People: Six-plus years later, Prince William still refuses to speak to his brother

Since past is prologue, I expected a lot of focus on Prince William this week, following the Sussexes’ UK visit last week. That’s what happened last September – Prince Harry had a wildly successful visit to the UK (and then Ukraine), met his dad for the first time in a year and a half, and got great press. What followed was William clearly having a nervous breakdown about all of that, and the British press could barely contain it. So I expected something similar this month. But what’s happening is very strange, it’s like there’s an overemphasis on reminding everyone about the intractable estrangement between the brothers, something which has not changed in over many years. We’re also being told that William “will not be losing sleep” over King Charles’ meeting with Harry, despite William’s clear panic over it. Well, this week’s People Magazine cover story is trying to cover this well-trod ground for the millionth time:

Prince Harry’s long-awaited reunion with King Charles may have marked a turning point in one royal relationship — but not the one with Prince William.

“It’s so broken,” an insider tells PEOPLE about the bond between the King’s sons in this week’s exclusive cover story.

Adds a source who knows both brothers: “I thought it would have perhaps eased a little bit by now, to be honest. But there has been no movement, especially on William’s side. There is no contact.”

Though Prince William, 44, and Prince Harry, 41, stepped out just 12 miles apart in London on July 7, the first day of Harry’s U.K. trip, there was never an expectation they would meet.

The distance that divides the brothers now extends to the next generation. The Prince and Princess of Wales’ children — Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8 — have no relationship with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, their California-based first cousins.

“[Princess] Diana would be devastated that it has turned out like this, particularly because [the brothers] were once so close,” royal author Simon Vigar says of what William and Harry’s late mother would make of the situation.

Royal historian Robert Lacey previously told PEOPLE: “The rift is very profound and very long-lasting. It will not be changed, in my opinion, until Harry makes a move and apologizes.”

Complicating the dynamic, historian Amanda Foreman added, “Everyone wants it to happen on their terms, but that’s what makes it impossible.”

[From People]

It’s fascinating that they keep using that Robert Lacey quote: “It will not be changed, in my opinion, until Harry makes a move and apologizes.” Combined with this new quote: “But there has been no movement, especially on William’s side.” We get it. I mean, it’s abundantly clear. William is still incandescent with rage. William will not contact Harry. William wants Harry to come crawling back, begging for forgiveness, and until that happens, William will not budge. That’s been William’s perspective for over six years. It’s like it would not occur to anyone within the institution or within the royal media to point out that William’s perspective is BS, and that he’s a rageholic dumbass who needs to grow up and let go of his anger.

Harry should stay away from scooter. And keep his wife and children away. Keen would not want her kids to meet the sussex children . Scooter thinks he’s always right. The brothers were never close

    • Swaz says:

Stay far away Harry because William is a HATER.

    • Kasztanka says:

And that is exactly what he does. Harry has never shown any interest in William, nor any desire for contact. Harry was done with William a long time ago, and the media smear campaign and slander that William
constantly unleashes against H&M with the help of the corrupt media only reinforce Harry’s decision to keep his distance. And that is precisely William’s biggest problem. In his imagination, he sees his brother begging for a meeting and himself refusing… heh… yet he cannot make his dreams a reality because Harry has completely ignored him for years. 👍

    • Andrea says:

William exhibits the classic symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder. Kate’s delve into early childhood development all stems from trying to figure out William

      • Connie says:

Kate didn’t delve into anything. Her early years was getting some people to put together a chart while she carried a notebook with “notebook” written on it- that was empty. It was busy work because Meghan released the hubb cookbook. She definitely isn’t trying to figure William out. She cant figure herself out and has no interest in doing so. She’s as angry as he is in some ways – we’ve seen her turn on Meghan, her staff even her children in public. She definitely fights with willy. Never mind how she looks which isn’t the picture of mental stability. Giving Kate credit for thinking at all is a bit rich.

      • Irisrose says:

Exactly connie. Kate didn’t think up early years. It was created for her by her charles-hired private secretary, Catherine Quinn.

It was made up and announced in a single day, a friday. Right after KP found out Meghan had created an entire cookbook secretly that was being published on Monday.

Kate has no interest in anyone but herself.

    • Irisrose says:

Harry wants nothing to do with William

He has made that abundantly clear in the last six years

  2. Jferber says:

William is a lost cause on whatever issue you like. He is a disastrously weak and lazy man. He will never do England or himself proud. And he really doesn’t care. At all. About anyone but himself. A severe disappointment.

  3. Alicky says:

It’s still never been clear to me exactly what Harry has to apologize for.

    • Queen Anna Royal Gossip says:

Not divorcing his wife on William’s command, obviously. Refusing to continue as William’s scapegoat and whipping boy and daring to be happy and in love with his hot wife that William has coveted since her days on Suits.

    • Tessa says:

Scooter did not want harry and meghan to get married. He had no authority. Clearly he should apologize

      • sunniside up says:

If the late Queen had refused permission for the marriage Harry would have been taken out of the Succession if he went ahead, it is in the rules. luckily she agreed to the marriage. The same rules apply to all the people in the first six of the succession. So technically now if Archie wants to marry he has to ask the King’s permission. Luckily there are enough children in front of Archie to hope that the problem will be solved by their own children’s children.

      • Tessa says:

Scooter may cause problems for his own kids. If he does not approve of their partners. And makes trouble. I can actually see this happening. A sort of Brooklyn Beckham scenario. Where the keens don’t care for George’s girlfriend. Scooter tried to micromanage harry.

      • @dreamchild70 says:

I feel for W&K kids. They are growing up watching their parents be so unforgiving and cruel. I’m sure their parents are worried about the heir and spare dynamic but they are doing the very things to create that void. Those kids will get older and chafe against those impossible ancient rules. They will look to Harry’s example and that’s what they are so afraid of. Not talking about it makes it bigger than it is. I guess we’ll see.

    • Siri says:

Let’s not forget he didn’t shave off his beard when Willie demanded he do so.

    • Dee (2) says:

Having agency. William seems to have a true problem reconciling that Harry doesn’t belong to him in mind, body, and soul. Everything seems to spiral on from there. Disapproving of his professional endeavors, legal and media approach, and personal life all appear to areas where he feels/felt he was entitled to weigh in and have his edicts obeyed without question.

      • therese says:

Agree. Perhaps William’s attitude of thinking he owns Harry and what Harry does also stems from the little talked about fact that Harry is also carrying around in his body William the future King’s body parts, should he need them. I’m thinking Har won’t give them up. At least, I’m pretty sure I read that somewhere, I think in Spare.

    • Becks1 says:

Being his own person and walking away, I guess?

I said yesterday that we never hear why William hates Harry so much and why he’s so angry at him. The press tosses around terms like “betrayal” and “hurt” and “Harry insulting Catherine” (always Catherine in those comments lol) but never what specifically Harry did. Harry even says in the beginning of Spare that neither his father nor his brother had any idea why he walked away, and part of the point of Spare was to explain it.

But why the anger and hatred? Charles clearly doesn’t know what to “do” with Harry so to speak – he’s petty and vengeful and we hear about “broken trust” but we don’t hear that Charles is livid with Harry, or that Charles won’t speak to him, etc. It’s all very guarded language obviously but its not the same as what comes from William’s camp.

So trying to look at it from William’s perspective – but his anger just doesn’t make sense unless there are some very deep psychological issues there. Like William thought he “owned” Harry and should have total control over Harry’s life and choices – personal and professional.

IDK. the press dances around the issue but at this point, 6 years in – it would be better for KP to just put it out there that “William is booked and busy and barely thinks of his brother, but there’s no real ill will anymore. They’re just leading very different lives.” But instead, we get…..all these other stories.

      • Kasztanka says:

        @Becks1,
I answered your question in that previous comment—though I’m not sure if the answer was satisfactory.
As for Charles, he doesn’t deserve any leniency. True, he doesn’t go around shouting about how much he hates Harry, but he *does* say that if something were to happen to him, it wouldn’t really matter to anyone; he lobbies other countries to deny Harry security, refuses him protection at home, strips him of security, and even reveals the map of the estate… That’s enough, isn’t it…?
He simply adopted a different method of destroying Harry—by using other people to do the dirty work.

      • Becks1 says:

I dont think I gave Charles leniency. I said “he’s petty and vengeful” and that he doesn’t know how to handle the situation.

but Charles is the one willing to meet with Harry (albeit only under immense public pressure and backlash) and Charles is the one Harry is willing to meet with. Not William.

      • Dee(2) says:

Honestly framing it like that would be their best bet at this point, which is essentially how Harry is living and what he said in the Oprah interview. We’re on different paths I wish him well.

Because otherwise, is this William’s plan for the next 40 years? To be angry at his brother? And to tell the world every other month how he is still angry at his brother for things that occurred 10, 20, 30 years ago?

At this point the stuff that he was supposedly upset about, doesn’t even matter. Okay he thought Harry and Meghan were moving too fast, they’ve been together for 10 years and married for 8. He didn’t understand why he was pushing back against the media, okay all of Harry’s court cases are over. He didn’t like what he said about Catherine in his book, okay but you didn’t dispute that what he said was true, and again it all happened a decade ago. Why are you still mad about this stuff? And furious, incandescent, hates his effing guts mad??

      • windyriver says:

Don’t think it’s that complicated. I think Will is so viscerally angry at Harry because he thinks Harry’s got the life that he, Will should have. Will loves the perks, but doesn’t want to be king, and likely knows deep down he’s not prepared for the role. He hates his wife, and is probably secretly embarrassed that no one better who he wanted would have him. Harry has freedom, and the beautiful woman he fell for (who Will also liked) agreed to marry him. Will was raised to think everything should fall in his lap, with not the slightest idea what to do when that didn’t happen. He’s used to lording it over Harry from a very young age. The only thing that would make him feel better right now is for Harry to seek his approval by apologizing for whatever of a dozen imagined slights, preferably with as much groveling as possible. But that would only be a temporary satisfaction for Will, because it still wouldn’t change his unhappy life. He’s got to figure out how to do that himself, like Harry did, or he is going to continue to carry it with him, for however long.

Charles’s situation is different. He’s got the job, and the companion, he’s always wanted. So as big a jerk as he is, he doesn’t have the same degree of irrational anger as Will, and has some bandwith to occasionally deal with Harry on a more mature level when it suits his purposes.

      • Angied says:

        @Dee:
Because Harry has something he secretly wants but could never have. Go back and look at the time they were at the gates meeting people before his Grandma funeral. If you look carefully you will see a quick glimpse of it.

      • Kasztanka says:

        @Becks1
Yes, it is Charles who wants to meet with Harry—not because he cares about him, but because he sees a chance to improve his own image. That image was already terrible (“not my king”) and was further damaged by the circus surrounding security for Harry and his family in London—a spectacle the whole world watched and criticized.
Charles is a bit smarter than William and has a stronger instinct for self-preservation, though he goes about it just as clumsily and blatantly as William does.
Recently, he exploited Lilibet in a disgusting way; contrary to media reports, he hadn’t bothered to meet her during the Jubilee, and he allowed the papers to mock the one-year-old girl for being snubbed by everyone, which they were happy to announce.
Yet, once the stories about his bags of cash from the Arabs broke, he appeared in a video declaring how much he loves Lilibet, how wonderful she is, and how Harry and his family are close to his heart and always have a home with him.
And yes, despite all these appalling actions, Harry wanted to meet him because he is the only parent he has left. Harry has a big, kind heart; perhaps he is doing this for the sake of the children and himself, trying to find some remnant of paternal affection in Charles—something he likely won’t find, but at least he knows he tried. I imagine that—regardless of the outcome—this visit is important primarily for Harry.

      • Andrea says:

It’s nothing about Harry. It’s all William. He has Borderline Personality Disorder.

    • Jay says:

Honestly, I doubt if even William could articulate why exactly he wants Harry to apologize.

He wanted to control Harry and it didn’t work. He’s jealous of Harry and his family and his happy life. He’s a miserable man whose only respite is making others around him just as or more miserable. It all boils down to “Harry didn’t do what I wanted him to”.

    • windyriver says:

@Dee (2) – There’s that telling quote from Harry towards the end of Spare that always pops into my head whenever this question of why Will expects an apology pops up. Won’t rehash the details, but he was referring to the conversation he, Charles, and Will had while taking a walk post Philip’s funeral, and post the Oprah interview the previous month.

“Since boyhood, that had been Willy’s position on everything. I must come to him. Pointedly, directly, formally – bend the knee. Otherwise, no aid from the Heir.”

Since boyhood. Will doesn’t have the throne yet, but in his mind, Harry has always been his subject.

    • Gabby says:

      Succeeding.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

For revealing that William physically assaulted him. Apparently to royal sycophants, reporting an assault is a worse “crime” than committing an assault.

    • FrenchLadyJuliet says:

The main reason in my opinion is the revelations in “Spare”. Harry revealed some very embarrassing things about William, and about Kate too. And yes, I can understand that William and Kate were hurt. But Harry did that ONLY AFTER he and Meghan had been abused over and over and over again by the shenanigans of William’s team with the media.

“Spare” contained some very uncomfortable truths, but they were that… Truths… Harry wanted to paint the REAL picture about his life, and about what had happened to Meghan and himself when they were in the UK.

      • Tessa says:

Keen let a lie about meghan stay in the media. Keen and her husband playing victims is outrageous

  4. Tessa says:

Harry should stay away from scooter. And his wife and children away. Keen would not want her kids to meet the sussex children . Scooter thinks he’s always right

  5. Yup, Me says:

    Harry is minding his business.

William’s challenge is that he has no business of his own that he truly cares to mind. (And the institution can’t afford for him to care about anything that deeply. Look at everything Harry has done for his family and his freedom and his life).

Also, every time I see William bellowing at a sports event, I am shocked at how tight his lips look. The jaw and the pelvis are connected. William has got to be constantly constipated with a jaw and lips that tight all the time.

  6. Waitwhat? says:

It’s almost as though the most interesting thing about William is Harry.

    • Eurydice says:

Not almost, but exactly. Imagine if there were no Harry to rage against. Would there be any mention of William apart from an article or two whenever he chooses to appear? His PR people can’t get anyone to be interested unless there’s a mention of or comparison to Harry.

  7. Jferber says:

Alicky, for being the better man, of course. For being king material, unlike the presumptive heir.

  8. Denise says:

I think the simplest explanation is that William is already on some ritzy overseas vacation and he can’t be bothered to rage brief the tabloids. His laziness is stronger than his rage.

  9. KristenfromMA says:

    “It is broken.”

    The “it” here is William.

  10. Melody says:

William is a gemini, I don’t think he is still incandescent with rage at this point, I think he is just done. I know it’s a very unpopular opinion on this site, but think of how Angelina left Brad and then moved on without a look back.
Once a gemini feels betrayed, they never gives back their trust, and they will never be emotionally available to the person anymore.

    • Kaiser says:

      William is a Cancer

      • Melody says:

        Oooops, my bad !

      • Mayp says:

William is on the cusp of Gemini and Cancer. As such, he supposedly has traits of both signs. Speaking as a Cancer, I don’t recognize him as a fellow Cancer.

    • Sara says:

He’s a Cancer. Someone just done wouldn’t bother with the tantrums and keep your name in their mouth 24-7. Now Harry hardly speaks of William. Space. Virgo. Nice try. No not really.

      • Swaz says:

Exactly. William is not done, he is jealous because he keeps copying Harry, with no shame and no charisma 🙄

      • Amy Too says:

For some reason it’s making me irrationally angry that Melody is so convinced that William is a Gemini, and her whole diagnosis about his feelings towards Harry as based on what a Gemini would feel.

It’s not hard to look up birthdates. And if you’re gonna pose as some witchy astrologer, get it right. Otherwise, you just add to the whole “people who are interested in astrology or the occult are idiots.”

    • CLOVE says:

@Melody Angelina left Brad because he abused her and their children on a private airplane from France. It’s a leap to compare and add her in this context. This analogy hardly passes muster as to why William is constantly angry and envious of his brother.

    • Irisrose says:

William is absolutely 100% all the lowest vibration characteristics of a cancer man.

  11. sunniside up says:

    William needs to grow up.

    • StellainNH says:

William will never grow up. He was indulged and pampered, never forced to act his age. He has been allowed to tantrum for decades and will continue well into his later years.

Harry, through some neglect, has been able to grow and flourish into a charismatic and altruistic man.

We, of course, can plainly see who the better human is.

  12. QuiteContrary says:

William thinks Harry should apologize for …

    — telling the world in “Spare” that William is a rage monster who attacked his own brother.
    — being allowed to wear a beard at his wedding, something William was denied.
    — for marrying a spouse who was smarter, more energetic, more polished, more beautiful.
    — for founding an organization that has had a global impact, unlike his own pathetic vanity project.
    — for being the true inheritor of their mother’s charisma and people skills.
    — for failing to devote his life to propping up the heir.

    • Cali says:

It’s your last comment that’s the biggest reason. Harry was supposed to prop up William at the expense of having a a life of his own.

  13. Bean says:

William is a hollow man with no substance. Good luck England when he’s king.

  14. sharon says:

They drove them out & expected H&M to keep quiet about it, protecting your abuser. I don’t think they will ever reconcile and that’s fine because Will has always been unpleasant to Harry from day one. Everyone should just let it go.

    • HuffnPuff says:

100% accurate. Harry was given an ultimatum which William and Charles thought would bring Harry to heel. The joke was on William and Charles though because when Harry left, it gave him and Meghan the freedom to talk to the public about it directly. Not through tabloids. William and Charles still try to keep Harry under their control through the tabloids which only shows their obsession with Harry getting the last laugh at their expense. W&C prove every day why the British monarchy is abusive and unnecessary.

  15. Seaside says:

The estrangement remains because Harry is not interested in having a relationship with William.
He has gone to significant lengths to repair the relationship with his father. He spoke about it and he has made some inroads.
I have not seen Harry talking about William.
William has made their childhood friends pick a side and still Harry is not moving.
That is the problem for William. Harry said “space” and it has remained “space”.
William can’t have that be the narrative so he continues to push the “I can’t forgive Harry” narrative.

  16. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I’ve said it before, its clear that William needs professional therapy. But of course, that will never happen.

    • Beverley says:

It’s a shame. Imagine how impactful it would be for his mental health “advocacy” if he acknowledged his stress and got some help. But I guess if you were chosen by god to be the first out of the royal uterus, you can’t possibly need anyone’s help.

(Except Harry’s, to do all the real work of kinging…)

  17. Lady Digby says:

@Becks1 “IDK. the press dances around the issue but at this point, 6 years in – it would be better for KP to just put it out there that “William is booked and busy and barely thinks of his brother, but there’s no real ill will anymore. They’re just leading very different lives.” But instead, we get…..all these other stories.”
As I commented yesterday Will is not juggling a demanding job as PoW doing 500 engagements a year and all those foreign visits on behalf of his Government and caring for a vulnerable wife in recovery plus looking after three young children. This guy SHOULD be booked and busy and much too focused on doing good to have any bandwidth for obsessing about a brother who emigrated 6 years ago. This is why we are getting all these horrible briefings making Will sound like Miss Havisham locked in pain and intent for revenge on the loved one that fled. He’s underemployed, over briefing, obsessed with getting revenge on the Sussexes who fled his abuse and just not cutting the mustard as PoW. Instead of Crisis Manager trying to spin, cover up and justify his laziness he needs an intervention telling him the anger, drinking and obsessive behaviour and slacking off are damaging his health, his family and his reputation. Forget about covering up and coasting until he crashes , close family or chief aid need to take action and tell him enough is enough.

    • Lisa says:

That’s part of the problem- nobody, not even his own father seems to be able to tell Will to grow up. He was allowed to waste his 20’s, drinking and partying, instead of learning the ropes of his future job. Why was he not out there giving speeches, involved in projects, attending events? Other European royal houses seem to be good at training their children to follow in their footsteps- what happened here?

      • Chrissy says:

With Diana’s early demise and Charles being more interested in his relationship with Camilla and his gardens than raising/ nurturing his kids, we know Harry was seriously neglected. Fortunately, he found his ‘family’ in his military mentors and maybe with his Spencer aunts.

  18. Beverley says:

In every way, Willnot seems to be a lousy dad. What is he teaching his children about critical thinking, or stress management, or mediating disagreements? He’s to be the head of the CoE. Is his behavior indicative of the church’s teachings? I’d venture to guess, no. He’s demonstrating unhinged behavior and an inability to govern his emotions and that can’t be healthy or wise for his kids.

Not to mention their dad disdains their mother, which I don’t believe can be hidden from those kids. If the world has eyes to see how he treats her with irritation and indifference, surely they do too.

    • Irisrose says:

Kate looks at him with equal loathing and disdain.

She stalked him because she wanted to marry the prince. She hates the man as much as he hates her.

  19. Truthiness says:

Will was a complete s–t to Harry growing growing up, we’re just seeing it blossom with more power as adults. No apology will ever change Will, Harry is so flipping good at…EVERYTHING that it refutes any reasoning in favor of the hierarchy that put Will at the top.

There was a video that bothered me of Diana at home with (maybe 4 yr old?) Harry where Harry had a chin injury from something like running into a coffee table. As a younger sibling of brothers I thought he had “help” getting that injury, I’m less athletic than Harry and had no trouble with coffee tables. Billy the Basher didn’t get that nickname for being an angel.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

It was a gash across his tiny nose and yeah, I thought the same and still do.
Diana in that moment protected the heir over the spare. Was it due to palace conditioning? I always wondered what Harry must have thought about her lying about the injury in that moment.

  20. Amy Bee says:

William needs to tell the royal rota what Harry has to apologize for because he wasn’t the instigator in the “rift”, it was William with assistance from Kate and Charles. Furthermore, the royal rota really needs to give up on the myth that Harry and William were ever close. When they continue to push narrative they’re insinuating that everything was harmonious between Harry and William before Meghan when it wasn’t.

  21. Mario says:

I don’t always agree, but people can choose the boundaries that work for them with many types of family members, for their own reasons.

BUT when you have a family member actively praying on your downfall, leaking against you, lying about you, and promising, through surrogates, to hurt/humiliate you, your wife, and your children once they get more power?

Nah. Miss me forever with that.

  22. Andrea says:

Borderline personality disorder will explain 80% of everything you need to know about William. The rest is parenting and generational trauma which will lead you back to BPD

    • Amy Too says:

Agreeed 100% William reminds me of my own BPD mother

    • Kasztanka says:

While Borderline Personality Disorder shares certain traits with William, it also presents many others that he does not possess.
One of the key, observable differences between BPD and a psychopathic personality lies in interpersonal relationships:
Individuals with BPD suffer from a fear of isolation, rejection, and loneliness, desperately craving closeness at any cost. A psychopath, on the other hand, neither forms nor feels the need to form deep bonds; in their interactions with others, they are driven solely by a desire for control, manipulation, or personal gain.
That is exactly what William is like.

  23. therese says:

Isn’t William following the Royal’s playbook? Not having the wherewithal to know how to react himself. And that is if a royal is criticized or the light of day shown on them, blazingly and forever criticize and denounce and sabotage the person stepping out of line for all perpetuity. And never forgive. Because to forgive means that you did something wrong, and that is something a royal cannot do. Yeah, Willy has learned from the very best in base and demented behavior.

    • Iolanthe says:

BPD Willy and Narcissist Katy . What a despicable pair . George looks like a mini version of this entitled pair. I hope the other two who look like nice normal children get out of their parents clutches .

      • Amy Too says:

The current Prince George literally looks like the King George America got their independence from. It’s insane how many generations those genes can survive.

  24. 810Mama says:

IIRC William told Harry to act like he didn’t KNOW him when they were at Eton together. So…

  25. Lover says:

Beyond the violent episode mentioned in Spare, I think William has most likely abused Harry since childhood. Abusers not only expect their victims to be silent, they expect them to shoulder the shame: W expected H to feel humiliated and ashamed for being abused. I think this is one reason why H found being away in the military and taking long trips overseas to be a relief and a sanctuary. One of H’s girlfriends lived in South Africa and I think that was a huge plus for him. When H met M, and M found out what was happening, she told H that he was not in fact culpable for being W’s victim, and helped him reframe the narrative. This is one reason why W hates M, she helped H see that W was to shoulder the blame for abusing H. And then H wrote plainly in Spare what happened at the cottage: W attacked H, then told H not to tell anyone. Instead, H told the world and laid the blame squarely where it belonged. W was finally named and shamed for abusing H. And W cannot handle it.
