Here are some photos of Lady Gaga in Japan over the weekend, where she performed at the MTV Video Music Aid Japan concert, which raised money for the Japanese Red Cross. Gaga has done a lot to raise money for Japanese relief and rebuilding funds in the wake of the March tsunami, which left so much of Japan devastated. Before we talk about how Gaga is a good person for focusing so much energy on Japanese relief funds, can we talk about her “eyes”? When I first saw the photos, I thought she had actually attached something ON TOP of her eyes to make them look like those big-eyed girls from anime and manga that the Japanese embrace. But Gaga achieved the look with makeup, I think. She just did the “big eye” look on her eyelids, and THEN SHE KEPT HER EYES SHUT. The entire time.
Gaga not only performed, she did a press conference (video below) where she discussed her struggles (although I think she’s still telling some lies about what it was like for her to grow up in Manhattan, but whatever), and she says that her own struggles made her understand that people should “Never give up on the dream of Japan; never give up on the dream of its people; and never give up on the dream of the future.” A lovely sentiment, which Gaga said WITH HER EYES CLOSED. She’s… crazy…? Or is she just trying too hard? Or should we give her credit for really believing in a look and working to pull it off? Eh.

She did the anime eyes before and considering the area I think the criticism is silly, there’s a level of eccentricity celebrated in Japan which is just pouted on over here.
Gwen Stefani shined a bit of a spotlight on the Harajuku fashion over here. Besides…are people really surprised by makeup compared to the time she wore head to toe lace covering everything including her face?

Used to like her a lot, but it’s too much now. Her constant alterations have become banal and uninteresting. Gaga says that she’s a student of fame and media mastery, but she has no idea how burned out everyone is with her image.
Even the Queen of pop, Madonna, takes breaks and doesn’t bombard the media with ridiculous outfits, etc. Girl needs to go back to school and learn a few more lessons cause she’s not going to have the longevity of Madge.

LOVE THE EYES!!!! Gaga isn’t the first to do this, there is a tutorial on Youtube by a very talented young woman who goes by the screen name “myeyeshadowisodd”, which is “My eyeshadow is odd” with no spaces, on how to do this…it would make a great Halloween look but I gotta applaud Gaga for wearing this look on a red carpet.

What are you folks? Dried-up old farts who’ve forgotten how to play and have fun? She’s doing her thing (whatever that may be) having a blast and making money.
She’s not doing anything different than Alice Cooper, KISS (in their heyday), Bowie, Slipknot, Gwar or anyone else with a gimmick in the business. All the aforementioned never made any public appearance without their schtick or in Bowie’s case, personas that he lived 24/7.
Mabye this is just who she is like Nina Hagen, Lena Lovitch, Prince, Boy George or Grace Jones and simply “weird.” Again, so what.
And a copycat? Cripes all of the above could be said to have “copied” Little Richard, Josephine Baker, Gay or punk subculture, the horror film genre, religious/occult themes and incorporated it into what they do and how they present(ed) themselves.
Why does GaGa bother you so much? She’s not working in your frigging bank, she’s a performer, an entertainer and doing very well at.
If you don’t like her don’t listen to her music, don’t look at her. She’s popular but not exactly ubiquitous, so there’s always something else to occupy your attention with.
Go throw on some glitter and lighten the hell up already.

gaga isn’t the first artist to be wacky and she won’t be the last. elton john, david bowie, peter gabriel, etc. all embraced the glamrock look but as an aspect of performing, not the entire thing. and when they dropped the goofy costumes they could, because they had real talent to back it up. 30 years later, these artists are still around. madonna in her early days was pretty outrageous, but she always did it with a wink and made it fun. that’s something that seems to be missing with gaga -she’s so humorless.

I shouldn’t, but feel compelled to put in my opinion, too.
1) Gaga is not on my “favorites” list, by a long shot, however, I do feel like she has a VERY LARGE AND GRACIOUS HEART. She truly appreciates her fans, goes to great lengths to show her affection & appreciation…&, to me, this is so refreshing. In light of the celebrities out there now, & their sense of entitlement (where that comes from I don’t know), some of them being outright nasty in public (Avril Lavigne), & how it’s so obvious they feel they are “better than,” YES, Gaga is a breath of fresh air. She seems to have some humility. That being said…
2) This “anime eye-look” that she was attempting….NO! If I try hard & focus on what she’s trying to present…I can KIND OF see it…but what I REALLY SEE is just a pathetic attempt. What I really see is heavy over-blown make-up & that she’s standing there w/her eyes closed. It’s like she had this idea, & just “did it” spontaneously, & IT DOESN’T WORK (@ least for me). She’s not even putting much thought..she gets an idea & just does it for the public. She’s not trying these ideas out & “testing” first, to see how she really presents. THIS IS THE WORK OF AN EXTREMELY AMATEUR “artist.” It’s kindergarten stuff. I’m not even getting the vibe of artist w/her…that’s a too sophisticated title for the crap she’s putting out there.
3)I think Gaga has a beautiful voice…however, her music is not edgy (doesn’t “go” w/the look she presents). Her music (w/the exception of like, 3 songs) is SO BORING. The music is really just so boring, so manufactured..kinda like 70′s reject, side B “filler songs” to make a complete CD.
4)I’m tired of her drama. The way she spoke of her past, where/what she “came from” to be what she is today (in the clip provided)…oh PULEEZ. I feel this is complete fabrication, the likes of which is a desperate plea for more press…more attention. I don’t doubt for 1 minute that she had to work really, really hard to become famous, but she’s almost trying to present herself like she came from the ghetto, & almost like she’s implying that she was an unloved, abused child. I KNOW she did not say this…but w/all the drama in her delivery…one could get such an impression….which I feel she’s trying to invoke sympathy from the public. I think she came from a nice, middle-class family.

Ugh, I think it’s safe to say that 99% of us are suffering from Gaga exhaustion (the other 1% are her cult members lol).
The eye makeup doesn’t really look like anime eyes because the there’s no iris and pupil sketched in; I can clearly see her black eyelid.

Oh please. Isn’t it very inappropriate to stand there and nag and lie about your poor upbringing (didn’t she go to the same school as Paris Hilton?) and tought times when you’re at a fundraising for tsunami victims? It becomes pretty insignificant in comparison.

Agree original kate: it’s well known and in biographies her parents helped her to get in clubs and get before producers; rob fusari also helped her, and he’s a music insider; but the fact that she never laughs at herself illustrates her insecurity; her music is disposable pop, nothing more, btw was written with three other people the pop song of the decade supposedly isn’t even entirely hers, and weird al’s spoof is better; laugh at me if you want but, for ex.,millions have seen zep’s legendary msg 1973 performance on youtube, and the comments are always the same – where’s my time machine and who plays like that anymore; lady xerox is painfully average; you have to be ignorant of all music older than 10 yrs to say she’s great, and no one 20-30 yrs. from now is going to say I need a time machine to watch her 2011 hbo special. I’m not a big fan of her music or costumes, and I think she’s a bit of a pretentious twat. But that said, I love this! I admire her commitment. It’s hilarious and ridiculous but goddamnit she’s going to do it.
No, it’s not the first time this has been done but it’s probably the first time a lot of people have seen that look.
In the interviews I’ve seen, she’s charismatic, gracious, and she’s still trying to be new every time whereas a lot of other celebs are on automatic; that’s admirable.
