Did George Clooney dump Elisabetta just because she mentioned marriage?

Even though many of you gave me credit for predicting the downfall of Elisabetta Canalis and George Clooney, I have to admit that I saw the relationship going through the summer, at the very least. Perhaps it was all too much for Clooney, what with Elisabetta giving smug interviews about how she sees herself as a married lady with kids, and how she and Clooney have something deep and real that no one else can understand. Maybe Clooney’s limit was being implicated by association in the ongoing cocaine-and-hooker scandal in Italy, where Eli’s name keeps cropping up. Maybe he didn’t appreciate being implicated in the Silvio Berlusconi mess… which is looking more and more like Elisabetta might have been part of, especially considering Eli is just Silvio’s type.

Whatever happened, Eli and George are no more. But don’t think Eli is going to play it like Sarah Larson, who just crawled back to her “job” in Las Vegas and licked her metaphorical wounds. Methinks Eli is going to make this breakup the launching pad for her new career. Even though Eli and George released a joint statement, Eli’s rep later released Eli’s own statement, which sounds vaguely threatening: “She will be taking some time… and then will face the press.” Eli also pap’d herself in Italy yesterday – you can see the photo here. She’s going to talk. You know she will. Meanwhile, The Mail summarizes what went wrong, and their source claims that Clooney would have been happy to keep Eli around, but she was pressuring him for something more:

It looked like she was going to succeed where so many others had failed. But just weeks after Elisabetta Canalis hinted that she could be walking down the aisle with committed playboy George Clooney, their relationship has ended.

Friends claimed last night that Clooney feared the Italian model and TV presenter was trying to tie him down after two years together.

Earlier this month, the 32-year-old suggested marriage could be on the cards as she addressed Clooney’s reputation as an eternal bachelor, saying: ‘I could never be with someone who every time he opens his mouth says he doesn’t want a child with me or to marry me.

‘My boyfriend has not given an interview on his private life since 1999 – everything that you read is just a rehash of stuff that has been written in the past.’

In an interview with Italian magazine Chi that appears to have tempted fate, Miss Canalis continued: ‘My second job at the moment seems to be maid of honour. For the time being that’s how it is, but I’m not putting any time limits. Who knows what will happen? I am a firm believer in marriage, in the future I will be married, but for the time being I am happy as I am. I don’t need anything to confirm how happy I am.’

Clooney, however, has insisted that he would not walk down the aisle again following the end of his four-year marriage to actress Talia Balsam in 1993.

The actor, who turned 50 last month, said: ‘I tried marriage and it didn’t work. I have had long relationships with women and they get bored with me working all the time. My fear is that I would make a lousy husband and I don’t want to put myself, or anyone else, through the pain of finding out. If I was my girlfriend, I wouldn’t put up with me for very long.’

A source in Los Angeles said: ‘Elisabetta is a traditional girl and wanted the fairytale. But George has never made a secret of his feelings and he wanted things to continue as they were.’

Clooney and Miss Canalis made their romance official in September 2009 after stepping out together at the Venice Film Festival. The ER star’s ex-girlfriends include British model and radio personality Lisa Snowdon and cocktail waitress Sarah Larson. He is currently working on his new drama, Gravity, with Sandra Bullock.

[From The Mail]

What is it about Clooney’s bimbos that they NEVER understand that Clooney is not a man who deals well with relationship pressure? Granted, if you’re the kind of girl who likes a relationship to be “going somewhere” then you and Clooney won’t have a future and you should just go now. But if you’re just some dumb cocktail waitress/escort/model looking for a big break, for the love of God, don’t talk about marriage or babies or any of it around Clooney. He will stick by you if everyone finds out you’re a coke whore. He will stay with you if everyone finds out you were one of the many “girls” at the Italian president’s orgies. He will stick by you if you can’t act to save your life. But if you mention babies or marriage, he will dump you. The end.

I’m sure they were done when she gave that interview.
Celebrities talk about break ups some time after they do it, not right after.

  2. brin says:

Guess she thought she was “The” bimbo.
Sounds like she’s playing it the way Oksana did with Mel….hinting at something.

  3. DenG says:

Is anyone listening? How many times does he have to say it–he’s not marrying again. I believe him.

  4. katnip says:

    Wow..

she never even got the BIG RC things with him. When he took her to the awards show that year it was so rushed. George knew he was not winning so he was not into it at all. Even when they were out with the Gang. she was never front and center.

But this was quick. they were just out together last week. hmmm.

  5. fabgrrl says:

Oh! I want Cloony and Sandra Bullock to get together now!

  6. WTF says:

The first rule of Clooney Club is dont’ talk about Clooney Club, second rule dont’ mention kids/marriage. Not difficult. You get to hang out with Alisters, party on yachts, live in Italy, get $$/gifts…..and all you have to do is NOT mention marriage/kids…

**waves at George*** hello lovah i can keep my mouth shut 😉

  7. mln76 says:

The contract ended and she’s playing this with as much drama as possible to get her to the ‘next level’. Elizabetta is going to be more visible if anything…too bad she can’t act.

  8. Kaboom says:

I guess she felt he was at the Warren Beatty juncture and ready to settle down but miscalculated.

  9. You don't say says:

As the marvelous Christoph Waltz from Inglorious Basterds would say “That’s a Bingo!!!”

I think that deep down, George envy’s his friends Pitt and Damon for their solid relationships and family lives, but does not know how to do it, so he just runs to avoid it. If he and Bullock were together, he would get an instant family, so not sure that would happen.

  10. munchies says:

I would like to think its Eli who dumped George. She’s too hot for him. a lot of younger good looking guys will take her. enough with george’s face and inverted droppy eyes. hes no longer sexy, hes old and grumpy.

  11. normades says:

George will never get with Sandy because she likes her men heterosexual.

Agree this has been dunzo for a while. Lizardbreath knew her contract was expiring and wanted to get some choice interviews/photo ops in.

I don’t think she’s going to go quietly though. Don’t ever mess with an Italian woman 🙂

  12. RHONYC says:

is cookie dough unreasonably delicious?

  13. maggie says:

Maybe George should date gorgeous women who are in their 40s, and not women who are RIGHT at marriage and child-bearing age? Just a thought Cloons.

  14. TQB says:

“If I was my girlfriend, I wouldn’t put up with me for very long.”

oh george, you and your self-effacing humor, oh oh oh. Please come be my not-very-good boyfriend…

  15. meh says:

There are speculations on Italian blogs about a big fight which occurred in his Como Lake Villa the day after their last dinner out. She called the TV presenter / journalist of the TV weekly shows she was co-hosting and asked him to replace her for the following weeks (she has been in only for the first week). This TV presenter / gossip journalist is saying that during the first show rehearsals (only one week ago) she received tens of text messages and phone calls from George, so apparently anything was just fine. This journalist also spent time with her during Cannes week and, again, he says that everything was looking fine, he says he didn’t see this coming, which sounds strange, because in Italy he usually is the very first one to know the latest news about celebrities / personalities, even politicians.

  16. nnn says:

I think Georges is traumatized by his first marriage ‘s failure and i beleive he still kinda in love/respect his first wife.

  17. bunny says:

No, I think he realized how ridiculous she was when he read the last few interviews she did.

  18. Audrey says:

So, is Clooney a confirmed STRAIGHT bachelor who just doesn’t want marriage and kids? Or is he a confirmed GAY bachelor, and she was just his beard? Are are they mutually exclusive? It is interesting that his ex’s must be signing the same hard core “don’t talk after” documents as Tom Cruise’s ex’s have signed. None of Clooney’s ex’s dish the dirt. 🙁

  19. the original bellaluna says:

    This is why a gold-digging fame-whore should just be content being a gold-digging fame-whore.

  20. Blue says:

I have a feeling she has a lot to say ( true or not) But I think if George coughs up the right amount of $$, she’ll go and find someone to deal with her famewhoring.

  21. the original bellaluna says:

Can I just have (protected) sex with him and receive the vacations and gifts? I don’t want a career in the fish-bowl that is H-Weird, and I don’t need to do red carpets…

  22. J says:

I think your right , she is going to do the interview to end all interviews . This woman has enough balls to Tell ALL . I was hopeing she was not a manipuplitve evil ass when she talked about marching down the isle . I like to root for the underdog . What a cruel thing to do to a person you supposedly love . If you don’t marry me I will go away ? Any kind words I said about this woman I take back . I hope he hooks up with someone with more respect for him . There are tons of attractive women who are repulsed by the thought of marriage and children . I think he’s been fishing in the wrong pond .

  23. bree says:

Why is it wrong or smug of her to say she will be married one day?
She gave that interview on purpose, hinting that she wasn’t going to be with George.
He is old looking and no longer hot anyway!

  24. sapphire says:

I generally like Lainey but your take was obviously the correct one, Kaiser. Laney’s still trying to spin it that she dumped him for some nefarious reason.

  25. REALIST says:

More than likely it was the marriage/babies slip in that interview-remember the post from long ago about his one and only ex-wife? I think he was pretty clear about not wanting to remarry then. I buy the Warren Beatty theory, too.
Besides, can you imagine how airtight that pre-nup would have to be?
Just watched “Up in the Air” and George is still hot. I’m 47, attractive (for a non-Hollywood person) and done with my Cougar experiments. I have two kids, love them and want no babies to mess up the situation, and am just fine with not remarrying-George?
Hey Kaiser-give us a post so we can roll out our personals to George!!!

  26. well says:

    #20
She might be manipulative and I hate this kind of women.
But I don’t find respectful having a gf and make it clear to the press that you won’t marry her, either. You know, it means being officially treated like a mistress or a hooker. He could just make it clear in private (I’m sure he did), but I don’t find kind nor productive making official statements about this topic. Over and over. It’s insulting.
I think he is a gross misogynist, that’s why no decent and smart woman accepts to waste her time in his company.

  27. tracking says:

Maybe her bad press, which hasn’t gone away in Europe (Berlusconi scandal/coke/etc.), just wouldn’t do for an awards season where he might be up for best actor and director. Could simply have been a business decision, on several levels.

  28. the original bellaluna says:

@ well – Well, if it looks like a hooker and it walks like a hooker and it talks like a hooker, it’s probably a hooker! 😉

  29. tapioca says:

Well, George has always said he’d never marry again, but methinks Elisabetta came from the Marge Simpson school of thought – “Most women tell you that you’re a fool if you think you can change a man – but those women are quitters!”

  30. Reality says:

Seriously, are we that jaded that we believe George Clooney needs an escort? It doesn’t make sense.

    1. He’s a rich eligible bachelor.

    2. She was famous in her own right in Italy.

So let’s say it’s a fauxmance so she gets more famous and does a few modeling jobs, while he gets some arm candy to disprove the gay stories.

Then what? two years later they break up. She now has all this delicious dirt on his homo love palace in Como, but can’t spill because they have a contract? Please. She’d sell it to the highest bidder and he could do nothing about it without revealing that the whole thing was a sham.

I think they were together, but he (or she) didn’t want to take it to the next level, so they broke up. I don’t think he’s released a statement before on his love life, so maybe he truly cared. She hasn’t looked too heartbroken in the pictures I’ve seen since, which makes me think she may have done the dumping…

Edit @ Tapioca, I love the Marge Simpson school of thought reference!

  31. well says:

Good to hear these offensive comments form women. Do you have proof she accepted money or other utilities for sex (which is what hookers do?). She had her own money before meeting him. And her career is the same it used to be before (ok, almost non existing but still very well paid).
    I simply can’t stand misogynism.
And I can’t stand women who are supporting misogynist behaviours.
What about a man who sells a brilliant and wise image and his charity committment and is treating his women like hookers? And what about a well spoken, educated and brilliant man who spends his time exclusively with women who look, wall and talk like hookers? If she is is not a nobel prize, he isn’t any better.
I dislike them both, to be honest.

  32. Luna says:

    Clooney is so yuck.

  33. sep says:

I think he is a misogynist, too. The same behaviour shown by Leo DiCaprio in his interviews, when he said “I have never been in love” while he still was in his 5-years relationship with refaeli. Such inflated egos shouldn’t been allowed to talk about love.

  34. Susan says:

Maybe he finally saw how manish she was. I swear she has had a sex change…..That is a man…

  35. Thea says:

George only gets involved with the hooker/waitress type because they are sometimes (not always) eager for a better way of life. He knows that. So in a way he is a sexual predator. I think he is cruel to play with these women’s emotions, and these lies. I think he is gay. He only gets excited and laughing around men. I dont think he gives a crap about anybody but himself. I think he tried to pretend he is alot more educated than he is, and he is this big politically correct world changing icon. The last few years have really taken a tow on this man and his looks and I think that has to do with his lifestyle. And I think we havent seen the last of Elisabetta.

  36. sep says:

I bet she caught him with Luigi (or Mario? Giuseppe?…) they had that big fight and she left.

  37. TQB says:

@well, I’m offended at your repeated insinuation that a woman who stays with a man who doesn’t want to get married and pop out kids is somehow allowing herself to be treated like a whore. Lots of women don’t want the traditional package, you know, and it’s rather sexist of you to assume otherwise. Eli said she does want marriage and kids, and she is now free to find someone else who does. Just because he doesn’t want to put a ring on it does not make him a whoremonger.

  38. Tomas says:

Go George go! Not eveyone wants to be stuck in an antiquated institution, forced on us by society, that rarely ever works!!!

  39. fizXgirl314 says:

I totally agree with well above at #26… he’s so eager to publicly claim that he’s basically just using all his girlfriend. Granted, it must be fun and all, but keep that shit private… it automatically makes the girl you’re with look cheap…

  40. well says:

    @37
I didn’t say this. What I find unrespectful and gross is a man who PUBLICLY says he will never marry the person he is living with. It’s a sensitive topic that should be treated in private. He really doesn’t need to talk about this to the media. No matter what they agree on about the nature of their relationship that is definitely their own business.

  41. WhiteNoise says:

I think she’s better off out of this. I’m finding Clooney increasingly sleazy somehow, not the non-commitment bit, that’s his business, just how he comes across, very egotistic, arrogant and self-absorbed. He also comes across as someon who at heart really doesn’t like women very much. The way he behaves in his so-called private life is in such contrast to the way he acts in public. A lot of people seem to buy the Classy Clooney bit but I’ve never seen him like that, and the older he gets, the less attractive he seems as a person.

  42. Aqua says:

IF Elisabetta has changed her mind about wanting to get married and possible start a family one day she has every right to do so.Although I personally don’t think she did.She pushed the issue and George pushed back. He’s always been honest about where he stands on the issue of marriage and having a family,so now because of her possible change of heart and her mind she must be prepared to leave the relationship and hopefully find someone more in line with what she wants in life.

  43. kitty says:

Georgie porgie puddin’ and pie kissed the girls and made them cry…..it’s time for ol’ George to chill and reassess what he’s doing with these women. Especially the ones who can’t speak proper English and are known for being whores.

  44. JennJenn says:

Saying that he never wants to get married or have kids is not the same as saying he doesn’t want to marry or have kids with Eli or any other specific girlfriend. It’s no different than someone expressing the opposite wish to get married and have kids someday. Elisabetta is not a loser in this. She enjoyed an exciting relationship with an attractive man, and if it’s commitment she’s looking for, she is now free to seek a man who wants the same.

  45. Molly says:

Berlusconi is the PRIME MINISTER of Italy not the president. The president doesn’t held much political power like many other European countries.

  46. ZenB says:

I hope she talks. None of them have ever talked.

And WTF is up with her. She looks like a woman in the red dress. Did she have bad plastic surgery or something?

  47. Louise says:

The good thing about George is he’s extremely upfront about not wanting marriage and kids. Also I think he wants a certain type of woman. Most of his girlfriends are waitresses and barely working model/actresses. I think he likes being the star and having women be in awe of him. That’s why I can’t imagine him ever dating somebody like Sandra Bullock.

  48. Chris says:

    I guess he got bored.

  49. april says:

To defend George, yes he is upfront about not getting married and I don’t know why the women he dates do not get that. On the other hand, what is he telling these women in private that they think they have a chance of marrying him? It seems like he might be leading them on anyway.

  50. Aqua says:

Bottom line here folks,is that Elisabetta just wanted to be or hoped to be the one woman George would marry.
