Kat DeLuna gets booed after singing national anthem in Dallas

20 year-old singer Kat DeLuna got booed after singing the national anthem at Monday night’s football game in Dallas before the Cowboys vs. Eagles match. As Randy would say, she had too many runs in the song and was just too “pitchy.” The crowd heard it and audibly booed her afterwards.

DeLuna had two moderately popular singles with guest artists: 2007’s “Whine Up” featuring Elephant Man and “Run the Show” with Busta Rhymes. Her debut and only album to date, 9 Lives, was out in August of last year and peaked at number 58 on the Billboard charts.

It sounds like she’s got some more work to do on her singing and attitude. It’s obnoxious to mangle the anthem like that.

    OMG!
i am embarassed FOR her! that was so ridiculous…if she would have just sang it normally it might have been OK but…yikes.

  2. CiCi says:

this made me sick and i couldn’t even stand to watch the whole thing. this is the national anthem – NOT MTV UNPLUGGED. ugh!

  3. Codzilla says:

Who the hell is this chick?

  4. GrnMtGirl says:

Yeah – it wasn’t good. I feel bad that she got booed, but she didn’t do well.

  5. daisy424 says:

Talk about hamming it up πŸ™„
Agree CB – ‘It’s obnoxious to mangle the anthem like that’.

  6. Jenna says:

    Who is she?

  7. Christianne says:

I thought it was very disrespecful, when someone sings the National Anthem of any country, one should remain humble and not “perform” like that. Maybe I take myself too seriously but here in Mexico, if you sing the National Anthem like that in public and you forget the lyrics or just don’t sing it right, you get a fine!!!
Learn it the way it should be girl! πŸ‘Ώ

  8. DarthVadersLoveChild says:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I have no idea who she is but maybe now she will go back to school and learn to be a hairdresser or something.

  9. sandy says:

The fans were there to watch football. When did they become singing critics?
Respect the person singing (that song is hard as hell, BTW), drink your damn beer and shove another hot dog in your yapper.
Yeh, she stunk at points but no need to boo her. It seemed like she was trying her best.

  10. Mairead says:

It’s not even my anthem and I hid behind my hands and winced! OWCH!! That was feckin’ painful. I know she was trying to give it socks, but what were all those weird little head wobbles?

Whoever told her that was a good idea and coached her on it needs a good swift kick up the jacksie.

  11. KERRI says:

Don’t know who she is. Has a decent voice, but that note on “Land of the Free” was all over the place.

Perhaps she tried to duplicate a Whitney Houston performance and failed miserably. Can’t touch Whitney!

  12. Starla says:

Where is Simon when you need him??!!

  13. Lauri says:

Whitney’s performance of the anthem was perfection. Absolutely beautiful.

Who is this untalented child, and why was she allowed the opportunity to sing at this venue, anyway?

  14. D says:

When’s Jessica going to sing the anthem?

  15. MSat says:

America – you like your pop stars over-engineered and tarty-looking. Don’t expect them to sound decent when they have no music to hide how bad they suck. Ya reap what you sow.

  16. Baholicious says:

@D: Do you think Jessica could get through the anthem without anecdotes about farting and other “moment of sharing” with the audience?…”and the rockets’ red glare…oops, speaking of red, I think I just got my period y’all!”

  17. Terri says:

    Nice generalization! πŸ™„

  18. Kristin says:

LMAO! Who is she? I can’t believe this kinda talent makes you famous.

  19. mel says:

That was awful and disrepectful to our country! All the up n down sounds and pitch was waaaaaaaaaaaay off. Why would they want an unknown to perform this song is beyond me.

  20. Codzilla says:

MSat: Thanks for clumping us all into one useless group. Because since you’ve met each and every one of us, you know that we’re all exactly the same. πŸ™„

  21. SolitaryAngel says:

😯 😯 CHRIST ON A CRACKER!! That wasn’t OUR national anthem (was it?). 😯 😯

She’s lucky somebody didn’t bust a cap in her ass, considering this heinous performance’s location. Disgusting! πŸ‘Ώ

  22. Leni says:

I must admit that I do not particularly care for the anthem, BUT to murder it like that is very offensive. She cannot sing, and her additions did not help. She should be Fined.

  23. SolitaryAngel says:

@ MSat: I agree with codzilla, but I’ll go a step further: STFU!

  24. geronimo says:

Not a clue who this is but what about her not knowing she sounded as bad as this? As in, she didn’t do it deliberately to cause offence? Jeez. πŸ™„

  25. Baholicious says:

@Leni: Why don’t you like the US anthem? It’s about the emergence of a unified nation out of the brother against brother conflict of the Civil War. I think the US anthem is very misunderstood – by some of its own citizens, never mind internationally.

  26. Baholicious says:

@ Codzilla: You guys aren’t useless, you have Florida!! My sister lives there and I haven’t been in 4 years. Can’t wait to go back, beautiful sun and sand and I think Floridians are very friendly. I like Florida very much. I like Chicago too, great folks and I can’t wait to travel more in the US.

  27. MSat says:

Yeah- I was totally addressing each and every reader of this site individually. Christ on a Segway.

Anyway- back to my point. Let’s look at this week’s Top 5 singles according to Billboard. Then tell me I’m wrong about my statement.
    1) T.I., “Whatever You Like”
    2) Pink, “So What”
    3) Rihanna, “Disturbia”
    4) Chris Brown, “Forever”
    5) MIA, “Paper Planes”

How many of these very popular, top selling artists would sound good singing the national anthem A cappella- or ANY song, for that matter, without the benefit of an entire team of studio engineers and producers? Maybe Pink, but that’s about it. But people love them, buy their records and make them stars.

Again: these are the no-talent hacks we’ve made famous.

  28. Megan says:

Well I’m not an American, but that was a very silly performance.

  29. actingrc says:

baholicious – wrong war, wrong ideal. it’s about the war of 1812 and the siege of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, where Key was living at the time. as such, it is not about reunion and healing, but about dominance, tenacity, and brute strength in the face of opposition. not surprising, most anthems are. however, the tune is from the theme song of an elitist drinking club, the sons of anakreon, or the anakreonites. let’s face it, an anthem shouldn’t be hard as balls to sing.
geronimo – sure she didn’t mean to cause offense. but as a performer, there are times you don’t showboat: weddings, funerals, and mass displays of patriotism, among others. she put herself above her country and its citizens by showing that she cared more about her grace notes and trills and looking cool than about the song, and it is in extremely poor taste.

  30. Kristin says:

MSat- Who are you to say those singers are talentless hacks? Yes, Kat Deluna (?) is horrible and can’t sing. But she is an American Idol reject. None of those people on the top 5 are from American Idol. They had to make it on their own. Am I am a fan of those songs? No. But I won’t disgrace them as no talent losers just because I don’t like that genre or song. And thank you for assuming all of us American’s like this sort of music. Very nice.

  31. Bob says:

Over dramatized, but that’s her style. You ask a pop-star to “perform” the song, and they will. Just like America elected a “C” student to be president. He’s now doing a “C” job at it. It’s that simple.

  32. Codzilla says:

MSat: I’ve never purchased a single note recorded by any of those artists, nor have I seen them in concert, watched their videos, worn their merchandise, etc. But I am American, so am I partially to blame for their success? What, should I be standing in front of record stores, wrestling potential buyers of crappy music to the ground? The funny thing is that I agree with you — they all suck and I’d roll my eyes with contempt if I were forced to endure their rendition of the anthem. But I don’t think it’s fair to group those of us outside the machine with the ones who support this crap.

  33. lanette says:

i put money that Chris Brown and Pink could sing it acappella….

this girl had some good moments but she botched….it was a bit over the top….

that is a difficult song to sing because there are soo many different pitches in it….

  34. RAN says:

I must be the only one who watched the game but missed the singing – now I’m glad I did! πŸ˜‰

  35. John Doe says:

Disgusting, unbelievable, abusive, disrespectful, embarrassing, etc…You’ve just witnessed the assassination of the national anthem of The United States Of America. Next time, let us Americans sing together. Someone should have gotten fired for this performance. Epic Records needs real talents, and Kat De Luna is not one.

  36. John Doe says:

Please everyone who feels like I do about the national anthem, copy and paste this link to see how real talents like Whitney sings the national anthem. Perhaps we should have her sing it every time.

  37. Jenna says:

OH! She was on American Idol. That is where she is from. 😯

  38. Trillion says:

The anthem requires serious chops. Maybe Kat did OK in practice but got nervous with the daunting task in front of her. I didn’t watch it because I knew it’d bug the hell out of me. I can’t stand watching singers go off key (Madonna) or over-sing (Xtina) on ANY song, much less the National Anthem. MSat: I do think Pink could sing the hell out of it, by the way.

  39. Aspen says:

I love it when people address America as a generalized whole…like we’re a small unified council of clones or something.

There are more than 350 million people in this country, and we have 50 states. We have mountains, prairie, wetlands, desert, tropics, and tundra. This means we have a tremendously broad range of subcultures and worldviews. Our citizenry is made up of every race on the planet. The socio-economic range in America is very broad.

Contrary to the relatively homogenous crowd that visits this website (because it represents a specific interest) or even the web as a whole (age ranges and economic classes are not by any means equally represented on the net, and the “average” American is not an active blogger), the U.S. is so diverse as to defy any sort of stereotyping’s ability to ring true…except for that part about our characteristic American swagger. We do think pretty highly of ourselves as a general rule.

So…stick your nasty comments about what kind of music Americans like into your filing cabinet of “I hate the U.S.” nuggets. Save the anti-American epithet spitting for when you come up with something a bit more interesting than, “Hey, your musicians all look like hookers…ha ha…we hate you.”

    /shakes head.

    Lame.

  40. Bonzo says:

Wow, I haven’t heard over-singing like that since Mike Bolton.

  41. spoonman says:

    This girl is pathetic!!!

The state of pop music is in a shambles when a no talented loser like this gets center stage to a national broadcast.

Hey it seems like everyone is trying to be the new Whittney and have a number one single singing the national anthem-live???

Lest not forget the previous scandal about the national anthem and a pop princess- Whitney’s national anthem was lip synced and sold to the people as being the greatest live songs ever recorded.

    What a sham!!!

  42. Baholicious says:

    @actingrc: Thanks for that!

  43. daisy424 says:

    JD, thanks for the link.
I love our US anthem I got goose bumps watching it. As usual Whitney kicked ass singing it πŸ˜€

    Thanks Aspen πŸ˜‰

  44. carl says:

whats wrong with u ppl?, do u not live in the us n watch mtv, vh1, or bet?? how could u not know who she is?…do u know who busta rhymes is?? if so then u should know who she is. also, i feeeeel bad 4 her, but she should have just sang it normally and been on the safe side =/

  45. ThatBKChick says:

It takes a lot of guts to sing the Star Spangle Banner, when a lot of singers are already thinking about Whitney and not hitting notes, and initially making a good impression. That is a hard act to follow. But on the same note, she should had practiced. It sounds like they called her out of the audience at the last min and she did not even prepare, hence, this would not sound like a H.A.M!

She really needs ear training and vocal coaching. She clearly has a voice, but no direction…SMDH! πŸ™„

  46. A says:

What are you guys talking about?! I LOVED her version. Man, talk about talent!

  47. ricky123 says:

wow kat you need to sing that crap in your country don’t mess our song up!
