Alison Pill & Jay Baruchel have called off their Canadian hipster engagement

Before everyone screams “WHO?” at me, I’ll explain. Alison Pill is best known as the sometimes ginger, sometimes blonde character actress currently starring in The Newsroom, but I know her best from her work in Milk and Midnight in Paris (she played Zelda Fitzgerald). You can see her IMDB here. You may now Jay Baruchel from Tropic Thunder or any of the millions of character roles he’s done. Anyway, Jay and Alison were together. They were engaged. They got a lot of attention last year when Alison “accidentally” tweeted a topless photo of herself to Jay and it ended up going out to all of her Twitter followers. And now Jay and Alison are done!

The wedding is off for good. After a two-year engagement, Alison Pill and Jay Baruchel have broken up. The Canadian stars have called off their engagement and gone their separate ways, Us Weekly confirms.

The This Is the End actor hinted about their split on Twitter Feb. 16. “Alone again, naturally. Heartbroken,” he wrote in a message that he later deleted. “I won’t be on twitter for awhile gang. Getting dumped rules.”

Baruchel, 30, and Pill, 27, became engaged in December 2010 after meeting on the set of hockey flick Goon. The twosome had plans to wed in September 2012 in Quebec.

“We’re getting married at an ice wine vineyard. Me and the groomsmen will all be wearing kilts!” the Tropic Thunder actor told Us in February 2012. “We’ll be welcomed in by uilleann pipers. It will be a very small, 70 person wedding, just friends and family.”

But in an interview with Victoria’s Times Colonist last month, Baruchel explained why the wedding never happened. “Unfortunately, we’re two busy people who are intrinsically lazy,” he said. “So in our free time, the last thing we want to do is book flights and organize hotel rooms for people.” He added, “But it’ll happen at some point.”

Or not at all, as it turns out. On Sunday, March 3, a solo Pill attended the 30th annual PaleyFest for The Newsroom at Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. Smiling on the carpet, the HBO actress was missing one conspicuous accessory for her photo op: her engagement ring.

Why did the pair decide to split for good? A source tells Us that their long distance relationship became too difficult to manage.

“Working and living in Canada is something that [Baruchel] is very passionate about. He wanted her up there more often, but she really likes Newsroom and the opportunities that are there for her,” the insider explains. “They were doing the long distance [thing] a lot.”

Baruchel’s rep did not respond for comment.

And when asked about the wedding over the weekend, Alison told ET Canada, “There will be none.” So Jay is tweeting about getting dumped and Alison is acting all “Whatever, I’ll be the harsh one.” Which makes me wonder if there’s some other backstory here. Hm.

She must have gotten tired of his voice.

    • Pseudoangie says:

Yes, it’s not just me! His voice irks me to no end. I could barely watch How to Train your Dragon

  2. wynona says:

    Gah!! Teeth!!!

    • BreeinSEA says:

Ha! First thought of mine! Im not a white teeth nazi but yikes… dont wear white with blonde hair if your teeth match your hair… just odd.

    • Annie says:

I don’t understand young women with yellow teeth. You just don’t have that if you brush daily, which means she doesn’t. Yuck.

      • Erinn says:

I brush 2-3 times a day, and don’t drink coffee or wine, and don’t smoke.

Unfortunately, my teeth just aren’t all that white. That being said, they’re not as bad as hers are in that awful photo.

      • Elizabeth says:

That just isn’t so. People have different coloured teeth. Not everyone has the ridiculous Hollywood bleach colour!

      • GoodCapon says:

Don’t we all have natural yellow teeth? And those who have white teeth either had their teeth bleached or had veneers?

      • judyjudy says:

There’s a wide range in color of natural teeth. My teeth are very white despite my coffee/wine habit and previous smoking habit. My skin, on the other hand…not so sparkly.

      • Melissa says:

I remember being so mad when I was a kid and compared teeth with my friend. I brushed twice daily and she was much more lax, but she had whiter teeth than me. Since we were kids, there was obviously no wine/coffee/etc. impacting the color. You win some, you lose some, I guess.

      • Samantha says:

Yep, genetics play a large part, and there are about a million other factors. I take meticulous care of my teeth, but they are not Hollywood white and I don’t care to damage the enamel with bleaches.

  3. Kate says:

She is, hands down, the worst thing about The Newsroom. And there are very many bad things about The Newsroom.

    • GoodCapon says:

I watch The Newsroom because I’m mainly interested with how they “make” the news. Unfortunately I’m politically apathetic, and The Newsroom is almost about 100% politics so much of the nuances are lost on me.

I’d still tune in for Season 2 though. I hope the people would hook up with whoever they should end up with (Sloan and Dan; Jim and Maggie) because the romantic storylines just drags the plot a bit.

    • kibbles says:

I watch the Newsroom and enjoy it. Alison Pill’s character is a nervous wreck and can be really annoying. I also see the character as a caricature of the stereotypical hipster 20-something working in NYC as a journalist. I actually like Olivia Munn’s character more on the show.

      • Kate says:

I agree, Olivia Munn and her character are the best part of the show. Who would’ve ever thought? Still, I can’t with this show, so I won’t watch season 2. It is a shame, really, because it has so much potential. The writing and acting are just dreadful.

  4. GoodCapon says:

Before The Newsroom I know her as Empress Maud from TPOTE.

How does one “accidentally” tweet a topless photo anyway? You login, choose a photo, then press Upload (I don’t use Twitter so I’m just assuming)? Any time she could’ve known what she was doing. That was a very bizarre incident. But she did own up to it, saying something along the lines of “I’m stupid”

    • andrea says:

She probably meant to send it via Direct Message instead of Reply or something. I use Tweetdeck and it’s happened to me more than once. And yes, I’m aware that makes me stupid too, LOL. Oh, and they weren’t nudies.

I’ve liked Jay since Almost Famous. Half the time, he does looks either goofy or grumpy but I just attribute that to his hipsterness. They seemed to really be into one another and were, at least to me, quite well-suited for each other. Too bad.

    • Rachel says:

Good call. Love TPOTE so much more than WWE, which was just waaaay too much backstabbing for me.

I don’t have HBO, so the first thing I thought of when I saw her was LLs best friend in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.

      • GoodCapon says:

        Was WWE any good though?

I tried reading TPOTE after watching the series and Follett was too verbose for my taste. If WWE is the same then I might just skip the book and plunge straight into the series.

      • Rachel says:

It’s a LOT of history and intrigue to fit into one book. Hence the verbosity. But I’m a history lover, so I don’t mind getting caught up like that. I liked TPOTE better because it was less As the World Turns set in feudal England. WWE was much more bloodthirsty, conniving and manipulative. To the point where I’m just yelling “KILL HIM ALREADY!!!” The actors were superb, but it was just over the top for me.

  5. Annie says:

I hate couples pictures where the girl is all smiley and happy, while the guy couldn’t look more over it. It’s like, wake up, girl! Not a hint of a smile even in his eyes. He’s so bored and done.

Move on girl. He looks diseased.

    • Lee says:

I remember seeing them on Stromolopolous shortly after they got engaged and they had the exact opposite chemistry than what you’re describing from that photo. It seemed to me like Jay was really into the relationship but Alison seemed mildly embarrassed by him on occasion.

He also stressed his commitment to living and working in Canada and Alison’s response was sort of ‘I like the opportunities in the US’. Jay almost seemed upset at that since his point was that we can only create opportunities in Canada if more talented people stay here and put the work in to build the industry. They were cute together, but after seeing the interview, I’m not surprised the wedding didn’t happen.

I really like Jay and have since Undeclared (or even back to Popular Mechanics for Kids). Alison seems talented but bland.

  6. MrsB says:

She needs a good teeth whitening treatment. Yikes.

  7. normades says:

I think she’s adorable and liked them together…oh well.

  8. Reece says:

I call him Hiccup because I love that movie.
She looks like the adult version of the Childlike Empress in The NeverEnding Story.

  9. Samigirl says:

I really like him. Maybe bc I have a habit for rooting for the underdog. Sad for him. Her, I’m meh about.

  10. loganski says:

Good for her. He’s a dick.

  11. DIds says:

I Looooooooooooooooooove him! That picture you posted doesn’t make him justice at all. I’m from Montreal, and I really like the fact that he still wants to work here, even if he got successfull in Hollywood. He’s adorable!

  12. goodquestion says:

She was pretty good on “In Treatment”.

  13. judyjudy says:

I’m not familiar with either one but I think she’s kind of adorable.

  14. Deedee says:

Am only here to say 3 things:
    1) “Victoria’s Times Colonist” is my local newspaper, and I am excited to see it on Celebitchy.
    2) Goon is a rad movie
    3) Woooo Canada!

  15. Bijlee says:

She was the eldest daughter on dan in real life! Ugh those girls were awful spoiled brats. But it was a good movie nonetheless. She should be Ellen pages girlfriend. They’re both Canadian and maybe she could learn from Ellen’s clean way of living.

  16. DeltaJuliet says:

From wearing her hair back to wearing it down she looks like an entirely different person!

  17. Melissa says:

I didn’t know that either of them were hipsters. I always took her to be an acting dork and him to be just a regular plain old dork.

    I’m surprised she’s only 27 – I feel like she’s been around for ages!

Maybe he can get together with Rachel McAdams, since they both want to live in Cananda?

  18. I Choose Me says:

Alison Pills best role that I’ve seen to date is as the redhead in SPvsTW. “We are the sexba-bombs!”

Her character in Newsroom annoys the piss out of me. Olivia Munn on the other hand is a gem in that show. Who’da thunk?

  19. Lolly says:

    Enty implied she was cheating.
I feel horrible for saying this..but their kids wouldn’t have been cute.

  20. cupcake says:

They both look like they are in their early 20s, Neither of them are terribly attractive either, just sayin 🙂

  21. Jackie says:

Not surprised. He looked way more into her then she was into him. I’ve also heard that she’s a bitch in person, very rude to people, stuck up and acts as though she’s better then you.

  22. d says:

He deserves better. I really think this guy is going to go a long way and have a long successful career. I was listening to him on Canada Reads and thought he spoke wonderfully. Don’t worry buddy, find yourself a crackerjack Canadian gal and get some loving!

  23. Jellybean says:

I heard an interview with the two of them on cbc radio back when they were doing promo for Jay’s movie Goon (which was hilarious)….. It was obvious back then that he was head over heels for her- but she just seemed to be with him for her car rear…
