Jada Pinkett Smith: “We’re not getting a divorce. Where am I going to go?”

We heard rumors for months last year that Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith were on the verge of a split. The split stories started in August, 2011 and then picked up steam toward the end of the year. There were rumors that Jada may have gotten “close” to Marc Anthony on the set of her show HawthoRNe, that Jada and Marc’s “friendship” hastened the end of his marriage with J.Lo and that Jada and Will were living in separate homes. In December, Will was seen out partying with other women. By January, Jada was said to have visited celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser. So there wasn’t just one story that these two were having problems, there were a series of stories in different (mostly tabloid) sources that suggested it was true.

In April, Jada denied that there was any trouble with her marriage, and chalked the rumors up to their busy work schedules. Some subsequent photos with Will gave the impression that they were back together.

Now Jada is repeating that claim in a new interview with Essence (the same one where she said she doesn’t eat for pleasure.) She says she’s not getting a divorce:

It’s rumored that we’re getting a divorce. But no. We’re not getting a divorce. Where am I going to go? That’s my boo. It’s like he’s another part of me.” [Essence via ETOnline]

Is that nice or is that basically saying that she’s stuck with him and doesn’t know what else to do? “Where am I going to go” sounds like she can’t imagine life without him, but not like it’s a particularly romantic vision. Does that make sense? Whatever happened between them it sounds like they’ve worked it out and are moving forward. I’m rooting for them. Maybe they’ve finally learned to stop talking about their sex life with the press. We saw how that worked out for Heidi Klum and Seal.

Also, I have to say that Jada looks even more alien-like on the cover of Essence, but a lot of that is probably Photoshop.

Essence, February 2005:

These are photos of Jada yesterday on her Can-Am Spyder Roadster, a three-wheeled motorcycle basically. These things look cool, but even used ones are predictably expensive. Credit: FameFlynet

It really did seem like there was a lot going on with them, but maybe they’ve worked it out? Who knows. But the “where am I going to go” is kind of a weird response, vs. something like “I love him”.

  2. Lee says:

“Where am I going to go?” Not exactly a ringing endorsement of a marriage…

And, obviously there is a lack of imagination, since she has WAY more options than women who don’t have their money.

  3. Monie says:

Where are you going to go? How about “away”. Something so phony and try-hard about her. I guess when your most successful gigs have been a voice-over for a cartoon hippo/rhino (whateva) you gotta make the best outta your situation.

  4. RHONYC says:

    super-cute romper.

    that is all. 😉

  5. dahlianoir says:

I guess Xenu couldn’t afford another celebrity divorce.

  6. Boxy Lady says:

Maybe Photoshop, maybe ridiculous cheek implants

  7. diana says:

I love her. She is absolutely kick ass. And it is a testament to her confidence that she made that statement. Pls read it in context, people. She was saying it in a humorous and laid back way.
    Go, Jada.

  8. DANDILION says:

It’s not like she could stand to front another do what he wants man in her life.. and he’s not going to train another woman to passively look the other way..

  9. serena says:

Oh my god she’s totally different from the 2005 photo!

  10. hatsumomo says:

Good Lord, she needs to stop doing whatever she’s doing to her face, its starting to look weird. Take out those damn cheek implants and gain ten pounds. That 2005 face looked waaaaay more natural.

  11. Nev says:

her response seemed sweet. hope they are solid and make it too!!!!

    geez.

It does sound like a weird way of putting it, but I’ve described my marriage in similar terms before (though realizing it doesn’t really convey what I’m trying to get across). When I say, “Yeah, I’m stuck with him,” it’s not literal… more like, in any possible configuration of my future life, he’s there – a permanent fixture. I can’t imagine it any other way because I wouldn’t want it any other way. I get it – it doesn’t sound terribly romantic. But for me, seeing my husband as an automatic part of my life is like seeing my right arm as an automatic part of my life. I’m guessing she’s fumbling, like me, somewhere along those sentiments.

I think she would look better if she started eating for pleasure! happiness starts on the inside!

  14. Viv says:

Yeah, where is she going to go?
Marc Anthony likes them younger and Latina, and Xenu likes her better with more money aka Will Smith’s money.
So pretty and nowhere to go.

I realize this isn’t the takeaway point of the article, but I really think those backwards motorized tricycles look dopey beyond belief. Admittedly, I do not understand the cult of motorcycles and related vehicles, so maybe I’m missing something. They just look like adult sized Fisher Price toys and I can’t understand why people ride them.

  16. phoenix says:

I would ride one of those wheras I wouldn’t ride a two wheeler. It looks safer, who cares if it doesn’t look cool.

  17. Nanea says:

At a cursory glance, before reading who it was about, I thought the teaser pic was La Toya Jackson.

It seems that Jada has finally run out of over the top prose, after years and years of TMI, to gloss over the cracks (abyss even?) in their relationship.

  18. the original bellaluna says:

I hear what others are saying, about it being said in a laid back manner or saying “yeah, I’m stuck with him,” but it doesn’t strike me as being said in that way.

To me (and maybe I’m just projecting here), it seems kind of sad.

    • Agnes says:

agreed. the statement is not romantic, not in love-sounding, not trying to be funny, it just sounds… sad. like she’s resigned herself to whatever they have, not embraced it.

  19. Kim says:

Nice to see a couple who understand vows and commitment.Unlike most couple s who get divorced when things get tough.Unless there is abuse divorce should be banned

  20. lauren says:

Jada is being very practical..mmmm…where would she go indeed? Will is her filthy rich, powerful cheating Boo, and i doubt she would find anyone better. I loved Will in The Pursuit of Happiness–outstanding.
