Demi Lovato on her upcoming album: “I’m bringing the sound of real music back”

Demi Lovato

Here are some photos from Demi Lovato at the iHeartRadio festival last month, which we didn’t cover (other than Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus) because, well, you know. Still, this is Demi looking sort of fierce at the festival, and her bod and face look pretty great, but — and I’m not nearly as anti-bang as Kaiser — I think we can univerally declare that this is a very severe (and definition) case of “bangs trauma.” Or can we? These look some pretty awful bangs to me. Not Jessica Biel awful, mind you. But bad enough to call out. As for Demi herself, she just gave an interview to Us Weekly about her adventures (thus far) as an “X-Factor” judge, her upcoming album, and (of course) more about bullying. Here are some excerpts:

Demi Lovato

Life as a blonde: “It’s crazy! I never ever thought that I would go blond, but I’m having fun with it. As for the bangs, I just feel like myself again. It reminds me of being 15 again — when I was doing Camp Rock. I don’t know how long I’ll keep them, but for the meantime it just makes me feel like myself.”

On Simon Cowell: “I love messing with him. He’s really funny and I have a lot of fun working with him. But someone has to put him in his place. I mean — you can’t come to the United States from England and make fun of all of us! I have to stand up for my country.”

More on bullying: “I’ve talked a lot about my past experiences. Most of my issues stemmed from the trauma of being bullied when I was 12 years old. I’ve also known people who have taken their lives because of bullying. It’s something I never want to see happen again. So if I can put an end to it, I’m going to do anything I can to stop it.”

On nail-album promotion: “I don’t like nail art. I used to be obsessed — I’d have a cupcake on one finger and leopard on the other. These days I’m a pretty simple girl when it comes to nails. I either wear clear polish, black or dark red — that’s it.” So we won’t see her next album cover painted on her index finger? “I leave that to Katy Perry.”

On her upcoming 4th album: “I’m bringing the sound of real music back. I think Adele does a great job — they are catchy pop songs, but it’s real music and there are instruments. I want to bring a lot of that back. There’s going to be some fun, light-hearted songs with kind of a throwback sound. But I say one thing and then I spend like a month in the studio and it ends up being totally different, so I don’t know.”

On maintaining a healthy lifestyle: “I make time. I’m a really dedicated person. And I know that if I work really, really hard now, I can get to the place that I want to be in my career so that maybe in a couple years — or whenever I make it to that level — I can take a break. Travel the world. Spend a ton of time with my family. Maybe start a family. Years and years down the road.”

[From Us Weekly]

Give a girl one season hosting a musical competition show, and she knows everything there is to know about “real music,” right? I kid, really. While I am glad that Demi gets along well with both Simon Cowell and (according to a prior interview) Britney Spears on the set of “The X Factor,” but I’m concerned that Simon may have created a bit of monster here. Maybe Demi will prove us all wrong? We shall see…

I love that she opened up about all her issues with eating disorders and bullying, but that is the only thing that seems likeable about her.
I consistently dislike her style, her quotes, and her music.
I almost feel like she stays relevant because of her very public struggles and not for any other reason.

    • ssa says:

Same, I mean, good for her for being able to speak honestly about the shit she’s gone through and if it helps other young girls going through the same shit, even better. But, I cannot stand her and I don’t even know anyone who is a genuine fan of her.

  2. MarenGermany says:

    “…and there are instruments”
    like, really???
sorry, I needed a good laugh this morning.

    • Lola says:

Maybe she should first bring her natural hair color back. Blonde doesn’t work for her.

    • Amy625 says:

A lot of songs use synthesisers to replicate actual instruments so her statement isn’t ridiculous sounding. But I always roll my eyes when artists say they are going to bring back real music. Usually it ends up being the same music they made before or the same as every other artist.

  3. Shitler says:

I like Demi. She has loads more talent than Miley or Selena. I think that incident where she punched her backup dancer & eventual rehab have overshadowed her career. I’m rooting for her

    • Mourning the Death of Music says:

Saying she has “loads more talent than Miley and Selena” still doesn’t mean she has much of any talent.

      • Laura says:

So true. I am sorry, but I dislike her very much. Good on her for opening up about her issues, but now she’s made it a way to promote herself and act all holier-than-thou. She’s not particularly talented and the fact she’s talking about her upcoming album being ‘real music’ makes me want to barf.

      • jwoolman says:

If you mean her singing – yes, Demi has a real voice and doesn’t need digital help.
Miley has a good voice, but not anywhere near as powerful. But Miley definitely doesn’t cheat the audience when she’s on stage. She works hard and has great energy and stage presence.

Selena needs to stick with acting, she always needs digital enhancement, although she’s such a good actor that her music videos are fun to watch. The Mouse (and The Nick) is always pushing kid actors (who usually can’t really sing well enough) into singing in order to grab as much $$$ from the young and undiscriminating audience as he can while their tv shows are popular. It really isn’t fair to the kids, both on stage and in the audience.

But with regard to acting – both Miley and Selena blow Demi out of the water. They both became very good actors, especially Selena. Demi was always just adequate for a kid actor and didn’t show the growth in that area that I saw in Miley and Selena. Her singing was her real talent.

To be honest, though, Selena and Miley are quite likeable but Demi really isn’t. I strongly suspect she was more of a mean girl in school than she lets on. There’s just something that doesn’t ring true with her. I’m sure she has had real problems to work through in her life, but I’m not so sure they’re the ones she claims. The girl who slugged the backup dancer may be the real Demi…she just realized she needs to reel it in for her career’s sake. Which is good, and she’s young, so maybe she’ll change for real eventually.

  4. Joanna says:

beautiful girl. too bad she ruined her beautiful hair by going blonde. looked much better before.

  5. Gracie says:

Must resist urge to link video of Demi getting burned by X factor contestant.
Must resist urge to say screaming isn’t singing.
Must resist urge to point out how big of a bully she was, even randomly punched someone, yet pretends to be all “woe is me”.
Must resist urge to pull out horrendous blonde weave.

    • Huh says:

Don’t resist, Gracie! You write the truth. This shady professional victim of ‘bullying,’ body-snarking and meanies cannot string together a statement, ever, without asking for pity and falsely claiming common ground with people who actually were harassed at school (as opposed to doing the harassing.) I wish that I had my hands on that Reddit that called her out as one of the nastiest girls at Disney. Chick sucks and is a liar, liar, liar.

      • someone says:

if you find the link, would you please share? i have never quite believed her bullying stories (to their fullest extent) and had a feeling she was not exactly the nicest girl herself, but i felt like an awful person for thinking that. don’t get me wrong, she’s probably gone through horrible things, but i think there’s more to the story with this girl. i would like proof for my bitchiness 😛

      • Gracie says:

Damn, most people on CB are drinking her kool aid! They’re playing right into her “victim” and “talented” image. She was ok as a Disney star, but the bulk of those kids can’t sing themselves out of a paper bag. She can’t hold a candle to real artists.

      • Cathy says:

This might be the quote you’re referring to: [–][deleted] 52 points 11 months ago

Worst encounter with any of the “tween idols”?

Worst: Oh, man. Demi Lovato was an ass a few years ago. She still may be, for that matter. We had a weird encounter at an event (sorry to be so obtuse about this, but… privacy concerns!) wherein she referred to me as a fatass. I’ll give her that she was probably struggling with her ED at the time, but it was really pretty unnerving and d-ckish. It was also very obvious that she was on coke and maybe something else (MDMA? Not sure.).” And here is the link: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/mbdxm/iaaa_former_child_actor_who_ran_in_some_of_the/

        ~~I should be doing homework….~~

    • Erinn says:

Gracie I agree with you. A lot of people are buying into it. Sure, she talked about bullying and such, but the girl was also hiding a lot more. She was hiding that she had the depression/bipolar for a long time, was still hard partying when she was telling her fans ‘sober is sexy’ and she punched that girl because she was an unstable, entitled little brat.

I have no sympathy for the girl. She’s a hypocrite. And I can’t stand when people who bully others go on and on about how they were bullied.

  6. Jayna says:

I like Demi. She has a funny personality on the X Factor and has a lot to say even as a 20-year-old on there. She had on a brown wig last night with bangs and looked great, but I think she looks great with blonde hair. She has a really good voice and with the right album and songs could do well.

  7. Christine says:

I really think she had a nose job recently.

  8. I.want.shoes says:

LOL@ “I’m bringing real music back”. Not at all pretentious or delusional for someone with as little talent as Demi (don’t get me wrong, she was talented as a Disney kid on those kid shows but that’s where it stops).

    • jwoolman says:

You just haven’t heard her sing enough. Unless medication and too much money have caused recent problems with her voice, she really does have it in that department. I know what she means by real music -very limited digital enhancement, real instruments played by real musicians. Rare today, but she can do it. She was just a weak actor, The Mouse pushed her into acting because it would be a good way to get the kiddies attention for the music products, as The Mouse usually does in reverse (pushes good actors into singing despite weak voices).

It’s not uncommon for The Mouse to recruit someone for his stable who is already an experienced singer. Makes it easier to keep the money flowing from the kiddies than to try to get engineers to fix a popular actor’s singing voice. The Jonas Brothers, for instance, were not a Disney creation. They had been singing together professionally for many years, writing songs and playing ” real instruments” with “real voices”. The Mouse gave them some nice opportunities but The Mouse didn’t make them.

      • TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

What do you mean real instruments played by real musicians is rare today? Have you seen Esperanza Spalding, the Avett Brothers, Rodrigo and Gabriela? Do you mean rare in the silly pop world?

  9. some bitch says:

Shut the hell up, Demi, about your crappy music AND your faux coke-induced breakdown.

Could somebody lock this idiot up in a psychiatric facility for a year or five? Then she can go on about bipolar disorder.

  10. moon says:

SHE LOOKS BEAUTIFUL i really got nothing to complain about!:D

  11. Dani says:

That HAS to be a wig. I don’t see how it’s possible for her to bleach her hair and dye it random colors every other day and still have long hair like that. #weave

Also, I agree with Gracie and everyone above. She’s a huuuge hypocrite. You were bullied at 12 but you’re only self harming at 18? I’ve seen bullying and my little brother was maaajorly bullied. She’s an entitled over grown child, screams her way through a CD, and has the fashion sense of Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera.

  12. disneyho says:

Now that is a PRETENTIOUS statement. I didn’t know what the sound of music was, I guess I was just listening to noise

  13. Lisa says:

    And so modestly, too.

  14. midnightmoon says:

duet with justin timberlake up next. to keep it really real.

i think she CAN sing, but she should stop talking.

    that is all.

  15. KellyinSeattle says:

What, is she going to sing Beatles’ songs?

  16. claire says:

She’s bringing real music back, with…instruments. Wow. Go you Demi. NO ONE has ever thought of that!

    What a tool.

  17. TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

    Agree with just about everyone else;
    ANother delusional idiot;
    You are a creation of a multi-national entertainment corporation called Disney; Without that, and your professional team, you would be nothing;
    This nonsensical comment shows what kind of bubble these young celebutards live in;
If i want real music, I’ll listen to Jimi Hendrix at Berkeley or Zeps How The West Was Won – not Disney piffle.

  18. Stay-Cee says:

I really dont get it why people dislike her soo much , i look up to her because i was bullied had a ED & cutted for moat of middle school & high school . Its good to know that she knows what its like to libe in that shadow . I think i she is incredibly strong to share her true feeling to help other girls and guys like me to let them know that even celebrities have these problems and we can get help and get better .

i just don’t understand the hate.

  19. Ella says:

I’m pretty sure Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart said “I’m bringing the sound of real music back,” and the liner notes for Wagner’s ‘The Ring of the Nibelung’ said “there’s going to be some fun, light-hearted songs with kind of a throwback sound.”

    • ViktoryGin says:

      Love. It.

I would love her to give a lecture at Berklee College of Music or Juilliard about what actually constitutes “real music”. I’m sure scholars and researchers will find her absolutely riveting given that apparently “real music” has “instruments” and such. Don’t dare ask her which.

So sick of these marginally talented, skillless hacks.
