Marc Anthony owes $3.4 million in back taxes

I’ve always had the impression that Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez lived way about their means. They’re obviously multimillionaires but you hear a lot about their life of excess with multiple mansions and lavish parties. Anthony owed about $2.5 million in back taxes to New York state in 2007 after he failed to file returns for four years in a row. When these two received a reported $6 million for their first photo spread with the twins (in People) they didn’t seem to donate any of it to charity, because if they did you know we would have heard about it. I assumed back that that Anthony and Lopez used the twin photo money to pay off their tax debt.

Now Anthony is in trouble with the IRS again, and owes a total of $3.4 million in federal and state taxes.

New York authorities filed a demand for $1.8 million in back taxes against Marc Anthony on March 29, 2010 in Nassau County, Long Island. Just three months earlier, a federal tax lien for $1.6 million was placed on the same property owned by the I Need To Know singer.

It’s unclear if Anthony has settled the debt and requests for comment from his lawyer and manager were not returned.

Facing debt in excess of $3.4 million, it’s the latest tax trouble for the mult-millionaire musician, 41, who married J.Lo in 2004.

In 2007, he was ordered to pay $2.5 million in back taxes, after ignoring the tax man for four years.

Anthony claimed it was the fault of his business management company and ultimately paid the fine, however, his financial team plead guilty to a series of tax felonies.

So if Anthony already got busted in 2007 for failing to pay taxes, you think he would wise up and hire someone decent to manage his money and ensure that his taxes got paid. He can’t just blame other people for it this time.

The Huffington Post points us to a 2008 article in People Magazine that estimated that Jennifer Lopez makes about $20 million a year from her fashion and merchandising deals while Anthony brings home about $11 million. Lopez’s American Idol contract is said to be worth about $12 million.

The Lopez-Anthonys just bought a a new $10 million estate in the Hollywood Hills. It is 17,129 square feet and has nine bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, a media room, recording studio and guest houses. They also own two mansions next to each other in Long Island and a condo in Miami. How can they be bothered to pay taxes when they have so many mansions, staff, cars and luxury goods to maintain?

Put him in a cell next to Wesley Snipes.

  2. JenJen says:

Why did she never catch hell for home-wrecking? Doubtful he pays child support either. Can’t stand either one. Yes,Mark when you live in the Mainland U.S. you HAVE TO PAY TAXES!

  3. Jackson says:

Not to sound harsh, but I’d have thought she made more money than that. Why can’t these fools just pay their taxes like everybody else?

  4. BIte me says:

He also has to pay child supprot for three of his children and alimony to his previous wife

  5. fanny says:

She is SO lovely! He should pay his taxes like the rest of us.

  6. serena says:

    What the fuck.
    It’s always the same.
They’re filthy rich and don’t bother pay the taxes. When normal people do that without questioning.
Go fuck yourself you and your kind.

  7. michael says:

dont care shes the most beautiful woman alive

  8. lucy2 says:

Pay your damn taxes!!!! It kills me when people this wealthy owe millions, and there are teachers, police, firefighters, etc being laid off because there’s no money.
How did they manage to buy a mansion while owing that much? Gross.
I do give her credit for having a successful clothing line, especially since her movie and music career have flopped.

  9. K.at says:

These people are scum- look at the debt this country is in and how much their taxes would help/ instead they live here, pretend to love the us yet contribute nothing o help preserving it. These two seem like geuinely mean egotistical, narcissistic, and have never done anything kind without DEMANDING something in return

  10. Dingles says:

Ugh. Next to the word “gaudy” in the dictionary you’ll find a picture of these two.

  11. December says:

Hahaha, that’s probably why Jennifer took the American Idol job. Their money is starting to dry up.

Though she shouldn’t count on being on American Idol too long, because without Simon and Paula, the show just won’t be the same.

  12. Mimi says:

Where can I find those earrings? Love ’em!!

  13. REALIST says:

That’s disgusting. Really, think of all of us scraping by in the recession and the two of them flaunting (such an old fashioned word, but appropriate here) their wealth while sticking it to Uncle Sam.
I say “them” because even though I realize some of the property is not jointly owned, they have certainly committed themselves jointly to a ridiculously lavish lifestyle.
As a good Buddhist, I must stop writing now as I am conjuring up thoughts of potential bad karma for them…
Hmmmm….I bet Ricky Martin, also a converted Buddhist, does good works and pays his tax bills on time! Such a sweetie!-now I feel better:)

  14. bluhare says:

Every time I see a photo of him, I wonder if he’s John Mayer’s older brother.

  15. mslewis says:

It’s not that they don’t pay their taxes, they do pay taxes. Just not ENOUGH!! These stars allow some management/accounting company to pay their bills and invest their money. Sometimes these investments are in shady things that are supposed to be tax shelter/loopholes around the tax code. They usually aren’t!! It might take the government some time to find out you’ve been cheating but when they do they want their money and they want it NOW. Many stars find this out the hard way . . . Wesley Snipes just started his jail term a couple weeks ago (don’t remember how long it is, three years maybe?)

There was a blind item that was probably these two a few months back. Apparently Jennifer did take the American Idol job, along with the Gucci(?) ads with her children in order to get the money to pay off these taxes. Otherwise, Marc could be in the same prison as Wesley.

P.S.: For the people who were so shocked about Nicole Murphy running through $15M in just a few years . . . take a look at Marc and Jennifer. It’s not that hard!!

  16. JRenee says:

No sympathy. 1st time shame on them, 2nd time shame on you. who wouldn’t be on top of this after the first time? i don’t think AI has much left as far as a shelf life so she should be planning her next move. she is like a cat with 9 lives, I giver credit for that but she should lay off the surgery, she’s so different from her natural self and she was a beauty then.

  17. crab says:

At least she’s smiling and doesn’t have that “I smell shit” look on her face like she usually does.

  18. Cat Burrito says:

    LOSERS!!!

  19. jover says:

No sympathy sad thing is he’s a great singer but marriage to JHO is ruining him; I get a kick that JHO thinks she’s some fashionista but there she is in front of Kohl’s ad pimping her latest fashion line with that high end firm; AI is tanking along with JHO’s career – serves her right but with her ego she probably does need all that square footage.

  20. JenJen says:

I have never watched American Idol again since she has been on so it’s too bad I will miss her “embarrassed” face. Yeah right,Jenny from the block doesn’t give a crap. She better file quick before they freeze her assets,I see a divorce in the next few months.

  21. Hautie says:

And to think Jessica Simpson has a fashion line with her shoes making 750,000,000. by the end of this year. I bet Lopez crapped her pants when she heard the figure.

What in the world did Lopez do to her fashion line? Did she just get bored and drop the ball? I agree she should be making more money than quoted here.

But isn’t it odd that it is only Mark who owes money to the Tax Man. And not Jennifer. Very interesting.

  22. bronwynfahr says:

I am NO fan of their’s, but the source article says HE owes taxes, not they. I know blogs arent under the same rules as the traditional news media, but considering how many take a reported blog item as the word of God, how about a bit more accurate wording.

I would think the angle for this item would be how he is living above his means keeping up with her and how she is still careful to keep their finances fairly separate. Also, how karma (and the IRS)is biting him in they ass after the way he dumped his last wife for her.

Jen Jen – Why is it doubtful that he pays child support and why would you think he doesn’t know that living in the Continental U.S. requires him to pay taxes? What kind of stupid salve to your sense of self-worth causes you to make that judgement?

  23. JenJen says:

At bronwynfahr- I have been told by someone from Puerto Rico, they do not have to pay taxes there, although they are allowed to claim assistance benefits from the U.S. because it was “acquired” as a providence. My sense of self worth comes from paying. The child support was a guess since he treated his other babie’s mama like crap when J-LO was lonely and decided she wanted him.

  24. bronwynfahr says:

    Jen Jen,

Sorry to have to disprove that truly valid source of information, but Puerto Ricans do pay federal taxes (including SS and Medicare) and an income tax that is administered by Puerto Rico, unless they are Federal employees, or do business with the Federal government in which case they pay income tax directly to the Fed Gov.

But hey, blanket, over-arching statements based on fragmentary information are much more succinct.

  25. Cakes says:

I dont understand these celebrities. They have the money, why wont they pay their taxes???? Ugh.

  26. Jasmine says:

Marc Anthony tries to act like his life is so perfect with JLO, and as if he made the right decision in dumping his wife and kids for her, but the man is not paying his taxes, and he should be embarassed the public found out. He has to live an extremely lavish and over the top lifestyle with JLO, and he’s keeping up with her, and in the process neglecting his own taxes. He can’t blame it on his accountant this time! Karma Marc Anthony. He left his 1st wife and little kids, and I hope JLO continues to ruin him.

  27. Confuzzle says:

Since when do the dead pay taxes?

  28. redlips says:

If Marc Anthony owes 3.4 million in back taxes, so does JLo! If you marry someone who owes Uncle Sam money, it instantly becomes your responsibility too. Uncle Sam does NOT play….

  29. truthzbetta says:

JLO looks like she is acting for some bad rom com in most of these pics.

Some stars give you the feeling you’re watching them do their best to act out their fantasy life in their own movie bio. It’s not the genuine way stars like Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson look. And then the way all her videos were about her actual celebrity life or whole albums titled “This is Me, Then.”

Might have to pass on American Idol this year, something tells me she feels she was “born” for a title like that.

  30. Ron says:

Pay your damn taxes you lazy bastard. Next in line after Miss Snipes at the Correctional Institute Party. You can always have wifey write a check. Idiot.

  31. Mario says:

They’re both horrible selfish people, they deserve each other.

  32. JenJen says:

bronwynfahr- you are a troll that knows how to google and look things up on wilkipedia….wow I am impressed. I am not ignorant so don’t try to get your rocks off treating me like I am. Ron and Mario, you cracked me up. Nice to see some funny guys around here 🙂

  33. Hakura says:

@Bronwynfahr (#22)- But hey, blanket, over-arching statements based on fragmentary information are much more succinct.

Goodness, aren’t we unpleasant? (I see you crammed as many syllables into your passive aggressive sarcasm as possible.) Regardless of if JenJen is right, there’s no need to be so snippy & superior.

I would’ve also assumed that because they’re married, their legal status in regards to this would be a ‘shared’ problem. They do share some finances, so the money he needs to pay off the taxes is going to have to come from somewhere. If that isn’t the case, it’s not a big deal.

And it’s not a stretch to believe that someone who doesn’t live up to their obligation on something as important as taxes (repeatedly)… & dumped his ex so unceremoniously for Jlo… would also neglect to pay child support. It’s an assumption based on what we know at this point in time.

Neither we, nor the writers on this site, are chiseling that into a stone tablet, and descending the mountain.

    Bitchy much?

  34. Cinderella says:

Sounds like Marc needs to spend less time with Jenny from the Block and a little more time with H&R Block.

  35. lisa says:

It is really funny to me because in the beginning of their relationship they were so low key. Never really seen much. Marc always struck me as not liking the media spotlight at all. And Jennifer seemed to be following his example after the whole Ben thing. I also remember her saying that Marc didn’t like the babies in the press. And he would get angry when pictures of the children appeared in the press. Even asking Jennifer about it. Well jump forward and all that has changed. He has done a complete 360. He is all over with her and the babies are in Gucci ads. He is talking about a clothing design using the kids names as the label. The are on stage together all the time..

I always wondered why he changed so much. Maybe it was the money. YOU can’t make money if you are not seen.

  36. Mikeala says:

This is for everyone who thinks he dumped his wife for Jennifer or that Jennifer seduced him into it and all other crazy stories and ideas.

    http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,625308,00.html

Obviously, they were already having problems and/or he is not that great in his relationships to begin with!

  37. madeline7 says:

It’s a shame some are only interested in the case because you dislike the persons involved and would like to see them get nailed. What about the facts? The man’s not asking to be exempt from the taxes or the fines, and what about jail?

When married couples have different financial interests, they have the choice of filing as “married filing separately”. When this story first broke in 2007, it reported that Marc and Jennifer don’t file a joint tax return,(and she can’t be implicated).

Marc was not prosecuted because there is no evidence of him showing deliberate intent to cheat on his taxes. In his early years as a singer, Marc hired professional accountants / C.P.As to handle everything, and there were no tax discrepancies.

Later, Marc decided to change accountants and hired his brother as manager. But, unknown to him, his taxes weren’t being taken care of, as before. Eventually he received notice of his tax delinquencies . The business taxes weren’t paid on three of his companies (music publishing, touring, and management); neither were any of his personal income tax returns filed from 2000 to 2004.

    His first marriage was also in 2000;
Dayanara was reportedly carrying a lot
of debt and Marc took care of it. He also paid off her parents’ debts and bought them a new house.

Marc and Jennifer were married in 2004.
Btw, if anyone wants to debate the legitimacy of their relationship, let’s save it for next time, so we don’t run out of space (it’s really a different topic)..and remember to bring along some facts. –

  38. Jeri says:

Why is it just Marc? Shouldn’t Jennifer be in tax trouble too!? I know they can file separately while married but only “Marc” is mentioned in each article I’ve seen.

    Guess Jennifer has him whipped.

  39. madeline7 says:

My understanding is that Marc was delinquent in filing tax returns for his Personal Income from 2000 – 2004. He was married to Dayanara from 2000 to 2004. He married Jennifer 6 and 1/2 years ago. Marc also didn’t pay corporate, city and state taxes on his companies that handle stuff like his own tours and his musical publishing. The story was first reported around 2007. Sounds like he should have kept the accountants he started out with; they took care of everything: his taxes were paid.
