Jodie Foster defends “brilliant, beautiful” Mel Gibson yet again

wenn3227155

Yesterday, CB sent me some of these quotes from Jodie Foster’s new interview in the AARP Magazine. Here were my first reactions:

“Jesus, Jodie. You don’t have to defend Mel Gibson in EVERY SINGLE INTERVIEW.”

“Liar.”

“Take a pill, Jodie, for the love of God.”

“I hate you. Why did I even like you in the first place?”

And so on. Why is it that Jodie’s continued defense of Mel Gibson (in interview after exhaustive interview) irk me so much? I asked this when Robert Downey Jr. and Mel Gibson went out to lunch together, and TMZ snapped one photo of them. Why is it that Jodie continued defense of this horrible human being upsets me, and yet I will forgive RDJ’s continued relationship with Mel? Is it because Jodie is pushing her relationship with Mel in my face, in interviews, through her promotion of The Beaver, while RDJ keeps quiet publicly? Is it because RDJ doesn’t throw glitter and delusion on his pro-Mel bias (like Jodie) and demand that I see Mel as a “beautiful, brilliant” soul? Probably.

Jodie Foster who directed Mel Gibson in The Beaver, calls the embattled star “a brilliant man, a beautiful talent, and a loyal, loyal friend” in an interview with AARP Magazine, and RadarOnline.com has all the details for you.

“From the moment I met him, there was such a connection that I knew we would be friends for the rest of my life,” the Silence of the Lambs star told AARP The Magazine of her friendship with the actor, who’s been a virtual non-factor in Hollywood since RadarOnline.com released the world exclusive tapes of the actor violently berating his ex girlfriend, Russian singer Oksana Grigorieva.

“We work exactly in the same way: No bull—-. We’ve had so many conversations about the topics the film explores,” Foster told the magazine. “He is a brilliant man, a beautiful talent, and a loyal, loyal friend. That’s the man I know.”

In the upcoming movie, Gibson’s character — an executive going through a serious personal crisis — adopts a beaver hand-puppet as his only way of communicating. Foster said that she cast Gibson in The Beaver, in part, because of the trials and tribulations that have kept the Lethal Weapon star in the headlines over the past five years.

“I knew he could relate so much to Walter’s struggles that there was no way he would it as a comedy,” she told the magazine. “That Mel’s character be dramatically consumed in this internal struggle was very important to me.”

Earlier this month, Gibson was sentenced to three years probation, 16 hours of community service and 52 court-ordered domestic violence counseling sessions as part of his sentence for a misdemeanor battery conviction for his January 2010 attack on Grigorieva. Gibson turned himself in to be booked March 16, the very same night the film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas.

While introducing the film, Foster said, “I just have to ask everybody, can you see a film and appreciate the artist for his work? And if anything, I think anybody who comes to see the film and understands Mel’s extraordinary performance in the movie can’t go away untouched by his humanity.

“If there’s a message to the movie it’s that you don’t have to be alone — the truth is that the great remedy for that is connection.” The Beaver hits theaters May 6.

[From Radar]

At some point it becomes less about my growing dislike of Jodie because of her association with, defense of and love for Mel Gibson. At this point, I’m actually kind of worried about Jodie because I’m starting to wonder if she’s in the midst of some kind of nervous breakdown and these interviews are her cry for help. I’m concerned.

Here‘s Mel, “a brilliant man, a beautiful talent, and a loyal, loyal friend. That’s the man I know.”

She made her point. She stucky by her friend. Now she needs to let it go. Enough already.

Why on earth am I on moderation? I’m pretty inoffensive. Oh well.

  2. Isabel says:

I’m pretty sure he has something on her. Like crazy lesbian erotic art or something. She keeps talking about how loyal he is.

Also, she’s losing her mind. I agree.

  3. Brittney says:

Is this just about her movie? Is she just trying to save her movie? If that’s the case, it’s still no excuse, but I refuse to accept the fact that she could look past his extreme racism, hatred and misogyny.

    She is so disappointing.

@Liana… I’ve been on moderation for months now, and I don’t think I’ve ever said anything worth censoring. I just gave up wondering why.

  4. rtms says:

I honestly think she’s being forced to do this because of the movie. Most of the time she is very quite and never really makes a stir.If she didn’t have this movie to promote I doubt we would see all these interviews praising him.

  5. lucy2 says:

I don’t care to be “touched by his humanity”, thanks.

She’s in a bad spot, wanting to save her film, but she is the one who chose to hire him for it. All this campaigning for him doesn’t help him, only hurts her, IMO.

  6. kpist says:

People, she is promoting a movie. What do you not get?

  7. guesty says:

She wants to bone him. It’s her dirty little secret.

My comments have always always gone to moderation. Idky & eventually they always post so no biggie.

  8. Eve says:

    @ Kaiser:

Or maybe she’s a huge asshole just like her best friend — defending him feels almost like defending herself (and that when people say negative things about him she feels personally offended).

I’ve never been concerned about her because I have never liked her acting or personality in the first place. But it would be interesting to watch her having a nervous breakdown — “blow-me-before-the-jacuzzi” style.

P.S.: Liana, relax. We all have been moderated at some point and Kaiser (or CB) explained me once — when not only I was being moderated, but couldn’t actually post anything — the spam filter can be triggered by innocent words. I know it’s annoying, but there’s not much we can do about it. By the way, this very comment is “awaiting moderation” 🙂 .

  9. Whitey Fisk says:

I think Isabel’s on to something. Mel’s got something on Jodie and she’s just thrilled he hasn’t spilled the beans. It’s the only logical explanation!

  10. Micki says:

Most of my friends know me as a person of some integrity. But when severely provoked I can easily go under the belt and say deliberately offensive things. Surely not racial rants but non the less ment to hurt. So to avoid being a bigot I can’t trash Gibson for something I’d done too.

Whoever of you has more restrain and has a permanent grip over lower emotions – my compliments, I readily acknoledge you as a superior human being.

As for Jodie-I have always liked her films and her “uncomfortable” loyalty won’t stop me being a fan.I’ll be more than happy if my friends stick to me the same way.

  11. mln76 says:

Jodie is just a very sheltered woman who was raised in Hollywood thinking that all of this bad behavior is OK if you are an artist. She played a prostitute at eleven for god sakes of course she’s got f–ed up views about men and abuse.

  12. Peg says:

This is all about $$. Millions of them. I believe Foster privately financed “Beaver”. It finished shooting just as Mel’s tirades hit the news. They held back from releasing the film, probably waiting for the dust to settle. She’s trying to promote the film (and him) because it must be stinking the box office up. I don’t care. I’m done with violent psychopaths like Gibson and Chris Taylor. Anyway, a Beaver hand puppet? Gimme a break!

  13. lisa says:

I have to say.. I thought they had the best chemistry in Maverick. I just couldn’t help it.. I always wanted them to be a couple.

YEAH I know the circumstances were against it but..

He’s her friend, and I guess she is talking about the person she knows and loves so there you go.

I get waiting moderation after ever single post I have ever made.. I thought it was the usual for everyone..
    Now I’m a bit ticked.. lol 🙂

One more thing.. Do you all remember how Beautiful Mel Gibson was.. OMG. just so beautiful.. Prime example of how drinking and crazy eats that up.. such a shame.

  14. xxodettexx says:

i do think that the reason i am so not mad at rdj is because he is so low-key about it… he knows he once frakked up and he is just being there for someone who was once the ONLY person in HW there for him… whereas with jodie, i think she really does love mel as her dear friend and is trying to shove him down our throats and is unwilling or unable to see the horror of what he has done

    sigh… idk

as for the moderation, im sometimes moderated and sometimes not… i used to assume it was when i wrote longer posts but sometimes my three word posts get moderated! haha, oh well!

  15. Susette says:

Are we sure this is actually a new interview she gave and not something that AARP just rehashed from an old interview?

    I ask for two reasons:
    1. I’m sure that some of these lines are identical to an interview I read a couple of weeks ago with her.
    2. I just can’t see Jodie giving an interview to AARP for the movie. It’s just kind of a weird mix.

    Meh. I could be wrong.

  16. susieqinBA says:

I’ll keep saying it: Jodie is a poor director, she made a HUGE MISTAKE by considering Mel for this role. Keep talking Jodie you are adding the finishing blows to your “friend’s” life/career! I knew this movie was going to hurt him when I heard about it with all that was going on in his life at that time, he didn’t need a role like this. Jodie used Mel’s mental illness for HER benefit; this is NOT Mel’s story! She stated that Mel was a “mess” when he went back to shoot for the movie after the tapes. I look at it like he was breaking down and she used that for the movie not having any consideration for his best interest; maybe he didn’t need to be working at that moment and he was probably wanting someone to talk to and she used his breakdown for the movie; that’s what I feel. The tapes revealed this “dark side”, this beast, that he didn’t want people to know about and embarrassed him. That is not a “fine performance”; the tapes are a “fine performance” huh, Jodie? If Mel has any sense maybe he’s embarrassed by his performance in this movie.

Yeah, I believe it’s all about $$ too, trying to promote the movie of course, but to me, the more she says something “sweet” about Mel the more it hurts him and I can’t help but feel the more it hurts the movie!

  17. blaugaro says:

I think she is just being a good friend, defending him now, when his reputation is totally shattered, how he most need it: publicy. And doing so, she’s also risking her own career and reputation. I don’t think she’s just trying to save her movie, it is already a flop. Even if I don’t agree with her, we should give her some credit.

  18. ceenitall says:

Raise your hand if you will go see this movie…. Anyone? No? That’s what I thought.

  19. curmudgeon says:

Jodi Foster was my idol growing up. We looked alike. And I can’t tell you why but the Roman Polanski thing bothers me alot more. Maybe its because it involves a child. Maybe because it Hollywood saying that he is a great artist and therefore should be excused. You little people wouldn’t understand, blah blah.
Ok so I guess I CAN tell you why it pisses me off more.

  20. original kate says:

oh, so mel went to trial because he touched oksana with his humanity? i thought it was with his fists. thanks for clearing that up, jodie.

seriously…what dirt does he have on her?

  21. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

@kpist that is EXACTLY what it is..

She is trying to save HER MOVIE.

  22. Photo JoJo says:

I’m sure she does know a very kind, sweet gentle man. I am also pretty sure that kind, sweet, gentle man has a very vitriolic anti-semetic side to him. Two things can be true at the same time, and his being a good friend to Jodie doesn’t erase his being a douchebag anti-semite either.

  23. Mantleplace says:

If you knew why Foster was so loyal to Gibson you would hang your head in shame for the insults you fling at both of them. He’s been a good friend to her through dark times and she is returning the favor.

  24. susieqinBA says:

    @Mantleplace
Mel’s been a good friend to HER through “dark times” but an abuser to his wife/kids. Funny how “wonderful” Mel is a “good friend” to others but not a good friend to his wife. What about Robyn’s “dark times” was Mel loyal to her and a good friend to her, his own wife?

You can’t be a “brilliant, sensitive, loving, loyal friend” to other people and have no remorse/sensitivity for your wife/family. Mel has been a “good friend” to others to hide his dark side, the TRUE SIDE HE IS, because he’s been a failure at home and in his sick mind he tries to make it better by being “good” to other people (other people give him good publicity) and not making corrections at home that need to be made; that’s denial.

A loving, sensitive man DOES NOT do disgusting practical jokes; does not slap his wife/marriage/family in the face publicly with his affairs/mistresses showing no remorse/sensitivity to their feelings. Don’t forget that “wonderful, loving, sensitive” Mel threatned his nanny who was DIEING FROM CANCER, undergoing chemotherapy treatment, had her fearful of being deported if she told the truth about what happened (I mention this because of his community service and the family who praise him because he funded operations for their child). Anyone with money can give money, it doesn’t take integrity to give money. Mel’s “funding” for the operations were to make himself look good. Like I said remember the nanny and she died.

  25. beth says:

gosh, id rather read about her resuming love affairs than this crap –
that last one ended in spectacular fashion. moarrrr…

  26. susieqinBA says:

Mel’s silence(as well as his family) through all of this has been very heavy against him. Mel needs to speak for himself and not a delusional, lesbian who is only trying to sell her movie, speak for him.

  27. Mantleplace says:

@susieqinBA – if only life were so black and white and you knew what you were talking about.

  28. Anoni Mus says:

@ lisa #13. Word! I loved them both in Maverick. They had amazing chemistry.

I don’t know, I can’t dislike Jodie for this. Mel has done some terrible, terrible things, but Jodie’s loyalty is commendable IMO. It is difficult to stand by a friend who’s hit a (very) rough patch in their lives. She’s definitely more vocal than RDJ, but I’d like to think they both mean well and are not moved by other intere$t$.

I just wish Mel would get real psychiatric help, because I’m sure some mental illness is exacerbating his admittedly bigoted and misogynistic views.

  29. viper says:

I was all against Gibson when these tapes first leaked I was just horrified at his anger. But because he IS taking responsibility ( even though he had to get caught first ) I am willing to trust the courts judgment. I keep on thinking of my own family and the two most irrational and violent to among them; we love them and we do all we can to help them and thats what everybody does. Specifically if its a father who fell from grace or a mother whose wandered; you don’t give up on them. My own mother never gave up on me and I am so grateful to her; if anything were to happen to her like this I would definitely be there for her. Is that so wrong people?

Gibson is a man who fell form grace probably long ago – but now that its out and he is seeking help I think we should at least see if he can be redeemed. Otherwise what is the point of forgiveness?

  30. ezra says:

    Jody shut up. Enough already.

  31. Stella says:

He must be the ‘mystery’ father of her children. Why else would she defend him thus his misogynistic behavior?

  32. Ruffian9 says:

Seriously, this movie is going to tank HUGE. Defending this piece of s**t won’t help.

  33. harfang says:

I said this last time you posted about Jodie, sorry for the repeat: I don’t think she understands what it means when a man is abusive toward a woman. Because Oksana chose to be with Mel, Jodie probably thinks they had equal power, and that’s not how many straight relationships actually work.

Anyway, whatever, you win. I can speculate all I want about what it’s like to be Jodie, and still she’ll be out of line in this and the Polanski thing. I will always have a place in my “heart” (more like my vulva) for her, but I won’t try to defend her after this.

  34. Ginger says:

This is the same interview she did just being regurgitated like the media always does. Jody has been loving on Mel since Maverick – nothing new. She wants to stand by her friends and I have no issue with that.

  35. HG says:

I hate Jodie now.I think that she is similar asshole like Mel in private

  36. Hi, just required you to know I he added your site to my Google bookmarks due to your layout. But seriously, I believe your internet site has 1 in the freshest theme I??ve came across. It extremely helps make reading your blog significantly easier.

  37. Hana says:

This bitch should shut up already. She sounds completely delusional

  38. Jinks says:

I find her absolutely stunning. she’s a great actor n heck of a director. thank you Jodie wherever u are and can’t wait for elysium!
