sex and The City.

They showed pictures of Chris with his baby son Orion, who is three and a half months old. He explained that the constellation Orion was the first one he would see in the sky when he was in college. He introduced his girlfriend Tara in the audience, and said “I’m so lucky.”

Noth told a heart wrenching story about how doctors told Tara after she first found out she was pregnant that they couldn’t find a heartbeat and that she would have a miscarriage. He said she talked to the baby all night and that the next day a heartbeat was found. He called Orion a fighter.

SJP talked about her five and a half year old son and said he asks a million questions. She said it helps her realize how much you know and how little you know.

They showed the amazing shoes, dresses and purses used for the costumes and all the women said that it was a lot of fun getting dressed for the show. SJP had 81 outfit changes.

They had the director Michael Patrick King on via Skype and he joked that he’s “cutting out all the imaginary dream sequences.”

The dream sequence explanation sounds like a ruse
From the comments that SJP gave you can kind of tell that the dream sequence story was one they made up on the spot to try and keep the paparazzi and fans from guessing plot points after scenes were photographed in NY. But given all the well-deserved hype surrounding this film, I think it’s safe to say that whatever details were leaked won’t deter people from seeing it.

Here are links to the videos of the show, including clips from the Sex and The City movie. There are commercials but you can easily skip them.

Barack Obama reads the top ten list on David Letterman

Obama read the top ten list on David Letterman last night, which was the “Top Ten Surprising Facts about Barack Obama.” Obama was on via satellite and recited the list with a smile, which was predictably cheesy but well delivered:

10. My first act as president will be to stop the fighting between Lauren and Heidi on “The Hills”
9. In the Illinois primary, I accidentally voted for Kucinich
8. When I tell my kids to clean their room, I finish with, “I’m Barack Obama and I approved this message”
7. Throughout high school, I was consistently voted “Barackiest”
6. Earlier today I bowled a 39
5. I have canceled all my appearances the day the “Sex and The City” movie opens
4. It’s the birth place of Fred Astaire (Sorry, that’s a surprising fun fact about Omaha)
3. We are tirelessly working to get the endorsement of Kentucky Derby favorite Colonel John
2. This has nothing to do with the Top Ten, but what the heck is up with Paula Abdul?
1. I have not slept since October
[From CBS.com]

Obama is gradually getting positive press again after a controversy involving his pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who spouted ridiculous conspiracy theories in sermons leaked online and was generally mocked in the media. Obama has denounced Wright’s statements after initially hoping that the issue would die down on its own. He is now neck and neck with has about a 200 delegate lead over Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary after a wider early lead.

Hillary was on The O’Reilly Factor on Fox yesterday, and she said that voters would decide if the Rev. Wright controversy mattered to them. She called Wright’s remarks “offensive and outrageous.”

Obama’s segment starts at about a minute into the clip below:
