Rihanna calls out BFF Katy Perry for being “generic pop”

I didn’t think this was any big deal, but I guess on a slow gossip day, beggars can’t be choosers and after all, it has the potential to be a big bitch-fight, I guess. You know how Rihanna and Katy Perry are close friends, right? They’ve been tight for a few years, even performing together at some concerts. Rihanna even hosted Katy’s bachelorette party. Anyway, Rihanna was being interviewed in England, and she kind of gave a smack-down to Katy. Except not really… you decide:

Just because Rihanna is friends with Katy Perry, that doesn’t mean she has to like her music. And it turns out she really doesn’t.

In a recent interview with BBC’s Radio 1 about her new album, “Loud,” the 22-year-old singer slammed Perry’s chart-topping bubblegum pop.

“I didn’t want the generic pop record that Ke$sha or Lady Gaga or Katy Perry would do,” she said, according to RadarOnline.com. “Every song was tailored to me.”

The blunt statement comes as a shock after the “Only Girl (In the World)” singer recently threw a bachelorette party for her “generic pop” buddy.

The “California Gurls” singer and Rihanna celebrated Perry’s upcoming nuptials at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel on Sept. 18. The duo was photographed attended the Cirque Du Soleil’s “KA” show at MGM Grand Hotel/Casino and later headed over to the Sapphire strip club.

“I didn’t want the generic pop record that Ke$ha or Lady Gaga or Katy Perry would do. Every song was tailored to me.” Now… is this a simple case of Rihanna: Truth-teller? Katy does make generic pop music. Does Katy claim to make anything else? As for Gaga, I would put her as dance/pop, but that’s not the point. I guess the point is that Rihanna thinks she’s better than “generic pop” like her BFF Katy. Is she? Meh. Not in my opinion.

  1. Ron says:

How many Rhianna songs repeat the chorus or the name of the song in generic excess? umbrella-ella-ella not generic pop huh?

  2. hmm(the original) says:

I listened to the entire recording on ONTD a couple of days ago and that is not at all what she said. She said that she wanted an album tailored to her that people would recognize as Rihanna (whatever that means) and that she didn’t want a generic pop song that any pop star could sing and she mentioned the other popstars. I am in no way a Rihanna stan but this story is full of inaccuracies and I know people won’t take the time to actually listen to what she really said because it’s much more fun to pit women against one another.

  3. Mingy says:

    ha! what a little c*nt

  4. Bopa says:

She is generic pop. Unless she writes her own songs (she doesn’t) then she’s as generic as the others.

  5. Shannon says:

Um what? Pot calling the kettle black much? Rihanna is a manufactured star herself, she’s signed with a huge record company and her songs are in the top 40. She’s one to talk, haha!

Hey Rihanna, there’s this thing called “indie music”. You may not have heard of it, but it’s the only non-generic type of music out there right now. And you are so not part of it. Thank the baby Jesus. If you ever try to do it nobody will listen to your music because your only fans LIKE the manufactured bubble gum crap and will just move onto the next expendable female artist, and indie fans know you’re already a sell-out and won’t touch you with a ten foot pole.

  6. Girafe99 says:

@hmm(the original), agree with you, she didn’t specify the other singers as generic but music which could belong to anyone, rather than being identifiably hers

  7. Skins says:

Actually liked Katy, until I heard her sing. She is terrible, but Rihanna is no better. No talent in either of them, they are lucky that they pass for talent in the world of pop music today.

  8. mln says:

    I agree with hmmm

  9. eja102 says:

no one else could ever sing pon de replay?

    I call bullshit.

  10. Captaine says:

    pot meet kettle….

  11. Sarah says:

    Isn’t all pop music generic?

  12. tango says:

Oh please. Songwriters write songs and shop them around. Just because a good producer is then able to decide which songs would work for Rhianna or tailor them specifically to her doesn’t mean they’re not songs that couldn’t be done just as successfully by other well known singers.

Rhianna is not the definition of cutting edge, indie type music.

  13. Jackson says:

The few Rihanna songs I’m familiar with sound like, to me, the epitome of ‘generic pop.’ Is her new stuff all edgy and personal? Eh, I don’t care enough to find out. Rihanna’s comment was something of a bitch slap to her friend, though.

  14. Jover says:

My God, what fantasy world has Rihanna’s handlers constructed around her; as all the posters have stated, and as anyone knows that has read her bio, she’s the epitome of generic pop – she can’t sing live, requires studio tricks and autotuning, doesn’t write her own songs, and without endless promos, marketing, and vids, would still be back in barbados tender a tiki bar. Idiot – I wonder if she said that because she must know her “popularity” is fading – how really successful was her cd from, I believe, last November. Don’t believe she went on tour to promote it – not enough interest in her.

  15. Chelly says:

I guess Rihanna means its not going to be something about anything but more about her. It’s weird since her stuff is generic pop/r&b, and she started of with generic pop stuff. GaGa’s stuff is about her and Luc Carl and even her father. Personality wise I love Me some GaGa and Perry over Rihanna any day.

  16. malachais says:

Jover, I agree. I don’t get everyone’s interest in Rihanna OR Katy Perry. The songs Rihanna’s label chooses for her are pretty decent, and I’d have to pick her over Katy Perry any day. They both can’t sing very well if at all and act as though they’re so incredibly talented. Not so much.

  17. Nudgie says:

Rihanna – ‘Shut Up and Drive…’

  18. Laura says:

I wish both of these no-talent losers would just go away…

  19. mm says:

Hah! As bad as Katy Perry’s music is, Rihanna’s is even worse. Not to mention she sings like a bleating goat.

  20. la chica says:

see how easily ppl’s words can get twisted. hopefully these two are great enuf friends not to succumb to media manipulation.

  21. Javagirl1 says:

@Ron exactly! And lady gaga is not in the same category as Kesha or Katy Perry. Whatever Rhianna

  22. Tia C says:

So does that mean generic hip hop is better than generic pop? I guess that’s how Rihanna sees it, lol.

Rihanna is in no position to be dissing others’ music anyway. GF is one gorgeous woman IMO, but she CANNOT sing!!

  23. annaloo says:

Well, “Generic Pop” is right.. but there’s really nothing edgy about Rihanna, either..

  24. I Choose Me says:

I’m not a fan of their music which falls in the same category imo but if I had to choose, I’d say Katy has the better vocal chops. I saw a couple of youtube clips where she’s singing while playing an acoustic guitar live and she was pretty good. Rihanna’s voice is very nasal and has zero range.

  25. The_Porscha says:

Um, yeah, not a huge Rihanna fan, but I’m pretty sure this didn’t diss anybody. I think what she’s saying is that she doesn’t want to do a record that could just as easily be done by someone else (then she mentioned the other pop stars), she wants it to be a record that could only have been done by her, something with a Rihanna-feel, if you will. She’s not insulting them, she’s saying that she wants to be known for her own style. Whether or not you believe she has talent, I think it’s a natural desire to have.

  26. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I think every genre has its ‘bubblegum side’, including those from which our favourite artists are categorized, whatever they may be. Note for note, it’s more and more becoming the case that the actual music isn’t important, but I’m not saying that in relation to the artists. That’s present, sure, but I don’t know…the grandstanding and righteous indignation over songs studious avoided getting dragged to The Hague for Crimes Against Cool feels like it’s the order of the day. Given, blow for blow, neither of these two can carry a note in a bucket with any regularity, but what does it matter? We’re in the business of reviewing the audience, not the artist.

  27. Jeri says:

Not nice or diplomatic toward her best friend. She at least should have waited until after the wedding to get bitchy.

  28. gg says:

I can’t stand this type of junk, but I do think Rihanna’s better than Katy. Katy really hurts the ears.

  29. ughhh says:

lmao @ the bleating goat comment. spot on.

  30. actually i liked rihanna I heard her sing….. 🙂

  31. Chris says:

I’ve always thought her music was generic. In the past I’ve described it as being suburban office chick music. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  32. Sandy says:

Both pretty poppy and commercial if you ask me. Nobody did, but I think they’re both kinda meh.

  33. DD says:

I actually liked Katy Perry till I heard her speak in interviews. She interviews like she’s trying to amuse a bunch of children. It’s not cute or quirky it’s just plain annoying

  34. spanks says:

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I cant stand either one of them but at least Katy’s voice doesnt hurt my ears like Rihanna’s.

  35. Connie says:

I like Katy Perry just listen to her acoustic versions of her songs. Does Rihanna have any acoustic songs?

Not only that but Rihanna, really her people, put out two records back to back in what 15 months? She isn’t the Beatles. Or even a pop artist like Sarah McLachlan.

Her two albums came out that fast so that she wouldn’t be forgotten and they could extend her time on the charts. She should know there is a difference between her “edgy fashion” and interesting, edgy or genuine music.

She is full of herself and deluded.

  36. samab says:

she does exactly the same bullshit pop that the others does.

  37. Bill Hicks is God says:

    What’s her IQ level? Turnip?

  38. kim says:

Who is she trying to kid? Her music is generic pop music. If they play you on KISS FM you are generic pop music period. And Lady gaga has sold WAY more albums and has way more fans than Rhianna. Lady gaga is pop music but better generic pop music than Rhianna puts out. If she really said this about her BFF Katy thats pretty mean – albeit so true. Katy has ZERO talent.

  39. kim says:

Chris- “suburban office chick music” hilarious!
