Jennifer Lawrence in a Tom Ford LBD in Paris: gorgeous or not glam enough?

Here are some photos from the Paris premiere of The Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence didn’t wear gold! Thank God. She wore gold dresses to both the LA and London premieres, and don’t even yell at me. I know WHY she wore gold. But it still wasn’t a great idea to wear two gold gowns back-to-back. It also wasn’t a great idea to wear those particular gold gowns, just because neither of them were particularly flattering. So I’m glad to see J-Law in an LBD by Tom Ford. That’s a zipper!! The whole exposed back thing – that’s not piping. That’s a zipper. Do you like it? I kind of do.

Since I know J-Law is putting herself out there like another Kirsten Stewart (another young actress fronting a major franchise), let me say that in these photos particularly, I’m reminded of K-Stew. I think it’s Jennifer’s bad posture. This dress begs to “worked”. She’s supposed to be showing off her back, and J-Law has a great figure, so why is slumped? I think she’s uncomfortable in the dress. That’s what it seems like from these photos. Also – I really dislike her hair here. To me, the look on her face is “I should rethink these sketchy bangs.”

Oh, and here’s Elizabeth Banks in Marc Jacobs. While I haven’t loved every dress she’s worn for this promotional trail, Banks has been doing a much better job than Jennifer Lawrence. Banks really gives a crap about fashion, and it shows. This dress is kind of amazing too.

She doesn’t look comfortable in her clothing choices. She’s so plain.

    • P says:

Agreed, she’s plain and it’s amusing to me when people make up excuses for her unwillingness/bad posture/badmouthing and everything in between. Elizabeth is probably the only good thing from this promotional tour.

      • Chatcat says:

That is exactly why I like her! She is not your typical celeb 22 year old. I think this dress is more HER then the two gold dresses she wore in the prev premiers.

  2. Neelyo says:

Banks is showing the young ones how it’s done.

Lawrence looks much better when she isn’t smiling.

    • Rachel says:

Banks is definitely BRINGING IT. And I love that her choices have also reflected a style befitting of her character in the film.

      • the original bellaluna says:

That’s what struck me as well! That’s an “Effie Trinket” if ever I saw one.

  3. Naye in VA says:

i dont think its comparable to Kristin Stewart because she is trying so much harder here than her, starting with the fact that she actually smiles.

i think the dress is tastefull but she looks a but concerned that it may fall off her shoulders, and looking at the cut that seems like a possibility. Beautiful girl. The styling would be perfect if she had a slight Hollywood curl to her hair

    • elvyn says:

      THIS! I agree

    • dahlia says:

this insistence that all women “smile” like beauty contestants is grating to me. No one is complaining about the fact that Liam or Robert Pattinson for that matter never full on smile on the red carpet.

Is Liam not trying hard enough because he refuses to go beyond a closed mouth smirk at all times? Is this a sign he’s unappreciative and ungrateful? Or do we give him a pass because he simply owns a penis and is hot while nonsmiling? It’s all very silly, the sexual politics of smile expectations.

      • Naye in VA says:

Dahlia im one of those people that get crazy eyes when the camera is pointed at them. That being said..KS looks Entirely like she does not want to be there. All the guys you just named seem to just be putting on their cool boy stance for the crowd and do smile often. Not so much with Krtistin Stewart. even her body language says “i hate it here” i dont get that vibe from the guys. In fact I just watched an old rerun of Jimmy Kimmel where the whole Twilight cast was on an everybody looked like they were having a good time except for KS who looked too cool for school.

And i actually like KS. JL just seems like a good girl with a good attitude and its appreciated.

      • dahlia says:

Kristen Stewart comes off very tomboyish to me. So, her closed mouth smirks, not unlike Liam’s, may just be her particular brand of swagger that is usually more associated with dudes. On women, closed mouthed smiles and smirks are often interpreted as haughty or indignant, but I don’t think that’s a fair assessment.

I get why people think that, I do, most girls on a red carpet are more bubbly. JL here is bubbly and adorable for instance. I just don’t know if it’s fair to judge Stewarts gestures solely by what other girls do when she merely reminds me more of how guys act on a red carpet-more subdued and less “on.” Even her stances are tomboyish, sorta slouched and casual.

I don’t know if that’s a bad thing either, I really can’t stand repressive gender role rules, and starlets are given especially oppressive ones. Double standards just suck, and it’s sad that she’s called a ungrateful for not showing teeth while she smiles(not saying you are saying that) while Liam and JOsh aren’t smiling and no one is calling them out for ingratitude.

      • I Choose Me says:

        Thank you!

I think Kristen is actually socially awkward which she’s trying to overcome so although I don’t like her mannerisms sometimes or the dumb shit she says, I actually find it refreshing that she’s not like other starlets.

Me, I freaking hate smiling in photographs. People think Victoria B is bad? – I give bitch-face like no other. When I do smile, I look drunk or in pain. Also agree wholeheartedly that male celebs don’t get nearly as much flack for not smiling in photographs.

      • Endo says:

You are correct – this has actually been studied. Both women & men are more likely to describe non-smiling men as intense, serious, pensive or just neutral while seeing non-smiling women as stuck-up, unfriendly, angry, arrogant and/or impolite.

Part of this is cultural – American respondents tended to be the most negative about non-smiling women.

    • P says:

@dahlia, thank you for this. Some people don’t feel comfortable smiling, I’m one of those honestly and it’s stupid to think you have to give a forceful smile to please everyone. The fact that some people just don’t feel comfortable smiling does not mean they are not trying or that they would rather be somewhere else. Stop treating this Lawrence girl like she’s the holy grail.

      • ADT says:

Too bad Kristen Stewart is just the worst. It’s like she doesn’t realize that all she does is make shitty movies for preteens. She acts like what she’s doing is the be-all-end-all of movie making. And it isn’t because she doesn’t smile. It’s because she looks like she is just way too cool to be doing any of the red carpet things or promotions. She always looks completely not presentable and unkempt.

The thing is, though, Kristen Stewart does do that smirk half smile thing, and when she does that she looks less pissed off and actually fine with being where she is. But she so rarely even smirks. Most of the time she just looks dead.

Either way, Jennifer Lawrence has already been nominated for an Oscar, so there’s really no comparison between Kristen Stewart’s shitty acting an demeanor and Jennifer Lawrence.

      • OlsenTriplet says:

See what Endo said. This is a calculated thing. Smiling women (showing teeth) are seen as more attractive and likable, while men not showing teeth are seen as more attractive and likable.

  4. tan says:

the dress looks so undone and ill-fitting. I find the hair is slightly improved, but will prefer it without bangs. She have round face, and with bangs it looks even rounder. I’ve been loving all elizabeth banks dresses tho, it’s daring and it suits her character

    • marlee says:

      ^^this.

The dress looks unfinished to me and isn’t really doing her body any favors, even though it’s black.

Also, as I mentioned previously, I really dislike her hair this color. Or maybe it’s the cut… those bangs? But she has had bangs for a while, right? Whatever is happening with her hair/makeup is making her face look chipmunky to me.

  5. Franny says:

There are certain people who don’t have the mouthes to pull of lipstick. I’m one of them so I know – emphasize the eyes, don’t attract attention to your mouth.

I love that Elizabeth Banks has these kind of crazy outfits that are a hint at her role in the movie. The dresses are crazy enough to stand out, but still beautiful enough to be fashion forward.

  6. Michele says:

In all fairness to Jennifer, Elzabeth is a 38-year-old woman, almost twice JL’s age. She has had the luxury of time to hone her fashion sense over the years. I doubt Elizabeth was as fashion savvy as she is now at Jennifer’s age. With that said, I like the dress in theory but Jennifer does look uncomfortable in it. I’m glad her makeup artists have toned down the heavy back eyeliner. She looks fresh faced and sweet in these pictures.

  7. Gattis says:

    Excessively artificial,but always pretty

  8. Hehehe Hoe says:

Not feeling both dresses. Also every time you say j-law I keep thinking you mean Jude law lol.

  9. dahlia says:

Jennifer doesn’t have great fashion instincts, but she has a great figure to help even out that fact.

She’s very cute in the face, but she’s very girl next doorish though. Cute and accessible. I think the makeup artists are attempting to give her almost lidless eyes some shape with the heavy eye makeup and eyeliner, while over contouring her cheeks to give her face a less full look. And I think that’s dumb. SHe’s young and cute, just let her face be. The result is an overly made up face on someone too young for that amount of makeup. Her makeup here is much better, more fresh faced. But I would have skipped the lipstick on her, a muted color would have been better.

  10. really says:

How does a 21 year old look like she’s had botox, in almost every photo? Is it from previous plastic surgery or does she just need to relax? I just don’t remember her looking so stiff in “Winter’s Bone”.

    • Esmom says:

See comment above, I also think it’s the heavy-handed makeup that’s creating the illusion of age/procedures.

  11. thinkaboutit says:

I agree. She was so stunning in the 2011 Oscars with that amazing red dress. What happened? Hard to believe it’s even the same girl.

  12. thinkaboutit says:

This is an amazing dress…for a woman. It’s way too much for a 21 year old, thus her discomfort. I don’t think she’s worried it will fall off…it has sleeves and is pretty tight around the bust, so I don’t even think it has any room to slip in an unfortunate or embarassing way.

    • DreamyK says:

I love the dress, too. Jennifer has an amazing body, but the dress is for someone of a “certain age”.

I don’t get all the Jennifer hate on here. She’s one of the very few actresses that actively speaks out on not being body obsessed

Banks looks like a Barbie. That dress isn’t age appropriate on her at all.

      • Snow says:

You buy that? I read her as being incredibly insecure and self conscious about her looks as she feels the need to emphasize it in every interview. She can’t even hide it. She also reinforces the idea that pits women against each other based on their body type, Skinny vs. Curvy. She used the word “scarecrow” to describe women of a smaller size, and said at her (formerly) chubbier size she looked more “real”. Because thin and lithe women are not “real”, evidently they don’t exist. She mentions her eating habits, like how she would munch down everyone’s burgers at school because they weren’t eating any. And she’s not talking about this so often simply because she’s being asked about it, Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan and her other peers don’t go over this as much as she does. My guess? She’s oozing with insecurity and attempting to mask it with this “body-conscious” pitch. And really, that’s fine if that’s just the way that she is. But let’s call a spade a spade.

  13. cara says:

she looks sloppy, awkward and uncomfortable. kstew 2.0.

she’s cute from the profile, but somewhat plain from the front, especially when she smiles. I like her shape though, she looks athletic.

  14. Mitch Buchanan Rocks says:

When doing the back pose, she looks so much like Renee Zelleweger – I thought the person in the article photo was Renee.

  15. lucy2 says:

All of Banks’ dresses have been a little out there, but all are totally working.

Jennifer’s dress is better than the shiny gold stuff she’s been sporting, but I think she needs a new stylist for everything.

  16. Esmom says:

ITA, just not polished enough. This look is an improvement to me, I think because her hair is sleeker. And I wasn’t a fan of the gold dresses either (and I just saw in the grocery store that she’s wearing a gold dress on a magazine cover!), so this is a nice pause from the shiny and metallic looks.

Elizabeth Banks is knocking it out of the park every time. Is it me or does she look like she could be Julie Bowen’s (healthier looking) sister?

  17. mari says:

ITA. Potential is there, execution is lacking.

  18. laura says:

I think the hair is an improvement, compared to the last two red carpet appearances, but I think the make up looks too heavy. She’s got a great figure and a naturally cute face if they toned down the make up a little and let her natural look shine maybe over all she would have looked more radiant and comfortable in that dress.

  19. Abby says:

She does look like Rene Zellweger in pics. They could be mother/daughter in a movie someday?

I’ve been disappointed in Jennifer’s style this whole premiere tour. She is gorgeous, and she looked gorgeous last year too. I’m not sure what is up with this year… it’s ironic because she should be styled impeccably… like the book and movie!

Elizabeth Banks has killed it every time. Love love love this pink dress!

  20. Insertrandomname says:

would have been better without the lipstick. and i dont like her bangs… but i have a round face and bangs – didnt realise they look bad together :S

  21. Talie says:

Whatever, her body is smoking hot.

  22. layla says:

I just don’t get the hype about this girl.

    • Sara says:

I believe it an association with the books. People love The Hunger Games and associate her with the books. Except for this website, most blogs love Emma Watson and part of it is because she played Hermione. I’m not a big fan of this girl, simply because she comes off as sanctimonious. The whole thing about the girls who didn’t eat at lunch were dumb, referring to Kim Kardashian as “that Kardashian girl,” calling out other actors who complain…I can deal with obnoxious, like Rooney Mara, but I don’t like it when people put down other people or single them out in interviews/the press. Kim Kardashian is a waste of space but I don’t think it classy to actually articulate it, a la Jon Hamm and Jennifer Lawrence. I also find it kind of annoying that she is touted as a “natural beauty” when her face is photoshopped in most of the magazines and promos to give her eyelids.

  23. Rux says:

    She has a great butt.

  24. Mimi says:

I can’t STAND Josh Hutcherson as Peeta. His face just sorta looks, I don’t know…Kinda like it was carved out of cream cheese. Oh hell, even I think I sound like a bitch lol.

    • sassenach says:

So what if you sound bitchy, at least you are right. Look how puny he looks next to her. He looks GROSS.

  25. normades says:

This would be a great dress on someone like Kim K. It says older sex bomb. The length and fit do not work on Jennifer at all.

She should be wearing things that are flirty, young, fashion forward and fun. Fire the stylist asap!

  26. Marca says:

Wait, why was she wearing two gold dresses before? I don’t get the connection (to Hunger Games?)

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Katniss, the Girl on Fire…In the book, she would dress at the opening ceremonies as if she were on fire (sparkly/lit dresses)…I could keep going, but I will not lol.

      • Marca says:

Ah I see! Clearly I should have read the books before I commented haha thank you for explaining it to me 🙂

  27. Lila says:

I actually think this is the best of all three premiere looks…She looks really cute to me here. I have always been on the train of thought that she has a great body and hair but her face is kind of meh because of the roundness…Plus the lips, while well done, are obvious when you see photos of her from a few years ago…But she looks really pretty and like a young Renee Zellweger here.

  28. Pedge says:

LOL @ Elizabeth Banks’s dress. It looks like Hologram Barbie or something.

  29. I.want.shoes says:

I don’t dislike the dress but it looks like the dress is wearing her and not the other way around. Not loving the hair at all.

  30. El Kiddo says:

Can you picture La Blanchett in Banks’s dress? I can. She’s gonna work it like nobody else can.

  31. thinkaboutit says:

I’m pretty sure she did her own hair and make-up, and while this look is begging for a nice clean red manicure/pedicure, she is bare up and down. It’s all so undone, which on the one hand is kind of refreshing, but on the other hand, the whole look needs to be more casual if that’s how she wants to play it. Tom Ford isn’t casual.

  32. Reece says:

Think the dress is built for a more boyish figured woman. Her makeup bugs me more than the dress. It doesn’t match her skin. It’s white. She’s kinda gold/yellowish. I think the lipstick should have been darker by a shade.

BTW Hollywood THAT up there is a curvy woman. Boobs, smaller waist and hips. Hence The Curve. Not just big fake ones.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Um. Yes. Thank you. I’m sick of ppl like LeAnn Rimes and those Hwood bitch wives that weigh 105 and have DD boobs and are like, “yay. I embrace my curves.” No you don’t, you do not have curves. Ane the 250 lb celebs say the same thing.

THIS is what a healthy, curvy body really looks like, people. Soak it up.

  33. Peanut says:

    I’m loving Elizabeth’s dress.

  34. littlestar says:

OMG I LOVE that Tom Ford dress!!! It’s elegant, simple, and so damn SEXY! Why oh why oh why cannot I afford Tom Ford? Lol seriously. I want that dress so badly.

  35. Cathy says:

JLaw can’t pull off the bitch face like KStew does. She’s just to sweet looking, I don’t think they’re alike at all.

  36. Kim says:

Not glam enough?? She is young and should dress as such. I think she dresses to sophisticated for her age and for a kids movie premiere.

  37. AudreyS says:

I don’t think Jennifer chooses her own dresses. She probably has a stylist to do so… there’s too much hype and money about this movie to leave important decisions to a newbie.

  38. Nikki Girl says:

Am I the only person that thinks she looks gorgeous? I love the dress! And I don’t like the comparisons between her and K. Stewart- I think Jennifer Lawrence is so much more likable than her.

  39. Dee Cee says:

She’s the sporty no big frills type and happy..

  40. erin says:

Not a fan of Jennifer’s bangs, but it’s refreshing to see an actress all pumped up with ridiculous hair extensions

  41. Cait says:

Wow, that dress is worlds better than the other gold ones.

  42. cerulean says:

I love Elizabeth’s looks. Age appropriate, sexy, fashion forward and unusual. I like that she is working color and texture.

JL looks way out of her depth here. I loved her in Winter’s Bone and wanted more for her big red carpet but she is young. Her dresses look cheap on her though and I have no idea why.

  43. Alice says:

To me , it just seems like Jennifer Lawrence is exhausted. She looks really, really tired, which is understandable. She probably hasn’t had much sleep and she’s done three premieres back to back. She probably just wants to pass out on a bed.

  44. Loulou says:

She reminds me of a young Renee Zelwegger, at least facially.

  45. Shannon says:

These fashion critiques are hilarious, and exactly what the books are speaking out against 😛 It’s totally possible that she’s purposely avoiding the perfect glamourpuss look, considering that she chose the role because she liked the message Katniss and the movie send about our culture of reality TV and celebrity worship.

    • Ruth O says:

      Exactly!!

    • tori says:

you really see it as a political stance on her part- her bangs and clothes?

Nah. Those metallic dresses were totally going for glamour puss if you ask me.

Honestly, I think she’s just starting out in this whole fashion game, and probably hasn’t found the right stylist yet.

Her and Kristen Stewart are alike to me in that both aren’t exactly fashion plates naturally. But with fame comes more opportunities and choices styling wise. She’ll be polished by the next premiere with better access to good hair, makeup and dresses.

  46. CitizenErased says:

The guy playing Peeta doesn’t make me happy. He’s too bloody short and kinda looks like Joffrey from Game of Thrones, and that’s so not a good thing. But still, yay for the film, can’t wait.

  47. Ruth O says:

Its the work of bad stylists, not Jennifer.

  48. the original bellaluna says:

I think Jennifer is young, and trying to “find herself” as far as fashion and clothing are concerned. And I am LOVING the zipper-back of the dress!

Also, she could be trying to avoid the backlash that KStew has endured; being such a big part of a beloved book series turned into a movie series.

  49. Cleveland Girl says:

Does anyone think she looks like a young Renee Zellweger?

    • Michele says:

Yes, I always thought she looked a lot like a younger Renee Z. and many others seem to think so as well. I think she mentioned in an interview recently that Renee was one of her favorite actresses. They could play mother-daughter in a movie very convincingly.

  50. sonya says:

I love how people love to call Jennifer Lawrence plain.Plain and overrated. I mean who does she think she is, right?!
A tall, leggy actress with a great body, cute cheeks, pouty lips and nice eyes. How plain! And overrated! An oscar nominee, a critically acclaimed actress leading a critically acclaimed franchise, gosh she is awful!Sure she is plain and overrated.

  51. Zoey says:

I think she looks fantastic! @kaiser…get over your bang hatred, some people can rock them!

  52. Cleo says:

wow, I see a young Renee Zellweger.

  53. Isa says:

I LOVE Elizabeth Banks’s dress. I have boring taste and normally don’t like anything out of the ordinary but I love the dress. It fits the character and it’s just amazing.
Also, that’s how an optical illusion dress should be done! The sides are slightly darker, not in your face. It does wonders for her already amazing figure!

  54. oops says:

It’s really a cool and helpful piece of info. I am satisfied that you simply shared this useful information with us. Please stay us informed like this. Thanks for sharing.

  55. I do not even know how I stopped up right here, but I believed this post used to be good. I do not recognise who you are however certainly you’re going to a famous blogger when you aren’t already. Cheers!

  56. You’ve got a good weblog here! would you like to produce some invite posts on my site?

  57. Nip says:

She looks way uncomfortable with the dress and it is a huge improvment from the gold ones but there is a certain something she lacks and I don’t know what is it. I’m not saying the dress suits her but I ‘m also not saying that the dress is ugly. It’s just not her when she wears it. It looks to forced and ……. I don’t really know
