Yesterday, the Huffington Post published excerpts from a larger interview with Dr. Drew Pinsky. Dr. Drew talked smack about Brangelina, Eva Longoria, Scarlett Johansson, and several other celebrities. I considered the entire interview to be pretty disgusting coming from an alleged medical professional, and I thought (as I continue to think) that Dr. Drew has been whoring himself out for his stab at fame, just be giving salacious quotes about random celebrities. Anyway, Dr. Drew might have realized that he left himself wide open to a series of lawsuits, because he’s now trying to roll back some of his comments. Specifically, the stuff about Brangelina.
Dr. Drew Pinksy is making a public apology to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in an RadarOnline.com exclusive video interview amid reports he said the superstar pair was headed toward a nuclear split.
“These comments were taken completely out of context (and) they were never meant to be printed,” said the Celebrity Rehab host, who does not treat the celebrity couple.
“I do not know Brad or Angelina (and) I certainly don’t want to be saying things that could be perceived as hurtful for them, or harmful for them in any way.“I’m deeply concerned and apologetic and apologize for these comments that were taken out of context.”
Dr. Drew, a board certified addiction specialist, reportedly said Brangelina were on a one-way road toward splits-ville, in part because of Jolie’s past addiction to heroin.
He was quoted as saying, “Just add up a couple things… there’s no such thing as ‘I was a heroin addict’. That doesn’t exist in nature. Something is going on with [her] addiction. Or she’s in recovery (and) I don’t see any evidence that’s the case.”
He reportedly said when Brad and Angelina were put together, it was “a really volatile situation” and the pair was “constantly creating things to weld themselves together”.
However, speaking exclusively to RadarOnline.com, Dr. Drew said he talking in a hypothetical exercise in which he used Pitt and Jolie merely as examples.
“Categorically these comments were not supposed to be in the public discourse,” he said.
“I don’t know these people, I don’t know the facts. Literally as though one was speculating, just going through an exercise of speculation and not some sort of analysis that was supposed to be factual or for public discourse… I could not be more upset and disturbed that these things were printed as though I was making some sort of categorical analysis of people I really don’t know.”Dr. Drew, the long-time host of radio’s Loveline and of the VH1 shows Sex Rehab and Sober House, also had a direct message for the high-profile pair.
“I wish them the best, I hope they do well, enjoy the holidays with their kids and have a nice time. I wish them no ill, believe me… I’m sorry these comments were taken out of context and made public,” he added.

Eh. I might take Dr. Drew’s word that his comments were in no way designed to get him more publicity, if not for the fact that he’s said similar crap about Angelina Jolie before. Plus, he has a history of saying nasty stuff about whoever is getting more press than him anyway. I also find it interesting that he’s only really apologizing for the Brangelina stuff – he talked about many celebrities in that interview, so I guess he’s not doing “takesies-backsies” on all of it. I am in the law profession and I have written many “cease and desist” letters to people who have committed borderline slander/libel and these words from Pinsky are the EXACT wording that the injured party’s attorney insists be used in an apology in an open forum. Believe me, this man received a VERY STRONGLY WORDED LETTER and was told to apologize IMMEDIATELY and in public or a suit would be filed against him within 48 hours. The letter was most likely hand delivered to him and he most likely called his attorney who then told him to get in front of the nearest camera and start retracking.
Good for Brad and Angelina and their attorneys. I know they (especially Angelina) prefer to ignore idiots but what this man said was just over the top and I’m glad they decided to take action.

mslewis, expessing an opinion alone is not defamation (even if you don’t agree with it) free speach is protected by the First Amendment, and unless you can prove malice of intent, it would be extremely difficult to prove. I gather from your post that you’re a legal secretary, so you probably already know this.
It was extemely unprofessional of him to offer his opinion about any of these couples, but people aren’t freaking out about that, they’re upset that someone said something negative about AJ. The very thought of the Brange splitting or AJ doing drugs causes the fans to on super attack mode.

Angie’s not one to care or respond to public insults, but in the rare occasion that someone insults her ability to mother her children, she takes a stand.
She cut her father out of her life for a long time for jeopardizing her adoption of Maddox by mentioning her past mental instabilities, and Dr. Drew calling her a current HEROIN ADDICT is way beyond that. If the right people heard it and believed it, future adoptions could be much more difficult. I have no doubt that Brad and Angie’s lawyer contacted him immediately, and that’s the only reason he apologized at all.
Unfortunately, it’s only giving him more undeserved publicity.

You are correct on this point. He was stating his opinion, which is not defamation. However, it is slander and that is most likely what the letter pointed out.
I have said many times that, in the U.S., it is very difficult (almost impossible) to win a libel/slander suit. HOWEVER, it is also very expensive to defend against a libel/slander suit. I have a feeling Pinsky’s attorney pointed out to him how much it would cost him to defend against a suit IF Angelina and Brad did file against him. They have many millions of dollars and can keep a suit in the courts for years if they wanted to punish him. They could literally bankrupt him. It was prudent of him to do some public backtracking.
If he had just kept out the part where he suggested that Angelina is currently a heroin addict, than it would’ve passed. As a doctor, he’s pretty stupid. I had a year long phase where I used drugs many, many years ago. Although my use wasn’t heavy but it involved drugs considered addictive. I never went into rehab and I don’t consider myself an addict. I consider that part of my past to be an experience. I learned a lot from it. I have been around people using drugs on several occasions since then and I was never tempted.
If I were to believe Dr. Drew, than none of my thoughts and feelings are relevant because I am an addict and I don’t know any better. He’s a douche, and he shouldn’t be slandering someone’s reputation like that. It is harmful to them and undeserved.

I feel sorry for any real addicts who have to endure the bad doctor’s advice. He seems like a vampire–willing to exploit a person’s addiction to make himself wealthy and famous. And I doubt he really wants his patients to get better–if they did, he wouldn’t be able to exploit them anymore.
Well, she hasn’t sued Drew either. I’m guessing a letter was sent suggesting he knock it off, and he back tracked. With the tabloids, I think they know where the lawsuit line is and are careful to go right to it but not cross it.
As far as crazy…I think it’s safe to say that there’s crazy on both far ends of the spectrum. My personal feeling is that it’s best to avoid the sites that cater to that.

People that have this movie version of what a heroin user is and should look like really need to educate themselves. A person can use this drug in an amount to simply maintain themselves so they don’t get sick (withdraw),when doing this they show little to NO signs at all of being high, or they can take enough to get whack out and go on the nod (fade in and out) the nod is what most people think heroin users should look like, head bent forward and kind of snapping back catching themselves from falling asleep, eyes rolling back, unable to speak properly and act normal. I’ll tell you this, there are THOUSANDS of functional users that you’d NEVER know they are addicts. They can keep their lives together, work and function for the better part of their live. If you do a little research you can find lots and lots of famous people that contributed greatly to our society in literature and medicine that we now know were hooked on opiates and a wide variety of other drugs.

Well there are reports that The JP family are in Nambibia(where Shiloh was born). The papers there say they arrived Sunday and will be there until the 26 th So as usual Brad and Angie live their lives. Oh yeah Angie stated in an interview that they will be in Springfield, MO for New Years . I like that they stay above the fray and didn’t comment on this or Chelsea’s comments. You need to put your brains in gear before you put your mouth in drive. I’d never co-sign “pot-smoking” because I have no evidence that she smokes pot beyond internet rumor, which is baseless. However, being dumped by man after man since her divorce (Vince Vaughn, Paul Sculfor, and Mayer the Player — not once, but twice), pretty much validates the description of “man repellant”.

Good lord, you little jenhens have been counting the days and minutes till their break-up since 2005. Do you have any idea how bitter and pathetic you look? Why don’t you give it up and get a life?
As a doctor, he has ZERO credibility. Who in their right mind would trust this guy to treat them when he makes irresponsible comments about people he’s never met? He’s said some terrible things about many other celebs, too. He seems like a horrible person.
And his apology amounts to this: “I’ve never met you, but you ARE an addict, you will always be miserable, you will suffer a HORRIBLE split, and I will (probably) laugh at your pain. I’m not sorry I said it–just that my comments made ME look bad. Oh, and Merry Christmas!!!” 🙂

I gave them up long ago.” It may or may not make her an addict, but it certainly is grounds for public speculation.

Dr Drew is a fake, he knows nothing. He opened his big mouth to get PR for his new tv show. He has no credibility. He has been reported to the CA Medical Board which frowns on professionals making armchair diagnoses and bringing discredit to other physicians. This man is a danger to those desperate people who seek his help. All in celebrity rehab on his show are now in worse shape, he uses them for his own PR and wealth accumulation. He had no business to say anything about those he has treated and those he has not treated. He is no seer. And yes as a public figure he is held to a higher standard that an ordinary citizen and a potential lawsuit by any he has slandered, defamed and libeled might well be successful. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just ignoring what is reality. Dr Drew cried fire in a crowed theatre and he he needs to pay for it. I for one hope he does.

That video was made over 14-15 years ago, Angelina was not shown using any drug in any manner at all. The pet incidents she spoke of had happened years before the video was made. It is interesting that someone refers to this as proof of something that may or may not be true. Does one behave exactly the same as they did 15 years ago? Is ones life exactly the same? Or has one changed over time like all people do? Or is someone’s mind set that one is always the same forever and ever? I see people everyday who are vastly different from who and what they were 15 years ago, who at the age of 35 are vastly different people than who they were in their early 20’s. BUT I guess some who are blind see only that people are rooted in concrete and refuse to accept that people grow up. JDeep ws a known druggie who ran with RiverP and had a bar with him, who was thrown out of hotels for tearing up rooms in fights with his GFs especially kate moss, is he the same person today? No of course not. Neither is Angelina or Brad or anyone. Angelina says she does not do drugs and I have no reason to disbelieve someone I do not know anything personally about whose behavior indicates is a rational stable adult who loves her family. And I never believe anything in a tabloid, espeially not videos that may have been altered.

Yeah, diagnosing people based on internet rumors and scant evidence gleaned from a 10 yr. old video is really idiotic. I know that the non-fans want to believe every nasty thing because they have it in for Angelina, but I think rational people would find this repulsive. Given that highly paid actors are literally at the mercy of insurance companies who will not cover film shoots when they believe that actors are impaired and could cause the shoots to shut down or not complete on time or on budget Dr. Drew’s irresponsible opinion that Angelina Jolie is an “addict for life” (which is absolutely, categorically and medically untrue) could cost her millions. Even if this absurd unfounded and unscientific opinion just lingers in the subconscious of some insurance actuary or studio executive it could cost her and the studios themselves unnecessary millions.

I am sure that if the National Enq which first ran the over a decade old video had any real footage of Angelina doing drugs they would have run with it. Like they have with every other socalled exclusive they have trumpeted over the years. It is beyond sad that some people are so vested in the idea created by tabloid media of a bad woman that they refuse to open their eyes and see what is reality. No one is perfect, that is the human condition, and Angelina has never said she was or is perfect. But to continue an active campaign for almost 6 years to castigate a woman who is quite honest and open for being happy and in love with her life is beyond comprehension. Life is what it is. Dr Drew spoke truth when he said he did not know either Brad or Angelina and could not then make any diagnoses of any kind. He is an attention seeker of the worst kind, one who knows better but who has lost all his intergrity in his quest for fame. He has demonstrated that he cares nothing about helping anyone but himself.

@Reality have you actually seen that video or just have heard about it? It’s clearly not drug den as you claim because at some point camera moves and you see all the recording/filming equipment, it’s clearly some studio and it’s a some sort of (semi)professional situation, they’re filming and recording openly, they all are pretty sane and are having sensible discussion even if the topics are rather risky.

Because the guy did cut himself too, had problems with his father, fought in hotel rooms and mainly did drugs thrice as much, thrice as long and had drugs, heroin, majijuana and all flowing in his viper club where his best friend at the times, River died. Hence there were an investigation in his club and the media lached out at him in the aftermarth of River Phoenix death making him responsible.
It was ugly, since it was his close friend who died because of drugs, heroin flowing freerly in his club.
So I am sure that he is even more an heroin addict to check closely since Jolie and her lighter history in the matter is. This according the same criteria applied by this Dr Whatsisname and the experts in here.
Oh and his weird clothes choice and behaviour with young women point to high and lengthy consuption of drugs too, then.
And i beleive him when he said once, that he was so drugged out at times, not knowing where he was and completely on a suicide watch that he was sure that he was going to die of an overdosis like River, at a young age.
Lucky for him he met Vanessa at 35 and it was the reason why he stops not his early twenties like Jolie but in his mid thirties

It is only slander/libel/defamation if the information is false. Angelina has admitted publicly to being a drug user. It is never illegal to express one’s opinion about the future or one’s interpretation of somebody’s behavior.
I don’t like Dr. Drew – I think he’s very sexist – but I do think he still has the – first amendment – right to his opinion. (I think everybody in the Jolie-Pitt-Aniston triangle is narcissistic and shallow so I’m not team Aniston either.)

On that video she also talks about adoption and s&m and she started talking about the pets when someone else brought up how her own pet died and Angie started talking about how
she had unknowingly left some pet lizards in the sun and they died and how some rabbits or something she fed something to that they weren’t supposed to have, all these when she was about 7. I’ve seen websites where this has been used in an unholy trifecta to say she’s a psycho.

Many doctors consider a person to be an addict for life because of several factors including the way the use of heroin changes the neurochemistry of the brain. What he said was a professional theory based on currently available data. He said that an addict is either using, in recovery, etc. but never an “ex” addict.
So you’re just plain wrong.
Sorry, you cannot sue a therapist for stating a common and prevailing theory esp. when he admits there are many unknowns about her life.

i know everybody’s on the dr. drew hate train right now, and while i can totally understand that because this whole charade was a really bad move, i don’t agree that he’s a complete waste of a person.
i worked on mtv’s “sex with mom and dad”, (the show title that has proved to be resume gold for me), and had the opportunity to watch drew counsel several teens and their parents. Each session was shaved down to 2 or 3 minutes for airtime, but in reality, each meeting was 2 or 3 hours. I had to go through all of the footage, and he honestly spent quality time with these families and helped them reach actual, if not tangible, resolutions to their problems. There was a great deal of care, sensitivity and professionalism that went into their therapy.
With that said, I can’t look at him and completely dismiss him as a person or a doctor. I know this incident was stupid and wasn’t in good taste at all, but I have to say he’s not a horrible person.
