Here’s some photos of everyone’s true love, Winona Ryder, on the New Orleans set of Homefront, and while it’s great to see her at work on a movie, that hair is giving me absolute fits because it looks so not very Winona-like. Those are some wild and wavy ombre extensions, which are all the rage for Hollywood starlets while playing characters who can be found at the margins of society with Jessica Alba, Rooney Mara, and Selena Gomez all recently taking the plunge by way of either extensions or wigs (and of course, Lea Michele and Jessica Biel do ombre just for the hell of it too). Winona usually keeps to her sleek, black hairstyles, so it’s kind of strange to see her like this, but it’s only for a movie, right?
In the film, Winona plays the tough, biker-girl sidekick of a methamphetamine drug lord portrayed by James Franco (naturally), who is mercifully not present in these photos because I don’t think I could handle his pretention at this very moment while taking in the shock of Winona’s wild new hair. Oddly enough, this is not the Ryder-Franco movie that we heard about a year ago, which means that now there are two of them. Winona had best be careful, or she’ll find James hiding in her trailer whilst taking photos of her butt and calling it AAART. Fortunately, Jason Statham was present on the set, so we do have a picture of him, and his hair never changes.
Winona was also smoking a lot on the set, but it’s unclear whether she was actually indulging for herself or for her crazy, ombre character. I’m guessing the correct answer here is “both.”

If you go back and see her films like Mermaids while a teen, she had bosoms. Large ones for her small size. No bolt-ons!

She was this tiny at some point in her early twenties but she definitely gained and lost weight in the last few years. Maybe she did it for this character? I think she would look younger with a few pounds more but hell, whatever makes her happy.
I just love her. Yesterday, today, tomorrow. I wanted to be her when I was growing up so badly and short of attacking someone Cracken-style, she could do very little wrong in my book.

I agree. There is something about her that is really disturbing and it is more than just this role that she is playing. I mean she is Jan-Michael-Vincent disturbing. I so loved her in Beetlejuice.

Someone should buy her a hairbrush and show her how to use it. Then someone else can take her to an adult hair stylist and get that mess cut and shaped without that silly color.

I respect her for trying something new, and she seems to have a good attitude about herself, aging, and her career: past, present, and future. Give the girl a break, she’s just living her life and trying to do the best she can.
I recently saw an interview she gave for Frankenweenie, and I agree that it’s pretty apparent that she has some form of mental illness, which is sad and difficult to watch, but it was also clear that she was trying hard to push through her usual anxiety and shyness, and I admire that she’s not letting it stop her.
And if indeed she does suffer from mental illness, I think she deserves our sympathy and compassion, not our ridicule.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing what she does with this character. I think it’s cool that she’s still challenging herself as an actress and is open to roles that people think are uncharacteristic of her.
That being said, I do hope that someday she’ll give us a classic Winona performance in a cute little indie comedy or something. It’d be good to see the sweet, innocent Winona at least once more

Honestly, it looks like she stuck it in a pencil sharpener while high. If it comes out that she has a deviated septum from too much coke and this nose job is a drug-related necessity rather than an aesthetic choice, I’ll honestly be relieved.
