Jennifer Lawrence: Tabloids let me pick what co-star to ‘be with,’ she chose BCoop

Jennifer Lawrence Bradley Cooper

Jennifer Lawrence’s post-Oscar interviews are continuing to filter forth in the media. While probably nothing will top the Jack Nicholson reaction video, there’s still a lot of adorableness to be found out there. For one thing, someone showed Jennifer her Miss Dior ad campaign, which she hadn’t seen ahead of time. Her response was as follows: “Oh, my God, that doesn’t look like me at all. I love Photoshop more than anything in the world. Of course it’s Photoshop, people don’t look like that.” See? I told you she looked plastic in those ads, and Jlaw herself agrees.

Now onto the topic of this story, which is that everyone (including the media) wants to set Bradley Cooper up with someone. Poor Bradley himself seems very aware of this phenomenon and even goes out of his way to not walk next to female journalists who are interviewing him for fear that they’ll end up together on a tabloid cover. Of course, when Bradley and Jennifer first appeared in the trailer for Silver Linings Playbook, I predicted that it wouldn’t be long before they were linked in the gossip pages, and Bradley himself later found himself denying a romance because he “could literally be her father.” Never mind that “literally” actually means that Bradley would have had to have slept with JLaw’s mother to make that claim, but we know what he meant.

Jennifer also makes an interesting claim in an interview with Us Weekly about how her publicist warned her that a tabloid was about to publish a story about her getting involved with a co-star, and she got to choose whether she was “set up” with Bradley or Sam Claflin. She chose Bradley, of course! Because serial killer eyes make for better pretend romances, but JLaw’s really trying to set him up with her friends. Here’s the details:

Bradley Cooper Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper have undeniable onscreen chemistry, but the Silver Linings Playbook costars have no intention of dating in real life. Despite rumors to the contrary, both actors have repeatedly refuted reports that they’re an item.

Before Lawrence nabbed the Best Actress in a Leading Role at Sunday’s Academy Awards, the 22-year-old spoke to MTV about her alleged affection for Cooper. (The Oscar winner split with her X-Men: First Class costar Nicholas Hoult in January following a two-year courtship.)

“My publicist told me that a magazine was going to say I was having a thing with either [The Hunger Games: Catching Fire‘s] Sam Claflin or Bradley Cooper, and I got to choose. And I chose Bradley Cooper because I love Sam’s fiancee [actress Laura Haddock] so much,” Lawrence said. “Sam is so sweet. So sweet that he’s almost not hot anymore.”

Cooper, whose on-and-off romance with Zoe Saldana ended in December 2012, is even getting assistance from Lawrence in the dating department. “I feel like all I’ve been doing lately is setting him up,” the actress revealed. “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m gonna save time and just get you a booklet with pictures of my friends. You just go through and pick them out, because this is getting exhausting.'”

[From Us Weekly]

Isn’t that sweet how JLaw chose not to “be with” Sam in the tabloids because she likes his fiancee? The subtext there is that she doesn’t much care for Bradley’s on/off girl, Zoe Saldana. This week’s issue of Enquirer adds something to this issue with a claim that “protective” JLaw was resting her arm on Bradley at the Vanity Fair Oscar part and “glared at Cooper’s on-again/currently off-again girlfriend Zoe Saldana as she passed by.” That’s actually kind of hilarious, but I hope that whomever JLaw ends up setting Bradley up with is well aware of the fact that the dude hates deodorant. Gross.

Here’s some more photos from Jennifer Lawrence’s Hawaiian getaway. Yes, she’s there to do reshoots for Catching Fire, but I’m willing to bet that producers at least gave her a few days off so she could hang on her balcony and smoke some weed.

I love that she’s make-up free in these pictures. And her hair’s not “done” either. Now that’s what I call a vacation!

    • kpist says:

I agree. So many tabloids run stories of “stars makeup free” except they all have makeup on. It’s nice to know that there is someone who really does go makeup free, an Oscar winner no less.

  2. Downton fan says:

    Omg!!! LOVE that white dress!!!

    • Arock says:

Totally agree. A shift dress is so complimentary to her body shape. Shoes are great too.

  3. Lb says:

I love Jlaw and I like Bradley Cooper. I love, love their friendship. Sue me.

He just looks so genuinely proud of her when she wins and she seems to adore him as well. I like it. Maybe I’m just tired of stories of acrimony and jealousy and anger.

    • MsAubra says:

      Yes, it’s REALLY sweet!

    • Shira says:

Finally some kind words about Bradley… this article is about Jennifer’s interview – Bradley never said a word in it – and somehow they managed to write mean things about him alone.

  4. lucy2 says:

If that’s not telling of the state of tabloid “journalism”, then I don’t know what is – hey we’re going to write a story about you, want to pick who it’s also about?

    • Liv says:

So I got it right, they called her that they would make a story about either her and Claflin or Cooper? Can’t believe it. I mean they don’t even try to pretend that they write about facts!

    • flor says:

I know right? Why would she even allow that kind of stuff to happen is beyond me.

      • Michele says:

I know the tabloids make up stuff all the time about stars but I had no idea they actually call them first and let them decide who they prefer to be falsely attached to in their bogus hook up stories!

I wonder if they do that for all stars or just certain popular, high profile ones like Jennifer?

      • gogoGorilla says:

Eh, it’s all about the publicity. I’m sure they must all do it. I mean, I think they know they have to stay in the gossip rags to remain somewhat relevant.

I think the whole thing is really interesting, though. I had no idea that celebs get so much control over the stories about them. Interesting!

      • StaCat1 says:

well it’s going to happen..they are going to print something regardless…isn’t it polite of them to call and ask what lie about her she would like printed instead of choosing on their own? 😉

    • ??? says:

Yup. It takes two to tango. Celebs aren’t always the poor victims of tabloid journalism. In fact, nowadays they have plenty of sway over what’s written about them, and obviously over how and with whom they’re papped. They play the “game” from all sorts of different angles.

    • another nina says:

I guess tabloid called to publicist to ask her specific question as to whether Jen was closer to Coop or that other dude. Gals of course understood that their answer would translate into some trashy-hinty story and decided to be nice to the one with fiance. Quite an everyday story of writers and publicists, nothing out of the ordinary…

      • Michele says:

That’s true. If they hooked her up with a co-star who was already engaged to someone else, that would look really bad…and mostly on Jen’s part. That particular hook up would not sit well with most people and it could have possibly changed their once high opinions of her. Bradley was the safer choice to go with.

    • Lulu says:

Seriously, right?? Huh! Spoonfuls of salt will now have to be taken with every hook-up/breakup whatever story. I doubt my kidneys will survive.

  5. Ranunculus says:

I probably was asleep during SLP, because I completely missed the chemistry between her an Bradley Cooper.
Sorry, she gave a one-note performance and just adds her name to the list of females whose nominations and wins for the Oscar is a joke. She is good at spinning her own media machine though, I give her that.

    • flor says:

      That was Harvey’s fault too.

Seriously, she is a good actress but is too soon for an Oscar for her. She still needs to grow as an actress and find prove herself.

      • Ranunculus says:

I agree with you on the Harvey factor and on her being too immature for that role. I just didn’t get her. Cooper was surprisingly believable though.

      • Em says:

I thought she was the stand out in silver linings playbook. I was really bowled over by her. Bradley was ok, but i could have seen better actors bring more depth to that part.

    • Liv says:

I don’t think she’s too young considering her talent. She was excellent in Winter’s Bone. Plus everybody knows that many actors get their Oscar after a previous Oscar-worthy performance…

She might be too young to get an Oscar regarding her sanity though. Hope she gets through the hype sanely.

      • Tessa says:

There was no clear frontrunner this year, so they gave it to Jen for Winter’s Bone and SLP. She was very worthy of an Oscar for Winter’s Bone. I believe that year, unfortunately, so was Natalie Portman.

      • Ranunculus says:

Jacki Weavers character in that movie was a passive character, but she was more alive on screen and added more persona to her role than Jennifer Lawrence, who was the lead.

    • Happymom says:

I saw it yesterday-and while I thought she was fine in the movie-she certainly did not deserve the Oscar. If any one should have gotten it-it was him! He was great in that movie-and the fact that she’s getting so much acclaim is kind of astounding.

      • Tessa says:

I agree. In a year when DDL isn’t playing Lincoln, Bradley probably could have won. He was so good.

      • Shira says:

Agreed. I didn’t leave the theater thinking ‘wow, she dominated this movie’, I just couldn’t stop thinking about Bradley’s role. And yet she was nominated in more than 2 times the awards he was and won all the big awards when he got none (CCA isn’t big, is it?).
I am happy for her Oscar win and since I haven’t seen the rest of the movies from that category I can’t say that she didn’t deserve it the most, but out of that movie? No, she didn’t deserve it the most.

      • Michele says:

I agree, Bradley was top notch in SLP. It would be interesting to see who would have won the Best Actor Oscar if DDL wasn’t in the mix. I bet Harvey would have upped his campaign to get Bradley that Oscar win as he did for Jennifer. It was a given that DDL was always going to get the Oscar so Harvey then focused his attention on Jennifer. And the rest is Hollywood history.

      • andy says:

Most critics agreed that DDL would win but Phoenix should have won. Cooper’s nomination was his prize. Denis Lavant(Holy Motors) and John Hawkes(The Sessions) deserved nominations more than Jackman or Cooper.

        jmo

      • Em says:

Bradley never would have won. If DDL hadnt been there, Phoniex or Jackman would have won. Phoneix gave a far superior performance to bradley and jackman is owed. I think for bradley just being nominated was a huge step up and that he was happy with that.

      • Ranunculus says:

@Andy Agree with you on Denis Lavant, he was so brilliant in Holy Motors. Given the fact that Cooper is just starting his career as a serious actor, his nomination is quite big for him, but yes his performance was little compared to what Joaquin or Denis or Philip Seymour Hoffman did. Haven’t seen Sessions yet so I cant really say, but it’s on my list. J Lawrence is OK but IMHO she is far way from what a skilled actress is, I also didn’t get her in Winters Bone honestly. Harvey is just good at playing the Oscar and media game and she is OK at playing along.

    • FassDaActor says:

That’s the truth thanks to Harvey Hollywood mafia. she’s still a sweet girl and I don’t faut her for the win. I like her even more now that she outed the tabloids.

    • Lulu says:

@Ranunculus: Have you seen Winter’s Bone? Ithink she has excellent potential if she is willing to put in the work.

Sorry about the bad spacing. My phone freaks out when I post from the train.

  6. Lolly says:

I assume her friend’s would be in the same age bracket as her so…?

    • Shira says:

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. If age really is such a great issue for Bradley, he wouldn’t be dating her friends. Not to mention, that if something happens it could mess up their friendship.

      • MisJes says:

No, her friends are not necessarily the same age. Just recently Jennifer set him up with one of her friends, a model named Laura, and she was 28.

      • Shira says:

@MisJes: no, that Laura was the one who supposedly started the rumor Bradley has a foot fetish. Bradley said the extent of his connection with her was a few rounds of Draw Something. Also, a 10 years gap is pretty big, again – if age really is such an issue.

  7. I can’t help it, I totally ship them! They have amazing chemistry and seem to genuinely like each other a lot. But the age difference is quite big, so maybe someday in the future when she’s more mature… At least I’ll be hoping for it 🙂

    • Shira says:

      I think she’s damn mature for a 22-year-old.
I don’t think age should be an issue if you have a connection which these 2 clearly do – they genuinely are close in real life, and as proof, they signed on for 3 joint movies in 18 months which is pretty crazy.

    • princesslh55 says:

Jennifer looks mature for 22 and actually very good next to Bradley.
there are tones of coupons in Hollywood with bigger age gap than 16 years. like GEORGE CLOONEY & STACY KEIBLER – 18 yrs, AMBER TAMBLYN & DAVID CROSS – 19 yrs, JENNIFER LOPEZ & CASPER SMART – 18 yrs, ALEC BALDWIN & wife – 26 yrs, plus lots more so this should not be such a big deal.
both JL and BC are adults. if they are dating then good for them. let them be.

  8. bea says:

I guess the paps got a room directly across from her? When they got pics of Rianna in her room I just assumed she wanted it, but maybe not. This seem really intrusive to me.

  9. Feebee says:

It’s funny that Jennifer’s come out with that. It’s so ridiculous it can only be laughed at.

I think Cooper was referring to his age when he said literally. Technically not totally “literally” if you want to go with the mother thing but correct if he could, at 38, be a father of a 22 year old.

    • Tessa says:

Yeah, he’s using it as an intenifying adverb in this case. He used it correctly to state his point that he’s a lot older than she is, so much so that he could literally be her father. Emphasis, intensification, on age, not access to her mother.

  10. Annette says:

Am I the only person on earth who totally doesn’t get this chick’s appeal? (Her personality I mean, she’s obviously talented as an actress and very pretty/nice bod etc). Her smart alec-ey slightly crass persona grates my nerves every bit as fast as Hathaway’s faux humility. I find this sarcastic sense of humor, witty though it may be usually springs from insecurity. She sure seemed to get defensive very fast when asked about eating dirt at the Oscars and whether she thought she’d perhaps already peaked by 22. So much for someone who doesn’t give a damn what others think, which is supposedly what she’s so admired for.

    • Tessa says:

She’s a bit crass for me, but I like her. I was raised to be a lady, so flipping people off and talking about pee all the time, and cussing in public isn’t something I really rally around, but she could be worse. I like Emma Watson’s public demeanor, recoil at Kristen Stewart. Jen falls somewhere in the middle.

    • CC says:

I’m certain you’re not the only one but personally I like her well enough.

And since i can’t be bothered to think about her future career, which is on her hands for the most part, and the good/bad choices she makes both in career moves and her personal life (helloooo Lindsay Lohan). If she makes stuff people like, she’ll continue to get people’s support.

    • ??? says:

I give Lawrence a pass to some extent because she’s still quite young and hasn’t been immersed in Hollywood long enough to be more media savvy, hence the inconsistencies in her way of handling media attention. She doesn’t seem as manufactured as a lot of other young actresses in her age bracket, and that’s probably what a lot of people find appealing about her.

Her rapid rise to fame is so typical of the Hollywood system/formula, though. While I don’t think she’s as amazeballs as practically everyone else does, I do think she has just enough talent and overall appeal to be marketed that way. But with the rate at which Hollywood churns ’em out nowadays, young actors and actresses are arguably at even more risk — especially when they are elevated so quickly — to be burned very early on in their careers. Show business is a truly fickle business, Hollywood is a nastier place than many probably realize, and overexposure is a real threat. People are excited about Jennifer now; she’s having her time. But she’s still got a ways to go.

      • Annette says:

+1. I think I’d like her better if she got some more coaching in how to handle the press.

For example, she always tries to avoid stupid or awkward questions by kind of teasing the reporter/interviewer, giving them stink eye and mocking the question, which *can* admittedly be very funny, if done by someone who knows what they are doing, but Jen seems out of her depth and defensive, so her humor falls flat for me. It may be just because she’s inexperienced as you say.

    • NYCGAL says:

Annette-agree with you 100%. Jennifer’s personality kind of is annoying. I think if I worked with her at a normal job every day it would get old fast.

  11. MsAubra says:

    This is hilarious!

  12. Shira says:

    Sorry, I still call denial.
You know what happened before she said she chose Bradley? She was asked who she likes more – Josh or Sam. Again, JOSH or SAM. Bradley’s name wasn’t even mentioned, and all of a sudden she starts talking about how it was HER choice that the media would start spreading rumors about them dating. Please.
Also, at another interview that night, she was asked if the guys are hitting on her in all those awards season parties and she said “no, because I’m always with Bradley.”
I’m not necessarily saying these two are together but they should stop calling each other big brother/little sister if they keep touching each other ALL THE TIME.
Also, Serena will come out in 7 months and they have some steamy scenes there… don’t freak out your audience with these remarks.

    • CC says:

I don’t know, I don’t really follow her gossip, I hope she doesn’t date either Bradley Cooper or any of the guys from the Hunger Games franchise, especially either Josh or Liam. No triangle crap, TYVM.

    • Nina says:

Bradley Cooper strikes me as gay. I think they are just really just friends. I think there are very few straight men in Hollywood. If he were straight, he wouldn’t think he was too old for her. She is the perfect age for his midlife crisis.

    • lll says:

I don’t for one second, think they’re dating. It’s been a couple of months since their respective breakups. They would have been spotted somewhere by now….and I’m not talking about movie promotions/events.

      • Shira says:

I disagree with that… these 2 are extremely private, how often did you see them with their verified relationships in the past?
Like I said, I’m not necessarily saying they’re a couple – although I think there’s definitely a chance it’ll happen – but if they are, let me just say, signing up to do movies together over and over is a brilliant move: you get to spend so much time together without it seeming suspicious.

      • lll says:

        @Shira

You can still be private and still spotted.
Case in point. Zoe & Bradley were spotted having dinner together/with family last June. Way before the tabloids confirmed/knew they were back together.

  13. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

It would be funny if they actually ended up together later on…like ‘When Harry Met Sally’.. great friends for years then realize they MUST be the one for each other. Guess I’m just a romantic-at-heart and actually liked them together in SLP. They are cute w one another and he seems protective of her which is really nice.

  14. anonymous fan says:

I actually thought she was way too young to play Tiffany and a 38 year old man’s love interest.Th whole time I kept thinking that I wish Michelle Williams or Rachel Weitz,or Naomi Watts had gotten the role. But that is how Hollywood is…sigh. In 5 years JLaw will be too old to play a 40 yr old actor’s girlfriend.

  15. Original A says:

At the Critics Choice Awards, they were VERY touchy feely and she gushed more than usual over him. I usually roll my eyes at people who
put a lot of stock into body language, but even
I read the situation as them being into one another. That’s when the “dating” rumors picked up some steam. Since then, it seems like they make an effort to tone it down
in public…So who knows? I do think he’s too old for her though; she’s barely an adult and he could be her dad.

    • StaCat1 says:

I think Jennifer is very physical person. She seems touchy feely with alot of people. Lots of hugging and patting…but I don’t think it’s romantic. She hugs David ORussell and Harvey Weinstein alot as well..but they are not connected.
They are two attractive single co-stars so the tabs love to linkn them up.

  16. WendyNerd says:

I don’t think there’s a subtext of her “not caring for his on/off girl Zoe Saldana”, I think it’s just that Zoe Saldana is on/off, as you mentioned. It’s not as serious as an engagement.

  17. Sam H x says:

Bradley & JLaw clearly both get on with each other really well and he is really protective of her as they have grown closer working together. Theres no denying that. Their friendship is pretty cute and sweet. Also, they looked pretty cosy at the Golden Globes as well. I saw a clip of when she won the Oscar, Brad looked genuinely happy for JLaw and so did the rest of the SLP cast. I definitely agree with you ladies Bradley really impressed me with his performance in SLP and JLaw did well too however it wasnt enough for an oscar win imo. Brad was up against some strong contenders in his category and probably knew it wasn’t gonna happen for him. I hope this is a start of good things for him. As for these two being together I guess we will have to watch this space.

    • StaCat1 says:

They are going to be in Serena together this year. Jennifer jokes that they plan to work together alot so they can accumulate a “box set” (DVD collection).
      Cute.

  18. Mira says:

I like Lawrence’s spunky attitude but jeez, the Academy awards are one big joke. I saw SLP two days ago. For me the movie is nothing more than a rom-com, just a better one at that. That’s all. B.Coop is the only interesting part of the movie. To nominate it for Best Picture and deny The Master for Best Picture is reflective of how worthless the Academy awards are. Not to mention Lawrence did not deserve the Best Actor Female award. She was good but that’s all there’s to it. It wasn’t a performance-oriented role. She also looked so much younger to be cast opposite B.Coop. I could not take their pairing seriously in the movie. I don’t understand what is it they saw in Lawrence that they weren’t able to see in older actresses, that too for a role that any good actress could have performed!

I mean, first of all hollywood hardly writes performance-oriented roles for women. Each year the Best Actor Female category is filled with mediocre nominations. And then to go on and award the least worthy performance as the best is even worse. These awards lack credibility.

    • ??? says:

Grrrlll, the Academy Awards have lacked credibility for quite a while now.

      It’s a popularity contest.

  19. princesslh55 says:

i wonder who she is talking to on the phone….mmmmm

  20. KellyinSeattle says:

Personally, I think she’s way over-rated. I like Bradley Cooper in real-life with his wife; they seem to be a lovely couple.

  21. MsAubra says:

Hmmmm…she allegedly glared at Zoe during the VF Oscar party? Which is interesting wether true or not, because on twitter during the Oscars, a few tweeted Zoe mean mugging at him. Not sure how they knew WHO she was mean mugging at, but it’s definitley believable that she was throwing an ugg face, cuz it’s what she does best when she’s caught in photos and not engaging a person!

    • lll says:

That’s not her man, why would she be “glaring” at his ex? lol
      That’s a bit much.

  22. mainstream says:

The media’s compulsion to romantically link every woman and man who are seen together is pretty childish when you think about it. We are aware that men and women can be friends right?

  23. Emma says:

God I want that silky black trenchcoat dress. Amazing.

  24. lrm says:

well, it’s strange when people have said ‘she’s still young, she’ll grow into her talent more’…And, I just don’t undersatnd why, then, she deserved an oscar now…especially when ‘The Academy’ supposedly regularly holds out on actors b/c, ‘they are not ready yet’.
It’s weird how they will at times give a young star an award…even over Naomi Watts, who has produced an acclaimed and consistently solid body of work for so many years. To say nothing of Chastain, who is arguably in a different acting league than lawrence.

    Oscars are just entertainment.

  25. Jordan says:

Yes, that trench coat dress is lovely…damn, Lawrence and Cooper do make a cute non couple couple!.

  26. Juicy Lucy says:

I think Brad and Jennifer and just two touchy feely people who are nothing more than close friends, just like he is with Scarlett. Brad is into himself and his image and dating a younger woman would make him appear like a sugar daddy. Most of the women Brad has dated have been closer to his age or a bit older.
While I like Jennifer, the only reason she won was because Harvey bribed and bullied to get her into the lead actress catagory. Had she been in the supporting actress catagory, Harvey knew she would lose to Ann Hathaway. Jennifer’s work in Winter’s Bone was much stronger than SLP. The role of Tiffany could have been played by actresses such as Kate Winslet or Reese Witherspoon in their sleep. I failed to see any chemistry between she and Bradley in the film.
